One of the most profound conversations I heard was once when I was driving somewhere, hopefully to the temple, and I was listening to one of Prabhupada's conversations. It stuck in my mind so much that I thought I'd pass it on to you, and it goes like this: It was in Honolulu, 1976. Devotee: "So if we have to wake again, then there's no reason, why should we have to stop birth and death?" Prabhupada had been describing that dying is like going to sleep for some time. So the devotee was playing devil's advocate. Prabhupada: "So, you have no experience. Do you sleep perpetually, whole day and night? Why do you wake up? Is it not your experience that you sleep at night and wake up at daytime?" Devotee: "Yes, but if I'm going to wake up again, then why should I want to stop it? I go to sleep, I wake up." Prabhupada: "No, but you're waking up like a dog. That is the privilege. You sleep perpetually, not perpetually, for seven months, and then you wake up as a dog. The body is changed, and you go on barking—that you do not know. That is ignorance." Devotee: "Krishna, that's amazing. You go to sleep in a human body, and you wake up in a dog's body." Prabhupada: "Ah, that's it." Devotee: "When I wake up the next morning, I'm not afraid to go to sleep because I know that I will wake up. So if I'm going to die, and I know..." Prabhupada: "Die means you sleep as a man and wake up as a dog—that is dying." The part that stuck in my mind was when the devotee exclaimed after Prabhupada said that. He said, "Oh, you go to sleep as a man and wake up as a dog." It reminded me of a story I read in my childhood about a man who wakes up as a cockroach. It quite alarmed me, actually—was it a cockroach, or maybe it was a centipede? Somebody can check on that, but he was trying to figure out all his legs and arms—a famous author. There's a stark reality to death, and that is, it's not a joking matter or something to be taken lightly. When you do go to sleep or you die, you transfer to another body, and at that point, it's out of your hands. A devotee who had been arrested for trespassing and solicitation (a pretty common offense amongst devotees) he recalled being put in the back of the paddy wagon after having been handcuffed. There's this sense, once your hands are behind your back, and you're being pushed into a paddy wagon—where am I going? Don't worry about it. You're just going, and there's nothing you can do about it at that point. He recalled to me the feeling of helplessness that he had at that point. It's like, now it's out of my hands. Previously, I could have done something about it, but now it's out of my hands. So although death isn't final in any way because we're eternal, still there's a finality to the destination that we're going next. The only time that we can do something about it is before we go into the death throes. Even then, it's a little late because whatever we've cultivated throughout our lifetime will generally manifest quite strongly in the last days. It's hard to turn it around, so to speak. That is our habits, our way of thinking, and what we're attracted to at the last moment. Just as Prabhupada this morning brought up about taking a test, when you go in, you don't do it two minutes before they tell you to put everything away and pick up a number two pencil. You do it weeks before, months before. Hopefully, you're on track when you walk in. It's like a final exam, and Prabhupada brought our attention to this again and again, talking about how serious it is or how seriously we should take it because that's the final exam. After spending the year learning some of the limits of regenerative wine, and reporting those in the Death in the Vineyard mini-series, I wanted to spend some time exploring what regenerative wine could be. This is a stand-alone episode, but it also functions as an epilogue to the Death In The Vineyard series.  The most important lesson I learned this year is that it is impossible to grow or make wine “regeneratively,” or even to grow organically or biodynamically in a meaningful way, or to make “natural” wine in any way that isn't green-washing, unless you start with an ecological foundation. But what does that mean? What does an ecological approach to winegrowing and wine making look like? This episode looks at two brilliant and unique approaches to growing and making an ecological wine business. It is meant to excite and tempt and titillate you about how we could have a very different experience with wine. This episode is an invitation. My guest for this episode is Sharon Hewitt Rawlette. Sharon is a philosopher who writes for both popular and scholarly audiences on the topics of consciousness, anomalous experience, ethics, and spirituality. She has a PhD in philosophy from New York University and taught at Brandeis University before launching her career as an independent writer and researcher. She is also the founder and director of the Mind & Meaning Institute, which brings together world-class researchers to explore new philosophical and empirical approaches to the deepest questions raised by human experience. Soon after leaving academia for a career as an independent writer and researcher, Sharon became interested in the phenomenon of “coincidence” or “synchronicity”: strange, enigmatic experiences that aren't blatantly paranormal but that seem so improbably meaningful that they make us wonder whether something more than chance lies behind them. Her May 2019 book, The Source and Significance of Coincidences, presents a wealth of evidence concerning the statistical importance of coincidences, their range of possible causes, and how we can best interpret their implications for our lives. In November 2021, Sharon was named a runner-up in the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest for her essay “Beyond Death.” This essay summarises and analyses the best evidence for life after death collected over the last 150 years. I begin the interview by talking about what first interested her in anomalous and strange experiences and how that developed as a student, into academia, and becoming an independent researcher. We then discuss her work on coincidences, before focusing on her essay Beyond Death, exploring some of the Third Person and First Person evidence that she collected for that and how scientific research might progress when it comes to investigating the survival of human consciousness. The ancient Egyptians held a steadfast belief in an afterlife that transcended the confines of disappointment, loss, and distress. Contrary to the notion of "you can't take it with you," the prevailing perspective for much of Egyptian history was encapsulated by the sentiment "you keep it forever." The enduring concept envisioned a paradise, The Field of Reeds, on the other side of death—a continuation of earthly life, yet free from the shackles of sorrow. This profound view, while subject to fluctuations across different eras, remained remarkably constant. The paradise beyond was a sanctuary where all that was lost in the mortal realm could be rediscovered. Coinciding with this vision of the afterlife was an unwavering understanding of disembodied spirits—ghosts. Unlike the evolving perceptions of the afterlife, the belief in ghosts persisted unchanged from the earliest evidence throughout ancient Egyptian history. Ghosts were considered as tangible and authentic as any other facet of existence, a testament to the enduring and deeply rooted spiritual convictions of the ancient Egyptians. Her main research areas cover Egyptian revival graves in Victorian England and the life of Egyptologist and Architect, Joseph Bonomi Jr. Harmony Beyond the Veil: Ma'at and the Imperative of Proper Burial Central to Egyptian culture was the sacred principle of ma'at, an intricate dance of harmony and balance woven into the fabric of everyday life. Among the myriad expressions of ma'at, the proper burial of the deceased held particular significance. Egyptians perceived life as a unidirectional journey, commencing at birth and culminating in the afterlife. To ensure the soul's tranquil transition, meticulous provisions were made through tomb paintings, inscriptions, and statuary. These artefacts served as a spiritual tether, inviting the soul to benignly revisit the earthly realm while urging the spirit to hasten its departure to the afterlife. However, the appearance of a ghost, especially its interaction with the living, signalled a disruption in the natural order. This disturbance typically stemmed from a spirit's discontent with its body's burial, the condition of the tomb, or a perceived lack of respectful remembrance. Ghostly visitations were viewed as a tangible manifestation of imbalance, compelling the living to rectify the disturbances and restore ma'at, ensuring both the departed and the living coexisted in harmonious accord. Following a dramatic train accident, David Ditchfield was dragged under a speeding train in Cambridgeshire and nearly lost his life.
