Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the U.S., and makes up about a quarter of all energy-related GHG emissions in the world. Thus, we have ambitious goals when it comes to transportation, such as California's commitment to transition fully to electric vehicle sales by 2035. The U.S. bought over 1 million EVs through the end of 2023, which made almost 8% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. and 20% of auto sales in California. Globally, 9.5 million EVs were sold in 2023, a 31% increase from the prior year. But is this progress fast enough?  In today's episode, we talk with Dr. Beia Spiller—Transportation Program Director at Resources for the Future (RFF), a nonprofit that conducts economic and policy research on topics including energy and transportation—about the current state and the future of electric transportation, the related equity and environmental justice challenges we face, and how we can rethink mobility. We then chat with Chris Merola, a film student at USC, and Beth Prakash, a new EV owner in the Bay Area (who is also a presentation designer, check out her website here!), to hear about their experiences driving an EV. The Kosciuszko Bridge is one of New York City's most essential pieces of infrastructure, the hyphen in the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway that connects the two boroughs over Newtown Creek, the 3.5 mile creek which empties into the East River. The bridge is interestingly named for the Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko who fought during the American Revolution, then attempted to bring a similar revolutionary spirit to his home country, leading to the doomed Kościuszko Uprising of 1794.Kościuszko, the man, is a revered historical figure. The bridge, however, has not always been loved. And many non-Polish people even struggle to pronounce its name, inventing a half-dozen acceptable variants. The original Kościuszko Bridge was not exactly beloved by drivers, vexed by its inadequate handling of traffic and its poor roadways. Its glorious replacement, installed in two phases in 2017 and 2019, lights up the night sky -- and the filmy waters below. In this episode, Greg tells the entire story -- of both the man and the bridge. But it's also a story of Newtown Creek, the heavily polluted body of water which runs beneath it. How did this once placid creek become so notoriously filthy? And how did the most prominent bridge over that waterway become associated with an 18th century hero?PLUS The return of Robert Moses!Visit the website for more information

Williamsburg, Brooklyn has a rich immigrant history. Before the South Side became the Hasidic enclave that it is today, it was a much more eclectic immigrant neighborhood. Among its former residents is the writer Phillip Lopate, who grew up in what's now the heart of the Hasidic "shtetle".Phillip lived in Williamsburg from age 4 in 1947, until he reached about high school, but after his family moved out of Williamsburg, he returned daily to attend high school at Eastern District High.Phillip generously joined me in Williamsburg for a visit to his old haunts. We first stopped by his old place at 352 Broadway, right by the noisy train tracks, and then the apartment at 151 Ross Street, which is right off Lee Avenue. We also visited the famed former Eastern District High School, which I've written about extensively, and the public library that sits right across from it, and discussed the Brooklyn Queens Expressway's impact on the time Phillip lived in Williamsburg. We stopped over for knishes and rugelach, ambled along Lee Avenue to see Flaum's Deli, and said our goodbyes at Gottlieb's. It was a lovely afternoon!Phillip's brother Leonard Lopate is also well known as a famous radio personality. I've written about Leonard Lopate in Williamsburg before and hope to one day visit with Leonard. Thanks for watching. EPISODE 299: Part Two of our series on the history of Brooklyn Heights, one of New York City's oldest neighborhoods. By the 1880s, Brooklyn Heights had evolved from America's first suburb into the City of Brooklyn's most exclusive neighborhood, a tree-lined destination of fine architecture and glorious institutions. The Heights would go on a roller-coaster ride with the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge and the transformation of Brooklyn into a borough of Greater New York. The old-money wealthy classes would leave, and the stately homes would be carved into multi-family dwellings and boarding houses. The new subway would bring the bohemians of Greenwich Village into Brooklyn Heights, transforming it into an artist enclave for most of the century. But even with addition of trendy hotels and the Brooklyn Dodgers (whose front office was located here), the Heights faced an uncertain future. When Robert Moses began planning his Brooklyn Queens Expressway in the 1940s, he planned a route that would sever Brooklyn Heights and obliterate many of its most spectacular homes. It would take a devoted community and some very clever ideas to re-route that highway and cover it with something extraordinary -- a Promenade, allowing all New Yorkers to enjoy the exceptional views of New York Harbor. This drama only served to highlight the value and unique nature of Brooklyn Heights and its extraordinary architecture, leading New York to designate the former tranquil suburb on a plateau into the city's first historic district. Community activists have continued to push on the city and local representatives to save the promenade, the mayor backed the DOT’s proposal, hundreds of people took to the promenade in protest, an environmental study could reveal toxic air pollutants headed to the Heights, and new renderings show the highway would likely soar over part of the Brooklyn Bridge walkway for years. It's almost impossible to overstate the impact Robert Moses ("Master Builder") had on New York City, Long Island, and New York State.  Head of the Parks Commission plus countless other titles, he's the man who brought us the Brooklyn- Queens Expressway, the Long Island Expressway, the Cross- Bronx Expressway, the Triboro Bridge, the U.N., the 1964 World's Fair, hundreds of parks and beaches, massive block- like housing projects, and much much MUCH much more.   This is just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, this iceberg is so huge, we had to split all the Robert Moses info into two separate podcasts.  Enjoy!  Don't forget to check out the Facebook page for more pictures of the unbelievable devastation he wrought (or the glorious developments he accomplished, depending on your point of view).

In honor of Bastille Day, we interview Brendan Emmett Quigley. In the original series of Fill Me In (2008-10) there were rarely (if ever) show notes -- or if there were, they were lost to the blurry mists of time. But seriously, if you're going back to these old chestnuts, do you need show notes? No, you're a die-hard, stop-at-nothing, rabidly fanatical minion who will hungrily consume the glory days through badly recorded annals of Ryan and Brian lore. Your journey awaits.
