Our show takes us back in time to the pleasant summer vibes of Malibu Bikini Volleyball, a no-frill sports game released in 1993 for the underdog Atari Lynx handheld, developed by Hand Made Software and composed by Paul Tonge. Hand Made Software was a boutique first- (or second-) party game developer that produced original games exclusively for the Lynx and Jaguar from about 1990 to 1995, with a handful of previously unreleased games making their way out in the early 2000s. While this game is a pretty self explanatory late-era volleyball game for the Lynx, the music is definitely worth checking out. English composer Paul Tonge is a multi-talented musician, sound designer, sound driver developer, game producer and music director that worked from the late 80s to the early 2000s, starting on the C64 and Amiga and eventually retiring from games around the GBA era. He worked on games such as: Tinhead, The Tick, George Foreman for Real, and Samurai Jack: The Amulet of Time as well as working on a number of sound drivers across multiple console generations. It's a leisurely episode where we finally take the time for a deeper dive on Lynx sound and graphics hardware. We also cover Paul's work with "Sound Images", his joint audio production company with composer Tony Williams, and Paul's eventual work with Software Creations, the British software developer that was a powerhouse of game audio talent in the 90s even if their games were just alright. In any case, sit back and enjoy this early 90s mixtape of beachy volleyball tunes! Retro gaming is making a comeback, and it's not just for nostalgia's sake. Avram Piltch discusses his son's interest in retro games and how it has sparked a renewed interest in old consoles and games. Avram's son, who is only 12 years old, is more interested in retro games than in the latest games. He watches videos about old games, quizzes his father on trivia about old consoles and games, and gets excited about playing old games in their original format.Retro gaming is in the spotlightAvram discusses his visit to a retro game festival in New York, where he shares pictures of his son looking at old consoles and games. The festival had every major console in historical order, starting from the Magnavox Odyssey, and attendees could play on them. Avram also came across a tool called Taz bot, which automates gameplay on certain old consoles like the GameCube. This tool allows players to program joystick moves and button presses to play the perfect game. While some may question the purpose of using a tool like Taz bot to automate gameplay, it highlights the growing interest in retro gaming and the desire to experience old games in new ways. The festival also featured old consoles like the RCA Studio II, Atari Lynx, PSP, Xbox 360, and original Game Boy, showcasing the variety of retro gaming options available. One of the key reasons for the resurgence of retro gaming is the unique experience it offers. Playing old games on original consoles and CRT TVs provides a different feel and look compared to modern gaming setups. Additionally, there is a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the history of gaming that comes with playing retro games.Furthermore, retro gaming is not just about reliving the past but also about preserving gaming history. Events like retro game festivals and tools like Taz bot help keep old consoles and games alive for future generations to enjoy. The interest in retro gaming is not limited to older gamers but is also seen in younger generations like Avram's son, who are discovering the charm of old games.Old school gaming nostalgia festIn addition, Avram discusses a wide range of gaming devices, from the Space Ace and Dragon's Lair DVD games to the Virtual Boy and N64 playing Banjo-Kazooie. He also highlights unique consoles like the Game Tank, a homebrew console with its own set of games and cartridges, and the Dreamcast with its quirky peripherals like the fishing rod game. One of the most interesting aspects of the event was old educational systems like the Socrates and Sega pods, as well as handheld games like Merlin. The hosts also explore the evolution of gaming technology, from the Commodore PET and K-Pro computers to the Amstrad with its tape drive built into the keyboard.Avram and Scott share their experiences playing retro games and exploring the history of gaming, highlighting the creativity and innovation of early game developers. They also discuss the appeal of retro gaming for both seasoned gamers and newcomers, emphasizing the nostalgia and sense of nostalgia that comes with revisiting classic games and consoles.Controller matters for retro gamingAvram and Scott discuss the importance of controllers in retro gaming. They highlight the significance of using the original controllers that were designed for specific gaming consoles, as opposed to using modern controllers or emulators. They emphasize that the controller matters greatly in the gaming experience, as it affects the feel and gameplay of the retro games.Avram mentions examples of retro gaming controllers, such as the Atari joystick and the wheel controller for Atari Pong games. He discusses how the design and functionality of these controllers contribute to the overall gaming experience and how using the original controllers can enhance the nostalgia and authenticity of playing retro games.Additionally, the pair touches upon the idea of modifying retro gaming controllers to work with modern devices, such as installing USB connections in the controllers to use them with newer gaming systems. They explore the technical aspects of retrofitting retro controllers and the potential challenges involved in the process.Furthermore, Scott discusses the significance of Nintendo releasing wireless NES and SNES controllers for the Switch to enhance the gameplay experience of playing classic games on modern consoles. He emphasizes that the design and functionality of the controllers are integral to the gaming experience and that using the original controllers can enhance the overall gameplay and nostalgia of retro gaming.

Birds and backyard ambience — as spring descends upon the Piedmont, so do the birds. And they were chatty this morning, so I stuck my microphone out the window. That's about all there is to say — Oh, stay away from Jimmy Connors tennis on the Atari Lynx. I found it cheap on eBay and decided what the heck. Watching Jimmy Connors in the early 90s at the US Open was fun. I thought that maybe his namesake handheld lynx game might that all over the tennis court rackets blazing fun? It doesn't. In the game, it is impossible to serve the ball, and when you return a serve, the computer effortlessly lobs it back. A blinking yellow square tells you where you need to position your player to return, so you run to it. There's like a second delay from button press to avatar swing, and you miss. Jimmy Connors was Mr. Volley. The game is death volley. Ooph — look the only reason to buy Jimmy Connors Tennis is to hear the voice of Jimmy Connors and crude lip movements as the legend welcomes you to the hardest ****** tennis game of all time.

TCW Podcast Episode 200 - The History of Handheld Games Part 3   In our concluding episode exploring the evolution of handheld games, we kick off with the Amiga and the allure of bouncing balls before delving into the Atari Lynx, an early and captivating handheld console. Despite its appeal, the Lynx struggled against challenges like its high price, the limited library of engaging games, and subpar battery life, ultimately being overshadowed by the Nintendo Game Boy—a device well-suited for puzzle games. Sega's Game Gear, whose origin may have stolen its design from Nintendo or Epyx- It's complicated. The Game Gear was notable but never had a lasting impact. Gunpei Yokoi took a daring leap with the Virtual Boy, which unfortunately flopped, returning to familiar ground with the Game Boy Pocket. Yokoi's departure coincided with the rise of Pokémon, injecting new vitality into handheld gaming. Yokoi later founded his own company, contributing to the development of Bandai's Wonderswan. This prompted Nintendo's response with the Game Boy Color. Despite various attempts, no other company has managed to dethrone Nintendo as the undisputed king of handheld consoles.   Brownest of the brown Liquors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n39897a9hNk Amiga Bouncing Ball CES 4K: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlAhRJjOhDg Atari Lynx Cooler Than You Think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXZUX8803Wg Lynx - Chip's Challenge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw4EFHGemfQ Lynx - Blue Lightning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKUJsqDux6A Lynx - Gauntlet The Third Encounter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZplHuUekqF8 Lynx - Kalax: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBPNolD7Fmc Lynx - California Games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAc8Su1huLE Game Boy - Super Mario Land: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGLmpjWTTnI Game Boy - Tetris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQwohHgrk2s Game Boy - Doctor Mario: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU9rkqHSiTg Game Boy - Allyway: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nyoNner2NH0 Game Boy JP Launch Commercial 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkOk_E_3J0E Game Boy JP Launch Commercial 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hXxgNT3ib0 Virtual Boy Overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn8TFhK87ZM Types of Batteries Explained: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dId6loUiV_0&t=423s Duracell Commercial (1982): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOe_Xohknjc First Energizer Bunny Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiFQsxGUQOI Game Boy Pocket Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwvZSWQAMak Game Boy Pocket - Generation Gap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPje2eIf2v8 Pokémon Green: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1-rXw07VNA Game Boy Pocket and Light: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yz24JQpSHY Game Boy Color Commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcRUaEftYJ4&list=PLy22iKf8SNXgNl8NpIqZX5du72dnDdE9F Bandai Wonderswan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5zLek3wPG8 Pokémon Silver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWVOYuRHaQ8 Space Odyssey: https://archive.org/details/2015MonnensGoldberg   New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward.

Slowly, over the years, handheld devices diminished until it was just Nintendo & Sony left, until Sony decided to leave the race too crowning Nintendo as king. Fast forward to now and we're seeing a resurgence of handheld gaming, in our opinion paved by the success of Nintendo's hybrid console, the Nintendo Switch. We have tonnes of PC based Windows handhelds on offer with the newest being ASUS's entry, the ROG Ally, retro emulation devices, a rumoured new Sony PlayStation handheld, codenamed: Q-Lite, Valve's Steam Deck and a brand new Nintendo Switch to be announced at any moment...

On this episode: Atari 50th Anniversary : Atari 50th – The Anniversary Celebration announced for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC Atari is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and with it, the spark that launched the modern video game industry. It has been five decades since a small team in Silicon Valley first combined their creativity, curiosity and passion into making video games and hardware. The result of their efforts was Atari, one of the most recognizable and enduring entertainment and pop culture brands in the world. Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration takes players on an interactive journey through 50 years of video games via interviews with designers, developers and industry leaders, documentary footage, product design documents, high-resolution original artwork, and a specially-curated list of more than 90 playable games. At the heart of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration are the Interactive Timelines, which combine historical trivia, digital artifacts, all-new video interviews, and playable games into one singular experience. When you encounter a game in the Timeline, you can immediately play it without losing your place. The massive list of games spans six original Atari console and home computer platforms and generations of arcade titles, the most ever included in a collection by the team at Digital Eclipse. For the first time ever, games from the cult favorite Atari Jaguar and Atari Lynx platforms will be playable on modern consoles. Behind every game are the stories of Atari, what was happening at the company, what went into the creation of the games and the hardware on which they ran, all told by the people who were there. It is a rare opportunity to get a rich behind-the-scenes look at the history of video games. In addition to presenting these Atari classics exactly as they were, the talented team at Digital Eclipse has also created the Reimagined series—six new games that revisit, mash-up and reimagine Atari Classics. Each of these new games is included in Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. Atari is enjoying its 50th anniversary this year since it changed the world with gaming. And while the company already debuted some limited-edition working Atari 2600 cartridges, Atari just announced its 50th Anniversary Celebration game pack. The new Atari collection features over 90 games spanning over five decades, thanks to the Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, ST, Jaguar, and Lynx. Better yet, there will be six all-new titles when it comes out later this year. tari's 50th Anniversary Celebration will be available for the Nintendo Switch, Atari VCS, Xbox, PlayStation, and PCs. Many fans will be happy to see this release offer Jaguar and Lynx games on modern consoles for the first time. Atari has partnered with Digital Eclipse on the release, who's one of the best in retro game collections and emulation. As a result, players can expect all sorts of modern conveniences to make the experience as fun as possible. The company added over 60 minutes of exclusive interviews with Atari game developers and a bunch of never-seen-before images, assets, and other Atari goods that fans will surely love. While all the old games are exciting, you'll also love the six all-new titles “inspired by the classics.” According to Atari, those are Swordquest: AirWorld, Haunted Houses, VCTR-SCTR, Neo Breakout, Quadratank, and Yars' Revenge Reimagined. The older generation will surely appreciate the 4th and final game in the Swordquest series.

Some podcasters just want to watch the world burn. We just want to talk about Batman. With the newest Bat-flick coming in March, fellow mega-Bat-fan Paul and I wanted to walk through Batman's history in video games. We do kind of breeze through the entire history of Batman games, but we focus most of our discussion on the games we've played (or that seem odd or important). We also talk more broadly about our own history with the character and universe, our favorite villains and Batman actors, toys, and all kinds of other Bat-details. We also talk about Sony's acquisition of Bungie, which Nintendo character we think would start an OnlyFans, Hitman 2 and 3, and more. Contact us: prettypixelspodcast@gmail.com We're on Twitter: @Losperman (Joey) The timestamps below are mostly only for major discussion points. There are a bit too many games and some we barely talk about. We play the best hand held with the worst battery life. The Game Gear[a] is an 8-bit fourth generation handheld game console released by Sega on October 6, 1990 in Japan, in April 1991 throughout North America and Europe, and during 1992 in Australia. The Game Gear primarily competed with Nintendo's Game Boy, the Atari Lynx, and NEC's TurboExpress. It shares much of its hardware with the Master System, and can play Master System games by the use of an adapter. Sega positioned the Game Gear, which had a full-color backlit screen with a landscape format, as a technologically superior handheld to the Game Boy. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/retro-renegades/support

Most of you are well aware that The Cartridge Family is an elaborate front for the fam's Nintendo Switch enthusiast fan-club, but we sincerely make no effort this show to conceal our true form. Nintendo Directs are exciting, though, so can you blame us? After our recap of the Nintendo Direct Mini, the family takes a look back at the Xbox Original's Panzer Dragoon Orta, a game that turned 15 years old just a few days back. Following that, Buffa says “you think that game's old?” and bestows upon us Gates of Zendocon, a 29 year old morsel originally released on the Atari Lynx in the late 1980s. After the requisite beatdown, we discuss our upcoming Game Club which of course we invite any and all of you to participate in. Andrew and I (and perhaps John if he can buckle down and focus, for once) will be playing Pyre and we'll be discussing the game, in its entirety, and the end of next week's show. Join us, won't you?
