In this episode I enjoyed reconnecting with Rohan Gunatillake who is a digital innovator and entrepreneur in the field of health, wellbeing and mindfulness. He is creator of the best-selling app Buddhify, author of the book Modern Mindfulness, and host of the surprisingly good Meditative Story podcast. In addition he also works with the National Health Service in Scotland making digital technology for clinicians, care workers and citizens. Based in Glasgow, Rohan and I first met over a decade ago at the UK Innovation Foundation Nesta, where we worked together on harnessing social media for social impact. And more than most people I know, he really strives to live in the present moment and focus on what is really happening right now. I really like the way he effortlessly switches between everything from parkour, to cooking, to digital technologies, to practical mindfulness, leading to deeper insights about life, the universe and everything, all in one conversation. In particular I loved what he said about seeing a coil of rope instead of a snake, so that the impossible becomes possible. And I also really liked the bit towards the end about building thresholds, and that which connects us also divides us. Anyway I hope you enjoyed it too and if you want to find out more about Rohan and some of the things we talked about then please visit: https://rohangunatillake.com/ https://buddhify.com/ https://meditativestory.com/ http://www.mindfulnesseverywhere.io/ https://nds.nhs.scot/ https://thenewpossible.space/ To find out more about Liminal or to join our community, please visit https://www.weareliminal.co/

Accessibility is Simple - Include as Large of an Audience As Possible Accessibility adds to your value as an entrepreneur and improves SEO. Everything starts on your phone; design for small and think about how we communicate. Plan for the worst-case and then you will make it easy for everyone. Get someone else to use your website to see how they use it; this is a basic UX principle, Joe reminds us. "Accessibility is about making your services and your business available to all people." Joe Simpson, Jr. It is worth noting that if your business comes under litigation (class action) for ADA (physical) issues they can also add digital issues. Yes, they can throw your business website into the class action on path-of-travel and other ADA issues with your property. Accessibility and Websites "The great things about WordPress is that a lot of themes are accessible out of the box." Joe Simpson, Jr. "When I think about accessibility, I ask people to open up their website, close their eyes, and hit the tab key three times. Do you know where it is supposed to be?" Joe Simpson, Jr. https://twitter.com/Highforge/status/1270067227304185856 Accessibility and Alt Tags "With alt tags, context of the tex hat is around the image [is important]." Joe Simpson, Jr. If the image is decorative, then mark it as such. The WP Admin now has that feature. Accessibility and Search Good semantic HTML is good for accessibility and SEO efforts. Don't forget all of the great voice assistants that everyone uses. "When I heard that people are listening to their emails [I knew accessibility has a larger audience]." Jason Tucker Accessibility and Hashtags When you CamelCase a hashtag it's not only easier for the sighted to read it, but screen readers will read it to a user as two separate words. CamelCase is capitalizing the first letter in each word. Remember that punctuation isn't https://twitter.com/redcrew/status/1283388363714826241 Accessibility and Social Media Images Whenever possible, use alt descriptions for images that you use on social media as well. This helps you reach a much larger audience. Twitter allows you to write alt tags for your photos as well as GIF library images you post. Tool Or Tip Of The Week Your ad could have been here. Just sayin' Joe recommends Buddhify to help you meditate on the go. Jason recommends Grabatar to sync your contacts with their Gravatars. There are thousands of religious apps offering to help you worship in the right way. In the first of a new season exploring the digital world and the spiritual world, Sophia Smith Galer considers whether they’re a quick convenience, or a legitimate means of getting closer to your God, and asks if they are all really as pious as they seem? Search iTunes, Google Play or the App Store and you will find thousands of apps offering to help you practise your religion. And as our smart phones become more and more essential to daily life, millions of us are downloading. But is this just convenience? Or a new way of practising our faith? In the US, the ‘OneTable’ app aims to bring young Jews without their own religious community, to celebrate the Friday night ritual of Shabbat. The app connects them with others in their area and it’s currently reaching up to 100,000 participants in 185 cities across the states. But for Orthodox Jews, using new technology is strictly forbidden. In the UK, in the last year, the Church of England’s prayer apps were accessed more than five million times. But the church is incredibly worried as actual attendance is still falling. But can using religion apps be a spiritual experience in itself? Independent developer Rohan Gunatillake, the Buddhist founder of mindfulness app Buddhify, says he’s not looking for people to convert – he’s just happy if the app helps them. Many major faiths have invested millions in religious apps to help them engage with young people who they feel are turning their backs on going to organised services. But is it always clear to users when a religious organisation is funding an app? And security research has also shown that overall, Bible apps have more malware than gambling apps! Heart and Soul investigates whether some religion apps are stealing your data rather than cleansing your soul. Presented by Sophia Smith Galer Produced by Julia Paul (Photo credit: Getty Images)

You know the feeling: You look forward to plopping into bed all evening, but once you're finally there you can't seem to turn off your brain. Everything you could ever possibly contemplate suddenly seems to worry you. What is your sales pipeline looking like? How are the kids doing? Why is the world...the way that it is? Whether it's something personal, professional or regarding the large grey area in between, we all lay awake at night worrying from time to time. For entrepreneurs, that might be more often than not. While we've all heard study after study about how important a good night's rest is to our success and well being, worrying about not getting enough sleep just, ironically, keeps us up longer. Our consensus? Chances are, if it enters your brain while you're laying in bed, it's not as big of a deal as it seems. Still, how can we tell our brain to chill out (for just a few hours, at least) so we can get some rest? Mentioned in this episode: Buddhify, the meditation app: https://buddhify.com/
In this episode, I interview Buddhify app founder and author of Modern Mindfulness Rohan Gunatillake. Rohan Gunatillake first started meditating while at university and soon afterward began work for a large technology company in London. As his interest in meditation grew, he realized that what he was being taught felt very separate from the fast-paced, digital, urban life he was living. So alongside all the hours of formal meditation, study, and long retreats; Rohan went on a mission to work out how to integrate traditional mindfulness into the realities of his day to day life. Nick Seneka Jankel is a Cambridge-educated scientist who, very reluctantly at first, was called to become a spiritual teacher. He struggled for many years with how to reconcile his profound experiences of the transformational power of spirituality and meditation with his belief in science and reason (and his disdain for superstitions of any kind). Realizing millions of people who identify as “spiritual not religious” – around 25% of the US population today – struggle with the same thing, he has spent the last few years writing a book that tells of his quest to unite science and wisdom into a rigorous and radical life philosophy that ensures we can heal ourselves, transform our problems and thrive in life, in love, and in leadership. Nick is not a traditional spiritual teacher and transformational coach. He has taught at the business schools of Yale & Oxford, spoken at No.10 Downing Street by invite of the Prime Minister, contributed to The Economist and The Guardian, and was a TV host on a network show for the BBC. He has also been a guest on Hay House Radio, spoken at Google HQ, headlined at Conscious Life Expo in LA and shared his ideas on science and spirituality at Aspen Ideas Festival. This episode I'm speaking with Hugh Van Cuylenburg from The Resilience Project. The name might not be familiar to you but he has had a huge impact on some of the most famous names in Australia. From Australian cricketer Steve Smith, to Brownlow medallist Dusty Martin to Australian netball captain, Caitlin Bassett. I'm also excited for this episode because Hugh has actually had an impact on my life too. The origins of The Resilience Project begun when Hugh was volunteering in India after a cricket tour over there. He volunteered at a school for a couple of weeks that didn't even have running water, but he noticed that the people were the happiest that he ever met despite having relatively little. Unknowingly this would lead him onto a journey to find out where real happiness comes from. What did he find out? They practice gratitude, empathy and mindfulness every day; Gratitude: The ability to pay attention to what you've got, not what you don't have. It's not waiting to be happy when you have the next best thing (be it some new shoes, or a new car). Empathy: The ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes. The more empathetic you are, the more likely you are to do something kind. Hugh says the older we get the more we actually move away from looking out for others. Mindfulness: Can be a buzzword in society these days but mindfulness is the ability to be calm and present. Often it's sitting still, and potentially using an app like Headspace, Calm, Buddhify or The Resilience Project's app to help calm your body. After India, Hugh went onto do a Masters to look into where happiness comes from. He started doing presentations for free at schools about what he learnt and the ripples of Hugh's message started to spread. It has spread to schools, businesses and professional sporting teams all over Australia. It has grown so much that as of mid January 2019 he is already booked up for the whole of the year. If you would like to book Hugh to come speak at your school, workplace or sporting club then unfortunately you'll have to book in 2020. However, you can still buy tickets to some of his larger events throughout the year. There’s a lot of talk about mindfulness and with good reason. Mindfulness helps us to slow down our overthinking brains, to let go of rehashing what’s already happened or imagining what could or could not happen next. To just be here, in this moment, in what’s real in our lives right now without judging it or trying to change it. In this episode we look at: What mindfulness is What the benefits are of practising mindfulness How mindfulness reduces how stressed we feel and gets us out of worrying mode How to take a micro mindful moment How mindfulness can be integrated into our day rather than added to it Resources Books on mindfulness: Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mindfulness by Mark Williams and Danny Penman Meditation apps: Mindfulness, Headspace, Calm, and Buddhify

All month long, we've been sharing information here at EntreArchitect Podcast and over at the blog on the many ways that technology can help us be better architects. At times, technology can be a burden. It can be overwhelming. It can be complicated and frustrating. It can be time consuming and distracting. Truthfully, technology can be downright stressful. Over two years ago Mark decided to step away from news in every form: TV, radio, print and internet. The day he stopped listening to all that stuff and started paying attention to the things that actually were in his control, his stress was radically reduced. Mark encourages you to commit to a https://entrearchitect.com/2015/12/01/full-media-blackout/ (full media blackout) by eliminating any technology that causes you stress. What if we could use technology to reduce our stress? This week at EntreArchitect Podcast, Mark will share 5 Ways to Use Technology to Reduce Our Stress. Mark’s commitment is to make the world a better place by doing more things within his control, and you can do the same thing. Music // Music has always been used to reduce stress. We have access to music anytime and anywhere depending on what we’re in the mood for. Meditation // As meditation has become more mainstream, more are turning to this focused practice of sitting in silence for a period of time. Check out our list of recommended apps below. Exercise // Of course we can exercise without technology, but there’s so many ways to use great technology to help you get out there and get moving! Find things that work with your activities to keep you motivated. Use technology to set reminders and block time to exercise! Automation // We’re doing so many things every day and all day long, and the easiest way to slim down that burden is to automate things. Check out the post on the blog this week, https://entrearchitect.com/2016/06/14/automate-architecture-firm/ (How to Automate Your Small Firm Architecture Studio), for ideas how to do this and keep searching for others that work for you. The fewer tasks we have, the less stressed we’ll be. Develop Systems // It’s so important to the success of our businesses and to our health. Developing systems allow us to feel confident that the work will get done without us so we can focus on the things we love. Developing systems is the most important goal that you can set for your success. What are some ways you use technology to reduce your stress? Tell us about them in the comments below! Tom Blachford and Kate Ballis are one of my favourite creative couples. They are both photographers, though this hasn’t always been the case. For the first few years of their relationship, it was only Tom who was the photographer, while Kate was working as a lawyer. Yet what started as a shared passion between them has grown into a thriving art practice and ever-expanding commercial endeavour. They have built a highly successful wedding photography company, RaspberryRobot, which allows them to support their travel adventures - and it was on one such journey that Tom fell in love with the architecture of Palm Springs, which led him to create the Midnight Modern series, which opens in Sydney this Thursday, May 26 at The Black Eye Gallery in Darlinghurst in Sydney. Of all the insights into their life and process that they shared, it was the way in which they combined their strengths to maximize both of their offerings as artists that I really admired. I was very excited to sit down and chat with Tom – and Kate to talk about sharing life, space and practice in this, The Naked Creative Show: Couples Edition, all about Tom Blachford and Kate Ballis. Midnight Modern by Tom Blachford opens Thursday, May 26 at The Black Eye Gallery in Darlinghurst. In this episode we talk with Rohan Gunatillake, creator of the popular meditation app Buddhify
We’re joined again by a regular contributor of Buddhist Geeks and blogger at 21awake.com, Rohan Gunatillake. Rohan joins us to explore three areas in which the aesthetic of meditation could be improved. Specifcally these areas are: 1) language, 2) look & feel, & 3) delivery models. We then explore various ideas on how to meet these design challenges with design-specific solutions. Rohan suggests that taking a co-design approach to these challenges, including the users more fully into the design process, is a great first step. In addition he shares details on a project that he’s currently working on, a mobile application called Buddhify, which is a specific example of improving the aesthetic of meditation through technological and design innovations.
