Have you ever wondered what tools a points and miles expert uses to book smarter, earn faster, and stay organized while traveling? In this solo episode of Revolutionizing Your Journey, host DeAndre Coke breaks down his personal travel toolkit—from the apps that help him choose the right credit card at checkout, to the tools he swears by for booking award flights and organizing itineraries. From automating credit card offers with Card Pointers to searching for award flights with tools like PointsYeah and Seats.aero, DeAndre walks listeners through each step of his travel planning process. He also discusses the value of platforms like Zil Money for earning points on business expenses, and apps like TripIt for keeping itineraries organized. This episode offers practical insights for travelers looking to simplify and optimize their rewards-based travel.  This post contains affiliate links for some of the products mentioned, but we personally use and pay for most of these services ourselves because we believe in their value. Zil Money: Platform that lets businesses earn points by processing payroll through credit cards—useful for hitting sign-up bonuses and earning high multipliers. Travel Freely: This tool tracks credit card annual fees and sign-up bonuses and helps users comply with Chase's 5/24 rule. PointsYeah: Award flight search engine with features like Daydream Explorer and live seat maps, making it easier to spot high-value redemptions. Seats.aero: A power-user tool for finding award seat availability, especially useful for last-minute and expert-level searches. Points Path:  The first award flight search engine that runs directly in Google Flights, and provides both the cash price and points price of many flights. FlightConnections: Visualization tool showing all direct routes between airports—great for mapping international travel and alliance-specific itineraries. Boldly Go Calculators: Transfer Bonus Calculator and Point Redemption Calculator simplify reward math and show real point value. Point.me: Beginner-friendly award search tool that includes step-by-step guides and Amex cardholder access for free. Thrifty Traveler: Subscription service that sends alerts for award availability, mistake fares, and significant cash deals. In episode 211, Allison Schaaf, founder of Prep Dish, discusses the best digital planner apps for home planning and management with her husband and shares what has worked well for them to navigate their family's schedules, trips, and activities. ‌ Allison and her husband use Google Calendar as an invaluable shared digital planning resource to help them ensure everything at home runs smoothly. With this tool, Allison's husband is able to share the details of his work schedule, but Allison is able to pull up his calendar notes as needed without overwhelming her own calendar. This schedule view helps the family see where there might be overlap with work and daily family tasks. Allison's husband also books all of his work travel through Tripit, which can sync with their Google Calendar apps. ‌ Together, Allison and her husband also have a shared calendar for the kids' schedules. Allison has her own personal digital calendar with combined work and personal tasks. She uses this digital tool in conjunction with a portable classic paper planner. Allison finds putting pen to paper extremely helpful in managing day-to-day life and focusing on important tasks that, when completed, will help propel bigger goals forward. ‌ A weekly meeting helps Allison and her husband review upcoming scheduling conflicts and work out details with their au pair. They also use this time to plan ahead over the upcoming weeks or month, especially if a new event or activity has recently been added to their schedules. Allison has also used the Trello App as a digital tool to help her organize specific longer-term projects and keep track of detailed project tasks. ‌ Connect with Allison: PrepDish.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/prepdish/ Get your FREE mealplan at PrepDish.com/podcast OR text the word mealprep to 33777 ‌ Resources mentioned in this podcast: Get your free trial at prepdish.com/mpm for two weeks of free meal plans! ‌ Interview with Sarah Hart-Unger: https://prepdish.com/podcast-show-notes/ep209/ Google Calendar: https://calendar.google.com/ Tripit: https://www.tripit.com/ Trello App: https://trello.com/

We were last in Europe in the Summer of 2023! By far, your biggest single expense you will deal with on any trip are your tickets to get you to your destination! How do you choose wisely? Well, there's more to consider than just price. Most airlines like to route travelers from smaller airports to designated hubs that allows for easy transfer to international flights. When deciding which tickets to purchase, take into consideration that hub and whether or not it's convenient for your whole group to meet at or simply pass through. Choose accordingly! In addition to your wait time, you may have others, like grandma and grandpa, joining you on your trip to, say, Europe. Consider having them meet you at your hub so you can all fly to your final destination together. This gives you more adult hands on the longest leg of your trip. Whether I'm traveling on my own or with a group, I use the TripIt app to keep my itinerary straight. This app imports your email details into an easy to use timeline that helps you ensure that all of your reservations are taken care of and not overlapping. This includes flights, lodging, sites and transportation. Once you have a trip started, you can share it with all of the travelers in your group and interested parties who need to know where you are. Everyone in your group can keep up with the planning progress and share in the excitement.  You will save time and money by carrying on/Plan your luggage needs. When buying your tickets, check into the luggage policies. Will the amount of bags you are taking be covered? What are the stroller and car seat policies? Can you choose your seats ahead of times? What are the carry-on requirements? Packing for a trip is dicey. You want to take everything you will need but you don't want to lug it all around. Research the best advice out there and keep it to a minimum. Checking for good laundry options will also help you pair down your packing.  There's only one way to get to a destination/ Choose an alternative airport. You are headed to London and the tickets are expensive. However, there's a $500.00 difference from home to Paris. Okay, get to Paris and take the train straight into St. Pancreas Station. You just saved about $1000.00! Consider other airport alternatives: Shannon and Dublin, Warsaw and Krakow, Glasgow and Edinburgh, the list goes on. You may find that you have the opportunity for an adventure you never even considered. having a good plan to get back to reality isn't such a bad idea. This is also a good time to check on customs policies for your destination. For example, travelers go through customs before boarding flights in Dublin. Know what to expect. Everybody has to fly together. Choose a family friendly hub.Share your trip wisely.Have an exit strategy.

Today, LaunchDarkly has 4,000 customers and an annual return revenue rate of $100 million. We interviewed Harbaugh for our Tech Founder Odyssey series on The New Stack Makers about her journey and LaunchDarkly's work. The interview starts with this question about the timing of dev releases and the relationship between developers and other constituencies, particularly the marketing organization. LaunchDarkly is the number one feature management company, Harbaugh said. "Their mission is to provide services to launch software in a measured, controlled fashion. Harbaugh and Kodumal, CTO, founded the company on the premise that software development and releasing software is arduous. "You wonder whether you're building the right thing," Harbaugh said, who has worked as both an engineer and a product manager. "Once you get it out to the market, it often is not quite right. And then you just run this huge risk of how do you fix things on the fly." Feature flagging was a technique that a lot of software companies did. Harbaugh worked at Tripit, a travel service, where they used feature flags as did companies such as Atlassian, where Kodumal had developed software. "So the kernel of LaunchDarkly, when we started in 2014, was to make this technique of feature flagging into a movement called feature management, to allow everybody to build better software faster, in a safer way." LaunchDarkly allows companies to release features however granular an organization wants, allowing a developer to push a release into production in different pieces at different times, Harbaugh said. So, a marketing organization can send a release out even after the developer team has released it into production. "So, for example, if, we were running a release, and we wanted somebody from The New Stack to see it first, the marketing person could turn it on just for you." Harbaugh describes herself as a huge geek. But she also gets it in a rare way for geeks and non-geeks alike. She and Kodumal took a concept used effectively by develops, transforming it into a service that provides feature management for a broader customer base, like the marketer wanting to push releases out in a granular way for a launch on the East Coast that is pre-programmed with feature flags in advance from the company office the previous day in San Francisco. The idea is novel, but like many intelligent, technical founders, Harbaugh's journey reflects her place today. She's a leader in the space, and a fun person to talk to, so we hope you enjoy this latest episode in our tech founder series from The New Stack Makers.

LaunchDarkly is a pioneer in the feature management space. Founded in 2014, while the agile and cloud movements were still relatively nascent, LaunchDarkly was ahead of its time. They have now scaled to a $3 billion company, serving over 4,000 customers. In this episode, LaunchDarkly Co-Founder and CEO Edith Harbaugh takes us back to her initial insight as an engineering manager and product leader at TripIt, deeply versed in the value of systematic feature flagging, and keenly aware of how underutilized it was by many other dev teams. She shares the conviction required to build a product that most buyers in Silicon Valley weren't yet looking for, and how she engaged her network to gain initial design partners for the product that would come to define the feature management space.
