A Fresh Story, season 3, episode 18 We had the chance to talk to CEO, and working mom, Kelley Higney! Kelley is brilliant, lovely, and so passionate about changing the world with her product, Bug Bite Thing. We chatted with Kelley about her career change, making fresh starts, being a working mom, becoming a CEO, and of course…going on Shark Tank! Kelley Higney is the founder and CEO of Bug Bite Thing, the leader in providing consumers with chemical-free first aid products, including its insect bite relief suction tool which is Amazon's #1 seller for insect bite relief with nearly 90,000 reviews and its tick remover tweezer tool approved for both people and pets that launched this summer.  Determination to find a natural alternative to the available remedies on the market that would alleviate her six-month-old daughter's constantly suffering from mosquito bites, led to her discovery of an unfamiliar product that uses suction to remove the irritant. Then, after securing exclusive distribution rights to the product, she branded it Bug Bite Thing and has since been a “Mom on a Mission,” educating the world on the most effective, chemical-free solution for insect bite relief.   The company gained national recognition in October 2019 when Kelley and her mother, Ellen McAlister, appeared on ABC's hit show, ‘Shark Tank.' All the Sharks were biting with offers to invest in the business, but it was Lori Greiner's ‘Golden Ticket' offer that secured the partnership. In April 2021, Kelley and her mother returned to ‘Shark Tank.' This time, they shared details on the company's transformation into a multi-million dollar enterprise following their first appearance on the show. Kelley is a member of the Fast Company Executive Board and Forbes Business Council and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Gold Stevie Award for ‘Female Executive of the Year' by the 2022 Stevie Awards for Women in Business and named a “Top Mamaprenistas” by the 2022 Entreprenista 100. She is active within the South Florida community where she resides and teaches teens through Bug Bite Thing's Entrepreneurship in Action Program in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County. She lives in Port St. Lucie with her husband and two daughters. Talkin' Tank with Ally and Abdullah

Ally purposely subjects herself to the stings of southern Glendale's notoriously ravenous mosquitoes as Abdullah looks on in horror, all in an effort to test the effectiveness of the cleverly named Bug Bite Thing, an item that looks like a penis pump that makes your penis smaller, and is only marginally good at treating bug bites. Does this “Thing” work? Where does the saliverpoison actually go? And why are untrained civilians unwittingly using this it to suck pieces or their faces off? The answers to none of these on this episode of Talkin Tank.

When Kelley Higney moved to Florida, she knew she'd face some challenges: She was a young mother in a new state. She was in a new house in a new town. But there was one problem she didn't expect: her daughter's severe reactions to mosquito bites. Higney would watch helplessly as her six-month-old daughter's limbs would swell just minutes after being bitten. After trying everything she could – every ointment, every gimmick – Higney knew she was going to have to find an answer on her own. She did some research, and found an answer in a strange little tube: a suction tool that could pull the venom and saliva out of the bite, stopping the allergic reaction before it even had the chance to start. “I started testing with just this one little sample I had purchased on friends and family,” Higney said. “Everybody was getting similar reactions and that's when I'm like, okay, maybe I'm onto something. So I was able to get in touch with the factory. I pitched them my idea. I told them that every mom and everybody that was suffering here needed to know about this product because it's, it was life-changing for me and my family.”So how did Kelley take a quest to help her daughter and turn it into a powerhouse company with products in 25,000 retailers and 25 different countries? Find out on this week's episode of The Journey.Main Takeaways:Don't Be Afraid to Start Small: Good ideas rarely explode overnight, and good entrepreneurs know the value of a slower start. Most businesses need to grow and evolve slowly, and it's an entrepreneur's job to find customers whoever and wherever possible, even if it means pitching and selling at a local market or your child's school functions.Surround Yourself with People Who Can Help You Grow: Regardless of when or if your business takes off, you need to have a network of people to lean on and learn from. Find people you admire — even within your own family — and tap into them for advice, feedback, or support to take your business to the next level.Protect Your Product: Good ideas and successful products will always be met with copycats. To ensure that those imitators don't steal your market share, do your homework and take the steps necessary to protect yourself.---This season of the Journey is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by UPS. When you first start a company or launch a product, you always have big dreams. You picture the massive deals, the millions in revenue, the corner offices and hiring a huge team. But before any of that happens, you have to tamp down those dreams and live in the real world, doing the hard, often year-long work on the ground proving your concept, talking to anyone who is willing to give you feedback, and knocking on doors to try to make a single sale. Kelley Higney trodded that path — in fact, she got her start selling her product at her daughter's bake sales. Her fellow moms were her beta testers and, but they were also the wellspring of feedback and proof of concept she needed to bring her product to the next level… and to those great heights most people dream of.Kelley is the founder and CEO of Bug Bite Thing, a safe, chemical-free solution for stopping a reaction to bug bites in their tracks. Today, Bug Bite Thing is available in more than 25,000 stores and has the backing of Shark Tank shark, Lori Grenier (who even gave Kelley her famous “Golden Ticket” when Kelley appeared on the show). On this episode of Up Next in Commerce, Kelley broke down all of the hurdles she had to overcome to reach that point. She discusses the strategies she used to protect her brand before even going into distribution, and she talks about the importance of community and feedback. Plus, stick around to hear about how she and Lori work together. Enjoy this episode!Main Takeaways:Any Feedback is Good Feedback: Even when you are just starting out, you should be pitching your product and accepting feedback from anyone and everyone. The early users and beta testers will guide you through your initial iterations and highlight some problem areas you might be blind to that you can address before going more mainstream.Distribution is a Dangerous Game: It's not a matter of if, but when copycats will come after you. When you start to distribute widely, copycats will come out of the woodwork and you have to be prepared. Do the work beforehand to learn how to protect your brand and fight against knockoffs. Even if you think you don't qualify for a patent or other legal protection, reach out and try because it's better to have any kind of legal backing than none at all.Find a Mentor: You don't need to go on Shark Tank to find a business mentor. There are people in your network or on the periphery who you should tap into and who can guide you through the highs and lows of business. Doing it on your own is a pipedream. Every successful person has had a team behind him or her, and the truth is, having help will get you to your goals faster. For an in-depth look at this episode, check out the full transcript below. One of the hardest questions for entrepreneurs is knowing when to go all in. How do you know you are ready to go headfirst into the business? For Kelley Higney, founder and CEO of Bug Bite Thing, the realization came when she had customers tracking her down in the parking lot after she sold her product at her daughter's bake sales. With amazing customer feedback, Kelley realized she was onto something, sold her house, and invested that money into her first big batch of inventory. Kelley says it was terrifying, especially with a young family. Before she could go all in on Bug Bite Thing, she created a nest egg as a backup plan. She also did extensive proof of concept testing by selling her product in small quantities at local events like farmers' markets and bake sales. Everywhere she went, she got the same response--people loved it. That positive customer feedback and consistent testing gave her the confidence to go all in. Kelley has always welcomed customer feedback and understands that customers will tell you whether or not they like something. She advises entrepreneurs to not be stubborn with their own thought process and instead listen to the people who are going to purchase the product and consider how you will get them to tell more people about it. Kelley wasn't a business expert when she decided to go all in on her business. With a background in teaching, Kelley is a self-taught entrepreneur who learned from networking groups, online classes, extensive research, and trial and error. She taught herself social media marketing and invested some of the earliest sales of her product right back into her learning through online courses. But some of Kelley's most powerful learning and on-the-job training came from listening to customers. Even as she was repeatedly told no by potential investors, Kelley held strong to the overwhelmingly positive customer feedback and knew her product was a winner. Her efforts paid off as Bug Bite Thing saw tremendous growth and she made it to the Holy Grail for entrepreneurs—Shark Tank—where she had competing offers from all five Sharks. Knowing when to go all in is different for each entrepreneur. But as Kelley knows, researching and testing the concept and learning from customers can provide powerful insights into the demand and potential for a product. We frequently get asked things like: What do we use for courses and email marketing? What platform do we use to find people to join our team? What tools do we use for project and task management? Where do we host and publish podcasts and how do we transcribe them? And More.  Well, we just put together the Entrepreneurs' Online Business Toolkit PDF which will give you a complete breakdown of the tools we use to run our 7-figure businesses and how we use them.
