In this episode of "The Complete Advisor," host Dennis Mattern is joined by two distinguished guests: Kelly Carter, CEO of Beacon Retirement Planning Group, and Scott Bushkie, Managing Partner and Founder of Cornerstone Business Services. Together, they delve into the vital yet often overlooked topic of business exit strategies, a crucial area where most business owners' net worth is deeply intertwined yet significantly under-planned.Kelly and Scott highlight the staggering reality that 80-90% of a business owner's financial net worth is typically tied up in their business. Yet, shockingly, only a fraction of businesses successfully sell when taken to market. They discuss the dire consequences of not having an exit strategy, emphasizing the five Ds (Death, Divorce, Disability, Distress, and Disagreement) that can force an exit unexpectedly.Through their expert lens, they shed light on the critical importance of early planning and the introduction of structured financial programs and tools aimed at preventing the substantial loss of business value. They explore the intersections of financial planning, market realities, and personal goals, presenting their collaborative approach as a beacon for business owners navigating the complex process of selling their business. The conversation also covers the unique CapEx program, a cornerstone offering designed to empower financial advisors, CPAs, and attorneys in guiding their clients through successful business exits. Furthermore, they touch upon the psychological and financial impacts of selling a business, emphasizing the necessity of tailored advice and strategic planning.Whether you're a business owner, financial advisor, CPA, or just interested in the intricacies of business transitions, this episode offers invaluable insights into turning potential financial despair into opportunity and success. Welcome back to Small Business Sales & Strategy Podcast! One of the biggest mistakes that I see business owners and sales reps make is going into meetings or calls unprepared. You want to walk away from your sales calls with more information and ideas on how to move to the next steps, but you can't do that if you don't walk in prepared. In today's episode, you will learn how to prepare for your next sales call. You need product knowledge and customer knowledge and I break down both in this episode. Welcome back to Small Business Sales & Strategy podcast! I'm so glad you are joining me today! Today, I'm sharing the number one thing that I believe small business owner miss in sales conversations and speaking about their business. If you have listened to this podcast very long, you probably have an idea! I believe that biggest mistake that small business owners make is not asking enough questions! We don't really know our customers well enough because we don't continue asking questions, so in today's episode, I give you three ways that you can ask questions so that you continue solving problems and meeting people's needs: 1. Ask questions! Do market research to make sure that you are solving a problem. 2. Ask more questions! Get to know your customer's needs, where they came from, where they are now, and where they are going. Tap into emotions and feelings about their journey. 3. Ask more questions! Continue the conversation when they become your customer so that they remain loyal to you and your brand. If you've know me for any length of time, you know that I teach that asking (more) questions is essential to sales success! That's because it is - your customers want to be known by you. They want to know that you care. That's how you build brand loyalty. Welcome to the 20th Episode of Small Business Sales & Strategy Podcast! I cannot believe we are at 20 episodes already!!! Time flies when you are having fun! Today's episode is about delegation in small business. In our small business, we have been evaluating our daily, weekly and monthly tasks, and where we can do a better job. Some of the discussion has been centered around delegating the tasks that don't need to be done by us as owners, and I was excited to read a passage of scripture during my quiet time a few mornings ago! Acts 6:1-7 talks about how the 12 apostles knew they were called to spend time in prayer, spread the GOOD NEWS of Jesus and The Word of God so that the number of believers would continue to grow. They were getting complaints within the group of believers that people were unhappy with how food was being managed and distributed. So, instead of becoming distracted with these types of tasks, they came together and developed a plan to delegate so that they could stay doing the things that moved the needle in their "business" (their "business" was spreading God' message of hope and freedom in Jesus). So, they found 7 people that were wise and filled with the Holy Spirit to take over management and distribution of the food. They DELEGATED. So how do we decide what to delegate? Let me introduce you to Eisenhower's Matrix! There are four categories in Eisenhower's matrix that will help you decide what YOU need to do now, what needs scheduled, what you can DELEGATE, and what you can/should delete (my favorite category!!!). I explain how to determine what goes in each category and I also give some examples. I hope this episode sets you free to delegate in your business and personal life in whatever stage of business and life you are in! Welcome to Small Business Sales & Strategy podcast! I'm so happy you are here with me! In today's episode, I talk about "Choosing your hard" when it comes to your small business and your life. We all have hard things to do and hard things going on in our lives. For me, staying on track and keeping up with the so-called mundane day to day tasks are hard. It's also hard for me to choose to workout, one of the ways that I manage my mental health. So with these hard things, we have a choice to make - do the thing that seems hard or daunting and move the needle forward OR we can choose to avoid doing them and stay right where we are at. And I don't know about you, but I don't want to be in the same place that I am a year from now - I want to keep growing!!! We can choose our hard. I can choose my hard, and so can you! Marketplaces can help you do that.SEGMENT 2 with Mischa Zveginzov, starting at 15:15: How are you getting your business in front of customers? "Marketing" and "sales" are much loathed words and activities in the tiny service-providing business space. Most of us got into our work to help people out while practicing something we have a deep love for. Not to feel like we're shaking people down for money. That's totally fair! Except... if a business is not bringing in revenue, it's not a business (call back to building block #1...). So marketing and sales become essential, but we don't have to do them in ways that are either overwhelming or which just feel gross. We truly don't! In this episode I discuss the simplest definitions of marketing and sales for our purposes, and the simplest and most effective (and non-gross) ways to engage with them.

Hello! Welcome back to Small Business Sales & Strategy! In today's episode, we are talking about sales and marketing strategy and I'm on a little bit of a soap box. There is this misconception in business that we can slap up a website and/or open the doors to a business and the right people will just find you and show up to buy. Well, that is absolutely false. If you aren't talking about your business, you can't expect anyone to know about it. You certainly can't expect them to talk about it. So in this episode, I share 3 ways to get your business out there and noticed: 1. How to use Social Media to build trust, 2. How getting involved in your community can lead to business growth, and 3. How networking and relationship building can lead to personal and business growth. These 3 things have helped us grow month over month for over a year, and they will help you too. I'll say it again - if you aren't talking about your business, no one is talking about your business. So get out there and start the conversation! I'm praying for your business! This morning I headed to the ATM to deposit some money after taking my middle twin to an orthodontist appointment. I pulled up and wouldn't you know it, I could not for the life of me remember my pin number. I've used that number a zillion times, yet there was a giant blank space in my head for what the number should be. Does this happen to you too? (please say yes, I don't want the only one who has a garbage disposal in my mind just munching away on pertinent information.) The whole experience gave me empathy toward my clients. Almost everyone is UBER distracted right now. Between the news, social media, phone distractions, and even email - everyone is struggling for focus and especially downtime. This includes your audience. Add to that distraction, a group of potential customers who may not even be ready to solve their problem aka buy from you - it's no wonder your marketing is causing you headaches. This week's episode shares three proven ways for you to stay top of mind with your potential customers so that when they are ready to buy - they think of you and already trust you. Making the sales process seamless and easy. Dive into this week's jam-packed episode here. The most important part of getting traction from your marketing is having a marketing strategy. This is the exact reason I created the 5-Step Marketing Strategy Guide. Download your copy here to set up a plan for your marketing instead of wondering if something will work. If you've been tuning into the 2nd Act Entrepreneur Show for a bit, you know I'm slightly obsessed with a recent sales study I came across which revealed that only 3 percent of people are actually ready to buy when they come across a brand (like yours). Meaning 97% of people need more interaction and knowledge before making a purchasing decision. But most entrepreneurs give up after only 1-2 contact points (including emails). That means 97% of possible sales are being left on the table before they ever have the chance to get off the ground. Let's stop that stat - well stat! Let's dive into three proven ways to stay top of mind even in today's busy world: #1 - My personal favorite is email marketing. But even with a powerful tool like email marketing, oftentimes things go askew. Here are some things to avoid like the plague. Avoid only emailing your list when you have something to sell Remember to pitch your offer. Sometimes people get so caught up in relationship building they never give someone a way to buy or work with them. Show up consistently so that people remember who you are and how you can help them. Avoid writing boring templated emails or plagiarizing someone else's writing. They aren't engaging, won't get read and it's just bad juju. For more details tune in to this week's show. #2 - Effectively use social media. First, and foremost - show up consistently on the right social platform. Lack of consistency will kill your vibe Figure out where your audience is hanging out. More details on this in the episode. Yes, you will have to do the work. You will have to create engaging content and no there is no magic marketing pill that will build your audience for you. Be sure that you are connecting the dots to move people off social media sooner than later because it's critical to move people to purchase #3 - Get in front of your people using the media Figure out where your people go find information on solving their problem and show up there. Examples given in the episode include: Television Interviews Publication Articles Podcasts Video Shows Speaking at events That's a wrap for this week. Don't forget to grab the 5-Step Marketing Strategy Guide. This guide is your ally in easily creating a plan for your marketing. Helping you avoid frustration, manic posting on social and ultimately saves you time and money on marketing that doesn't work. Download your copy here and I just bet you will get your marketing plan set up this afternoon. Until next week, be well, stay safe and take care! ~Alisa

To be an entrepreneur is to be constantly adapting. In a world where the market is ever-changing, it's important to be able to shift, to refocus and rebrand… to be ready for whatever is coming next. Iva Pawling, the Founder & CEO of Richer Poorer, a California-based inner wear company with a cult following, knows a thing or two about having to think on the fly. “It was completely the opposite of what we expected, and they ended up filing for bankruptcy within thirteen months of acquiring us,” Pawling said of Richer Poorer's ill-fated acquisition. “It was just insane. It really taught me to always have a Plan B. Like… if things don't go how you plan, how are you handling it?” So how did she handle it? How did Richer Poorer survive huge obstacles like a failed acquisition, over-complicated marketing tactics, and a major supply-chain stallout? Find out on this episode of The Journey. Main Takeaways:Sometimes, it's okay to not run on pure passion: The old saying goes something like this: “Motivation is for amateurs, discipline is for professionals.” There might come a time when a brilliant opportunity presents itself, but it's not something that completely lights your fire. It's not your dream. There are times when you might need to look at the bigger picture and think long-term. It might not be the most exciting thing, but maybe it's the right next step. Successful careers take both passion and smart moves done at the right time. Pay if forward: When Iva was just starting out, she reached out to a lot of her contacts, all of whom were eager to point her in the right direction. That's because, she explained, that all entrepreneurs have had someone do the same for them when they were just starting out. The business world can be very cutthroat, but it can also be full of camaraderie. Keep an eye out for those moments when you can help someone… it will come back to you, eventually. Vulnerability can be a strength: Every business will face curveballs and moments of uncertainty. Good leaders will turn to their team and ask for help with blind spots instead of pretending to have all the answers. By being vulnerable, you invite your team to find the best solution. ---This season of the Journey is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by UPS. Today on the podcast we are reairing episode 63 of the podcast where my friend, and sales tax expert, Amy Monroe shares the five steps to manage small business sales taxes. 1. Where do you need to collect tax (do I have nexus)? This can depend on the size of your business and the services/goods you sell. You will need to know if you need a seller's permit. 2. How you register for a seller's permit You will also need to search if there may be a secretary of state requirement. 3. What are the sales tax rates and how do you collect them? Often the sales tax rate is based on the location of the buyer. You need to make sure you are also collecting any additional local, county, city and district taxes. 4. Know and manage taxability and exemptions If you provide goods and services it's important to know what is and isn't subject to sales tax and when/if they need to be bundled together or specifically stated. The exemptions may be more nuanced than you need. 5. Deadlines and filing obligations Accounting is important. When you document a transaction separate out revenue and sales taxes. Most sales tax returns for most industries it's gross revenue minus any deductions or exemptions equals your taxable revenue. Factor in the applicable tax rate and that's how much you owe Get in touch with our guest Amy Monroe, Sales Tax Guru Follow Amy on Instagram at @iamamymonroe www.instagram.com/iamamymonroe/
