Luma Brighter Learning, led by Dr. Gina Anderson (Ed.D.), offers a tailored LMS with eNugget® microlearning to combat the isolation and mental health issues prevalent in trucking. Alarming life expectancy figures underscore the severe health impacts of the profession, necessitating urgent industry-wide changes and effective solutions. Luma's focus on safety and well-being directly addresses this. A Fresh Story, season 3, episode 18 We had the chance to talk to CEO, and working mom, Kelley Higney! Kelley is brilliant, lovely, and so passionate about changing the world with her product, Bug Bite Thing. We chatted with Kelley about her career change, making fresh starts, being a working mom, becoming a CEO, and of course…going on Shark Tank! Kelley Higney is the founder and CEO of Bug Bite Thing, the leader in providing consumers with chemical-free first aid products, including its insect bite relief suction tool which is Amazon's #1 seller for insect bite relief with nearly 90,000 reviews and its tick remover tweezer tool approved for both people and pets that launched this summer. Determination to find a natural alternative to the available remedies on the market that would alleviate her six-month-old daughter's constantly suffering from mosquito bites, led to her discovery of an unfamiliar product that uses suction to remove the irritant. Then, after securing exclusive distribution rights to the product, she branded it Bug Bite Thing and has since been a “Mom on a Mission,” educating the world on the most effective, chemical-free solution for insect bite relief. The company gained national recognition in October 2019 when Kelley and her mother, Ellen McAlister, appeared on ABC's hit show, ‘Shark Tank.' All the Sharks were biting with offers to invest in the business, but it was Lori Greiner's ‘Golden Ticket' offer that secured the partnership. In April 2021, Kelley and her mother returned to ‘Shark Tank.' This time, they shared details on the company's transformation into a multi-million dollar enterprise following their first appearance on the show. Kelley is a member of the Fast Company Executive Board and Forbes Business Council and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Gold Stevie Award for ‘Female Executive of the Year' by the 2022 Stevie Awards for Women in Business and named a “Top Mamaprenistas” by the 2022 Entreprenista 100. She is active within the South Florida community where she resides and teaches teens through Bug Bite Thing's Entrepreneurship in Action Program in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County. She lives in Port St. Lucie with her husband and two daughters. Learn more about Kelley and Bug Bite Thing on their website, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok and of course, Amazon.

According to a report by Yale University, a person's hair and hairstyle impact not only our self-image but also the impression of others about us. Throughout the decades, society and media have inculcated the image of "perfect hair" as free-flowing, shiny, and tangle-free. However, this is definitely a false presentation of the realities of hair. The American Hair Research Society explains that an array of hair disorders and issues plague the nation, including hair loss (such as autoimmune alopecia areata and stress-derived telogen effluvium) and hair shaft defects (fragile hair, frizziness, coarseness, split ends). We are joined today by JuE Wong, the CEO and President of OLAPLEX since 2020, a global senior executive, and a transformative beauty industry leader. Ray is a second-generation direct-sales entrepreneur. He followed his parents' example of combining strong family values with the fervent belief that anyone can achieve their dreams through hard work and determination. With a degree in International Business, Ray co-founded ALCORA GROUP and now guides MONAT's success as CEO. As Co-Founder and CEO of MONAT Global, Ray has led MONAT from humble beginnings in a small Miami, FL warehouse to a multi-million-dollar global beauty brand in just a few short years. A native of Venezuela, Ray immigrated to the United States with his wife Carolina in 2000 with only $800 in his pocket. Following stints at Sears and as a door-to-door salesman, Ray founded Alcora Corporation, which would later become the parent company of his most successful venture to date: MONAT. A second-generation direct sales entrepreneur, Ray found his love for the industry at a young age after seeing the impact it had on his family. He found inspiration for MONAT when he recognized a lack of awareness that your hair ages and that scalp care is just as important as skincare. As he dug into the multi-billion-dollar haircare industry, he made two key discoveries. There were no direct selling companies focused on haircare as their signature product line; and there were no haircare products focused on healthy aging. Ray saw an opportunity to disrupt both the beauty and the direct selling industries in a major way, and in 2014, he officially launched MONAT as a direct selling, healthy-aging haircare company – the first of its kind. Under his leadership, MONAT has grown at a lightening pace, expanding into multiple international markets and, in 2019, launching a second product category: MONAT Skincare. With Ray at the helm, MONAT has grown into a global beauty brand with hundreds of millions in annual revenue, more than 400 corporate employees, and an independent sales force, known as Market Partners, of over 200,000. The company has also revolutionized the direct selling model, introducing the social selling model that brings the direct sales model of yesteryear into the 21st century. During his tenure, MONAT has accomplished a number of key strategic initiatives, including the launch of MONAT Gratitude, the company's philanthropic initiative focused on impacting families, children and education, and encouraging Market Partners to do the same in their communities. Ray has received a number of awards and recognitions including a Gold Stevie Award for Entrepreneur of the Year in 2019 and a spot on South Florida Business Journal's List of Power Leaders for 2020. He earned a degree in International Business from Florida International University.

Subscribe to Modern Selling on the App of Your Choice! The COVID-19 outbreak has many sales leaders scrambling to create or find virtual sales training that works. In one sense, that’s entirely understandable. As the virus spreads, more and more sales training companies are having to cancel scheduled training events and companies are requiring their sales teams to work from home. Moving forward, methods of training that do not require in-person attendance are needed. But in another sense, I’m left shaking my head. This is 2020—it seems to me that most companies should have already had some form of virtual sales training in place. We at Vengreso have already created and implemented our own virtual instructor-led sales training program, focused on helping those who prospect via social media to do it in a modern and effective way. We’ve seen incredible results from what we’ve created because we’ve integrated neuroscience and modern learning principles into our curriculum. On this episode, my guest Kurt Shaver (one of my co-founders at Vengreso) helps me unpack the principles that go into a powerful virtual sales training course to help you equip your sales team no matter the circumstances. This episode is sponsored by XANT, the enterprise leader in sales engagement. Xant has authored the Definitive Guide to Sales Cadence. Get your copy at www.SalesCadenceGuide.com Hands-Down, Virtual Sales Training Is More Effective Than In-Person Events Recent studies diving into the effectiveness of group training events reveal details that are both alarming and vitally important when developing any kind of training. A study by Gartner reveals that as a result of live group training events, participants lose 70% of what they’ve learned within six days and 87% within six weeks. That’s a very poor ROI in my book. Comparatively, the Harvard Business Review reports the opposite impact of virtual sales training: through virtual means of training, 80% of the information is retained after 60 days when a technique known as “spacing” is utilized. Interestingly, the utilization of spacing is ONLY possible in an online training environment. We’ll unpack what spacing is in a moment, but to our point here—the difference between in-person group training and online/virtual training for your sales team could be significant when it comes to retention and effectiveness. If You Intend To Build Your Own Digital Sales Training, Take It Seriously During our conversation on this episode of #ModernSelling, Kurt makes a great point by referring to the effort and time required to learn a language. You don’t simply cram to learn the grammar and vocabulary of a foreign language and suddenly become fluent. It takes time—and that's time spent while immersed in the practice and use of the language. That's because practice makes perfect. Kurt’s point? The same is true for the creation and development of your digital sales training materials. You must ensure that what you’re creating will contain the right concepts and information AND be effective. For instance, our program took over 10,000 combined man-hours to compile, record, refine, and publish. The results - we received the Gold Stevie Award in 2020 for the best sales training program for the second consecutive year. So, don’t think you can slap something together quickly or easily. It requires funds and personnel to tackle a training project of this magnitude. If You're Going To Invest In Building Your Own Virtual Training, Do This! If you’re willing to put in the 10,000+ hours and financial resources to build a truly effective virtual sales training course for your team, good for you! But you’ll need to ensure effectiveness. How do you do that? Certainly not with a powerpoint presentation and droning narration. In this episode we cover the following seven science-backed components to an effective online training. Include Gamification Implement Chunking and Spacing Promote Deliberate Practice Integrate plenty of Repetition into your course Use the power of Video to keep students engaged Include periodic exercises to Test Knowledge Supplement everything with Personal Coaching (group or one on one) Kurt and I define all of these in our conversation and explain why we prefer a group coaching approach to a one-on-one coaching approach, so be sure you listen! If You Can’t Build Your Own Online Sales Training, What Alternatives Exist? You may feel like you have neither the expertise nor the interest in investing in the creation of your own virtual sales training. That’s OK, there is no need to reinvent that wheel, especially if you’re only looking for a short-term solution while employees are working from home because of the restrictions forced by COVID-19. Our program—Selling with LinkedIn® —is one example of the types of resources that are available. You'll find others available online as well. But, be sure you're getting a course that's designed with those seven principles of effective learning. Our course includes them by design. Whatever you decide, ensure that your training dollars are being invested wisely. Listen to learn more about what we recommend and share the show with a colleague who is sitting at home trying to sell in the new normal! Ande has made it her mission to break down the emotional, behavioral and societal barriers that stand between women and strong financial foundations. Early in her more than 25 year career she rejected traditional planning methods that didn’t account for how emotions factor into financial decision making. Wanting to do things differently, she developed an expertise in behavioral finance. In the years to follow, she saw again and again that conventional wisdom about women and money was flawed: It’s not women’s finances that determine their self-worth. It’s women’s sense of self-worth that determines their finances. And like that, a new philosophy was born. In late 2018, Ande launched myWorth, a media community that’s inspiring a financial awakening among women who are eager to take control of their financial journeys. She built myWorth on two core beliefs: Traditional approaches to speaking to women about money are broken. And conversations about money must align directly with women’s personal values and goals. Ande rose to the top of the primarily male-dominated insurance world as the former head of a multi-million-dollar fintech company and VP at Penn Mutual. She is now widely recognized as a driving force in the financial community, holding multiple finance and insurance designations including a CFP®, CLU, ChFC, RICP, BFATM and ChSNC. She regularly appears on top national media outlets to speak about topics at the intersection of women and finance And she has been named one of the “Top 100 in Finance” in 2019 and “Top 50 Women of 2019” by Top 100 Magazine, as well as one of Bristol’s “Who’s Who Among Distinguished Professionals and Executives.” In addition, she is a Gold Stevie Award winner for Female Executive of the Year (Consumer Services 10 employees or less) for 2019. Her book Financially Free: 11 Conversations To Have With Yourself About Life, Money, And Worth was released on March 10, 2020. Ande lives in New York and is married with two children. Nadine dropped in to talk to Jess about some of the biggest misconceptions people have about beauty and wellness. “Building your personal brand is a responsibility. Yes, it's about defining your message and building a platform, but the deeper question you have to ask yourself is why? What does your message stand for?” - Jessica Zweig When you’re an entrepreneur, you have to spend a lot of time cultivating your brand identity on social media in order to reach new audiences. But with serious issues like war, hunger, and inequities in education, you may start to feel like branding is just a vanity project. On this week’s episode of The Simply Be Podcast, Jessica is here to remind you that so long as you know what you and your message stand for, building your platform isn’t egotistical, it’s just work. After a conversation with an investor that left a bad taste in her mouth, Jessica realized that there are a lot of myths around the egos of entrepreneurs and media personalities. A recent education protest cemented her belief that it’s not frivolous to work on your brand – all brands and businesses offer a solution to a problem in their corner of the universe. As President, Alkire leads the continued integration of Premier’s clinical, financial, supply chain and operational performance improvement offerings helping member hospitals and health systems provide higher quality care at a better cost. These performance improvement offerings access Premier’s comparative database, one of the nation’s largest outcomes databases. Alkire also led Premier’s efforts to address public health and safety issues from the nationwide drug shortage problem, testifying before the U.S. House of Representatives regarding Premier research on shortages and gray market price gouging. This work contributed to the president and Congress taking action to investigate and correct the problem, resulting in two pieces of bipartisan legislation. Prior to serving as President, Alkire was president of Premier Purchasing Partners, which offers group purchasing, supply chain and resource utilization services to hospitals and health systems. Premier remains among the top group purchasing organizations in the industry as the value of supplies purchased through its contracts has increased to more than $56 billion. Before joining Premier, he served in a number of leadership roles at Cap Gemini, including North American responsibilities for supply chain and high-tech manufacturing. Alkire graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science from Indiana State University and an MBA from Indiana University. Resources Premier, Inc. Advocacy @ Premier Premier, Inc. and 10 Hospitals Launch Initiative to Improve Maternal and Infant Health (Press Release, July 11, 2019) HEADLINES: The FTC fines Facebook $5 billion—many say it’s not enough; Trump goes on a racist tirade on Twitter; and Michael Alkire is my guest. News Roundup FTC fines Facebook $5 billion The Federal Trade Commission has fined Facebook some $5 billion with many saying it’s a slap on the wrist. One commentator on Twitter called it a parking ticket, although it was a record fine. But the New York Times notes that the fine concludes just one of several investigations currently pending around the world. Facebook’s revenue last year was $56 billion. Brian Stelter on Trumps racist tweets You already know about Trump’s racist tweets over the weekend in which he told democratic, progressive Congresswomen of color, obviously including Representative Ilhan Omar, who fled to the U.S. from Somalia, to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came”. Of course the other Congresswomen to whom he was clearly referring, including New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, were born in the U.S. But Brian Stelter from CNN pointed out something interesting – media outlets like Fox News are avoiding calling the president’s tweets racist, and instead relying on third-party commentators to do that. Twitter even said that the president’s tweets didn’t violate its policies. Twitter though is in a difficult predicament since it’s currently under fire by Trump, along with several other tech companies, for allegedly having an anti-conservative bias. Social Media Summit The Trump administration held a social media summit with conservative content creators and politicians last week. The president told those in attendance that he would invite tech companies to the White House to explain their alleged anti-conservative bias. But the president didn’t provide any evidence. Huawei plans massive U.S. layoffs The Wall Street Journal reports that Huawei, the China-based company that’s been besieged by the Trump administration for allegedly sharing the confidential and sensitive information of U.S. companies with the Chinese government, will be laying off as many as 850 people in the U.S. The U.S. Commerce Department has blacklisted Huawei, which Huawei estimates will cost it some $30 billion. U.S. Army to test armed, robotic vehicles Andrew Liptak reported in the Verge that the U.S. government is planning to test armed, robotic vehicles beginning next year. The Army will conduct the live-fire tests in Colorado and Europe. The vehicles will be remote controlled. First quantum entanglement photograph Scientists at the University of Glasglow photographed, for the very first time, two photons interacting and sharing physical states for a brief moment. What does it mean? Well the photograph will advance the field of quantum mechanics because it proves that photons physically interact with one another—something that was theoretical before. Also, the process of taking the photograph was very involved, creating a model that scientists can use to capture other scientific phenomena that are difficult to observe. Chris Lewis elevated to President & CEO of Public Knowledge Christopher Lewis, a seven-year veteran of progressive tech policy think tank and advocacy group Public Knowledge, has succeeded Gene Kimmelman as President & CEO. Previously, Chris was a staffer in the late Ted Kennedy’s office. This episode with Gurman Hundal, co-founder of MiQ, is a bit shorter and has some audio challenges at the beginning (apologies, it gets better throughout the episode) but the content is a must listen for any entrepreneur. Gurman gives advice on building a successful start-up culture, about empowering people and having trust; working hard, yet having a work life balance and being content, and happy. An episode close to my heart as I met both Gurman and his co-founder Lee in 2010. They have made it in our industry and they are not done yet! I am delighted that Gurman made some time in his busy diary to meet and speak with me about his journey. He launched the now global company MiQ in London with partner Lee Puri after recognising a clear unaddressed need for data-driven insight in an otherwise thriving ad-tech economy. Seeing both opportunity and demand for more transparent models in real-time advertising, MiQ was born and has maintained a 95% employee retention rate. I’d love to know the secret of that culture! In 2017, Gurman won a Gold Stevie® Award in the Executive of the Year in the Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations category. I am sure this is just one of many.
Brett Beveridge is a serial entrepreneur who thrives on building businesses from the ground up and prides himself on being at the forefront of technology. Since founding the Revenue Optimization Companies (T-ROC), the CEO has helped propel the parent company of four brands and an international division to become a leader in the wireless, electronics, software and retail industries, assisting many big-box retailers and Fortune 500 companies such as Apple, Sprint, AT&T, Walmart, Comcast and many more. Beveridge believes in combining people and technology to help companies reduce costs and increase sales, and always, exceeding customer’s expectations. Beveridge learned the value of hard work from a young age, performing various jobs from waiting tables to even working in a papaya field. At just 23 years old, the University of Miami graduate started selling cell phones out of a van with a college friend, and impressively turned that bootstrap company into Let’s Talk, the largest independent mobile wireless retailer in the country with around 300 stores. He would eventually take that company public and sell it to Nextel. Beveridge would continue to harness his entrepreneurial spirit, raising millions from national venture capital firms like Goldman Sachs, to co-found LetsTalk.com, which is one of the largest online e-tailers of wireless products and services. Over the last 20 years, Beveridge has successfully founded more than 10 companies and used his experience to help national wireless and technology companies with reorganization, profit turnarounds, mergers and acquisitions, and IPOs. As a top leader in his field, Beveridge is the incoming chair of the Consumer Technology Association, which meets throughout the year to discuss critical issues facing the industry and devise solutions. He is also a current member and past chair of The Young Presidents Organization (YPO) of Miami, as well as The Strategic Forum, where involvement allows him to foster long-term personal and business relationships and offer ideas and strategies to other business leaders in various fields. In 2017, Beveridge was announced the winner of Ernst & Young’s prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Florida, and in 2018 he won a Gold Stevie® Award in the Entrepreneur of the Year - Retail category for the 16th Annual American Business Awards®. Helping others succeed translates from Beveridge’s professional life to his personal life. For the last decade, he’s been heavily involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters Miami, helping to match at-risk kids with dedicated mentors. He is a past chairman and is currently on the foundation board, where he devotes his time to raising money and awareness of the charity. Beveridge also proudly serves on the Orange Bowl Committee with a focus on helping underprivileged youths and rebuilding distressed communities. The University of Miami alum is on the university’s President’s Council, where he’s mentored college students in the past. His personal goal is to help shape young lives and offer them a better future. In his spare time, you can find Beveridge on the water with his wife and three daughters, indulging in boating, fishing or snorkeling. The longtime Coral Gables resident enjoys walking to breakfast on the weekends and sampling new restaurants and experiences around South Florida.

What are some ways that you can show your customers, and your employees, that you are truly customer focused? Shep Hyken interviews Megan Singh, Project Management Director at Squaremouth, a four-time Gold Stevie Award winner for Customer Service Department of the Year, to get ideas that you can implement in your organization. First Up: Shep Hyken begins his opening comments by asking, how easy are you to do business with? Part of that easiness is how you guarantee what you sell. You want to create confidence and trust, because those feelings will convert to customer loyalty. The old saying is, “People want to do business with people they know, like and trust.” The knowing and liking is easy. The trust part is hard. It comes from predictable and consistent experiences. And, it doesn’t hurt to guarantee your products and services, either! Featured Interview: Shep begins his interview with Megan Singh by asking about Squaremouth’s guarantee, known as the Zero Complaint Guarantee. Megan explains that Squaremouth sells travel insurance policies through their comparison website. So, anything through Squaremouth is actually another company’s insurance policy. Squaremouth wants their customers to feel comfortable with the company they have chosen, so they ask all the insurance companies they represent to comply with their Zero Complaint Guarantee. Squaremouth promises every customer that if they have any complaint at all about their claim, Squaremouth will get involved and mediate with the provider on the customer’s behalf. As a result, this policy gives their customers confidence in Squaremouth’s offerings, and it gives Squaremouth a good working relationship with their providers to make sure that all claims are mediated fairly. In addition to their customer-focused guarantee, Megan attributes much of the company’s success to their amazing employee culture, from the various employee perks like unlimited vacation time and a boat for employee happy hour cruises, to having every employee spend time once a week directly interacting with customers. For Squaremouth to be totally customer-focused, everyone in the organization must feel connected to the customer. Squaremouth aims to exceed everyone’s expectations – even their employees! Top Takeaways: • Develop a customer service mantra, credo or vision for your company. Squaremouth’s credo is “We want to be the best place for our employees to work and the best place for our customers to buy products. Period.” • To be one of the best places to buy from, you also need to be one of the best places to work. Squaremouth treats their employees the way they want to them to treat their customers. Maybe even a bit better. • To have all employees understand the customers’ needs and wants Every employee in their St. Petersburg headquarters (even the CEO) at some time during the week, works in customer service, communicating directly with the customer. • ‘Downsell’ the customer. Many of Squaremouth’s customers are shocked by this policy, but Squaremouth will not sell the customer more coverage than they need. As a matter of fact, they often suggest less expensive policies. The least expensive policy can often be the best one. About: Megan Singh is the Project Management Director for Squaremouth, and like all members of the Squaremouth team, Megan remains close to the customer base by taking customer phone calls on a weekly basis.
