Craig Mack's “Flava In Ya Ear” was the first single released by Bad Boy Records in 1994. Despite the track's success, his album was overshadowed by the massive hype behind labelmate Notorious B.I.G.'s debut record which was released only 7 days later. Mack was left in the shadows, but his story only gets crazier from there. We are joined by podcaster, rapper, and hip-hop fanatic Wordburglar to discuss why the late Craig Mack deserves more credit for his futuristic flow. Hit Me warms you up with the Calypso style songs composed by the late songwriter Irving Burgie.
338 - Irving Burgie Irving Burge was one of the greatest songwriters of our time and his songs will live forever. This interview was recorded and broadcast on the radio in 2008. Born July 28, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, Burgie passed away on November 29, 2019 in Queens, New York. Irving Burgie, or as he was sometimes known Lord Burgess, wrote many classic songs of the Caribbean such as Day-O, Jamaica Farewell. Burgie composed some 34 songs for the Legendary Harry Belafonte including 8 of the 11 songs on Belafonte's classic Calypso album. From 1956 to 1957, "Calypso" was the first album of any kind to sell one Million copies. He also wrote songs for the Kingston Trio during the group's heyday as well as lyrics of the National Anthem of Barbados. His songs have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Everyone has heard Irving Burgie's music...at concerts and sporting events all over the world, on the radio and in movies. His songs have been recorded by too many artists to even name.
Hey movie likers! We’re back! Episode 6 contains our rewatch of "THE LAST STARFIGHTER" as Burgie is joined by radio host and 2nd to last Starfighter, Pete Morey for a highly entertaining unpacking of this 1984 cult-classic. Enjoy!!! / Follow us on Instagram @theWordburglar / Twitter @wordburglar & www.wordburglar.com
Reformer. Activist. “The Red Bishop”. “A Most Meddlesome Priest”. These are just some of the ways that Bishop Ernest Burgmann came to be known in Australia. Passionate and outspoken about social justice and civil rights, his activism strove to awaken Australia from its conservative complacency. In the words of Peter Hempenstall, who published a book on Burgmann in 1993, "his actions had a profound and far-reaching impact on Australians well beyond the boundaries of his diocese. Burgmann’s words and actions hold a promise of extraordinary relevance to Australian society today." St Mark's National Theological Centre, together with the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the death of Bishop Ernest Henry Burgmann — controversial reformer, social justice activist, teacher, writer, Anglican bishop — on 17 May 2017. The Rt Rev’d Professor Stephen Pickard gave a talk aptly titled, “That Meddlesome God: A Christian Future for the Church" where he spoke passionately about Burgie's heart for social justice, his advocacy for the downtrodden, and how the church today can learn from his zeal for public theology. After serving in World War II, Irving Burgie attended Juilliard where he studied classical voice. He eventually fell in love with folk music, and landed a steady gig as a Calypso singer at a Caribbean-themed Chicago nightclub in the early 1950s. Returning to New York, he became known as Lord Burgess on the Greenwich Village folk scene. He contributed eight songs to Harry Belafonte’s Calypso album in 1956, which became the first million selling LP in any genre, and spent an astounding 31 weeks at #1 on the Billboard pop chart. Burgie went on to write the majority of Belafonte’s hit albums Belafonte Sings of the Caribbean in 1957 and Jump Up Calypso in 1961. In total, he wrote more than thirty songs for Belafonte, including the hit singles “Jamaica Farewell,” “Day-O,” “Don’t Ever Love Me,” “Cocoanut Woman,” and “Island in the Sun.” Thanks to his strong reputation for popularizing island music, Burgie wrote the National Anthem of Barbados in 1966. In addition to Harry Belafonte, other artists who’ve tapped the Irving Burgie catalog include Sam Cooke, Julio Iglesias, Taj Mahal, The Kinks, Jimmy Buffett, Marty Robbins, Don Williams, Arlo Guthrie, The Righteous Brothers, Tom Rush, Carly Simon, Chubby Checker, and Patti Page. “Day-O” continues to live on, and, in more recent years, has been sampled by Jason Derulo in “I Don’t Wanna Go Home," and by Lil’ Wayne in “Six Foot, Seven Foot.” Burgie was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007.
Episode 20 with special guest RACHELLE GOGUEN! This weekend Burgie tackles all of the issues with comic book blogger and podcaster Rachelle Goguen from LIVING BETWEEN WEDNESDAYS! What comics do they both love? What can't they stand? What problems do comics publishers need to fix and who is one of the greatest comics characters of the last 20 years?
