You’ll hear about how she got into dice-making, what she learned, and all the interesting mistakes along the way. You might think raking in millions of dollars in sales is great. But what happens when you have to then follow through? How do you deal with such massive demand? And what other pitfalls do you have to look forward to? Instant success comes with a responsibility. When you hear that someone is an “overnight success”, rarely did it happen overnight. But our guest in this episode is kind of the exception. Kind of. Karen Wang is the founder of Dispel Dice. A luxury dice-making business that was Kickstarted into existence. Over the course of her 30 day campaign, she raised over $2 million. All for her stunning, beautiful, and bespoke dice. And that first $1 million, happened on day one. If your jaw isn’t on the floor, then please re-read that last paragraph. Because that kind of support for a debut Kickstarter campaign is unheard of. But the path leading up to that fateful launch was no walk in the park. The same morning Karen pulled in her first million from Kickstarter, was the same morning her bank called to say that she had overdrawn her account. In this two part episode Karen walks us through the windy, bump-ridden road she took to build the incredible business she runs today. In part 1, we get to know the person behind the dice. How she went from feeling unfulfilled, unhappy, and dropping out of art school to finding her calling through a friendly game of Dungeons & Dragons. Learn more about your ad choices. Happy New Year! We're ringing in the new year with a sequel! Back in August 2020 we chatted with Karen and Janet about Face/Off and Con Air and all the Cagey Cageness of the one and only Nicolas Cage and the "Summer of Cage." This month, we're talking about Neil LaBute's less than stellar remake of The Wicker Man and Jon Turtletaub's ode to the puzzling genius of the Founding Fathers, National Treasure. What connects these two movies beyond being Nicolas Cage mid 2000s paychecks? Cults and Secret Societies! (Is there a difference? You tell us!) One is about a cult of women on an island in the Pacific Northwest. The other centers on secret societies like the Free Masons and has a certain culty devotion to the legends of the Found Fathers of the United States. Dr. Karen Wang from the Collaborative for Health and The Environment and Because Health, and Amy King from GoodWork US, join Healthy Living Healthy Planet to speak about healthy homes, workspaces and the built environment. As we shelter in place and spend even more time indoors Dr. Wang explains that the average person spends nearly 90% of their time indoors on a regular basis. In our current state, it’s nearly 100% for many. Not only do we spend our time indoors, we bring our comforts inside as well, from furniture, to toys and electronics. Our buildings, furnishings and entertainment materials impact our built environment and contribute to serious pollution and toxic leaching. From flame retardant furniture to lead paint, the list goes on. Dr. Wang shares her personal experience making her home healthy and the journey of researching to truly find out what is in our products and building materials. While we may not all be able to build our homes from scratch, we can make better choices in our products, choose better pots and pans, glass and stainless steal food storage, and body safe cleaning products (beware of fragranced cleaning products). Amy King speaks about healthy workplaces. Co-working spaces are shared work places for entrepreneurs. GoodWork is a green building co-working space, rehabilitated from a vacant 1950’s two floor warehouse. Recycling buildings is not often done, especially in Texas, but Amy and her business partner saw the potential and revitalized their co-working building with WELL and LEED building. GoodWork’s rehabilitation has helped to inspire the rest of the built environment in the neighborhood to come back to life. Amy explains “sick building syndrome” and her experience working in a sick building - marked by old mechanical systems, old air filters, toxic carpets and un-opening windows, resulting in the well-known 3 PM headache. But there is hope, businesses and their employees can make change, by advocating for their health, and pursuing local green building rating systems to access their workspaces and make change. Building’s are one of the top three offenders in climate change, our built environment, natural environment and human health are all connected. Karen Wang is not getting a second chance from the Federal Liberal Party. It has swiftly rejected her call to be reinstated as the party candidate in the upcoming Burnaby South byelection. Wang dropped out of the race yesterday after making online comments that singled out the ethnicity of NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh. She's now asking for a second chance - but her plea has been rejected by the federal Liberals. And she may end up running as an independent. Any moment now she's expected to hold a press conference. Never a dull day in BC politics… Yesterday, Karen Wang announced she was stepping down as the Liberals candidate in the federal byelection in Burnaby South. That was after the StarMetro Vancouver reported that she had published a social media post, appealing for votes because she was Chinese, while pointing out that Jagmeet Singh is “of Indian descent”. This morning we've learned that Karen Wang wants a second chance - but the Liberal Party says it is rejecting her request. Guest: Keith Baldrey Global BC Legislative Bureau Chief

The Liberal candidate running against NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in the Burnaby South byelection has bowed out of the race. Karen Wang says she made comments online that referenced Singh's cultural background and her choice of words wasn't well-considered and didn't reflect her intent. StarMetro Vancouver reported this morning that Wang wrote on Chinese social media platform WeChat that she was the "only'' Chinese candidate in the riding, rather than Singh, who she identified as "of Indian descent.'' She says she "sincerely'' apologizes to Singh and has deep respect for him as the leader of his party and for his public service.   Onus on homeowners to opt-out of speculation tax Starting later this week, homeowners in Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria, and other communities targeted by the speculation tax will be getting notices in the mail with “clear instructions” on how to apply for an exemption. Yes, that's right: the onus is on YOU to let the province know you're not a real estate speculator. Guest: Richard Zussman Global News Online Legislative Reporter

Today's episode is a unique one, recorded on site at Lillian H. Smith public library in Toronto where a book club called A Room of Your Own has gathered to talk with bestselling young adult fiction author Jennifer Niven, who is in town from Los Angeles. This book club, founded by Tanya Marie Lee, is just for teen girls from under-privileged communities. At each event members get in a room with the authors of the books they read, which are supplied ahead of the time by the authors and their publishers. Here they're talking about Niven's book All the Bright Places, which is being made into a film starring Elle Fanning. The book is the story of two Indiana teenagers who become companions after finding themselves at the same spot contemplating suicide. The book club is also joined by Dr. Karen Wang, a child and youth psychologist, who we talk to for some advice for parents on how to handle the difficult topics of teen suicide and mental illness. We also capture the stories of some of the students who share their own struggles in brave and inspiring ways. Show Notes Love our work? Please check out our Patreon Campaign!
