Con el sonido y al ritmo del Cuatro, instrumento folclórico venezonalo, el ganador de premio Grammy latino, Héctor Molina de C4 Trío nos comparte su historia.

Gerardo Guarache es uno de los periodistas venezolanos más respetados en la fuente cultural, cuyos textos han servido para contar el camino transitado por la música venezolana de vanguardia en los años recientes. Hace pocas semanas bautizó en Miami el libro "C4 Trío y la leyenda de los cuatros explosivos", dedicado a uno de los ensambles referencia en nuestro país. Son de su autoría, además, los textos "Yordano por Giordano", dedicado al cantautor ítalo-venezolano Giordano Di Marzo, "Una idea muy obscena", inspirado en la banda de rock "Zapato Tres", y "10 años de pura Guataca" acerca de la plataforma cultural que promueve la música nacional en una decena de ciudades del mundo. Graduado de Comunicador Social en la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, formó parte de la redacción del diario El Nacional en el área de Arte y Espectáculos. Sus trabajos han sido publicados en medios venezolanos e internacionales como el portal BBC Mundo, las revistas Ladosis y Marcapasos, la página de relatos de no ficción "La Vida de Nos", la revista Clímax y el portal Prodavinci. Nuestro invitado es además locutor, músico y cuenta con un Máster en Literatura Española e Hispanoamericana por la Universidad de Barcelona, España. Edward Ramírez forma parte de una generación de virtuosos ejecutantes del cuatro que han llevado a nuestro instrumento nacional hacia otra dimensión. Gracias a esta grey de talentos, reconocidos internacionalmente, la presencia de la música venezolana ha trascendido en los más diversos escenarios. Nuestro invitado forma parte de la agrupación C4 Trío desde su fundación y ha sido parte de proyectos musicales, como intérprete y compositor, de valor inconmensurable. Nacido en Caracas, en el Hospital Clínico de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, Edward se crió en los alrededores del Panteón Nacional, la Biblioteca Nacional y la Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad en la popular parroquia San José. Su historia tiene raíces fuera de nuestro país, un relato fascinante y mágico que le puso melodía a su llegada al mundo. Supo destacar, desde temprana edad, en el reconocido festival "La Siembra del Cuatro", en el que obtuvo el tercer lugar durante las ediciones de 2004 y 2005. Sus colegas le llaman "El Nerd del Cuatro" por su búsqueda constante de la evolución armónica del instrumento. Movido por esas inquietudes, presentó en 2012 un experimento personal: el cuatro con cuerdas de metal, que busca emular el sonido del arpa en el joropo tuyero. De esa misma iniciativa nació el disco "Cuatro, maraca y buche", realizado junto al cantante Rafael Pino, con el que mostró una visión más urbana y moderna del joropo tuyero. Así, también, alumbró "El Tuyero Ilustrado", un proyecto concebido para el estudio de este género. Su primer disco a título personal fue "Parroquia", hecho junto a Roberto Koch en el contrabajo y Carlos "Nené" Quintero en la percusión, que incluyó nueve temas especialmente compuestos para cuatro venezolano. Edward Ramírez ha grabado más de 50 producciones con las que ha recorrido el mundo. Como parte de C4 Trío, ha sido nominado en distintas ediciones del Grammy Latino, premio que obtuvo en 2019 gracias al álbum "Tiempo al tiempo", grabado por la agrupación junto al cantante nicaragüense Luis Enrique. Hoy en Día a Día, comenzamos conversando con el corresponsal en la Casa Blanca de The Washington Post, Tyler Pager, sobre escasez de combustible en el sureste de Estados Unidos: “El presidente Biden pidió calma y que no entren en pánico… Ha habido largas filas de gasolina para surtir gasolina, pero tanto el presidente Biden como Colonial han dicho que el suministro se va a normalizar por completo en los días venideros”, nos explicó. El abogado, profesor de derecho internacional y editor de Analitica.com, Emilio Figueredo, nos habló sobre el apoyo de la comunidad internacional al nuevo proceso de negociación en Venezuela: “Esta propuesta en realidad es articulada por actores de la comunidad internacional, como USA, Canadá y países de Europa”, dijo. Además, destacó que: “Hay tres cosas importantes en el planteamiento de Guaidó: habla de la justicia transicional, de garantías para ambas partes y de participación de los países internacionales” y comentó: “Se dice que en los próximos días se anunciarán los equipos negociadores por ambos lados”. Desde Miami nos atendió el Dr. Carlos Torres-Viera, médico infectólogo de la South Miami Hospital y Homestead Hospital, para hablarnos sobre la nueva medida en la que la población vacunada de EE.UU podrá ir sin mascarilla en espacios cerrados: “Este es un reconocimiento de que la vacuna es efectiva en prevenir la infección”. Sin embargo, explicó que “Es una medida complicada de operar, ya que personas no vacunadas podrían hacerlo también y esto facilitaría el incremento de casos en los próximos días… Una persona dueña de un comercio no sabe quién está vacunado y quién no”. También nos atendió Loris Zanatta, historiador y autor del libro ‘Fidel Castro: el último rey católico’, quien nos habló sobre el fenómeno del populismo: “En Latinoamérica la política se sigue viviendo – especialmente a nivel popular – como una prolongación de la religión, y el líder populista es un redentor que promete la expiación de los pecados… El populismo no es una salvación, sino una ilusión de salvación”, comentó. También opinó que “El núcleo ideal del populismo no es de derecha ni de izquierda, el problema con el populismo es que no es pluralista, sino que piensa en un pueblo mítico que está basado en una comunidad de fe”. Y para cerrar, el presidente de San Vicente de Paul en Weston, Douglas Parra, nos habló sobre el evento ‘Contigo Venezuela’: “A través de esta iniciativa buscamos ayudar a los venezolanos más necesitados en nuestro país… Tendremos la grata compañía de más de 30 artistas, tales como Wilmer Ramírez, Alejandra Gómez, Huáscar Barradas, El Pollo Brito, Pedrito Castillo, C4 Trío, entre muchos otros”, nos dijo. Horacio Blanco, vocalista y fundador de la banda Desorden Público, nos acompañará en este episodio de Encuentros Mundanos con el que recorremos los 35 años de historia de uno de los grupos musicales más emblemáticos de la Venezuela moderna. Pocas veces se tiene la ocasión de conversar con alguien cuya conciencia sobre el arte y la ética quede reflejada, de forma tan contundente, en su obra. Horacio Blanco y Desorden Público derivaron en cronistas del país contemporáneo a lo largo de más de tres décadas de carrera ininterrumpida. Sus temas han trascendido el tiempo, convirtiéndose en testimonios musicales de la vida de una nación. Hijos de la movida underground caraqueña de mediados de los años ochenta, Desorden Público fue ganándose un lugar y adquiriendo identidad como la primera banda de Ska venezolana. Sin embargo, nos quedaríamos cortos en la definición si solo nos referimos al género musical que Desorden desarrolló y la hizo convertirse en referencia latinoamericana y mundial. Para los venezolanos representa un espacio cultural, incluso una reserva moral, que nos ha dibujado al país con toda su crudeza. "Políticos Paralíticos", "Tiembla", "Allá cayó", "La danza de los esqueletos", "El tumbao de Simón Guacamayo" o "Látex" son algunas de las creaciones de la banda que permanecen en la conciencia colectiva de los venezolanos. Detrás de todos esos temas está Horacio Blanco con su mirada reflexiva, puntillosa, satírica... En todos los casos, cargada de realidad. Su primer trabajo data de 1988. El disco "Desorden Público", tal como el nombre de la agrupación, editado por el sello CBS Records (más tarde Sony Records), los sacó de la escena reducida de su propio movimiento para lanzarlos a los grandes mercados. La crítica política y el humor negro han estado siempre en la base de sus composiciones. Hay en cada pieza un compromiso de la banda con el entorno, con su ciudad y país. Desorden Público grabó junto al grupo C4 Trío el disco "Pá fuera", que en 2018 recibió una nominación para el premio Grammy anglosajón. La música venezolana del Siglo XXI ha estado marcada por la aparición de grandes talentos y agrupaciones que han marcado una evolución conceptual. Y un instrumento como el cuatro, símbolo de nuestra cultura, ha alcanzado una nueva dimensión de la mano de intérpretes como Héctor Molina, nuestro invitado en este espacio compartido con Daniel Chapela y Carlos Bustamante. Héctor Molina es merideño, de familia melómana. Dio sus primeros pasos en "Los Niños Cantores de Mérida" y le puso alas a su vocación formándose, inicialmente, en los salones de la Universidad de Los Andes para continuar, tiempo después, en la Universidad Nacional de las Artes en la que obtuvo la licenciatura en Música, mención Composición. De Héctor podemos decir también que es uno de los hijos de "La Siembra del Cuatro", esa maravillosa creación del maestro Cheo Hurtado que alumbró a los grandes ejecutantes modernos del instrumento nacional. Nuestro invitado es uno de los rostros de C4 Trío, agrupación de la que es uno de sus fundadores y con la que ha recorrido el mundo. Con C4 grabó varios discos, algunos en compañía de gente connotado como Gualberto Ibarreto, Huascar Barradas, Rafael "El Pollo" Brito, Guaco, Rubén Blades o el cantante nicaragüense Luis Enrique. C4Trío obtuvo dos premios Grammy Latino en su trayectoria de más de una década y una nominación al Grammy anglosajón. Héctor es un artesano de la composición que dejó reflejada su propuesta en el álbum "Giros", publicado en 2018. Y, recientemente, compuso "Balada Resiliente" que, en voz del propio artista, "es una melodía serena, alumbrada en tiempos de angustia e incertidumbre". Fundador del ensamble de música instrumental venezolana "Los Sinvergüenzas", ha realizado con ellos cuatro producciones discográficas: "Bichoneando" (2001), "Desde otro lugar" (2007), "Sinvergüensuranzas" (2011) y "Raíces" (2013). Broadcasted on the 21st of March 2011Actually it was planned to have a man called Zenit in the show alongside his partner in Dub Faustizm but… I got a call from Zenit around lunchtime where he announced that he won’t make it to play his bass heavy tunes in the show due to a problem with the city council of Bienne. The problem was that the city council planned to destroy the place were Zenit and Faustizm had their creative laboratories probably to build a shopping centre or business house or something of sort, which will bring more money (and less fame than having two brilliant ARTists which enrich the city with cultural goods). It seems like the old battle between Economics (equals Money Making) and Art (you know… this thing that really makes us human) reached one of the street art strongholds in Switzerland (at least that was always my impression while being in Bienne). So Faustizm and Zenit occupied with an emergency meeting to discuss the future of their creative facility and what to do about the plans of the city council I was on my own to do this show…So there is another one with C4TR in the hot seat – proper bass madness as usual!Enjoy!Essential Linkage: www.bassvandalizm.com

Steppas Choice 166: Elusive Bastard & C4TRBroadcasted on the 7th of March 2011A farewell to an Elusive Bastard. Oh Bwoy where should I start…I met Svenski one Thursday Night, if I’m not completely wrong something like five to six years ago for one of the legendary Jungle Rocket Drum’n’Bass Shows. I was so thrilled to be on a Radio Show, broadcasting the music I liked, and still like, to a wider mass of fellow Jungleists, that I told Svenski that I would return two weeks later for the next show. Svenski was in for it and that was the start of my radio days and the beginning of a deep musically friendship. Svenski, always motivated to discover and on the look out for new bass music, was also the one who brought in the genre this blog is nearly all about: Dubstep. After running Jungle Rocket together with Svenski for quiet a while, increasing it’s popularity, organising every now and then a meeting of Bass Junkies at various BPM’s, conquering FM Radio in Zurich with the Jungle Rocket Invasion at Lora and sinking don’t know how many gallons of beer, I left the Jungle Rocket Radio Show to do Steppas Choice. That didn’t end our friendship. Svenski was still running Jungle Rocket Radio Show and it was only a question of time until he showed up in one of the Steppas Choice Shows. The reason for that was of course the highly infectious effect of Bass, which is omnipresent in Dubstep. So when Svenski showed up to serve the Bass Madness he didn’t only bring an excellent selection of bass driven, swung out tunes he also came along with a new name: Elusive Bastard. Under this moniker he came to grace the show several times, either as a DJ or as a fellow friend in Bass. I was always pleased to have him in the show because it always had this surprisingly moment init. ELU was one of the first to play the funky strain of UK Bass Music and he was also strongly connected to new breads of the Bass Music strain.So this show sums up the essence of ELU, although this is nearly impossible considering that man’s knowledge and collection of absolutely hideous smashers. So to end this farewell to an Elusive Bastard I just want to say the following:Thank you Sven for everything, for the chitchats, the pointing out of new exciting music, for the cover shows, all the adventures in bass and last but not least for your friendship!Sven, Svenski, Elusive Bastard, ELU: I wish you all the best for your future and may your dreams become true! The first ever streamed/broadcasted STEPPAS CHOICE Show… here’s some history…Steppas Choice 1: BLADE & C4TRBroadcased on the 29th of October 2007Yes Mates! Radio Radius (www.radioradius.ch) got its first show, fully dedicated to the amazing low down brand spanking Sounds of Dubstep’n’Grime!Actually this wasn’t the first Dubstep Radio Show in Switzerland, nor was it the first Dubstep Show on Radio Radius. DJ BLADE, Swiss Dubstep Heavyweight and true Swiss Dubstep Originator, has been running (still is!) a Dubstep / Grime / Sublow / Eskibeats Show on www.audioasyl.net called Wildstyle since years and his show is the longest running Dubstep Radio Show in Switzerland! It may not always be regularly streamed but it’s the first and wickedest Dubstep related show in Zurich and Switzerland! Largin’ up Mr. BLADE!STEPPAS CHOICE developed itself out of the DUBSTEP MADNESS SESSIONS which $venski, founder of the Jungle Rocket Radio Show (a Jungle & Drum’n’Bass Show on Radio Radius) and myself C4TR, held in May 2007 as a special showcase on the Jungle Rocket Radio Show. There were around four follow up shows to this first Session as both of us fall in Love with the sounds of Dubstep and it’s intensive Basslines. So we decided to do some Dubstep Madness in every fourth show of the Jungle Rocket Radio Show, which meant one Dubstep Show every other month. Here’s a taste of what we did back then as a part of the Jungle Rocket Radio Show:DUBSTEP MADNESS 1 was streamed on the 10th of May 2007 and behind the wheels of steel were the likes of DJ PRIMO, with a little Oldskool 2Step set, and both DJ BLADE & DJ UNFINISHED showcasing the Sounds of Dubstep.DUBSTEP MADNESS 2 was streamed on the 5th of July 2007 with New.com and DJ BLADE behind the decks playing some proper skank out Music.DUBSTEP MADNESS 3 was streamed on the 30th of August 2007 with DJ BLADE, DJ UNFINISHED & DEADBYBEATS on duty, who served some of the darker stuff from the future sounds of the underground.DUBSTEP MADNESS 3.5 was streamed on the 4th of October 2007 and was also broadcasted on a proper Radiofrequency in the greater Zurich area. The people of Zurich were graced by the sounds of DJ PRIMO serving some sweet’n’seducing 2Step Beats and the one they call DJ BLADE serving the upfront’n’heavy Dubstep Sound! Especially for this show, which was broadcasted live on air throughout Zurich, flyers and posters were spread out across the city to create awareness that it was taking place. Although these adds were attractively made and well designed, they were not as informative as I would have wished them to be… so over night someone altered the posters slightly by spray painting them with a stencil… and those guys didn’t stop… they even spray painted like a hundred flyers with a stencil… was great fun to see that… anyway many thanks to the stencil crew!DUBSTEP MADNESS 4 was streamed on the 25th of October 2007 and was celebrated with the Unreleased Kollektiv out of Fribourg and a proper 3h skank out bass madness set!After the second DUBSTEP MADNESS SESSION I stated to get anxious about having to wait for 8 weeks until there would be another one… The music was too exciting to wait so long and too beautiful to not be regularly streamed out to the listeners of Radio Radius. As a result I decided to go and ask the Radio Administration if there’s a free slot to do a Dubstep’n’Grime Show. After some negotiation with them we found a slot on Monday Night from 22h-24h CET every two weeks; always on a week where there was no Jungle Rocket Radio Show on Thursday Night. The next decision to be made was on a suitable name for the show and to do the test show for the Radio Administration.Name was difficult… Future Sounds (of Zurich) was the project name… but hey you can’t be taken serious with such a copycat style name… really… next one on the list was .!, (Point Exclamation Mark Coma) which I thought was quiet funny but not particularly practical for Graphics or to shout it (and it also refers a bit to the ctrl alt del thing)… anyway names are a thing of luck… Test Show was still called Future Sounds (of Zurich)…and for the meantime it was okay… Oh and by the way I’ve truly got to say Big up to Mr. UNFINISHED for doing the test show with me on a bloody Thursday afternoon… or was it Wednesday…? So four days after the wicked DUBSTEP MADNESS 4 SESSION I streamed the first Show of the Shows that became suddenly and naturally called STEPPAS CHOICE out of the Radio Radius Studios with the man known as BLADE behind the one’s and two’s. And, oh my gosh, it was a good start! A massive "Thank you!" to BLADE for having done this together with me! Out to the NXT LVL CRW!!!So there we are:Steppas Choice:the most regularly streamed Dubstep Radio Show in Zurich!
