Meet Natalie Cutter, a Boston native whose love for sports started at age 4, wielding a tennis racket at a Greensboro, NC sports camp. From playing to coaching, her days were filled with tennis, cheering for Roger Federer, making NFL game picks, and catching Red Sox and Patriots games—sports has always been her world. Fast forward to 2023, Natalie graduated from Wake Forest (GO DEACS!) with a double major in Economics and Psychology earning High Honors for her fascinating thesis exploring how betting markets responded to the introduction of the serve clock in tennis. Since then, Natalie's presented her research at the Eastern Economics Association for the North American Association of Sports Economics and working on getting her study published in the Journal of Sports Betting. In this episode, we chat about her journey from tennis courts to academic conferences, what sparked her interest in sports economics, and how her work could change the way we think about betting markets. Whether you're a tennis fan, sports nerd, or just curious about the numbers behind the game, this is a conversation you'll love.

Our guest today, Dr. Jeff Powers discusses CBD use in pets. The main areas that CBD has scientifically been shown to be beneficial for is reducing, pain and, increasing movement in dogs with osteoarthritis. Much like in people, CBD has been shown in studies to reduce frequency of seizures in dogs. There's increasing work now in the area of anxiety and the results have been mixed. But what they have found, in a recent study, is as long as you get a significant amount of CBD, into the pet, it can also be beneficial in reducing anxiety as well.  And so some vets may be up to speed on where it can be used and when it can be used, and a lot of other ones may not be, or may be fearful to even recommend it because of potential legal implications because it's not a pharmaceutically approved medicine at this point, except for there's one approved. Guest Expert on CBD Jeffrey Powers, DVM, Practice Owner of Beaver Island Hemp Co. Dr. Power is currently the owner of Jordan Valley and Beaver Island Veterinary Clinic  https://www.veterinaryclinicsnorth.com/, two offices in Northern Michigan. Dr. Powers was president of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association in 1997 and has served on numerous MVMA and AVMA Committees and Councils. Jeff recently Chaired the AVMA's Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents, and  helped form the AVMA's Veterinary Cannabis Working Group.  He also serves as a board member of the Veterinary Cannabis Society https://veterinarycannabissociety.org/about-us/committees/, consults for Green Gruff, Inc https://greengruff.com/ and owns Beaver Island Hemp Company (www.beaverislandhemp.com ) where he grows and produces CBD Hemp Products for human and animal use.  Dr Powers and his human and animal families live in Northern Michigan. Jeffrey Powers, DVM, Practice Owner Caring for animals has been always been a way of life for Dr. Powers. Ever since he was a child he has always had a deep love for all animals. That is why, it wasn't a surprise when he decided that he wanted to become a veterinarian. Dr. Powers decided to follow in his oldest sister's footsteps who is in the health professions field as well. Dr. Powers graduated from Michigan State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science with High Honors, and in 1980 from Michigan State University with a DVM degree with Honors. At the age of 23, he worked under the guidance of Dr. Robert Johnson in Yale, Michigan. He soon established his own practice in 1980, where he would work out of a one room office and would drive the country roads of the thumb of Michigan from farm to farm. Dr. Powers is the founder and owner of Beaver Island Veterinary Services and the owner of  Jordan Valley Animal Clinic, providing mixed animal veterinary services to the community of Beaver Island in Lake Michigan and East Jordan Michigan. He is also the founder and former owner of South Sanilac Veterinary Hospital in Peck, Michigan. Fire Chaplain Ralph E Haynes serves as fire chaplain for the Chula Vista Fire Department. Also known as “CH,” he was born in a small town on October 16, 1954 in Kountze, Texas. At 3, his life was forever changed by a devastating fire in the Haynes family's home. This major event was the catalyst for his desire to become a firefighter. His fire service career began in 1973 after high school. He enlisted in the United States Navy to become a welder because the dream of being a firefighter had faded. However, by God's providence, the welders for the navy were also the firefighter. During his naval service, Ralph served on three ships: the USS Piedmont, the USS Sperry, and the USS Buchanan. Ralph was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1977 in San Diego, California. He immediately enrolled in the fire science program at Miramar College, San Diego. Completing his degree and graduating from the program with High Honors. During this time in college, he was hired as a federal firefighter at the Naval Station Fire Department. He became one of the first blacks to work there as a federal firefighter. In 1980, Haynes was hired as a fire recruit by the City of San Diego Fire Department (SDFD). During his thirty (30) year career, he served as a firefighter, firefighter/EMT, fire engineer, fire captain, dispatch captain, training captain, fire academy lead instructor and various other assignments for the fire department. His honors, awards and commendations are numerous. Ralph recommitted his life to Jesus Christ in 1982 and began training for the ministry as a deacon. He was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1990. He was appointed as the first fire chaplain within the fire ranks of the San Diego Fire Department. He is most proud to be called the husband of Raynice, his wife of 40 years and “daddy” and “papa” by his children and grandchildren. In 2010, after a total fire service career of 36 years and 10 months, Ralph retired from the SDFD. He ended his career by serving over 10.5 years at Fire Station 17, aka “The Hub,” and the busiest fire station in the city of San Diego. This week, Simone is joined by two CLC experts, Erin Chlopak and Brendan Fischer, as well as attorney Peter Earle and “BadAss Grandmas” Ellen Chaffee and Dina Butcher. These guests help explain two key instances in which big money spending impacted local communities. Importantly, they also explain how every day citizens can make their voices heard.Campaign finance can sometimes seem like something far removed from our everyday lives, maybe something that only matters in Washington. But there's a lot going on at the state and local levels, too, and there's a lot that everyday citizens can do to influence things and ensure their community's voices are heard. Guests:Dr. Ellen Chaffee is a consultant to university governing boards after a long career in higher education research and administration. This included two university presidencies, presiding over two national professional associations, and serving on boards of directors. After decades of political independence, she agreed to be a running mate to a gubernatorial candidate, which taught her "too much" about how the current political system works and how unsuited she is for that arena. Her alter ego, BadAss Grandma for Democracy, works to improve America's flawed democracy, which is a root cause of most social problems.Dina Butcher's grandson's friend dubbed her BadAss after seeing her picture on a brochure promoting an initiated measure to amend the ND Constitution regarding having an ethics commission and requiring transparency in political influence on elections. This 2018 campaign led to many of her fellow Republicans questioning her loyalty. As a first generation American, born to German-Jewish refugees who fled Germany in 1939, she feels she needs to speak up against the militant right infiltration of the Republican party. Since she tended a Goldwater campaign headquarters “trailer” in King George County, Virginia with a pause while her husband served in the FBI, she has been a Republican activist, run for elective office in 1996 and served in three Republican administrations. This graduate of Skidmore College with teaching credentials earned at Minot State College, says her daughters say “she has lost her filters and gained her voice” in this her ninth decade.Erin Chlopak leads CLC's work to promote and defend strong campaign finance laws and ensure that existing laws are enforced. Through litigation, advocacy and public education, Erin works with CLC's campaign finance team to make our political system more transparent and accountable, and to protect the right of every American to participate in the democratic process.Read her full bio here.Peter Earle was born in Mexico City on June 22,1950, and emigrated to the United States in 1955.  He graduated from the Chicago-Kent College of Law with High Honors in 1988. Mr. Earle has also successfully litigated numerous individual lead poisoning cases resulting in the expansion of the risk contribution doctrine in cases where the plaintiff is unable to identify the manufacturer of the product that actually caused the injury. Thomas v. Mallett, 701 N.W.2d 523 (WI 2005); Gibson v. American Cyanamid, 760 F.3d 600 (7th Cir. 7/14/14). He is widely regarded as an aggressive bilingual lawyer dedicated to enforcing the rights of working people and holding accountable those who abuse authority.Brendan Fischer currently serves as Deputy Executive Director at Documented, having served as Director, Federal Reform at CLC from 2016-2022.
