(Original pub date: 3/11/20) While the Coen brothers refuse to confirm it, many believe that their movie "Fargo" was inspired by the Carol Thompson murder case. She was viciously killed in her comfortable Saint Paul home by a hitman hired by her eccentric husband, T. Eugene Thompson, in March of 1963, leaving behind four small children. It was an absolutely sensational case, one not only covered extensively by local press, but by national and international press as well. Longtime journalist William Swanson covers the case with me. His book is called "Dial M: The Murder of Carol Thompson". The author's Amazon author page: https://www.amazon.com/stores/William-Swanson/author/B001JSC22G Learn more about your ad choices. When thirty-four-year-old St. Paul housewife Carol Thompson was murdered in the spring of 1963, her entire neighborhood was shocked by the evil that had invaded their middle-class neighborhood. As far as anyone knew, Carol was a happily married mother of four who appeared to have it all, but the cruel brutality of her murder suggested someone had hated her enough to kill her. When investigators began to dig deeper into Carol's life and background, they found the truth was that, far from the happy façade she showed the world, Carol Thompson's life was anything but happy. In the weeks that followed her death, investigators would uncover an unexpectedly complicated conspiracy involving several well-known criminals, all leading back to the one person no one wanted to suspect.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1963. In 1960s St. Paul, there were few nicer places to start a family than the Highland Park neighborhood. It was a peaceful community where neighbors still left their doors unlocked and children played in the streets. But on a snowy March day in 1963, all of that changed when a beloved homemaker, Carol Thompson, was brutally attacked in her own home. Her murder shook Minnesota to the core and the coverage shocked and fascinated the public as the details to a murderous plot began to unravel. Listen in and find out why many call this the "O.J. Simpson Case" of the 1960s. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/patrick-conn/support

But Teresa Hickman, from Dollar, North Dakota, is a special case. Beguiling. Promiscuous. And, on a chilly April morning, dead along an abandoned trolley track in a Southside neighborhood. Teresa Hickman was three months pregnant when she was strangled. Was the unborn child’s father also her killer? Could the killer have been––among the many men drawn to her like flies to honey––Dr. H. David Rose, a middle-aged dentist who admits he was with her the night she died? There’s no forensic evidence or credible witnesses tying him to the murder. Yet the police, including a pair of obsessive investigators with lethal secrets of their own, agree that a Jewish dentist will get them a conviction. Dr. Rose’s spectacular trial and its shocking aftermath will mesmerize the Upper Midwest like few crime sagas before or since. ABOUT W.A. WINTER W.A. This murder was the inspiration for the movie "FARGO".Our story takes place in St. Paul, Minnesota, in a neighborhood called Highland Park. It’s March of 1963, and the homes within this neighborhood are filled with members of the upper-middle class. It was a neighborhood that a lot of people would aspire to raise a family in. One where no one would suspect danger or foul play. This was the case for the home at 1720 Hillcrest Avenue, where the Thompson family lived. It was a lavish property with an almost regal feel to it. And the Thompson family, surely, had no idea, that what would happen in their home would go on to become one of the biggest murder cases in Minnesota history. You’re listening to Murder in America.

The local newspaper is dying. Across the country, newsrooms are either shuttering completely or struggling through massive staff layoffs. It's becoming increasingly clear that in the void left by trusted local reporting, misinformation is taking root. A sweeping investigation by the New York Times uncovered a conservative pay-for-play network that disguises itself as unbiased local coverage. The enterprise includes 1300 sites spanning all 50 states, and with familiar web layouts and innocuous titles like Wichita Standard or Illinois Valley Times, you may have come across one and been none the wiser. As The Morning Call's health reporter Binghui Huang puts it, there are simply not a lot of places where separate healthcare entities come together to solve multiple problems. When it comes to the opioid epidemic, it's all about solving co-mingled hoards of problems, requiring a complicated coordination of resources and services. People at the front lines of the opioid crisis are facing it as such. But how can they work within a health system infrastructure that is so fragmented? "Treatment" was the theme of our fourth expert roundtable discussion on the opioid crisis. And those who we gathered at The Morning Call this month gave us some hope in the direction of bridging these divides. Reporters Huang and Carol Thompson discuss what we learned. Go to themorningcall.com/opioids for videos, analysis and more. Valley View is a production of The Morning Call in Allentown, Pennsylvania, sponsored by the Lehigh Center for Clinical Research. Kayla Dwyer is the host and producer. Music in this episode is by George Beck, Bob Bradley, Paul Lawler and Martyn Swain.
In the third roundtable discussion of The Morning Call's yearlong series on the opioid crisis, five public health leaders -- from the local to the state level -- talk about the obstacles that keep them from preventing overdose deaths and effectively distributing life-saving medication. Has Pennsylvania's disaster declaration achieved real change? Are public health campaigns reaching those who need to hear it the most? Why are some harm reduction approaches - like needle exchange programs and safe injection sites - so controversial? Guest-host Binghui Huang sat down with reporters Carol Thompson, Pamela Lehman and Kayla Dwyer to dig into these issues. Opioids are medicine, and that's why it's been easy enough for the masses to point fingers at doctors and pharmacists in the midst of the opioid epidemic gripping the nation. In our second roundtable -- in a series of six by The Morning Call on the opioid crisis -- we heard what medical professionals had to say about this. Reporters Binghui Huang and Carol Thompson discussed the roundtable and how the medical field has responded to the epidemic as our series continues.
