Bill Lomax, President & CEO of First Nations Bank of Canada speaks about Indigenous Financial Nation Building and the Future of Indigenous Business. Bill shares present and future factors influencing the financing of Nation-building in Indigenous communities from the perspective of the only Indigenous-owned bank in Canada. From new settlements made between Indigenous Nations and the federal Crown to new business partnerships and ventures between Nations, a series of financial and social pressure points and how they could be tackled will be highlighted.Bill grew up in Terrace, B.C. and studied in Vancouver before heading south to spend 22 years working on Wall Street and in Private equity in the United States. As a graduate of UBC's law school and after obtaining his MBA at Columbia University, Mr. Lomax began his career as a lawyer facilitating land claim negotiations for the British Columbia Treaty Commission. He later worked for the Canadian Federal Department of Justice before entering the investment sector in the United States, working for firms such as Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs.Lomax believes the First Nations Bank of Canada will be a catalyst to create economic growth that is inclusive and sustainable in Indigenous Nations and communities. His deep experience in the US will serve him well. Ever shopped at Lululemon, The Body Shop, or Roots in Saskatoon? You can thank the Haddocks for franchising those businesses and bringing them to the Saskatchewan market! Learn about the many different ventures the Haddocks have been involved in and Gord's top tips for business success. His entrepreneurial spirit led him into many business ventures, including an advertising agency, music store, drug stores, card and gift stores, and businesses involving land development, fast food, clothing, tourism, bath and skincare products, entertainment, and publishing. His businesses have been both franchise and self-started.Maureen and Gordon formed Trek 2000 Corporation, a holding company, in 1986, when they brought The Body Shop franchise to Saskatchewan. For twenty years, they grew The Body Shop Saskatchewan, until there were four stores. They also pioneered a home party business in Saskatchewan for The Body Shop International. Toward the end of this time, they brought lululemon to Saskatchewan. One of the other retail business ventures that overlapped this period was a Roots franchise. No longer in retail, Gord is developing new business relationships and projects involving land development, construction, and rental properties. The Haddocks still have several entertainment projects in the works. Their business philosophy is simple; work hard, have fun, make money, and do good things.Maureen has written two books about Gord's childhood adventures. The freedom he experienced as a child ensured that his already entrepreneurial spirit was allowed to flourish.The Haddocks began giving scholarships to entrepreneurial students, sponsoring an entrepreneurial speaker series, and operating a competition for young entrepreneurs, aged 7 to 18, in affiliation with Edwards School of Business. Raised on a farm near Kenaston, Saskatchewan, she currently resides with her husband, Craig, and stepson, Aiden in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.Mackenzie earned her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan in 2003. She began her career in the business community in Saskatoon, working as a Sales Representative for prominent companies like Hershey's and SaskTel.Driven by her passion for shopping, fashion, and her business knowledge, Mackenzie founded Two Fifty Two Boutique in Saskatoon in 2014. Her boutique aimed to provide a unique and stylish shopping experience to customers. The success of her first location led her to open a second store in Regina in 2017. Mackenzie transitioned to an Online Exclusive platform for her boutiques in 2021 and sold Two Fifty Two Boutique in December of 2022, becoming a full circle entrepreneur. Mackenzie's dedication to her business and community involvement did not go unnoticed. She received numerous award nominations, becoming a finalist for awards including Women of Distinction, SABEX, and ABEX. Her boutique received two Customer Service SABEX awards and the New Business Venture SABEX Award in 2016.Mackenzie's expertise in business and entrepreneurship has led her to coach and consult with entrepreneurs and small business owners. After over 20 successful years in the financial industry in Calgary, John left his corporate role behind to focus on new ventures in the clean technology and energy industry through entrepreneurship. John is a finance and capital markets professional with over 20 years of energy industry and senior banking experience. He is currently CEO of Lucky Strike Energy Ltd. and W4 Solar Ltd. and serves as Chairperson of the Board for E3 Lithium Ltd. Previously, John served as Vice President with ATB Financial and was responsible for the credit portfolio within energy, oil field services, project finance, and financial markets. Prior to this, John co-founded and held the position of Senior Vice President Finance and CFO of an Alberta-based, private equity-backed intermediate E&P producer. Anastasia Stadnyk talks about her experience as a young leader in a senior management position with ATB Financial and the triumphs and trials that come along with such a role. Triumphs include the successful leading of teams to implement new services and feeling confident in your ability to make connections with your team that help motivate and inspire.
