Welcome to another thrilling edition of The Meat Grinder, your weekly dose of high school football in Connecticut with GameTimeCT's Sean Patrick Bowley and Pete Paguaga, and the weekly GameTimeCT Pick'ems Podcas: CIAC quarterfinal edition. And what a Thanksgiving week it was as we completed the CIAC state playoff field. There were upsets galore in the final Class S standings; a stunning revival for Fairfield Prep, which toppled West Haven to become the first losing team to qualify; Jett Hall's legendary Valley performances as Naugatuck toppled Ansonia in a battle of unbeatens. But the best game of Thanksgiving belonged to the Apple Valley Classic, where — at long last — Notre Dame recruit Matt Jeffery, injured for the better part of the last seven weeks, made his triumphant return to the gridiron and led Cheshire past rival Southington in a ride-or-die scenario in a game it hadn't won since 2011. This is what you do when you have a strange name and need everyone to remember you. Don't be a little weird, stand on the edge of absurd. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is... Well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [No Bull RV Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young and Steve Semple here. Stephen, you told me the topic today, and it was sort of the joke of a lot of standup comedians, I think, in the '70s because the brand had started growing and people are like, "What is a Nauga?" And I'm talking about Naugahyde. You mentioned that today's subject is Naugahyde, and it's sort of ubiquitous anymore. It's sort of an old-timey joke now, but it was a thing and it ended up being kind of a big deal. So what is a Nauga? Stephen Semple: This is going to be a bit of a fun one. So Naugahyde is a brand of artificial leather. It's basically vinyl. It's composed of a knit fabric and expanded polyvinyl chloride PVC coating. And it was developed by Byron Hunter, who was a senior chemist at United States Rubber, and it's now made by a spinoff of Uniroyal. It was invented in 1914, and it was the first rubber-based artificial leather ever made. The name was trademarked in 1936, and comes from where it was first produced, which is Naugatuck, Connecticut. So that's the reason why they decided to use the great name Naugahyde. It's such a good name, right? Dave Young: That's our episode. Thanks for listening. Stephen Semple: So Naugahyde is mainly used for furniture. It's easy to clean, long-lasting, and also you find it in car seats. But in 1960, competition started to rise in the vinyl furniture area. So they wanted to create a campaign to separate Naugahyde from the competition. So Uniroyal hired George Lewis and designer Kurt Wells. So here's the challenge that they looked at. They said, "Naugahyde, it's a hard name. What the heck are we going to do with this?" Dave Young: They named it in the 1930s? Stephen Semple: 1936. Dave Young: Okay. And when did they hire this designer? Stephen Semple: Early 1960s. Dave Young: They went 30 years just saying Naugahyde. Stephen Semple: Right. Essentially in the early days, they didn't have much competition. There weren't other people making it. So it was sort of one of those ones. You're the only game in town, or you're the largest game in town. And then all of a sudden, other people started getting into the turf, and so they wanted to separate from it. So what George and Kurt did was they created a fictional character called the Nauga, and the hide of a Nauga is Naugahyde. Here's the thing I found that was funny about it. Nauga's easy to remember, and as soon as you think about that, all of a sudden Naugahyde becomes easy, because it's a hide of a Nauga. And the Nauga is a colorful, horned, happy looking creature who's native to the island of Sumatra, and was once hunted close to extinction. But hunting them for their hide is unnecessary because they painlessly shed their skin once a year. That's the story they created. Dave Young: Of course it is. I don't know. There's probably no way to prove this, but I'll bet you that the jokes about Naugahyde preceded that story. They probably just leaned into the story and because if this thing called Naugahyde existed and there wasn't that story, you would be talking about, "Ha. We're sitting on a Naugahyde booth in a restaurant. I wonder how many Naugas had to die to make this booth." All of those jokes would've been there already.

It's a jam-packed, albeit delayed, special episode in which Pete and Sean look back at the thriller at Ken Strong Stadium where unbeaten West Haven survived a spirited comeback against rival Hamden to stay unbeaten, not to mention a number of other wild results from a weatherbeaten Week 10 schedule. No. 1 Maloney's reign lasts all of one week, thanks to Glastonbury. Could the Westies capture the imagination of the state's Top 10 voters? Or would a former favorite reclaim the top spot? Also, the Clinch Is In! Twenty-eight teams have unofficially punched their ticked to the state playoffs in this expanded six-championship season. We take a look at which of the remaining 20 spots can be filled in the coming days. One of the teams desperately needing a victory to get in is 6-3 Windsor, which faces next-door rival Bloomfield in its finale Saturday. It's the first time the two CCC powers have played in more than a decade. Joining us as a special guest is Windsor coach ROB FLEETING, who two 22-year, two-time state championship coaching career reached the 200-victory milestone last week. Fleet looks back at all the great players and great teams under his charge over the years, plus how his program deals with yearly turnover. So join us, won't you? It's beginner's season.  Well, actually, it's always beginner season for us because there is always a race to learn to TRI.   For the month of June, we will highlight beginners as they share their stories.  It's the modern-day race report, if you digg.     This week's featured beginners are: Nargis Fontaine and the Naugatuck Tri Team    Ask for what you need, receive the gems, and then knock down the door to Tri. Nargis Fontaine doesn't let an opportunity slip past her. She is a skillful martial artist who doesn't like to be underestimated.  She shapes her workouts by looking forward to them. For her, it's not just about checking a box.  Most Newbies don't have the opportunity to attend training camp before their first race. However, she's a member of D.I.S.K., so she didn't have a typical first season.      When your civic's teacher encourages you to tri, you know you are destined for greatness. Thank you, Mr. Fobler, for introducing  Ayana Williams, Jadya Costa, and Leticia DoNascimento to triathlon, getting excited to have a triathlon team only to be told it's not going to happen.  Well, these young ladies would not be told they won't be able to TRI.  They quickly galvanized themselves and made a decision to  Tri despite the initial obstacles that got in their way. After all, isn't every goal worth having worth fighting for? These high school track stars still wanted a challenge. So, they used their resources to garner support, and bam, now we have new triathletes!  These young ladies know the true meaning of teamwork and its power to make the dream work.  They started together and literally finished together.    Don't forget to leave a review, share it with your friends, and Follow Tri Beginner's luck on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.  And send any questions or feedback you have to  imreadyto@tribeginnersluck.com.     Cheers to defying the odds and being trailblazers,  Let's Tri this!
