Is your news informing you, or is it just making you angry? Today on Eyes Wide Open, we're joined by Kira Shishkin, the founder of Informed.now, the premier unbiased news by text service. In this episode, Kira and Nick pull back the curtain on a compromised media ecosystem fueled by sensationalism, bias, and profit motives. We explore the radical intentionality required to navigate a landscape where news and commentary have become dangerously blurred and why factual reporting is a necessity for a free society. We dive into how clickbait headlines and social media algorithms are actively dividing families and hollowing out our communities. Kira shares his mission to restore trust through a minimalist, primary-source approach that prioritizes media independence over advertiser dollars. We discuss the Orwellian influence of misinformation, the role of AI in creating false equivalencies, and practical strategies like "bucketing" your news to avoid mental burnout. Whether you're exhausted by the 24-hour news cycle or seeking a way to form your own opinions without corporate interference, this conversation provides a roadmap for returning to a culture of transparency, critical thinking, and clarity.

In the dotcom era, communication professor Angèle Christin embedded herself in newsrooms, where she witnessed how audience metrics tilted journalism toward viral content over in-depth reporting. Christin now researches the influencer economy and how content creators monetize their production by any of three means – brand sponsorships, engagement-based payments from social media platforms, and direct-to-audience subscriptions, donations, or sales. She says this engagement-based ecosystem steers communication toward what captures attention, not always what best informs. To improve our reeling national dialogue, we must first change the financial model of social media content, Christin tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast. Have a question for Russ? Send it our way in writing or via voice memo, and it might be featured on an upcoming episode. 1369. MacVoices Live! returns after a brief hiatus to tackle Microsoft Surface price hikes andquestion whether the reporting around them was misleading, Chuck Joiner, David Ginsburg, Guy Serle, Jeff Gamet, Marty Jencius and Jim Rea explore what Anthropic's shelved Mythos and Project Glasswing projects signal about AI security, coding, and enterprise use. The fastest way to lose your grip on Russia is to reach for the word “war” every time a scary headline lands. The incentives are everywhere: politicians who want public backing for big defence spending, media outlets that live on attention, and all of us who share first and think later. I look at two particular examples: the current fascination in the British press with the idea that Russia may launch an attack using long-range missiles, and a truly insane essay by Konstantin Malofeyev in his Tsargrad media outlet fantasising about a tactical nuclear strike to end the Ukraine war. The British article is here, the Russian one here. The podcast's corporate partner and sponsor is Conducttr, which provides software for innovative and immersive crisis exercises in hybrid warfare, counter-terrorism, civil affairs and similar situations. You can also follow my blog, In Moscow's Shadows, and become one of the podcast's supporting Patrons and gain question-asking rights and access to exclusive extra materials including the (almost-) weekly Govorit Moskva news briefing right here. Clickbait, Manipulation, Angst-Titel – Ich habe genug davon.
When we call something "clickbait," we don't mean it as a compliment. But let's be real: we also click. It's hard to resist a spicy story, and 19th-century newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst knew it. At a time when most papers merely reported events, his papers created them, sending reporters out to perform daring rescues, solve sensational murders, and even meddle in geopolitics. Today on the show: the man who brought spectacle and scandal to the news — and changed journalism forever.Guests:Karen Roggenkamp, professor of English at East Texas A&M University and author of Narrating the News and Sympathy, Madness, and CrimeW. In this co-hosted episode, Travis is joined in studio by his producer Eric for a fun, fast-paced conversation about wealth-building, viral money clips, and what most people get wrong about “getting rich.” They react to Kevin O'Leary's story about his mom quietly becoming wealthy by putting 20% of every paycheck into dividend-paying stocks and bonds for decades, riff on the clickbait culture around money advice, and then bring it back to Travis's core philosophy: build wealth slowly and predictably, but don't postpone your entire life until retirement. Along the way, they veer into Oscars memes, Macaulay Culkin's ridiculous legal name change, and a hilarious thought experiment involving Kevin O'Leary, a ping pong paddle, and “how much would it take?” On this episode we talk about: Kevin O'Leary's mom's simple investing rules and how she quietly built serious wealth over 60+ years Why “a little bit of money over a long period of time” is the boring but reliable path to getting rich The danger of panic-selling during market crashes and why Travis treats long-term investments as “gone” The tension between saving aggressively for the future and actually enjoying your life in the present How to think about increasing your income so 20% investing doesn't mean 0% joy Clickbait money culture, viral Diary of a CEO clips, and Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin A ridiculous (and very on-brand) segment about what it would take to let Mr. Wonderful spank you with a ping pong paddle Top 3 Takeaways Consistency beats complexity: Automatically investing a fixed percentage of your income into broad, dividend-paying markets and not touching the principal over decades is one of the most reliable ways to build wealth. Your biggest enemy is usually your own behavior; panic-selling in downturns destroys long-term gains, which is why Travis mentally treats invested money as off-limits instead of “available cash.” Don't sacrifice your entire present for a hypothetical future—if 20% investing leaves you with nothing for experiences you care about, the real assignment is to raise your income so you can fund both your future and your current life. Notable Quotes “Once I invest the money, it's gone. I shipped it overseas to go fight my war for me.” “You're purposefully choosing a worse life now for a better one later, which is usually good—but if you only ever do that, you never really enjoy the present.” “If you think there's no number, you're lying to yourself. There's always a number.” Connect with Travis Chappell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/travischappell Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/traviscchappell Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/travischappell Other: https://travischappell.com Travis Makes Money is made possible by High Level – the All-In-One Sales & Marketing Platform built for agencies, by an agency. Vanessa has sworn off sweets, which of course immediately resulted in several listeners sending donuts to the station. How long did she last before she broke down? It's rattlesnake season and multiple biting incidents have been reported, including one death. So we decided it was time for an AMA with a rattlesnake expert. Listen to learn about snake myths, what time of day you're most likely to see them, and how snake sex works! We also heard from the cryptkeeper herself during a new Old People Secrets, discovered we're eating cereal all wrong during Clickbait, and heard from listeners who met their heroes & whether or not they regretted it (apparently everyone's met Wee Man & Gwen Stefani).
