Summary:Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Graham Nash joins us to talk about CSN, his solo career, and his most recent album.Part One:Joe Biden and Donald Trump are the two oldest presidents in American history. And it looks like they might square off once again in a contest of the aged. But guess which rock stars are older than our oldest presidents? Scott and Paul hash it out, and you might be surprised. Part Two:Our in-depth conversation with Graham NashAbout Graham Nash:Grammy winner Graham Nash began his career with The Hollies, co-writing the Top 5 singles “Stop Stop Stop,” “On a Carousel,” and “Carrie Anne,” as well as penning the critically-acclaimed “King Midas in Reverse.” After leaving the group he joined forces with David Crosby of The Byrds and Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield to assemble one of music's first supergroups, Crosby, Stills & Nash. As a trio, and as a quartet with Neil Young, CSN became one of the most popular groups of the 1970s. As a songwriter, Nash contributed such classics to the group as “Marrakesh Express,” “Lady of the Island,” “Teach Your Children,” “Our House,” and the Top 10 hits “Just a Song Before I Go” and “Wasted on the Way.” As a solo artist, he penned classics such as “Better Days,” “Chicago,” and “Prison Song.” Nash is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as both a member of the Hollies and CSN. Additionally, he was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II. While continually building his musical legacy, Graham is also a renowned photographer and visual artist whose work has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. His latest project, and his seventh studio album as a solo artist, is entitled Now.

The final part of our epic trilogy exploring the rivalries within CSNY examines the arrival of Neil Young, whose introduction to the highly-combustible supergroup made the band all the more explosive. Initially hired by his ex-Buffalo Springfield rival Stephen Stills as a sideman for CSN’s live performances, Young earned a full partnership in the group. He ultimately became the most influential member through a mix of sheer talent and masterful passive aggressive manipulation. While CSN prioritized the collective, Young felt allegiance to no one but himself and used the band's immense popularity as a launching pad for his burgeoning solo career. His willingness to walk away at the slightest provocation forced the other three to cater to his whims, tipping the delicate balance of power in his direction. As the drawing power of CSNY became exponentially greater than CSN, the trio would be forced to make even greater concessions to the mercurial Young. CSNY would be done Neil’s way, or not at all — much to the chagrin of Stills.  Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

August 1969 — Humble Pie — “As Safe as Yesterday is” Wayne presents this incredible album featuring both Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton on vocals and guitar. It is easy to see how Humble Pie was such a powerful - but underrated - rock band at the end of the 60's. Their debut album “As Safe as Yesterday is” was a UK release, and remains surprisingly hard to pin down in genres with its mix of pop, rock, and blues - it was even one of the first albums to be described as “heavy metal.” Let's take a look at this groundbreaking album and see for ourselves how we would describe it. “Stick Shift” Peter Frampton wrote this psychedelic-leaning song, which was the second track on the album. Frampton was 18 years old at the time, and this was his second band. “Bang ” This rocking piece leads off side two of the album. Steve Marriott wrote this blues laden, almost southern rock track. By the way, the origins of the phrase "humble pie" are from a peasant's dish of deer innards, though now it is more similar to the phrase "eating crow." “As Safe as Yesterday Is” This lengthy title track is one of Wayne's favorite. Frampton's vocals are prominent on this song. Frampton would leave the group in 1971. The drum work is reminiscent of The Who, with moments that sound like Robert Plant and Jethro Tull. “Natural Born Bugie (Woman)” This one is very similar to southern Rock, which is interesting given the UK origins of the band. "Looking like the cover of a 20-dollar magazine." Steve Marriott tried to revive Humble Pie in 1991, and had gotten together with Frampton about it when he tragically died from a cigarette fire in bed. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “The Pusher” by Steppenwolf The motorcycle cult classic "Easy Rider" was released in 1969, and produced or inspired a number of songs popular at the time, including this very dark blues riff. STAFF PICKS: “Marrakesh Express” by Crosby, Stills & Nash Brian's staff pick was inspired by Graham Nash's trip to Morocco. Nash rode the train from Casablanca to Marrakesh, moving from first class on down to the lower class cars, encountering different types of people and situations along the way. “One” by Three Dog Night Rob's staff pick starts with a beat that was inspired by the busy signal on a phone line. This song made it to number 5, and was Three Dog Night's first gold record. “Polk Salad Annie” by Tony Joe White Bruce's staff pick takes us to backwoods Louisiana for some swamp rock, and a "poke sallet" - a dish of cooked greens made from a common weed in the southern U.S. Elvis Presley would make this popular as a staple on his tours. “Questions 67 & 68” by Chicago Wayne's staff pick hearkens back to the first album from The Chicago Transit Authority - known as Chicago after the governmental organization sued them. LAUGH TRACK: “A Boy Named Sue” by Johnny Cash We finish off this podcast with Johnny Cash's humorous song about a boy who had to grow up with a decidedly feminine name.

This week, we sat down with the legendary Jim Weider. Jim was born and raised in Woodstock, NY and from 1985-2000 he was the lead guitarist for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductees The Band. His first ever show with The Band was a Crosby, Stills, and Nash reunion in Dallas Texas in front of over 30,000 people. Talk about baptism by fire. Throughout Jim’s career, he has jammed with Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, Scotty Moore of Elvis Presley’s original band, played with The Grateful Dead at Soldier field and rocked the stage at The Berlin Wall Concert in front of over 300,000. No single concert has ever been bigger in attendance. In 2013, The Weight Band formed when two former members of The Band, Jim Weider and Randy Ciarlante, decided to continue The Band’s rich musical tradition. The Weight Band keeps the Woodstock spirit of The Band alive. In 2018, The Weight Band released an original album titled ‘World Gone Mad,’ a commentary on today’s divisive political climate and the hardship of American Life. In this conversation, Jim and I get into growing up in Woodstock, his time with The Band, jamming with Rock n Roll icons, the psychedelic culture, and more.
