We come to you live from Alabama after Day 1 of the Masters CrossFit Games.
Eva Thornton is an extraordinary woman and warrior! She is an example of resilience and athleticism as a way of life! A high level gymnast in her youth, a pole vaulter, sprint kayaker and lastly a CrossFit Games Masters athlete, competing at 3 CF Games, winning the 50-54division in 2018, she has had a number of significant challenges to her health over the past few years: holding her back from repeat appearances at the CF Games: Eva had back surgery in 2019 after being diagnosed with Tuberculosis in the spine at the end of 2018. Unfortunately the treatment she was put on initially wasn't as effective as it needed to be and she ended up with complications. There were also major complications during surgery (ruptured aorta resulting in significant blood loss etc). It was a big mess trying to come back. Eva ended up with a 5-level fusion in her T-spine and a big stent in the aorta. In 2021 she had the fusion (metal work) removed. Then more recently she had a herniated disc in her neck which caused problems with the exiting nerve at C6/7 leading to weakness in the right arm. She had a disc replacement surgery just over 5 weeks ago. Things are improving…this conversation will lift your spirits and offer you strength, courage and wisdom no matter what challenges you are facing!
We talk about Don Faul on Coffee Pods and Wods, Castro lashes out at Hiller, Sean Woodland and Nikki Brazier are not brought back to broadcast the Games, plus the PIT Teen Menorship program is off and running, Castro has knocked out some interviews, Service Cup is over and winners have been announced.
Leigh Coates is a two-time CrossFit Games Masters athlete in the Women's 55-59 Division. Today we talk about her preparation for the upcoming 2024 CrossFit Games season. You would think that a two-time Games competitor would consider themselves an athlete. But for Leigh Coates, she's just barely coming to grips with the idea of calling herself one. Today, she and Chris, a two-time CrossFit Masters participant, recap her 2023 season, what she looks forward to in the 2024 season, and how she is able to maintain high levels of performance beyond the conventional expectations of a person her age. Are you too old to start CrossFit or any sport? Perhaps Leigh has an answer for you. For the final episode of the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games and the 2023 CrossFit season Fran, Jessie and Jenn take it full circle as they close out the games from the back of the US Army Fitness Truck.Jenn explains how she battled through early season shoulder injury which found her on the sidelines during our Episode 97 Wodapalooza discussion. The mortar landed at his feet, shredding his leg and torso. Despite immediate medical care, he died twice on the helicopter during medical evacuation. He spent a week in a coma. He was told he would never walk again. This was 12 years ago in Basra, Iraq. In August, he competed in his second CrossFit Games finals. Meet Spencer Whiteley, the British Army Veteran who walked into a CrossFit gym on cane over a decade ago with no plan except to find a way to walk . Spencer joined Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff from the US Army Fitness Truck at 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games just after his competition ended to share his story of combat, loss, resilience, perseverance and grit. Performing at our best often requires perspective and the ability to stack small wins day in and day out towards our goal. Spencer shows us how our approach to training and life is based on seizing opportunities, overcoming physical and mental limitations, and balancing our training mindset with ripping our shirt off and competing to win in some small way each day. On todays episode of the podcast, the coaches sit down and outline their step by step process on how they work with the population of masters athletes. There are many nuances when it comes to working with this demographic that is lost on most coaches. If the proper approach isnt taken...it can lead to a much higher chance of injury or failure than would be the case when working with a typical athlete in their early 20's. And having just come off a CrossFit Games Masters win, this seemed like the ideal time to shine a spotlight on the methodology that the team uses. Enjoy!

In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with Lynne Knapman, who is a 12-time CrossFit Games Masters competitor. We chatted about how Lynne managed to becoming one of the fittest in the world in her age group with a very limited athletic background prior to discovering CrossFit. Lynne outlined her training regimen, her nutrition strategy, and her keys to staying injury free throughout her athletic career. Lynne Knapman started her CrossFit journey in her 50s after deciding to support a friend in running a 14km road run. Prior to this, she used to run on the treadmill for three kilometers at nine kilometers an hour. After telling her husband she wanted to run the 14 kilometers, he put her in touch with his trainer, Chad McKay, a former CrossFit Games athlete, who has now been her coach for the past 13 years. Lynne is only athlete to have qualified for every CrossFit Games masters competition since it was introduced and has been the Australian National Champion in her age group several times. She is now a 12-time CrossFit Games athlete, which is the most appearances in the history of the CrossFit Games. She took the 8th place finish in her first year, a career-best finish of second place in 2015 in the Masters 55-59 Division, following it with another podium finish in 2016, when she took third. In 2020, she took first place in the Open Masters 60-64 Division.
