SUSIE MAE MCC OY (AKA) SWEET GEORGIA BROWN South Carolina's Susie Mae McCoy was a bright eyed girl with dreams of becoming a big time wrestling star when the 19-year old started training with The Fabulous Moolah and her then husband Buddy Lee in 1957. Moolah was one of the biggest female stars in America at the time and had started a stranglehold on booking women within the NWA and other territories following the decline of Billy Wolfe‘s monopoly. Renamed as Sweet Georgia Brown, McCoy made her pro wrestling debut a year later, in 1958, at the age of 20. Sweet Georgia Brown was Moolah's first African-American student in her school and Moolah and Lee had high hopes for the emerging fad in pro wrestling “Negro Women Wrestlers”. But despite her fame and rise on the women's wrestling circuit, Sweet Georgia Brown lived in fear for much of career. At first, it was from the rampant racism of the south – at some venues, she was smuggled in in the trunk of a car so that the KKK or other extremists wouldn't be tipped off to a black women entering the arenas or hotel rooms. But sadly, the most real terror was the clear and present danger of her trainer and manager, Moolah and Buddy Lee. Moolah and Lee would take a whopping 25% of their booking fees off the top (sometimes even more), often pocketing much more, leaving the wrestlers with barely enough to survive. In order to secure better booking for herself (or her girls to get better pay for herself), she would systematically prostitute her trainees to other promoters or even wrestlers. Sweet Georgia Brown was not immune to these heinous practices. At only 19-years old, Susie Mae McCoy became South Carolina's first black female wrestler. In 1957, she went to train under one of wrestling's biggest names, The Fabulous Moolah and her husband, Buddy Lee. She chose the name “Sweet Georgia Brown” and by the time she was 20, she was one of Moolah's most successful wrestlers. Even though she was incredibly talented, she was still taken advantage of due to her age and race. Throughout her career in the deep south, she had to hide in the trunks of cars to avoid the KKK, who would protest the thought of a black woman being allowed in arenas and hotels. On top of that, Moolah and Buddy Lee took 25% of all of her profits, leaving McCoy with little to support herself. In the Vice documentary Dark Side of the Ring, it was finally revealed that Buddy Lee himself was the father of one of McCoy's children, confirming long held rumors that Lee forced his trainees to sleep with him in exchange for better bookings. Despite these challenges, McCoy remained strong and by 1963, she was chosen to beat the very white and very blonde Nell Stewart for the NWA Texas Women's title. This would make her the first black woman to ever win the belt in one of the NWA's largest territories. Sweet Georgia Brown retired in 1972. According to her family, she could no longer endure the abuse of Lee and Moolah. She died in 1989 from breast cancer at 51. Her successful 15-year career in one of the most racist, toughest and sexist industries around is truly badass.

Livro: https://amzn.to/3UdDm6Y Twitter e insta: @termineicast
APEX Express is a weekly magazine-style radio show featuring the voices and stories of Asians and Pacific Islanders from all corners of our community. The show is produced by a collective of media makers, deejays, and activists. Intimate Sounds of the Four Continents Episode #2 Intimate Sounds of the Four Continents combines Lisa Lowe's theories and music from around the world to create intellectually stimulating sonic experience. DJ Miu created this radio show with a mission to spread the message: “Freedom is Yet to Come.” I encourage listeners to take the time to read, write, and resist. We require inoculations that repel the seductions of corporate servitude. Cauleen Smith told us. Starting with reading Lisa Lowe's writing. Reading is Fundamental. Episode #2 This month's episode features Thao and The Get Down, Stay Down, Star Feminine Band, Taj Majal, and Tohur Aizawa Quartet. Sounds from Cambodia, Benin, Americas, and so much more. With winter coming in the northern hemisphere, I was inspired by music that ponders, wanders, and lingers. A time of reflection of the change from mercury retrograde and the stillness in this Scorpio season and recent Scorpio eclipse and the current mars in retrograde in Gemini. All that to say, reflect on your desires, needs, and goals. Be honest, truly honest about where you are and where you want to be. Send compassion to yourself and those around you. Listen to this set and allow yourself to transmute these energies by meditation and sonic medicine. Star Feminine Band A group of 7 girls, aged between 10 and 17 years old, from Natitingou, a remote town in the north of Benin. I absolutely fell in love with the energy of their music, light and playful and deeply talented. I found their record digging in Pasadena, CA over the summer of 2022. Thao and The Get Down, Stay Down I first heard her and her band in Los Angeles for my auntie's birthday. It was a free concert and that's how my aunt convinced our whole family to go. I was 14 at the time and I didn't really connect to her music at first, my auntie did get an autograph and it was the happiest I've ever seen her. But then when the pandemic came around, I listened to Thao's tiny desk and it ignited a love for her and her music. I had spent more time learning about folk, rock music so I was able to appreciate it more and understand the depths of her music, especially during March of 2020. Geraldo Pino So I found this next track off the Nigeria Soul Power 70 Compilation album. It's got some serious gems on it and this is no exception. Pino is a Sierra Leonean Nigerian musician. He was one of the early pioneers of modern African pop music. The Charles LLoyd Quartet This was one of the “First psychedelic jazz bands” and the group was all about “Communication is the prime concern” The quartet is made up of Keith Jarret, Ron McClure, Charles Lloyd, Jack DeJohnnette. Taj Mahal Taj Mahal is a Blues musician but fuses Caribbean, Africa, India, Hawaii, and the South Pacific so naturally I had to share some of his music. I found his music crate digging as well as all good music is found by word of mouth or found hidden in a crate. Henry chose his stage name, Taj Mahal, from dreams he had about Mahatma Gandhi, India, and social tolerance. He started using the stage name in 1959 or 1961—around the same time he began attending the University of Massachusetts. He formed one of the first interracial bands back in 1964 when he moved out to Santa Monica and they released one album together before creative differences. At that time he also worked with Buddy Lee and Muddy Waters. Later in his career, he formed Hula Blues Band in Hawaii. He will be performing in Oakland if you want to check him out on December 2 and 3 at the fox theater and in Los Angeles on December 4. Tupac Tupac is famously known for his rap music and repping Los Angeles, California. Through kindness and faith, Fausto was able to use his trauma to thrive and achieve his goal of helping others. Today, Fausto helps his mom, is sober and a popular public speaker.

In SA Cosby's latest novel, RAZORBLADE Tears, has the feel of a buddy cop movie in the vain of Lethal WElcome, but in this case the main characters are two reformed criminals in their 50s, African American Ike Randolph and self-proclaimed redneck Buddy Lee. They team up to track down the double murder of their sons who were married to each other. The novel examines the homophobia that kept both fathers from attending their sons' wedding, and the tumultuous relationship they had with them. RAZORBLADE Tears also explores, as Cosby explained in the interview, race, sex, and class, the Holy Trinity of Southern fiction. SA Cosby is an award winning author of fantasy, horror and crime fiction including the novel BLACKTOP WASTELAND which won the Los Angeles Times Book Award.

On this week's podcast, S.A. Cosby says that a writer friend once told him: “I think you're like the bard of broken men.” In Cosby's new novel, “Razorblade Tears,” the fathers of two married gay men who have just been murdered team up to track down the killers. Cosby says that the fathers — Ike, who's Black, and Buddy Lee, who's white — are familiar to him.“I grew up with men like Ike and Buddy Lee,” he says. “Maybe not necessarily violent men, but men who were emotionally closed off, who were unable to articulate or communicate their frailties, their feelings. I grew up in an environment where masculinity was all about presentation, was about being ‘tough,' whatever that means. So when I started out writing the book, I started with these two characters, because the people that I think need to read the book the most are the people like that that I know, the people like that who surround me every day. But even more than that, I fell in love with Ike and Buddy Lee because if these two men can change, then change is possible for anyone.”Dean Jobb visits the podcast to talk about his new book, “The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream: The Hunt for a Victorian Era Serial Killer.” The book recounts the crimes of Thomas Neill Cream, a Canadian obstetrician who killed an unknown number of people between the 1870s and 1892, most of them women from marginalized backgrounds.“There was a lot of madness in what he did, but also some calculating method,” Jobb says. “He never claimed insanity at any of his trials, so there was never any professional assessment of him. He almost seems to have bought into the idea, as one of his medical instructors said, that doctors are godlike; they stand between the living and the dead. And he just seems to have decided that his godlike powers, given to him as a doctor, would be used to decide who would live and who would die.”Also on this week's episode, Tina Jordan looks back at Book Review history as it celebrates its 125th anniversary; Elizabeth Harris has news from the publishing world; and Dwight Garner and Jennifer Szalai talk about books they've recently reviewed. Pamela Paul is the host. Here are the books discussed by the Times's critics this week:“Dear Miss Metropolitan” by Carolyn Ferrell“Democracy Rules” by Jan-Werner Müller

Buddy Lee Dobberteen grew up in a small town in Michigan. He got into playing guitar at a young age and was always fascinated with music but never really pursued it because he was too busy playing sports. He did an electrical internship all through school and after graduation began doing side gigs wiring houses but had always dreamed of something more. In early September of 2001, Buddy joined the Marine Corps and went in as an infantryman. In 2002 he was deployed to the Middle East and soon after participated in the Iraq war. Three tours later, Buddy got out of the Marines and was labeled 100% disabled. After a series of events, he started the nonprofit Pathfinders Outdoors: His Little Studio & Mentoring. His goal was to help fellow vets via mentoring, learning audio and music as well as hunting and fishing together. Buddy and his team have had over 300 Mentoring Sessions since January 2019 and continue to grow and help fellow vets who require help.
