Cohen Former Director of Retail Studies at the Columbia Business School, and Former CEO Sears Canada.Hudson's Bay, once Canada's proud retail institution, has descended into Chapter 11 restructuring. And the blunt truth is it's not because of recent trade tensions as the company proclaimed, but rather from years of financial neglect, unpredictable customer experiences, and questionable strategic moves. The department store's inconsistent merchandise assortments across different locations undermined The Bay's identity, leaving customers confused about what the retailer actually stood for. Join Shelley and retail veteran Mark Cohen as they discuss how CEO Richard Baker's real estate-focused leadership and lack of retail expertise have led to catastrophic outcomes, reflecting the danger of prioritizing deal-making over operational excellence. His ineptitude doesn't stop at Hudson's Bay. Saks Global is at risk of long-term survival. It's the perfect storm for Saks: The large luxe brands are not going to be bullied by Saks 90-day payment terms and Baker's financial engineering will give market share to Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's. For more strategic insights and compelling content, visit TheRobinReport.com, where you can read, watch, and listen to content from Robin Lewis and other retail industry experts, and be sure to follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter.

In The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light, the cultural historian William Irwin Thompson predicted the rise of a new form of knowledge building, a direly needed alternative to the Wissenshaft of standard science and scholarship. He called it Wissenskunst, "the play of knowledge in a world of serious data processors." Wissenskunst is pretty much what JF and Phil have been aspiring to do on Weird Studies since 2018, but in this episode they are joined by a master of the craft, the computational sociologist and physicist Jacob G. Willy welcomes Richard Baker. Baker is currently the governor, CEO, and executive chairman of Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), and is also the owner of National Realty and Development Corp (NRDC). In 2006, he acquired Lord & Taylor for $1.2 billion and served as its Chairman. He purchased Hudson's Bay in 2006 and took the company public in 2012, getting it listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The show starts with Richard emphasizing that “We're all born with what we're born with,” pointing out his innate ability to see things differently from a young age and his drive to go a different route. He believes that we need to maximize our strengths to build our self-confidence. Having studied hospitality at Cornell University, he thinks hospitality applies to all fields. As a natural people-pleaser, he aimed to change how real estate developers do business by focusing on customer service. Although his plans to acquire Toys R' Us fell through, he created NRDC. Being in the game got him the Lord & Taylor acquisition. “If you're always hanging out by the hoop and playing the game, then you'll make your share of baskets,” he says. He states that “We're not investors, we're value creators,” using intellectual leverage as a tool. The financial crisis only led him to pivot and maneuver in the right direction. Richard spotted an opportunity in Canada to turn it into a credit landscape, buying Hudson's Bay despite initial detractors. His previous knowledge of running a department store made it easier for him to make a choice and operate the company.
