Dale Trumbore is a celebrated composer and writer. If you don't believe me, check out her bio at daletrumbore.com. She's been praised by The Washington Post and The New York Times for her work, and it's no surprise to me. We used to be neighbors, and hearing her play the piano through the wall of our duplex, remains one of my most soothing memories. She joined the podcast to talk about her decision to not become a mother, which made me feel a lot less alone in making that decision for myself. We talked about societal pressures, weighing pros and cons, feeling guilty, feeling judged, feeling selfish, and finally feeling relieved, and excited for our childless futures. It's empowering. It's honest. It's EZ with friends. Press play! You can read more about Dale at https://www.daletrumbore.com/. Synopsis Following the death of a loved one, the American poet Barbara Crooker wrote, “How can we go on/knowing the end of the story?” The American composer Dale Trumbore attempted to answer that question with her haunting choral work entitled “How to Go On,” given its premiere performance on today's date in 2016 in Anaheim, California by the Choral Arts Initiative. Rather than setting the traditional Latin text of the Requiem Mass like Verdi, or passages from the Bible like Brahms, Trumbore crafted a kind of “secular requiem,” choosing texts by Crooker and two other contemporary American poets addressing fundamental questions of life, love, and loss. “I have moments of utter panic about my own mortality,” confessed Trumbore, “and I know many other people do as well, although we may not openly discuss or address our fears about death. Taken together, the seven poems of ‘How to Go On' recognize these fears while also cultivating a feeling of everything ultimately being at peace. Hopefully the music adds to that visceral feeling of reassurance. “ New Jersey native Dale Trumbore studied with the great choral composer Morten Lauridsen at the University of Southern California and her own vocal works are noted for what The New York Times described as her “soaring melodies and beguiling harmonies.” Music Played in Today's Program Dale Trumbore (b. 1987) – How to Go On (Choral Arts Initiative; Brandon Elliott, cond.) Composer Happy Hour - Presented by whateverandeveramen.

Welcome to Episode 4, and thank you so much for listening. I imagine that many of you listening to this episode, have also listened to the first three episodes. Evidently you agree. First time listeners - welcome! If you don't already have a drink, get one - you deserve it. In fact, if you follow us on social media (Twitter: @whateverchoir; Instagram: @whateverandeveramen) you can see recipes for the drinks shared by the guest for each episode. They have brought some fun stuff and that would be a great way to engage in the episode. Our guest for this episode is Dale Trumbore. I think I first became aware of Dale when I picked up a copy of her piece "The Whole Sea in Motion." At the time, it was far too advanced for the choirs I was conducting - but I quickly sensed that she was creating special music and knew that I would be programming her music in the near future. That was 2013. Fast forward to 2021 and Dale is one of the more popular and in demand composers around. She is also a very fine, and very accomplished writer. Her book "Staying Composed" is a must read for anyone creating art of any kind. We discuss everything from why California is wonderful to the perfect party music to the best way to set the word "yeasty" to music. As always, if you like what you hear - buy us a beer! How many times of you struggled to find the exact piece of repertoire for a concert? How many times have you thought you found the perfect piece only to discover the tessitura that sits in all the wrong places? Or there's a four-part TB divisi in a random 2 pages of the piece. Or all of the many other pervading themes that are a part of the struggle for finding repertoire to meet your ensemble's needs. This week's guest on the Choir Baton Podcast is Victoria Boler. Victoria walks us through how and why we can and should be arranging in the choral classroom. This episode also has my vulnerability level on 100% because I'm singing and improvising on the spot with her. Here's why you should listen to this episode even RIGHT NOW, as we don't know what choir will look like for the next couple months. With the exception of composer Dale Trumbore and her amazing forward thinking - there is not a composition out there yet for a choir amidst these times. NOW is the time to begin to dust off your composing and arranging skills and try your hand at making music that works for your choirs.  --------- Victoria Boler is a leading elementary general music educator and curriculum designer. In addition to general music, Victoria has taught orchestra, choir, and percussion ensembles. In an administrative role, Victoria has served as Fine Arts Coordinator, leading band, orchestra, choir, general music, and musical theater at the programmatic level. Victoria’s primary instruments are voice and percussion, and she has earned undergraduate degrees in both instrumental and vocal music education. With Orff certification in all 3 levels, Victoria is currently completing her Masters of Music in Music Education and her Kodaly training. She publishes general music curriculum and instructional materials at victoriaboler.com, where she serves thousands of educators in their journey to create a grounded and artistic music curriculum for their unique teaching scenarios. Victoria's lesson planning subscription, The Planning Binder, empowers teachers to know exactly what to teach, when to teach it, and what strategies to use. Inside the Planning Binder, you’ll find long-range plans like scope and sequences, as well as specific teaching activities in concept plans. Each month you’ll see new documents to jump-start your planning, as well as steps to apply the plan to your classroom. TEM189: Dale Trumbore Quotes This episode of TEM features my favorite quotes from my conversation with composer Dale Trumbore in TEM144. Quotes: “My idea of success as I defined it as I was 18 was ‘I will know I am successful when I am making my living as a composer' and that's shifted over the years as I mentioned before. I have eight piano students. I'm happy to have them. I'm happy to have a source of steady income.” “I love having the morning to do business things and the afternoon to do creative things. Again, that's what works for me. I know everyone's different. But once you find your own personal creative rhythm you should do everything in your power to make that possible and to create and carve out that space for yourself.” “That particular essay is also about not getting so attached to particular performers. Like, ‘oh if this one chorus just did my music I would feel like I made it. I'd feel like I was finally successful. I'd get a ton more commissions as a result. That might be true, but looking at my career, and looking at my friends' careers too, it is very rare that one single performance has that kind of effect.” “Feeling like you have any obligation to put anything on your website is a recipe for disaster I think. It's up to you completely how you structure your website and what you put on it and why.” "You do all this research and it might take five minutes. You don't have to dig deep into the history of what this ensemble has done. But you get a really good feeling for the kind of music that they do and then you look at your own catalog and you see what music you have that would be a good fit for them. An actual, real good fit. And then you say something like 'I think this piece would be a really good fit for you because I've noticed that you loved doing this piece' or 'you did a really beautiful performance of this piece and so I thought you might enjoy my piece." "I've found too that just labeling things when they come up is so helpful. Recognizing that something is a pattern and that it comes up every time and knowing that you can be like 'Oh, this is the day where I hate everything I've written and tomorrow or two days later it's gonna be fine again.' That helps you move through it, again, without attaching any additional stress or anxiety to that moment." "It's okay if things take time and they will take time. And if you set a very, very narrow, specific goal for yourself you're not very likely to succeed."
