Whitney George's music traverses the affective terrain between tragedy and ecstasy, fragility and strength, bringing together romantically delicate intimacy and the spectacular darkness of the macabre. Haunted by ghosts and/of love, George's operas, staged multimedia works, and chamber music coloristically explore the mysteries of irrationality, nightmare, and memory, sonically seeking lost objects and hidden subjects. Given George's theatrical inclinations and preoccupation with the tragic, she has turned again and again to opera as both a composer and conductor. Recently, George has been awarded a number of operatic commissions, premieres, and recognition: in 2017; the Elebash Award for her orchestration of Gideon's opera Fortunato, which premiered under George's baton in May 2019. In the same year; the commission of the two-act opera Princess Maleine by dell'Arte and the video opera Julie by New Camerata which was publicly released in 2020. This 2023 season, Fresh Squeezed commissions Fizz & Ginger, an immersive jazz experience, and the second operatic endeavor with libretitst Bea Goodwin. George is the artistic director and conductor of The Curiosity Cabinet, a chamber orchestra formed in 2009. She holds degrees from the California Institute of the Arts (2008), Brooklyn College (2010), and the CUNY Graduate Center (2021). Carrie Hennessey is a wayfinder through the deep, spiritual and technical discoveries of the voice. Early success in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions led to high expectations, but singing after trauma in her early 20s dismantled the ease in her voice and presence. A top artistic mentor once reviewed, ‘This is not the same singer I heard 2 years ago. Go back home', and a famous singer/coach exclaimed, ‘If you'd just sing like Renata Tebaldi…' Hennessey left, losing her identity and voice. Ms. Hennessey has since found her true voice and created a wildly unique and energized career path in theater, opera, symphony work, recital, and education, wearing with pride the hats of trauma-informed teacher and facilitator, producer, singer, actor, innovator and writer. She is known for her soaring voice and richly nuanced characters onstage, and has sung all over the world. Notable highlights include debuting as Kát'á in Kát'á Kabanová at the Cal Shakes Amphitheater, As Blanche Du Bois in Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire. Carrie captivated audiences in an immersive production of The Stronger and as Elle in La Voix Humaine in NYC. Her bold and nuanced interpretation of Strauss' Vier Letzte Lieder resonated among the redwood trees with Music in the Mountains Orchestra. She then channeled the physical comedy of Carol Burnett and fearless vocalism and sense of humor of Beverly Sills in the world premiere ballet by Darrell Grand Moultrie “On the Rocks, Please!” Carrie lights a fire in those around her - teaching music education through lectures, workshops, Master Classes, and is joyfully dedicated to guiding all around her to find their true authentic voice in the world. Currently, Carrie is developing her one woman show about her life in singing, quitting for 12 years post trauma and creating from nothing a versatile and vibrant career steeped in authenticity. Opera Now Magazine in their article, “Written in the Stars” profiled Hilary Ginther in May 2016 as one of ten young American singers intent on taking the opera world by storm, calling attention to her “substantial and richly colored instrument”. This was followed by her Philadelphia Orchestra debut in Bernstein's MASS under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, which was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon and released in March 2018, in commemoration of the composer's centenary. Ask yourself, "Am I bringing my best self to each collaboration?" In any collaboration when you start working with somebody new, I want you to think, "Wow, it's really an honor to get to work with this person. How can we both achieve our goals together through this piece, through this music, and then also honor the composer's intentions, the composer's creativity, and our shared musical imagination?" “So asking about logistics and style really help you know whether this is the right situation or if you're just going to be studying with someone who might be fantastic at what they do… but the ‘what they do' is not the right thing for you. And, vice verse. You're not going to be a great student in their studio if you're expecting different things but you haven't communicated about what those expectations are. This is an important time to communicate together clearly and effectively about ‘what are our shared expectations?'” In this Micro Action Monday episode, Megan discusses the types of questions to ask before beginning a relationship with a voice teacher. “You are inhabiting information that may or may not be useful to you anymore. I want you to interrogate what you think the rules of the game are. That you can only “make it' if you follow these rules, if you do all of the things on this checklist, then you'll get what you want. I would love for you to dig into that and ask yourself, ‘Is that true?' As your micro action today, I want you to identify all of the rules that you have come into contact with over time. Then, I want you to take the fattest red marker you can find and cross them out. "Use this as a template for asking better and deeper questions. Use this as a template for listening without defensiveness - because you really do want to actually hear the answers that people will give you. Recognize that you're growing by taking an interest in their inner world. You're saying, “I care. I want to keep working together so I'm going to invest in these deeper than surface level questions.” Be open. Be inquisitive. You got this!" People want to be sure they're making a good choice in hiring you, buying from you, or commissioning you. Customer objections are the concerns that a potential client, commissioner, presenter, or director has which cause them to hesitate (at best) and abandon (at worst) a project or contract with you. This Micro Action Monday episode explores some of the ways that you can think through customer objections in your professionally creative life to book more gigs, get more students, or sell your offers to your ideal clients. “Divas, if you are on social media, I want you to recognize the powerful tool that it is and avoid the mindless scrolling and self comparison trap that can come with it. Social is an incredibly powerful tool, but it can also be a very negative experience. Here's one way to use social, especially Instagram, to use it for your best self - for your best life.” Do you like these micro action episodes? “Make a list: these are all of the things I'm actively engaged in that are not urgent and not important. Then, practice letting them go. You might be convincing yourself that they are urgent or that they are important. That is sabotaging what you really want to do with that time. I don't want you to hear me saying that you should be a “creative business robot” - that's not what the Eisenhower Matrix is about. We sometimes allow non-urgent and non-important things to take over because we think somehow it makes us more worthy of the gold stars but I promise you that it doesn't…” That and more in this Micro Action Monday episode on Studio Class. As creative professionals, having your own KPIs (key performance indicators) can be the difference between wild insecurity/uncertainty and feeling like you're on your own path - you're in your lane. I promise you that having these things will level out some of those ups and downs we feel because you'll feel like you're doing your work. Not somebody else's work. Not somebody else's dream. Your dream. Your goals. Your work. I want you to set up your own KPIs so that you can look at the progress you've made toward your own strategic goals. Do you like these micro action episodes?
