We had the pleasure of interviewing Reyna Roberts over Zoom video!Breakout country artist and showstopping performer Reyna Roberts released her debut album Bad Girl Bible, Vol 1 on Friday September 8th (via EMPIRE Nashville). This new album follows the success of previously released singles off the album “Country Club” “One Way Street,” and “Louisiana” which have seen a great response from press and fans alike, with Wonderland Magazine stating, “Roberts' heartfelt lyrics capture the universal theme of unrequited love, striking a chord with listeners worldwide.” “Country Club” specifically is going viral across socials with posts on Hollywood Unlocked, The Neighborhood Talk and more! Focus track off the album “Miranda” was inspired by Miranda Lambert, Johnny Cash and Beyonce, with those influences also being seen in the music video for “Miranda”. Bad Girl Bible, Vol 1 is already receiving rave reviews from press with, American Songwriter describing Roberts debut album as “songwriter salvation”.Coinciding with the release of her debut album Reyna is being featured on billboards in Nashville and in New York City where she has been in town for New York Fashion Week attending shows. On Saturday Reyna made her debut at New York Fashion Week walking in the Utierre fashion show at the Dreamland After Dark show at Sony Hall. The fiery singer-songwriter has also recently partnered with The General Insurance, Amazon Prime, Grammy Museum, CMT, CMA, Amazon Music, Bud Light, Tennessee Titans, Stella Rosa, NASCAR and more! When asked about the release of her debut album Bad Girl Bible, Vol 1, Reyna said, “Bad Girl Bible, Vol. 1 is the first half of my debut double album. This is my story of being in love, on the run, my journey through Hell, and ultimately God's salvation. I'm excited about this debut album because people will get to see a full picture of who I truly am. I'm a writer on every song and I also co-produced many of the songs as well, because I had a specific vision for each one- that also included detailed visuals. I spent countless days and nights going over every detail for this album. My goal was to make sure there was personality and character throughout the entire project, so the audience can experience my journey on every level. This album is the truest reflection of my sound as an artist. Even though you hear some country trap and country pop early on. You feel like you're on the run with me, and my sound becomes more outlaw country the darker the journey becomes. This is my Old Testament.”Roberts continues blazing a trail toward success, receiving high praise from the industry and her peers. Roberts has opened for Reba McEntire, toured with country artist Jamey Johnson, and has performed with Luke Combs. Her music is “hard-hitting and anthemic” (Rolling Stone, Rolling Stone Country), “lively and energetic” (Billboard), and she has created songs for ESPN, Apple TV +, NFL, and Hallmark Channel. She has been featured in People, New York Times, Taste of Country, The Boot, Music Now, Wide Open Country, and many other publications, demonstrating that her music resonates with fans and critics alike. Next to a small village in Bosnia there is what some believe is the world's oldest and largest pyramid. Sitting there forgotten for millennials until one man discovered them again. Or did he? Our host Fredrik continues the mission to discover what is genuine, fake, and somewhere in between on the TV-show Ancient Aliens. But in this episode we're going to do a little side tour and peek into the Bosnian Pyramids. This is a little shorter episode where we break away from the TV-show and investigate a new phenomenon that was all the rage a decade ago. We will dive deep into who created the origin, is it really real and what is the evidence behind it. This also means that we will have to get to know Semir Osmanagic a lot better. If you're not already familiar with this name you will be at the end of this episode. We also talk a little about real European pyramids and a little bit about modern Bosnia. Come with and learn how a modern myth was created. On today's episode of the Exit Podcast, we are talking with Chris Gladwin, the Co-Founder and CEO of Ocient. Prior to that, he had multiple successful exits, including the sale of Cleversafe, a data storage and distribution company. With plenty of venture backed partners, Chris helped to raise over $100million to grow the company. His hard work would pay off when the company sold for over $1billion to IBM. His other two exits were for Cruise Technologies, a dominant developer of Wireless Thin Clients, and MusicNow, the world's first music subscription service. Always on the cutting edge, Chris shares with us how he started, grew, and sold each company. Team Building Still thinking about how to make data storage better, Chris founded Cleversafe. He built upon the techniques used in wireless communications to create a new and improved method to store and distribute the world's data. When it came to growing the team for this core information technology company, Chris says the challenge was that it was very resource intensive. In order to hire the right people that were capable of growing this technology, Chris had to raise a lot of money. He ended up raising $100million and focused on finding his team. At the time, Motorola was collapsing and a lot of people with the right experience were looking for new jobs. Chris grabbed a lot of those people and brought them on board at Cleversafe. In addition, he brought on people he knew from his prior experiences in the space and also tapped into college recruiting. By the time IBM acquired Cleversafe they had 250 employees. 100% Conversion Rate The main KPI Cleversafe focused on was how many qualified opportunities they were winning. Chris says they eventually got into the zone and for every potential client they got into the pilot, they were converting 100% of them. With these being multi-million dollar orders, Chris knew they had made it. The company was doing very well and Chris had no intention to sell when IBM approached him. Continuing to pursue them, IBM ultimately made an offer that Chris couldn't refuse. With their initial approach in March 2019, by November of that year the sale would be final. Chris says the company's investors and employees didn't even know of the acquisition until the day before. Everyone involved was very pleased though, as the $1billion sales price meant a large financial upside for everyone. Chris recognizes that there is a lot of opportunity to not treat employees right in the sale of a company, but he's very proud of what they were able to do for everyone. Knowing What You Know Now, What Would You Tell Yourself Ten Years Ago? Chris's newest company, Ocient, is very similar to Cleversafe, so there are plenty of cheats he could tell himself, but he says he wouldn't. Chris believes it's the challenge that drives the satisfaction. He also does everything in a way that, even if it fails, he would have still done it because he doesn't do it for the money, he does it because it's his craft. So, he would tell himself only that he needs to figure it out for himself. For More Information To learn more about Chris's newest endeavor, visit www.ocient.com. As they work to create the largest data analysis systems, they're always looking for talented individuals to join the team. If you think you'd be a good fit, consider applying on their website. -- The Exit—Presented By Flippa: A 30-minute podcast featuring expert entrepreneurs who have been there and done it. Four-time-startup-founder Chris Gladwin is a Chicago guy, and he's spent much of his career bucking the notion that game-changing tech solutions can only be nurtured to market maturity on the coasts. But if you ask him, it's not lightning-in-a-bottle moments that have propelled his journey; it's the idea that successful companies are built in increments, over what he calls “person centuries,” by constantly lending an ear to your customers and earnestly addressing their concerns and needs. In his talk with Jesse, Chris talks about his journey as an IT customer and deliverer of user-friendly enterprise solutions. He describes why IT systems are becoming more complex, and why the need for adept IT talent isn't likely to lessen any time soon. He reveals the ambitious plan behind P33, the organization he started to transform Chicago into a tech hub. He describes in detail how businesses can listen to the customer at scale. And he leaves us with a look at the future of data analysis - a future he's helping to write as CEO of Ocient. In 2004, Chris founded Cleversafe, which became the largest and most strategic object storage vendor in the world (according to IDC). The technology he started generated over 1,000 patents granted or filed. Prior to Cleversafe, Chris was the Founder and CEO of startups MusicNow and Cruise Technologies, and led product strategy for Zenith Data Systems. Ocient co-founder Chris Gladwin joins this episode to take us down his entrepreneurial journey, starting as a child born and raised in Ohio (7:07) to his days at MIT (14:02), including the internship that kicked off his entire career. He dives into his first few jobs: Evaluating information technology products for Martin Marietta (now Locheed Martin) (21:34) and then building ethernet into portable PCs at Zenith Data Systems (24:07). His first startup, Cruise Technologies, stemmed from his time at Zenith, developing Wireless Thin Clients (29:00) from which he shares lessons learned in building respectful relationships with investors (32:19). He then goes on to explain how those lessons enabled him to raise money for his next startup, a music subscription service called MusicNow, which he founded in 1999 (38:47). Yes, he founded this company just a few years before iTunes, and yes, that's a frustrating subject Gladwin discusses as well (44:15). However, his experience with MusicNow created a natural bridge into his next company, Cleversafe, the largest data storage system in the world (45:50), which he sold to IBM for $1.3 billion in 2015 (55:00). Finally, he explains the purpose for starting his current venture, Ocient, where he's building new technology to analyze the world's largest sets of data, faster than ever before (56:12). Composer Steven Bryant's music for winds has quickly become part of the standard repertoire. As the son of a music educator, he is a strong supporter of music education and he joins me from the mountains of Austria to talk about his early influences, his music, and his career to this point. Topics: Steven’s background as the son of a high school band director and how that influenced his path to becoming a composer. The story of BCM International and Steve’s early success with Chester Leaps In and the stories of Dusk and Ecstatic Waters. The value of being self-published and the nuts and bolts about a career as a successful composer. Writing music for band and electronics. Links: Steven Bryant Mid Europe Band Festival Bryant: Chester Leaps In Bryant: Dusk Bryant: Ecstatic Waters Bryant: Hummingbrrd Bryant: Concerto for Wind Ensemble John Cage: As Slow as Possible Biography: Steven Bryant’s music is chiseled in its structure and intent, fusing lyricism, dissonance, silence, technology, and humor into lean, skillfully-crafted works that enthrall listeners and performers alike. His seminal work Ecstatic Waters, for wind ensemble and electronics, has become one of the most performed works of its kind in the world, receiving over 250 performances in its first five seasons. Recently, the orchestral version was premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra to unanimous, rapturous acclaim. The son of a professional trumpeter and music educator, he strongly values music education, and his creative output includes a number of works for young and developing musicians. John Corigliano states Bryant’s “compositional virtuosity is evident in every bar” of his 34’ Concerto for Wind Ensemble. Bryant’s first orchestral work, Loose Id for Orchestra, hailed by composer Samuel Adler as “orchestrated like a virtuoso,” was premiered by The Juilliard Symphony and is featured on a CD release by the Bowling Green Philharmonia on Albany Records. Alchemy in Silent Spaces, commissioned by James DePreist and The Juilliard School, was premiered by the Juilliard Orchestra in May 2006. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW series featured his brass quintet, Loose Id, conducted by Cliff Colnot, on its 2012-13 concert series. Notable upcoming projects include an orchestral work for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (April, 2018), an evening-length dramatic work for the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, a choral work for the BBC Singers (July, 2017), a work for FivE for Euphonium Quartet and wind ensemble (2019), and a large work to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the University of Illinois Bands. Recent works include a Concerto for Alto Saxophone for Joseph Lulloff and the Michigan State University Wind Symphony (winner of the 2014 American Bandmasters Sousa Ostwald Award), and a Concerto for Trombone for Joseph Alessi and the Dallas Wind Symphony. Other commissions have come from the Gaudete Brass Quintet (Chicago), cellist Caroline Stinson (Lark Quartet), pianist Pamela Mia Paul, the Amherst Saxophone Quartet (funded by the American Composers Jerome Composers Commissioning Program), the University of Texas – Austin Wind Ensemble, the US Air Force Band of Mid-America, the Japanese Wind Ensemble Conductors Conference, and the Calgary Stampede Band, as well as many others. Steven studied composition with John Corigliano at The Juilliard School, Cindy McTee at the University of North Texas, and Francis McBeth at Ouachita University, trained for one summer in the mid-1980s as a break-dancer (i.e. was forced into lessons by his mother), was the 1987 radio-controlled car racing Arkansas state champion, has a Bacon Number of 1, and has played saxophone with Branford Marsalis on Sleigh Ride. He resides in Durham, NC with his wife, conductor Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant (Duke University).
Chris Gladwin knows how to stay ahead of the curve. His digital music distribution service, MusicNow, launched five years ahead of iTunes and over a decade prior to Spotify. His tablet came out twenty years before the iPad, just as his company Cleversafe, a cloud storage company, burst onto the scene well before “cloud” technology became a trendy topic. Now, Chris and his new company, Ocient, are building solutions for data-analytics problems that companies will face a few years down the road. We talked to Chris to hear his thoughts on what it takes to innovate, disrupt, and promote a powerful vision to tackle problems before they've even arisen.
Joining us this week is Doug Perkins. Doug has commissioned and premiered over 100 pieces and works with such composers as David Lang, Steve Reich, Paul Lansky, John Luther Adams, Nathan Davis, Larry Polansky, Christian Wolff, Glenn Kotche, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Tristan Perich. He founded the So Percussion and the Meehan/ Perkins Duo, and performs regularly with Signal, eighth blackbird, the Chicago Symphony’s MusicNOW, and others. “I have no plan b on backing down on my dreams.”Frank Palangi lives by that saying with his career and it shines through his work. He fuels his own feeding frenzy of modern rock with a solid sound like any 1970's muscle car (that he hopes to own someday). His old school sense is a key part of his personally and way of life. At the core, he is a singer/songwriter with a gritty bass rock voice pouring his heart and soul into lyrics based on life experiences and subject matter. Portraying a positive image to his fans, it's fresh to see an artist who respects himself. It's exciting to see he's not afraid to take chances and living outside the box. From being a multi-instrumentalist and constantly writing and creating, his creativity, drive and passion to acheive his dreams is always growing. With a discography ranging from 4 demo records in Frank's teen years to his current independent EP records (Frank Palangi EP, I Am Ready EP) and new singles that include “Hope”, "Falling too", Palangi fans know they can look forward to new material being developed. What could be the next step for Palangi???"It has been a blessing. My music has a special connection with the fans who love it most. I've been told it's helped them through hard times in their lives and that I have been a positive inspiration to them. I believe there are tough challenges in our of lives that we must face and being able for my music to have that effect, it's all I could ask for out of it. The personal interaction with fans is so important to me, so I enjoy the stories I hear. Growing up, I dealt with childhood medical issues and learning to adapt and overcome challenges that somehow let me reroute illness into a strength and gave me the passion, determination and will not give up. ” Frank says.Palangi continues to create new buzz with a growing fan base sharing the stages across the North East U.S with regional and national acts from 3 Doors Down, Aaron Lewis (Staind), FUEL, TRAPT, Powerman 5000, Candlelight Red, Young Guns, HURT, HEDPE to Prospect Hill, Veer Union, Bad Axis, Jess Malin (Former D-Generation singer), Sirsy, Deluka, Silversyde, IM5, Weaving the Fate and including festivals like the UPROAR winning the 2013 Ernie Ball Saratoga, NY opening for Alice in Chains/Jane's Addiction. Gaining national press with GuitarWorld, Revolver, Music Now, Young Celebrity, The Examiner, Mi2n.com, Top40-Charts.com and local Fox23 News, News Channel 13 (NY), Q103 radio, The Chronicle, Post Star, Spotlight News and more. Jason Herskowitz is a self-proclaimed "music/tech nerd with a bad social media habit." At a young age he instantly became a diehard music fan, and a lover of all things tech. His career went on to marry those two loves. He started as an artist manager and owner of a small indie record label. More recently, Jason served as Director of Products for AOL Music (Winamp, AOL Radio, MusicNow), the VP of Product for TotalMusic, the Sony / Universal Music joint venture, and then LimeWire. So he knows a thing or two about digital music. Digital Music Monthly’s Kenn Richards sat down with him to discuss the past, present and future of the streaming and subscription based music. And topics like: - how connectivity on phones completely changed how we consume music when we went from EDGE to 4G - whether windowing music is a good idea - the ability to access your music on one platform instead of it being locked behind each music provider Plug in and take a listen to May’s Digital Music Monthly.
Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement Born in Stockholm, the DJ/producer has spent the last decade working relentlessly to bring his amalgamation of funky house and tribal techno to a global platform. Although Swedish by birth, Christian spent much of his youth in Frankfurt, Germany, where his father was stationed as a pilot, and this turn fate played an unexpected role in determining his musical tastes. It was the early eighties and the music at the time was early electro, soul, funk and late disco music. Groups like The SOS Band, Newcleus, funk bands like Cameo and tracks like Fade To Grey by Visage had a huge influence on Christian. Although his older brother and sister would bring home the dj mix tapes from the big clubs, with music from the pre house days. This is what Christian turned on to. By the time Christian had turned fourteen, he looked old enough to get into the clubs himself and became, by his own admission, "a manic train spotter." Frequenting Sven Vaths Dorian Grey residency, this club had a big effect on Christian. He went to the clubs for the music and to check out the DJ's. If Dorian Grey was Smiths introduction to the realms of electronic music, then it would be his experiences in another of dance music's capital cities that would help mould and solidify Christians deeply entrenched love for club music. Moving to New York in 1989, Christian discovered that, running parallel to its high profile house community, the city that never sleeps also had a thriving techno scene. All the early techno clubs had started in New York, with Joey Beltram at The Limelight and soon afterwards Jeff Mills. After finishing high school in 1992, Christian moved to Washington DC to study international business at university and, in his spare time started DJing. He never dreamt DJing would become his career. Smith nonetheless started playing at big raves in Washington and Baltimore, spinning to audiences of between 500 and 3,000 people. Lets not forget, this was the early nineties, and his choice of music was somewhat different to his trademark funky techno and house fusion, as it was the hard trance and techno days. He was playing tracks on labels like Harthouse, R&S and Music Man. Unsurprisingly, given the nature of dance music's loosely defined early nineties status, Smiths first record Overdose as Neuromancer, came out on in 1992 on a label called Music Now, only for the imprint to release a follow up record by none other than BTs Embrace The Future. Back then Christian was already making house infused techno, probably less structured and not as well produced as nowadays. Indeed, Christians earliest DJing experiences also played a definitive role in his future work, as he first met regular collaborator John Selway in 1993. Selway, who was playing the same rave circuit as Christian at this time was also working in New Yorks renowned Satellite Records store, the place where Smith, who was still based in Washington, would order his tunes from. John and Christian connected musically and therefore decided to hook up and make some tracks and the Smith and Selway sound was born. In 1994, Christian set up the Tronic label, and, despite releasing three well-received records, put the label on hold until three years later, in 1997. Christian put the label on hold, as he was still a full time university student in Washington. By '97 he felt really inspired by DJing and the music that this prompted him to get working seriously with his label TRONIC. However, on completing his studies, Christian started to go to New York more frequently to collaborate with John Selway. Subsequently putting out collaborative EPs on Dave Angels Rotation label and Primate, Smiths own 1997 release, Goldrush the fourth release on Tronic also caused a serious reaction, this was the point everything took off. Tronic became a popular label and Goldrush got licensed all over the place. It was a really hard disco house tune that DJs like Sneak picked up on and it was also the first time a lot of people reacted to one of his releases. DJs like Carl Cox and Dave Angel, people who were my idols in the early days really supported it. It did so well that every month Christian had to press up more copies! Back in Stockholm, Smith noticed that the demand for his tightly mixed, three decks DJing had increased and was booked to play all over Europe and beyond. In an interesting parallel development to Christians heightened profile, the latter part of the nineties saw Swedish producers like Adam Beyer, Joel Mull and Cari Lekebusch also attain an international following. From 1997 to 1999, the Swedish sound was really hyped. Christian comes from a different background, from a funk and soul background. A point Christian feels strongly about, and is quick to detach himself from any notions of purism. Adamant that he was listening to house before techno, he also points out that, way back in 1994, when he set up Tronic, he encountered some resistance from his distributors because he wanted to release material that was somewhere in between house and techno. The distributors advised to produce/release house or techno as it would sell better, but something in between wasn’t going to work," Christian feels that history has proved him right. As much as Christian dislikes the term, Tronic was one of the first tech-house labels, music that house and techno DJs could play; Christian calls his style housey techno! Despite his newfound success, Christian didn't rest on his laurels, and, for rest of the nineties, he focused on DJing, producing and remixing as much as possible. Releasing more EPs on Tronic, Intec and Primevil, the Swedish DJ says that though one of his releases, Vanguard caught the attention and support of BBC Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong, he had to keep working as hard as ever. The really big crossover records like Move!, on Intec and the releases on labels like Rotation and Intec opened up his work to a lot of people. While there's no doubt that Christians distinctive work injected a much-needed sense of funk back into techno, he made it accessible to a wider audience. His DJing is of an exceptionally high standard; Smiths willingness to travel to literally every country in the globe has been another determining factor in his ascendance. Christian very much enjoys Asia and Eastern Europe as his favorite new places to play in. On a recent South East Asia tour, successful dates were achieved in South Korea, Kuala Lumpur and Ministry Of Sound in Bangkok. Japan is a place were Christian has a large following due to the rocking sets at Womb in Tokyo. While Smiths releases ensured his bookings continued to soar, the Swedish DJ/producer identifies the release of his first major mix CD, Tronic Treatment as another turning point in his career. Weighing in at twenty eight tracks and recorded live in Australia on three decks, the smooth mix moves from funky house through to dubby, rolling tech-house, into pulsating techno. In fact, as things get faster, his selection becomes more varied, with the brooding electro of Umeks Zeta Reticula, the dark bass powered tones of Adam Beyers Remainings and Deetrons A1 before ending with the deep, Detroit stylings of James Ruskins mix of Metier. It’s one of the most compelling, hand raising, foot stamping interpretations of modern house and techno of recent years, and its no surprise that Christians profile was raised by the mix. His sense of diversity and unwillingness to adhere to one dimension is an ethic Christian believes is inherent in the worlds finest DJs. Christian was most inspired by Carl Cox and Laurent Garnier. Although both DJ’s are quite different what Christian saw in Carl was the ability to mix continuously between three turntables, and create that musical fusion. Special Thanks to Hugo B & Christian Smith!!!!!!
