On this Jeff Rona interview: Jeff gets in-depth and personal, sharing his journey to the top, and it definitely wasn't easy. Getting turned on to soundtracks and the career and musical doors this opened… how he got session work and ultimately ghostwriting for movies. Starting and growing his Music Library, Liquid Cinema… Types of music that get licensed most… when you're most “qualified” to do pretty much anything… Cool stories about working with Hans Zimmer, Barry Levinson, Maurice White, Don Ellis (very cool!), Jon Hassell, Brian Eno, and others… How he markets his production company, KEY things you need to know about working with and forming healthy and productive relationships with producers, directors, and music supervisors… Questions to ask that help you determine how to write your scores. A terrible tragedy his parents dealt with, low points in his life and how he dealt with them. AWESOME convo, super sincere, tons of insight into the licensing business! Jeff Rona has fascinated me ever since he first appeared in Keyboard Magazine with his “The Reel World” column. It was a time when music-for-film was becoming interesting for tech-savvy musicians, and his writing fueled a lot of people's interest in that work. With a background that includes working with Mark Isham and Hans Zimmer, Jeff has been in the mix for some of the greatest soundtracks in the last quarter century. In our discussion, we review his background in school (with The Dartmouth System!), programming time with Roland, playing with Jon Hassell, working with some amazing producers and then moving into film music. We also get into some of his techniques, how he likes to use particular kinds of hardware, and how he puts together the palette for a film score. We also talk about his solo work (as well as an upcoming release), and learn a bit about what he is doing in games and TV. We are also very excited about a third edition of The Reel World (the book) which he is wrapping up for upcoming release. You can learn about all of this, and more, at his website: https://jeffrona.com You can also see all of the soundtracks that he's been credited for on his IMDB page: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0006258/. Sheesh, what a list! Enjoy! Transcription available at http://www.darwingrosse.com/AMT/transcript-0363.html Exclusive extra content on the Patron page: https://www.patreon.com/darwingrosse

If you like music and film as much as I do, then I'm positive you're going to enjoy the conversation I had with film composer, musician and producer Jeff Rona on today's episode. Jeff is one of the most sought after and highly regarded film composers and musicians working in Hollywood today. He has scored the music and been a musician for films including Traffic, Black Hawk Down, White Squall as well as Mission Impossible AND he just released a fantastic new electronic record called VAPOR which is available now on all streaming platforms. Jeff shares stories about how he first got into music and how his curiosity and passion for synthesizers led him towards his first gig working with Roland. Jeff talks about his creative process and what drew him to film scoring where he's gone on to collaborate with well known composers including Hans Zimmer and Mark Isham. I ask Jeff about the inspiration behind his new record and we touch on some of the differences between scoring for film and self-producing a record. We talk about how our culture consumes music and we talk about the impact social media and the pandemic have both had on music and film. Be sure to find Jeff on IG @jeffronamuzik and be sure to check out his new record. Jeff Rona has seen it and done it all in Hollywood. From working with Hans Zimmer on scores such as Mission:Impossible III, and director Ridley Scott on White Squall, to iconic TV scores for influential shows Homicide: Life on The Street, Chicago Hope & Profiler, his experience in creating the soundtrack to incredible storytelling is among the most impressive of any modern composer. Add in his hugely successful diversions into documentaries, including Generation Iron (and it's sequel), and video games, such as his award winning soundtrack for last year's Devil May Cry 5 for Capcom, it's clear that we'd need an entire podcast episode in itself devoted to just reading out Jeff's credits! Not only that, Jeff has devoted himself to educating and enlightening new and aspiring composers, with his best selling books 'The Reel World', which to this day prove to be an excellent primer for anyone wondering what it takes to write music for media in the modern age. In this exclusive Masterclass with MYT's Paul Nolan, Jeff gives all the advice you need if you're an electronic music producer, and looking to diversify into music for Film, TV & Games. In the last episode of our Quarantine Stories series, composer and host Jeff Rona discusses where we go from here as the world re-opens. States and cities across the U.S. are handling it differently, some with very little guidance and others with clear health requirements to be met. Still, there is a lot of confusion as to how to proceed safely with our favorite activities while living indefinitely with COVID-19.What will a post-COVID world look like? Every place from schools to restaurants to sporting events will be affected. Our new habits of distancing and wearing masks will have to continue for a while, but there is hope with some promising early results from a new vaccine - and help from some innovative entrepreneurs.
In dark and dangerous times, we're confronted with depressing and painful emotions. Irrationally, when we consciously immerse ourselves in fear and dread, we can emerge stronger. Music has mysterious restorative powers that come from the emotional confrontation with deep and challenging feelings. The Ancient Greeks called it...catharsis. At the other end of the emotional spectrum, in dark times we crave light and hope—balm for battered souls. Here music brings beauty and peace, inspiration and joy. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey in the fragile lightscape of the psyche, from dark, to translucent, to luminous—on a program called TRANSLUCENT MUSIC. Featuring LISA GERRARD & JEFF RONA, ELENI KARAINDROU, ARVO PÄRT, VALENTIN SILVESTROV, and KARL JENKINS. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Cody Matthew Johnson is a multi-media composer, music producer, sound designer, and multi-instrumentalist. He is credited on scores for TNT's “Claws”, Sony's PSN debut series “Powers”, and a variety of feature films and documentaries.Johnson first caught Capcom's attention with his remixes of classic Capcom and Marvel character theme songs for “Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite”, including “Devil May Cry 3”, “Spider-Man”, “Captain America”, “Mega Man”, and “Ghosts n' Goblins.”In this episode, we continue our exploration some of the music from Devil May Cry 5 - the latest in the Devil May Cry video game franchise directed by Hideaki Itsuno. In episode 73, we heard from composer Jeff Rona and his work on the piece, "Crimson Tide" representing one of game's demon hunters, "V," and now we hear from Cody Matthew Johnson who shares his story about the new theme for another of the game's demon hunters "Dante."Cody Matthew Johnson talks about how he came onto the project and what it was like to write music for a character that he had previously remixed. He describes how he approached writing his piece for a series which had already established a strong musical history. Like Rona, he talks about the difference in how the music is used in the game itself as opposed to the piece on the soundtrack. United by fate and a thirst for vengeance, these demon hunters will have to face their demons if they hope to survive. In this episode, Jeff Rona talks about the challenge he faced in writing a distinct theme for one of the main characters of DEVIL MAY CRY 5, called "V," and how that theme is presented and used very differently in the game versus in the soundtrack release. Early on he composed for dance, theater, experimental media, galleries and contemporary concert venues around the world using both traditional musicians and cutting-edge technologies. He became an in-demand studio musician, arranger, sound designer, synthesist and music programmer in Los Angeles & New York, most notably with Philip Glass on several film and live projects and with film composer Hans Zimmer. He worked as a musical collaborator on numerous films & records before landing his first solo composing project, scoring the groundbreaking television series Homicide:Life On The Street for director Barry Levinson.
