As a learning community, we want to share some of our best resources with you, let you get to know our team a little better and give you a peek into what we're learning. We hold a shared belief that, especially in a context where the pace of change is so rapid, ongoing learning that is fed by curiosity about what's happening in our ministry context, is an essential way of being. In this episode, we've gathered a handful of our teammembers toogther to talk about what we learned last year, to share a resource that will be helpful to our listeners, and to let us in on what they want to learn this year.  Trisha Taylor Learning to see her autopilot and intentionally disrupt it to "live more consciously, more thoughtfully, more awake." Two tools that have helped Trisha do this have been journalling and a "professional who knows how to hold space and listen." Don't Look Up [movie] Aundrea Baker Learned about emotions, the science behind emotions, and practiced "allowing myself in certain situations to feel the feelings and pass through them and get to the other side." Two books were primary for me in this learning, one was Emotional Agility by Susan David, and the other one was, It's Not Always Depression by Hilary Jacobs Hendel. Mac McCarthy  Over the past year Mac has been learning "how to process pain in ministry" and setting appropriate boundaries.  Two resources that have helped Mac work through this learning has been a coach and resources from Dan White Jr. and The Kineo Center This year he is planning to do a deep dive with his team into a leadership model that includes both men and women working together using Better Together Tim McGee This past year Tim has focused a lot of his learning on the power of clarity on communication and design.  "Clear is Kind" by Brene Brown A book that has helped Tim process and practice this over the past year was Strategy is Your Words by Mark Pollard Dawn Bird This past year Dawn has been learning to be compassionate with herself around patterns in some of her closest relationships.  Two resources that have helped Dawn explore this has been an episode of the We Can Do Hard Things podcast titled Breaking Cycles & Reparenting Yourself with Dr. Becky Kennedy and the book Good Inside by Dr. Becky Kennedy Hello, Molly! [memoir] Victor Chiao Victor said this past year he has been learning how to practice courage and draw from his guiding principles in the face of anxious situations. And while he says he didn't have any tangible resources he offered these thoughts, "find others with a shared vision, a community that fosters safety, that allows you...to lean into those areas of discomfort and to have a chance to choose courage." Another way he is planning to lean into discomfort is by up Jiujitsu this year.  Jim Herrington This past year Jim has been deepening his learning around trauma and exploring the connections between trauma and family systems.  A couple resources Jim mentioned in the episode were,   In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Mate M.D., The Wisdom of Trauma by Gabor Mate M.D., and Amazing Place Family Caregiver Support Resources Thank you for listening. America is burned out. Between the stress of the pandemic, growing polarization and declining trust in institutions, many people are near their breaking point. The feeling is particularly acute for those who have traditionally been society's bridge builders — teachers, health care workers, faith leaders — as they increasingly find themselves in the cross hairs of our divisions.Dan White Jr. was a pastor in New York for nearly 20 years until the stress of trying to mend the chasms within his church led to his physical collapse. In this episode, I talk to Dan White about what it's like burning out of ministry and how to cultivate healthier rhythms to prevent this from happening (again). Part of the problem is the internet and social media. Our prefrontal contexes never rest! We're constantly bombarded with stuff to process. And COVID only exacerbated this problem. During COVID, many churches played into the consumeristic mindset of people by producing MORE content, more sermons, more stuff for people to consume. But now that the COVID dust has settled, many people aren't coming back to church. Why is this? How can we “get people back?” Or--is that even the right question to ask? Dan has planted and pastored in rural, suburban, and urban churches for the last 20+ years. In this episode: We have been subtly tricked into believing that fear is the voice we should listen to. We have become enemies of one another, champions of causes over people. What if we found new purpose for life and we shut out the fear and lived by love? (Article contains affililate links. This means that when you click a link and make a purchase, I might receive a small comission from that purchase.) Inspired Life I read a book recently that really opened my eyes to something that had become a habit for me, and it made me want to break it. It's an attitude that came on gradually when I wasn't paying attention. Some of it came throughout my upbringing and some from my own reading, observing, etc. The attitude is fear. When I read a book called  Love over Fear: Facing Monsters, Befriending Enemies, and Healing Our Polarized World (affilate link) by Dan White Jr. it made me realize that I have been motivated by fear when I didn't even realize it. The author says: “The raw experience of fearing a common enemy bands us together and can energize use to action. In the early 1980s, a group of psychologists developed a way to study how fear influences our behavior. Their approach to understanding fear is using the Terror Management Theory. These psychologists were able to determine that, in general, when fear influences our decisions, we can be made to respond in wild ways.” (Pg. 20 ) "Nah, I'm not susceptible to that sort of manipulation," I thought. But I kept reading. “They assembled a long list of fear-based code words such as hurt, danger, unsafe, peril, problematic, injure, sick, threat, and then tested them out in various communication forums. These words elicited a dramatic response of action from people...This language has become the constant drumbeat of American political speeches. Politicians play to our gut fears of each other.” Again, I didn't think this was true, until I started to listen objectively. On both sides of campaigns, it's used as a tactic! White says the report showed that positive language didn't elicit the same action, therefore politicians who run on positive language don't get the support. “Not surprising, this psychological Terror Management Report has become a formal guidebook for writing political speeches. Both Republicans and Democrats use this report as a framework for peppering their speech with fear-based code words.” They are experts at leveraging our fears. Fear is good when it motivates us to flee imminent danger. But it isn't good when it motivates us to hate people. It has opened my eyes to see how often I have lived in fear. White said, “When we are injured, dashed, and royally let down, we begin to fear those around us—we look for monsters. When we lack control over the suffering in our lives, our fears direct us outward into suspicion rather than inward to confront the pain in our souls.” P 30 So the more pain we have, the more we fear. We close down. We put up walls. We block out the love because we can't take the risk of hurting. We manufacture hurts and fears that aren't there. White says, “Fear ultimately does this—it shuts down relationships. This is quite arrogant, isn't it? We assume we know who someone is, and what they are about, from a snapshot, from a distance.” P 31 This applies to more than just relationships. We have a natural scarcity mindset and zero in on lack, says White. This is the emotional framework that says we don't have enough time, money, energy, education, protection, etc. (pg 33). As we look at the comparison between how Jesus lived and how the Pharisees (religious leaders) of his time lived, there is a contrast. The religious leaders were afraid of him taking away their power, so they acted from fear. But Jesus acted from love. Even when his life was on the line Jesus did not react from fear.   @import url(https://michellerayburn.com/wp-content/plugins/siteorigin-panels/css/front-flex.min.css); #pgc-w5e8c9d5645ec5-0-0 { width:100%;width:calc(100...

Why did Jesus gather disciples who probably hated each other? What did this have to do with God's mission? And what can we learn from the Prince of Peace?Cyd and Geoff talk with Dan White Jr, author of Love over Fear: Facing Monsters, Befriending Enemies, and Healing Our Polarized World.  They talk about why we don't need better “conflict resolution” skills. Rather, we need better “dealing with our fear” skills—because while love cast fear (1 John 4:18), it is also true that fear casts out love. Concluding Challenge: If you are feeling spiritually dry.  Just take a step toward someone you consider an enemy, or who thinks you are their enemy.  Interested in have Cyd Holsclaw offer you spiritual direction or coach? On this episode, Stephanie Williams O'Brien, Co-lead Pastor of Mill City Church in Minneapolis, MN, tells about being a church that meets in a local school and the creative partnerships they've formed to address the needs of local students. The non-profit, The Sheridan Story, formed by the church has now grown from an individual church initiative to a replicable model being implemented by churches across the Twin Cities to serve the students of local schools. She highlights the value of seeing their church as supportive actors in the story God is already telling on the ground in the local community. She suggests that God's vision is often far bigger than those we have in mind ourselves. We live in a highly polarized culture. We are polarized in all kinds of ways—politically, racially, even theologically. And it keeps getting worse. Why? Because we don’t talk to each other. All we see on the other side are monsters. Even though, as today’s guest Dan White Jr. says, those "monsters" are image-bearers of God. In this episode, I speak with Dan White, Jr., about what causes polarization and how we can begin to heal from it. THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDEDan White, Jr., is a Movement Developer for V3 Movement, church-planting and author of Love Over Fear: Facing Monsters, Befriending Enemies, and Healing Our Polarized World.Dan recently read Living Into Community by Christine Pohl. This book riffs off of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Life Together.Dan shares what led him to write Love Over Fear. The book is a deep dive into how fear can control us.Dan describes how polarization involves the process of taking people who have something in common and turning them toward hate for one another. In a polarized culture, moving toward one another with love can feel like complicity.Dan explains some of the neurology involved in polarization. Some of the disciples came from vastly different backgrounds. Yet, Jesus was able to bring them together.Jesus brings people together by being indiscriminate in his table fellowship. When we have compassion toward someone, we are able to see where they are suffering in their life.We can start connecting with people who are different by simply being inquisitive, by asking them questions.Dan tells the story of connecting with someone who believed strongly in legalizing marijuana. Dan began by simply asking him inquisitive questions. We have a tendency to make “monsters” out of people we disagree with.Jesus didn’t see monsters. He saw image-bearers.Find out more about Dan White, Jr., at www.loveoverfearproect.com. And follow Dan on Twitter and Facebook. My guest is Dan White Jr. His new book is Love over Fear: Facing Monsters, Befriending Enemies, and Healing Our Polarized World (https://www.amazon.com/Love-over-Fear-Befriending-Polarized/dp/0802418880/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=love+over+fear+dan+white&qid=1568749250&s=gateway&sr=8-1). Whether it's the news, social media, or well-intentioned friends, we're told daily to fear "others." We fear strangers, neighbors, the other side of the aisle, even those who parent differently. And when we're confronted with something that frightens us, our brain sees only two options: Attack or Avoid. But either way, polarization intensifies. What if you could defy your own instincts and choose a third option--scandalous, disruptive, unthinkable LOVE? Sure, we love people who are like us, who are easy to enjoy. Everyone does. But what about our enemies, the people we consider monsters? Loving them requires exceptional strength--strength only the Spirit can provide. Love over Fear is a compelling guide to conquering fear with love in an age of polarization. Hear stories of those who changed hearts and minds through radical love, learn how to practice disarming compassion, and discover the disruptive power of showing affection for those we perceive as monsters. Special Guest: Dan White Jr. .
