Once again, we recorded this episode a while back (a number of months ago, in this case) but due to the lamentable state of many things in the US, our episode this week feels eerily timely. For our first Noirvember Substantive Cinema epsiode of 2024, we are looking at one of Samuel Fuller's most celebrated and highly regarded films, Shock Corridor. In the movie, Johnny Barrett, a journalist in pursuit of fame and acclaim, poses as a lunatic in order to infiltrate a mental institution where a murder has taken place. Can he keep his sanity long enough to solve the case and what will be left of him if he can? In our discussion we cover: how Sam Fuller bluntly portrays America's various psychoses (nationalism, racial hatred, and the worship of violent power) in the three eyewitnesses that Johnny needs to interrogate, the legacy of Fuller's work in filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Spike Lee, and Jim Jarmusch, the role of journalism in a free society, and more! In the last two presidential elections about 8 in 10 evangelicals voted for Donald Trump, but can Kamala Harris steal some of those votes in 2024? We discuss the recent “Evangelicals for Harris” call and why it's so difficult to get Christians to think more theologically about politics. Ed Stetzer argues that abortion should still be a top priority when voting, and Tyler Huckabee says we should be uncomfortable endorsing any candidate. Rock That Doesn't Roll: The Story of Christian Music

Christian rock has a lot of naysayers, but for evangelical teens of the 1990s, it was EVERYTHING. For most kids raised in conservative Christian households, mainstream music was forbidden - if teens were going to rock, they needed to do it God's way. And the place to find Christian rock gods? Youth group. In the first episode of Rock that Doesn't Roll, hosts Andrew Gill (producer, Sound Opinions) and Leah Payne (author, God Gave Rock and Roll to You) talk with comedian Steve Hernandez and author Tyler Huckabee finding music, meaning, and identity in 1990s youth group culture. Youth ministry consultant Mark Oestreicher explains the world of high-production youth groups, where rock shows reigned as the best way to draw a crowd of teens into evangelical churches. In this episode, the music of Delirious?, DCTalk, and Relient K bring kids in the doors of the youth group room. But it couldn't always keep them. Steve and Tyler share their stories of loving - and in some cases leaving - the Christian rock scene that raised them. But even when you take the kid out of the youth group, it turns out that you may not be able to take the youth group music out of the kid. Do you have a story to share about rocking out to your favorite Christian band in youth group? Leave us a message at (629) 777-6336. Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia was just his third feature film. It remains both his most beloved and most divisive. Released at the very end of 1999, Magnolia was largely lauded by critics, received a number of year-end awards and nominations, and mostly overlooked by audiences. But like Fight Club before it, it found second life on DVD and quickly found an adoring audience, in addition to the source of a number of ubiquitous pop culture references, largely due to Tom Cruise's outrageous motivational speaker character, Frank T. J. Mackey. Still, three hours of high drama, weird dramatic flourishes, multiple storylines, falling frogs, and Aimee Mann sing-a-longs doesn't exactly sound like everyone's cup of tea. But it is the cup of tea of Relevant Magazine's senior editor Tyler Huckabee, who joined John and Joey to talk all about this classic in our round one finale! Find Tyler on Twitter @TylerHuckabee

The movie is best experienced without knowing much about it (so if you haven't seen it before, stop reading and watch it now!) but it's a beautifully human, true story about a 73 year old man and the lengths he went to to try to reconcile with his older brother before anything else happened to them. Details, credits, errata: We almost called this “Mel O’Drama” and were also considering “Claymore Minds” and “No Relation,” since our wonderful guest is Tyler Huckabee (no relation) and this film’s most famous line—“Every man dies, not every man really lives”—was written by the poet William Wallace, also no relation. This week’s film is the unbearable turkey Braveheart, a movie that won Best Picture, Best Director, and a ton of other awards it did not deserve. Fargo and Trainspotting, both terrific flicks, also came out this year. Heck, so did Mars Attacks. That should have won the Oscar. With last week’s episode, this marks our first explicit two-parter, on the subject of the relationship of fundamentalist Christianity to gender roles in the movies. You don’t have to listen to one to enjoy the other, but I personally consider the last episode a helpmeet to this one.Our image this week is of William Wallace telling the English to get lost from James E. Doyle’s 1864 history book A Chronicle of England, made freely available through Wikimedia commons. You can also read a scan of the full book on Google Books; Doyle both wrote the text and did the illustrations, which were engraved by Edmund Doyle—it’s pretty cool. Our theme song is Louis Armstrong and His Hot 5’s Muskrat Ramble, made freely available by the Boston Public Library and audio engineering shop George Blood, LP through the Internet Archive. I have an affinity for wit mixed with a little cynicism and sarcasm. Because of that, Tyler Huckabee is one of my favorite Twitter follows, and he was one of the first people I wrote down as someone I wanted on this podcast as a guest. I'm glad to finally get him on here to talk all things faith and culture. Tyler is the senior editor at RELEVANT Magazine and is one of the best writers I've read in a while. His stuff during COVID-19 has been especially poignant, particularly this article entitled, The Church Will Not Sacrifice Anyone for the Economy’s Sake, which we talked about in this conversation. I really appreciated what he had to say about Christians and COVID-19 and how we can and should respond to the pandemic. Tyler also lives in Nashville and gave an update on the relief efforts for the tornado that ripped through the middle of town in March just before COVID-19 shut down the city. Tyler is also known for his knowledge of superhero movies and comic books, so we talked quite a bit about that and, for someone like me who knows very little about that culture, he gave a rundown of a good entry point in terms of content and explained the differences of DC and Marvel. He also gave a preview of a couple superhero movies coming out this year. Sponsor This episode, once again, is brought to you by Donato’s Pizza. He equates our value with the stone used to carve Michelangelo’s David. We may not be perfect, but God makes us worthy. (27:19-36:40): GOOD NEWS!! In times like these, we are in dire need for some good news. Brian and Ian talk about 3D printed face masks, libraries full of toilet paper, and our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. (37:37-48:16): Thousands of Liberty students expected to return to campus amid coronavirus outbreak. Brian and Ian talk about why this ISN’T a good idea. Also, Churches go back to the future with drive-in services in the time of the coronavirus. (48:16-57:29): We hear from Sari Lash as she takes us through one of her guided prayers. It is an interactive and soothing audible prayer that aims to help us slow down and wait on God. Updated prayers can be received via text every Monday and Thursday. Text “prayerproject” to 31996. (58:32-1:08:36): Chris Castaldo, Pastor of New Covenant Church of Naperville, gives us his picture of God’s provision. He uses the story of the Israelites and manna in the desert. God will provide for us on a daily basis, no matter what. (1:08:36-1:15:01): We usually close out the show with Interweb Insanity. Thank you! ** Show Guest Ugo Eze: Instagram: @reachueTwitter: @reachuewebsite: ugoeze.com Email: reachue@gmail.comShort explanation of gratitude. · It is one of many positive emotions, and just might be the most important of all the positive emotions. · It focuses on what’s good in our lives and encourages us to be thankful for the things we already have that are not really to do with the materialistic world. · It is showing an appreciation for all the little things in life we otherwise take for granted. What is the importance of gratitude? · It increases the ability to enjoy and appreciate the good in life and generates positive emotions both for self and to others. · It reduces materialism, which makes people more competent, and greatens the feelings of relatedness. o Conversely, when you are materialistic, you feel less competent, less related, experience more negative emotions, and become more self-centered and arrogant. Gratitude and its impacts on mental and physical health.· Gratitude has been scientifically proven to help improve physical and mental health. · It also improves sleep quality particularly when you use a gratitude journal before bedtime and take 15 minutes to jot down things you are grateful for. · Gratitude improves self-esteem, and reduces aggression and other negative behavior traits like envy, jealousy, frustration, resentment, etc. · There are studies that suggest gratitude also helps reduce stress and could play a major role in overcoming trauma. · Gratitude helps you connect better with your spirituality, and in turn with the universe, which then the universe uses to reward you with an abundance of blessings and positivity Tips for Listeners for Increasing Gratitude: · Keep a gratitude journalo Write one thing or multiple things daily that you are grateful for (15 minutes before bedtime works wonders) · Take anything challenging or difficult, and write one thing positive about it, and place your focus on that· Try using good manners more often, it’s not just something our parents taught us, it can literally open many doors for us to connect with the universe. o Say “thank you” more and genuinely showing appreciation · Before the new year, write down all that you want to release on a piece of paper, and burn it or throw it in the trash (please do this as safely as possible, I am not encouraging pyrotechnics)· Write down all the things you were grateful for this past year that you want to carry forward with you into the next. Keep that somewhere you can see it every day and add on to it as needed. Sources: 1. In which we continue to continue the book. Our host Phil and our friend Tyler address some recent concerns regarding our three rules, and they recommend some potential punishments for rule-breaking. Unable to invent any truly inspired ideas themselves, they invite you, gentle reader, to submit your favorite methods for punishment and torture. (Tweet submissions with the hashtag #NoRedos.) Amongst many other profound and perturbing subjects, they go on to discuss pap-sucking, bestiality, and the Women of Faith Conference. But the real treat here comes around the 40 minute mark, when Phil interprets literally Dostoevsky's description of a character's "singsong voice", and Tyler follows suit by improvising a melodic interpretation of his own. You will not regret tuning in to the Brothers Karamazov and Friends! Unless, of course, you do.
