Friday Juma KhutbaFebruary 7th, 2025• The stability of a society is based on justice, as the slogan “no justice, no peace” reflects a universal truth. • In the U.S., both Republican and Democratic leaders have abused their power by pardoning family members, friends, and supporters. • Trump's executive orders aimed at deporting pro-Palestine protesters are no different from the actions of Democrats who silenced Palestinian voices at their conventions. • Both Republicans and Democrats align with billionaires and social influencers—proving no real difference between their goals, only in how they present themselves. • No leader or official should be above the law. Justice applies to everyone, no matter their rank. • Imam ‘Ali (a) is a timeless example of justice, as demonstrated when he personally implemented the punishment on Walid bin ‘Uqbah for leading prayers while intoxicated. • Historians call Imam ‘Ali “The Voice of Human Justice” because of his insistence on fairness and equality, even at the cost of his life. • Trump's plan to take over Gaza has been universally condemned as “ethnic cleansing” by global leaders, including the UN Secretary-General. • Justice is superior to generosity, as stated by Imam ‘Ali (a): “Justice puts things in their places, while generosity takes them out of their directions.” • The true leader is one who upholds justice and brings peace, as seen in the lives of the Ahlul Bayt (a). The White House has defended President Joe Biden's decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, stating that politics had tainted Hunter's cases and led to a miscarriage of justice. Both Republicans and some Democrats criticized the president for breaking his earlier promise not to pardon his son.President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Kash Patel as FBI director. Patel, who worked at the Pentagon during the first Trump administration, has vowed to reform the FBI.In Syria, armed terrorists are continuing to fight against Bashar al-Assad's government, which is supported by both Russia and Iran. The U.S. State Department has urged deescalation and the implementation of democratic elections in the country.
Did the Democrats lose the presidential election by focusing too much on personality politics? We explore this critical question and dissect the fascinating dynamics of the recent election victory of Donald Trump. The episode uncovers the strategic missteps of the Democratic Party, who seemed more concerned with attacking Trump's character than presenting a compelling vision for the country. By doing so, they missed an opportunity to connect with potential voters, including felons who might align with their values. Trump's simple yet powerful "Make America Great Again" message resonated with voters, providing a stark contrast to the Democrats' muddled strategy — a stark reminder of the importance of clear and consistent messaging in political campaigns.Winning involves more than just participation, and our discussion today emphasizes entering political races with the earnestness and strategy needed for success. Both Republicans and Democrats can learn from recent setbacks, similar to losing a championship game, and use these experiences as fuel for future victories. We express disappointment in the Democrats' recent performance, urging political players to maintain focus and determination. Ending on a motivational note, we encourage our listeners to view setbacks as stepping stones to success, reminding everyone that resilience and persistence are key to overcoming challenges and excelling in any endeavor.Send us a textWe want to hear from you, Introduce yourself the way you would like it aired, where your calling from State and City is fine as well as which Season, Podcast title and episode. Here we go with Episode 165 – packed tighter than a Costco on a Saturday. First up, Joe Rogan's playing the unexpected comedy advisor. He warned his buddy Tony Hinchcliffe not to use a Puerto Rico joke at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally. But Tony, being Tony, went rogue, comparing Puerto Rico to a “floating island of garbage” – and let's just say, the crowd's reaction was... mixed. Both Republicans and Democrats were quick to critique, but Rogan claims, “it kills in clubs,” while hinting Tony might “get stabbed” for it one day. Classic Rogan. And his verdict? The controversy will “blow over” – but will it really? Time will tell. Then there's Jimmy Fallon, who managed to go viral himself, but for all the wrong reasons. He brought on the Costco Guys – TikTok stars AJ, Big Justice, and the young Rizzler – to break down their “Boom meter.” But things got awkward fast. As they geared up to shout a chorus of “five booms,” Fallon interrupted, essentially shutting down their joy faster than you can say “low energy.” Viewers noticed Jimmy's barely concealed contempt and roasted him for not appreciating the “whimsy” of the trio. It's safe to say Fallon's audience loves the Costco Guys a lot more than he does. And finally, we've got a wildcard: breakdancer Raygun. After her Olympic debut went viral (and not in the way she'd hoped), Raygun's back with the #RaygunChallenge, inviting everyone to “out-dance” her for cash. Critics are tearing her apart, labeling her moves as “cringe” and “very basic street dancing,” but hey, she's still laughing all the way to the bank with that sponsorship deal. This episode unpacks the debate – is she milking her fame, or just proving that any publicity is good publicity? So, get ready as we dive into comedy blunders, TikTok tension, and Olympic-level facepalms. It's all here, raw and unfiltered, on Episode 165 of What Are We Doing. This week's all about the fine line between internet gold and absolute disaster. Buckle up – it's gonna be a wild one! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/what-are-we-doing-pod/support
The unemployment rate in Racine County, Wis., is below the national average, but voters there still feel the sting of high inflation for groceries and other goods. Both Republicans and Democrats have touted new industrial facilities in the region, which in its heyday had factories producing everything from tractors to malted milk balls. For our “Chasing the Vote” series, WSJ political reporter Jimmy Vielkind met business owners, residents and bowlers in Racine to find out how people are weighing the presidential candidates' economic plans. Both Republicans and Democrats are crossing political lines and banding together to help those devastated by Hurricane Helene. That's as another powerful Hurricane Milton already barrels towards the Florida coast, less than two weeks after Helene. Governor Brian Kemp and Donald Trump made an appearance together last week outside Augusta. From Operation Jericho Wall a year before the attack to directives by the Israeli government weeks before the attack detailing EXACTLY how many hostages and deaths would occur, to the stand-down order, to the Hannibal Directive where the Israeli government killed their own people and of course the funding of Hamas by Israel itself. Israel didn't just know ahead of time as Egypt warned of the attack 10 days earlier. They didn't just know ahead of time when they moved the music festival at the last moment to the border with full knowledge of the attack. They committed the attack themselves. Witnesses saw the IDF shoot festival goers. The Israeli government has pushed the notion of prophesy as "justification." The don't mind killing their own people in order to ensure domination and "sacrificial" destruction of the region to bring in the "Greater Israel Project." 1 year later, Israel has massacred so many and intends to push World War 3 with Iran, an ally of Russia and China. This would lead to all out devastation. Both Republicans and Democrats in the United States bow to Israel and are likely to help strikes against Iran. Netanyahu lobbied the US government on going to war with Iraq in 2001, fabricating the myth that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Now he's lobbying congress to attack Iran. World leaders bow to Israel as Israel has blackmail on thousands of powerful people worldwide. They employed Epstein. They trafficked children. They are the number one developer of gender bending drugs for children. They call themselves the "vaccine factory of the world." They brag about sending migrants to the west which stokes civil war. All of this ends with the Great Reset. They need an excuse. Order out of chaos that will lead to emergency orders, technocratic restrictions on free will. In the super-charged partisan atmosphere of an election year, one contentious issue has emerged as a beacon of bipartisanship: Nuclear power. Both Republicans and Democrats backed Denver congresswoman Diana DeGette's bill facilitating the construction of new reactors with cutting-edge designs, and last month President Biden signed it into law. But today's nuclear cheerleaders could learn something from the past — so we are sharing a short audio documentary that our producer Paul Karolyi created about Colorado's first and still only nuclear power plant, Fort St. Vrain, back in 2019. This audio documentary originally aired on the podcast Range & Slope and an abbreviated version aired on Colorado Public Radio on August 29, 2019. The song featured at the end of this story is an original composition by Jesse Wooten of Creekbed. Paul also recommends this recent article about the current debate over bringing nuclear power back to Colorado from Allen Best at the local energy blog Big Pivots. Even if Colorado does build a new reactor or convert an old coal plant to nuclear, we wouldn't be the first state to test out a next-gen nuclear reactor. Billionaire Bill Gates was in Wyoming in June to break ground on a new reactor being built by TerraPower. Do you know any crazy fun facts about Colorado produce? We're working on an episode about Olathe sweet corn, Palisade peaches, Rocky Ford melons, and Pueblo chiles, and we need your help! If you're a political junkie like me, this conversation will knock your socks off! Joe Trippi and Mike Madrid, one long time Democratic strategist, one long time Republican strategist discuss how DEMOCRACY IS ON THE BALLOT (and how 67% of BOTH Republicans and Democrats believe this). We also get into how candidates who have huge scandals (clears throat... did someone say "Herschel Walker"?) are able to stay in their races (and sometimes even get a bump!); what a "Bannon line" voter is and how to win them; where the real tossup races are in the House and Senate; what happened to the party that used to stand up to Russia that's now an extension of Putin's propoganda operation; what the most important hidden metric is that no one is paying attention to (Hint: It's neither the generic ballot nor presidential approval); what the best political strategists in the country are doing at this stage of the campaign; and much, much more! Many know Joe Trippi from his excellent podcast, That Trippi Show. Joe's been running political campaigns at every level in U.S. politics and even internationally, starting in city politics in Northern California and then jumping into the big leagues on Ted Kennedy's campaign for the Democratic nomination for President in 1980. Joe's also been involved in some groundbreaking “bottom up” strategies along the way like when he ran Governor Howard Dean's grassroots presidential campaign in 2004. More recently, he helped Doug Jones, a Democrat, win the Alabama Senate seat, the first Democrat to get elected to the Senate in Alabama in decades. Joe has also joined Lincoln Project to "build a pro-democracy coalition." Mike Madrid is a national political strategist, an expert in demographics and Latino politics. Mike's academic work on Latino politics became the foundation for groundbreaking communications and outreach strategies in California, Texas, Florida and nationwide. Later, Mike was a co-founder of the Lincoln Project which played a significant part in defeating Donald Trump. Mike also lectures on race, class and partisanship at USC and he's a regular contributor on one of our favorite programs Politicology with Ron Steslow. He is the co-host of the excellent and timely podcast The Latino Vote along with Chuck Rocha. Mike also hosts the program Mike Drop on the CallIn app which is then released as a podcast. What You Need to Know is Don't Ignore the Border and Immigration! Angela Merkel, a retired German politician, has been given a prestigious award, the Unesco Peace Prize for her efforts to welcome refugees. Maryland voters are choosing candidates in a primary for a big election year in the state. Both Republicans and Democrats have competitive primaries for governor in Maryland this year. The House is set to vote to protect same-sex and interracial marriages. Tuesday's vote stands as a direct confrontation with the Supreme Court, whose conservative majority in overturning Roe v. Wade abortion access signaled that other rights may be in jeopardy. Partisan battle lines have formed over a shrunken economic package that President Joe Biden wants Congress to complete within weeks. Biden conceded last week he would settle for a far narrower economic plan than he's wanted. Biden had hoped the measure would also address climate change, but Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia has blocked that. Britain shattered its record for highest temperature ever registered amid a heat wave that has seized swaths of Europe. The national weather forecaster predicted it would get hotter still Tuesday in a country ill prepared for such extremes. The typically temperate nation was just the latest to be walloped by unusually hot, dry weather that has gripped the continent since last week, triggering wildfires from Portugal to the Balkans and leading to hundreds of heat-related deaths. Greenwood Police Chief James Ison said at a news conference Monday that Jonathan Sapirman, of Greenwood, began firing after leaving a bathroom at the Greenwood Park Mall shortly before it closed Sunday evening. He says Sapirman continued shooting people until a 22-year-old man who was legally armed shot and killed him. A prosecutor says the gunman who attacked the high school in Parkland, Florida, in 2018 should be executed because he killed his victims in a cold and calculated manner. Prosecutor Mike Satz told the 12 jurors who will decide whether Nikolas Cruz is sentenced to death or life in prison without parole how he killed each victim. Cruz pleaded guilty in October to 17 counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 14 students and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Today we discuss Joe Biden's press conference and statistics that were presented as fact but were actually false. We also discuss how I have been censored and shadow banned on Facebook. This is a common problem with conservative talk show host.
Ronald Reagan Part 2 By 1967, the transition to passionate conservative for Ronald Reagan was complete, and the new governor of California finally secured a distinguished office to bring his brand of conservatism into the mainstream of California politics. Translating that success into victory for a general Presidential election, though, was going to be far more difficult. How do you get a country to embrace the message “that government is not the solution, it's the problem,” right off the back of LBJ's Great Society legislation breakthroughs? Both Republicans and Democrats, at this point, had embraced expanding the size of the Federal Government, was Reagan truly unique in wanting to reverse that trend? In this episode of Unpresidented, we examine Reagan's determination and persistence to finally secure the Presidency after going through two losing campaigns in 1968 and 1976, and what societal factors made his brand more appealing as the nation approached the 1980s. We also discuss the volatile highs and lows of his Presidency, and how he was able to keep his popularity consistently high after having one of the worst first two years in office. Two episodes of Reagan still feel underwhelming in covering all of the implications of his Presidency and career, as his legacy lives on in much of the culture and politics that we see today. One year ago today George Floyd's death sparked outrage that will likely change policing in the U.S. forever. The unarmed black man was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin while under arrest. A viral video showed Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd's neck for several minutes until he died. After the video was shown, violent protests erupted across the U.S. over police brutality and racism. This past March, Derek Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. The other three former officers who aided Chauvin are set to go to trial in August. Calls for police reform have also been at the forefront following Floyd's death. Both Republicans and Democrats have promised to pass legislation but have fallen short on getting a bill passed. Civil rights attorney and FOX News contributor Leo Terrell and founder and CEO of TruthNotLies and FOX News contributor Jehmu Greene look back at the past year, the impact of George Floyd's death and where America is today on police reform. U.S intelligence agencies are set to deliver a public report to Congress in the next month, detailing what they have discovered about mysterious flying objects, referred to as UFOs or UAPs. Fox News Nation Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin joins to discuss how the study of UFOs gained prominence and shifted from a joke to a legitimate nation security concern at the Pentagon. She explains how these "unidentified aerial phenomena" have baffled pilots and radar alike and breaks down what possible explanations there could be for these mysterious occurrences. People often complain that our problems are all the fault of the media. Well while they aren't the only ones at fault the are at least partially responsible. What do you think the other side thinks? Guest Dan Vallone is the Director of More in Common U.S.A., an organization that’s been asking Democrats and Republicans that critical question. Their work has uncovered countless “perception gaps” in our understanding of each other. For example, Democrats think that about 30 percent of Republicans support "reasonable gun control," but in reality, it’s about 70 percent. Both Republicans and Democrats think that about 50 percent of the other side would feel that physical violence is justified in some situations, but the actual number for each is only about five percent. “Both sides are convinced that the majority of their political opponents are extremists,” says Dan. “And yet, that's just not true.” Social media encourages the most extreme views to speak the loudest and rise to the top—and it’s hard to start a conversation and work together when we’re all arguing with mirages. But Dan’s insights and the work of More in Common provide a hopeful guide to unraveling the distortions we’ve come to accept and correcting our foggy vision.
Democrats think they are doing you a favor by spending your money on their wasteful projects. Both Republicans and Democrats pretend that infrastructure is a gift to the people, but it is your money in the first place.
On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: President Joe Biden, during a meeting on the ongoing crisis at the Southern Border, told reporters, “So this new surge we're dealing with now started with the last administration, but it's our responsibility to deal with it humanely…” In the wake of the latest mass shooting in Colorado, debates continue on Capitol Hill over gun control. Both Republicans and Democrats say they want these shootings to come to an end, but Democrats are taking it one step further, saying in order to pass comprehensive gun control measure, the filibuster must end as well. Last week, Xavier Becerra was confirmed as the Secretary for Health and Human Services, and pro-lifers remain troubled by the confirmation. Host of EWTN's Pro-Life Weekly, Catherine Hadro, joins to share what the pro-life reaction has been to Secretary Becerra's confirmation. In Segment 1, President of the West Virginia State Senate and Lieutenant Governor Craig Blair (R-Berkeley) stops by ahead of the state’s legislative session.Blair talks about the possibility of phasing out the state’s income tax as part of the upcoming session. He says if the tax is eliminated, there is no defined timeline and it could still take several years to fully remove the tax. He says eliminating the tax would help bring people to the Mountain State rather than seeing them move to states that already have no income tax.The senate president also praises Governor Jim Justice’s decision to appoint his predecessor Mitch Carmichael to an economic development position in the governor’s office. He says he believes the decision was the best choice due to Carmichael’s background in broadband. In Segment 2, continuing to gear up for the legislative session, we hear from Senate Minority Leader Stephen Baldwin (D-Greenbrier County) on what the party is hoping to see come out of the session. He says they are looking for “real solutions for real problems.”One of those problems, Baldwin says, is healthcare as families and small businesses are “maxed out” amid the pandemic. He also says he hopes to continue fighting another issue West Virginia has been facing long before the COVID-19 pandemic – substance abuse. With crisis calls and overdoses both up, he says it’s important to continue the fight against the opioid crisis.Baldwin says he hopes to find a way to be transparent and hear from the people on the issues affecting them, especially as there will not be as much access to the Capitol amid COVID-19 precautions. In Segment 3, we continue our look ahead at the legislative session with House Speaker Roger Hanshaw (R-Clay). Hanshaw says one of the big changes coming to the West Virginia Capitol is the protocol to keep everyone safe during the pandemic. The galleries will be closed to the public as those areas are being reserved for remote seating for members and staff who choose not to wear a mask. Masks will be required to be on the floor of both the House and Senate.Hanshaw also weighs in on the state income tax, saying the House, Senate and the governor’s staff have been meeting for the past month to see if there is a path forward in eliminating the tax. Both Republicans and Democrats agree broadband in West Virginia needs fixing. Telework, telehealth and virtual learning have brought the issue with the Mountain State’s internet connectivity into the spotlight throughout the pandemic. In Segment 4, Minority Whip Delegate Sean Fluharty (D-Ohio County) talks about making the 23 Democrats’ voices heard in the 100-member House of Delegates among the Republican supermajority.Fluharty says it will be important for the Democrats to work with the majority party to move forward legislation that benefits working West Virginians, and to speak up if a piece of legislation could have negative impacts on the majority of people in the state. The minority whip also says he plans to continue his work with Republican Moore Capito in a bipartisan effort to get more high tech industries to West Virginia. The two have already formed a high tech caucus for the issue. Fluharty says the move will help diversify the state’s economy and bring more business to the Mountain State.

Congress has made it very clear- they have no regard for the people they have sworn to serve, and they do not have any fear of being held accountable. The recent coronavirus stimulus package, the 5,600-page monstrosity, is the latest, most stunning, and brazen example, as the elected officials throw ordinary Americans breadcrumbs as they continue to enrich themselves and their special interests. Both Republicans and Democrats have sold this country out as Congress has failed to put America and ordinary Americans first. Millions of people out of work, an estimated 30-60% of small businesses are projected to go under, and a $28-trillon debt. At what point do we say enough is enough? Congress is getting closer to passing a stimulus bill. The focus now is on an over $900 billion plan that will include more unemployment benefits, money for schools and aid for small businesses. Both Republicans and Democrats seem ready to compromise - but for many small businesses, it might be too little too late. Plus, American hospitals are in a covid crisis. Both Republicans and Democrats are going to have to swallow some very unpleasant truths if they expect to actually learn anything useful from this year’s election. Nevada Policy’s Michael Schaus and Robert Fellner dive into the election outcomes, and beyond the partisan shouting match, to discuss what, exactly, those lessons might be.
Paradoxically, it turns out that we are the United States of America after all. United in our insomnia. Both Republicans and Democrats report not being able to get a decent night’s sleep. United in our fear. Both parties fear that if the other candidate wins, the very future of our nation is endangered. United in our alienation from national unity. However you voted, the reality is that about half the country voted for the other candidate. United in not getting that fifty percent. United in living with a pit in our stomach. United in handling all this stress not well. We eat too much. We drink too much. We perseverate too much. The United States of America. United in our dividedness. United in our 50-50 split. In the face of this division, I want to raise a single question. For each person listening, here is the question: what can I do, what can I personally do right now, to make this grim situation a little better?
Over the past month, the Senate has rushed to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court. Both Republicans and Democrats have claimed that the other is inappropriately reshaping, or considering reshaping, the Court. But how did the Supreme Court get so caught up in politics? And is there a way out? David Orentlicher, professor of law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and author of “Two Presidents Are Better Than One: The Case for a Bipartisan Executive Branch,” studies high courts around the world. He says part of the problem is that the U.S. Constitution sets few rules in stone — and that paves the way for partisanship and controversy. But could we do things differently? Absolutely. Indeed, he says there are lots of ideas we could borrow from abroad.
When it comes to foreign policy and war (among other things) there are not two opposing political parties in Washington. Both Republicans and Democrats desperately cling to the warfare state as their ideological and economic lifeblood. That is why Congress is using a bizarre trick to attempt to block President Trump's plan to remove US troops from its longest war in history (Afghanistan). Plus in today's program: The HUGE scandal in Florida's Covid testing!!!
In this episode: We have been subtly tricked into believing that fear is the voice we should listen to. We have become enemies of one another, champions of causes over people. What if we found new purpose for life and we shut out the fear and lived by love? (Article contains affililate links. This means that when you click a link and make a purchase, I might receive a small comission from that purchase.) Inspired Life I read a book recently that really opened my eyes to something that had become a habit for me, and it made me want to break it. It's an attitude that came on gradually when I wasn't paying attention. Some of it came throughout my upbringing and some from my own reading, observing, etc. The attitude is fear. When I read a book called Love over Fear: Facing Monsters, Befriending Enemies, and Healing Our Polarized World (affilate link) by Dan White Jr. it made me realize that I have been motivated by fear when I didn't even realize it. The author says: “The raw experience of fearing a common enemy bands us together and can energize use to action. In the early 1980s, a group of psychologists developed a way to study how fear influences our behavior. Their approach to understanding fear is using the Terror Management Theory. These psychologists were able to determine that, in general, when fear influences our decisions, we can be made to respond in wild ways.” (Pg. 20 ) "Nah, I'm not susceptible to that sort of manipulation," I thought. But I kept reading. “They assembled a long list of fear-based code words such as hurt, danger, unsafe, peril, problematic, injure, sick, threat, and then tested them out in various communication forums. These words elicited a dramatic response of action from people...This language has become the constant drumbeat of American political speeches. Politicians play to our gut fears of each other.” Again, I didn't think this was true, until I started to listen objectively. On both sides of campaigns, it's used as a tactic! White says the report showed that positive language didn't elicit the same action, therefore politicians who run on positive language don't get the support. “Not surprising, this psychological Terror Management Report has become a formal guidebook for writing political speeches. Both Republicans and Democrats use this report as a framework for peppering their speech with fear-based code words.” They are experts at leveraging our fears. Fear is good when it motivates us to flee imminent danger. But it isn't good when it motivates us to hate people. It has opened my eyes to see how often I have lived in fear. White said, “When we are injured, dashed, and royally let down, we begin to fear those around us—we look for monsters. When we lack control over the suffering in our lives, our fears direct us outward into suspicion rather than inward to confront the pain in our souls.” P 30 So the more pain we have, the more we fear. We close down. We put up walls. We block out the love because we can't take the risk of hurting. We manufacture hurts and fears that aren't there. White says, “Fear ultimately does this—it shuts down relationships. This is quite arrogant, isn't it? We assume we know who someone is, and what they are about, from a snapshot, from a distance.” P 31 This applies to more than just relationships. We have a natural scarcity mindset and zero in on lack, says White. This is the emotional framework that says we don't have enough time, money, energy, education, protection, etc. (pg 33). As we look at the comparison between how Jesus lived and how the Pharisees (religious leaders) of his time lived, there is a contrast. The religious leaders were afraid of him taking away their power, so they acted from fear. But Jesus acted from love. Even when his life was on the line Jesus did not react from fear. @import url(https://michellerayburn.com/wp-content/plugins/siteorigin-panels/css/front-flex.min.css); #pgc-w5e8c9d5645ec5-0-0 { width:100%;width:calc(100...
Both Republicans and Centrists are demeaning those who want middle-class centric policies with the "Free Stuff" trope. It is nothing but projection.
This week's episode of Thoughts from Maharrey Head is a hard dose of reality. Both Republicans and Democrats claim to revere the Constitution. But do they? Really? I don't think they do. In fact, I think the vast majority of politicians, including the current president, view the Constitution as nothing but a prop in their political theater. You can visit the show notes page here: https://bit.ly/340sM98 Thoughts from Maharrey Head focuses on constitutional issues and political decentralization. It's Friday, so that means it's panel time. A federal judge today issued a preliminary injunction blocking Mississippi's fetal heartbeat anti-abortion law from going into effect, saying it infringes on women's health care rights. “Here we go again. Mississippi has passed another law banning abortions prior to viability,” Judge Carlton Reeves wrote in his order. "By banning abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, SB 226 prevents a woman's free choice, which is central to personal dignity and autonomy.” The Mississippi ban prohibited abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, or around six weeks into pregnancy. Governor Phil Bryant signed the bill into law in March. The lawsuit leading to the injunction was filed by the Jackson Women's Health Organization against Thomas Dobbs, the state health officer of Mississippi. After defying political gravity for three years, Theresa May brought her tortured tenure as UK prime minister to a close Friday. "I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honor of my life to hold," she said outside Downing Street, her voice quivering in the morning sunshine. And with that, she's off - or at least she will be later in the summer, once a new Conservative leader is elected. We knew it was imminent, but to me, it is still a surprise. The US government is stressing that Julian Assange is no journalist after bringing an 18-count indictment against the co-founder of WikiLeaks. Federal prosecutors are accusing Assange of violating the Espionage Act in working with a former Army intelligence analyst to obtain and distribute classified information. That worries some professional journalists because it's close to what they do. Assange remains in jail in London after being evicted from the Ecuadorian Embassy there. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo notified lawmakers Friday that US President Donald Trump is invoking his emergency authority to sidestep Congress and complete 22 arms deals that would benefit Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries, despite lawmakers' objections to the transactions. Both Republicans and Democrats urged the Trump administration this week not to take the rare step of exploiting a legal window to push through deals - worth about $8 billion, according to congressional aides - that lawmakers have blocked from being finalized. You know, it was Wall Street who was happy and well cared for during the Obama administration. Now it seems like the war machine, the military industrial complex and the arms manufacturers are being so well cared for.Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan on Thursday acknowledged that the growing tensions with Iran “may involve sending additional troops” to the region. Shanahan's comments marked the first public confirmation that the Trump administration is considering sending additional US forces to curtail what it claims are “troubling and escalatory indications and warnings” from Iran. The Pentagon has already deployed a carrier strike group and a bomber task force to the Middle East, and news reports emerged this week that Shanahan on Thursday was set to present the White House with a request to deploy 10,000 troops to the Middle East. An earlier report said that the US could send upwards of 120,000 additional troops. Both Republicans and Democrats have very different, radical answers on the issue of immigration in the United States. But a new study finds that most pastors actually occupy a space in between. Find out more when you listen to this story.
Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: Both Republicans and Democrats in the US claim it’s alright to threaten Venezuela with invasion, because its not a democracy. But we’ll talk with a veteran Black activist who was an official observer of democracy in action in Venezuela. And, a call for the abolition of poverty, by getting rid of the class that is hoarding all the wealth. Angela Davis, the human rights activist, was initially disinvited from an event of the Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, Davis’s home town, apparently because of her support for Palestinian rights. The month before, CNN fired Mark Lamont Hill for supporting Palestinians in a speech at the United Nations. We spoke with Michael Fischbach, a professor of history at Randolph-Macon College and author of a new book titled “Black Power and Palestine.” Fischbach says Black American empathy with Palestinians and Arabs is nothing new. The South American nation of Venezuela has held more elections in the past 20 years than any other nation in the western hemisphere, and maybe the entire world. But the corporate media and both political parties in the United States insist that Venezuela’s socialist government is a dictatorship. President Trump has seized billions in Venezuelan assets, and is threatening military action. In Greenville, South Carolina, Efia Nwangaza is a people’s lawyer and director of the Malcolm X Center for Self-Determination. Nwangaza was among the international observers that have verified all of Venezuela’s elections as free and fair. The popular backlash against deepening economic inequality gets more intense by the day. William Anderson is co-author of a book titled, “As Black as Resistance: Finding Conditions for Liberation.” In an article in Truthout, Anderson said it’s time to heed Dr. Martin Luther King’s call for the abolition of poverty.
Both Republicans and Democrats won in the mid-term elections. But what did that split win mean?
Both Republicans and Democrats woke up Wednesday morning claiming victory in Tuesday's midterms. Democrats patted themselves on the back for taking back the House of Representatives and flipping seven governorships from red to blue. And in a press conference, President Donald Trump praised his party, and himself, for gaining ground in the Senate. Americans remain sharply divided at the ballot box, from which political party they support to initiatives on issues like climate change.
Both Republicans and Democrats believe that the state can solve our problems as a country. It's time to start putting faith in what really matters.
Both Republicans and Democrats are claiming victory after the US government reopened following a three day shutdown. But the status of the Dreamers - the undocumented migrants who entered the US as children - is still unresolved. The whole episode has reignited a debate about the effectiveness of Congress. Is it still able to carry out its duties, or is the system broken? Randolph Nogel reports.
The Inconvenient Truth About the Democratic Party Did you know that the Democratic Party defended slavery, started the Civil War, founded the KKK, and fought against every major civil rights act in U.S. history? Watch as Carol Swain, professor of political science at Vanderbilt University, shares the inconvenient history of the Democratic Party. When you think about racial equality and civil rights, which political party comes to mind? The Republicans? Or, the Democrats? Most people would probably say the Democrats. But this answer is incorrect. Since its founding in 1829, the Democratic Party has fought against every major civil rights initiative, and has a long history of discrimination. The Democratic Party defended slavery, started the Civil War, opposed Reconstruction, founded the Ku Klux Klan, imposed segregation, perpetrated lynchings, and fought against the civil rights acts of the 1950s and 1960s. In contrast, the Republican Party was founded in 1854 as an anti-slavery party. Its mission was to stop the spread of slavery into the new western territories with the aim of abolishing it entirely. This effort, however, was dealt a major blow by the Supreme Court. In the 1857 case Dred Scott v. Sandford, the court ruled that slaves aren’t citizens; they’re property. The seven justices who voted in favor of slavery? All Democrats. The two justices who dissented? Both Republicans. The slavery question was, of course, ultimately resolved by a bloody civil war. The commander-in-chief during that war was the first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln – the man who freed the slaves. Six days after the Confederate army surrendered, John Wilkes Booth, a Democrat, assassinated President Lincoln. Lincoln’s vice president, a Democrat named Andrew Johnson, assumed the presidency. But Johnson adamantly opposed Lincoln’s plan to integrate the newly freed slaves into the South’s economic and social order. Johnson and the Democratic Party were unified in their opposition to the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery; the 14th Amendment, which gave blacks citizenship; and the 15th Amendment, which gave blacks the vote. All three passed only because of universal Republican support. During the era of Reconstruction, federal troops stationed in the south helped secure rights for the newly freed slaves. Hundreds of black men were elected to southern state legislatures as Republicans, and 22 black Republicans served in the US Congress by 1900. The Democrats did not elect a black man to Congress until 1935. But after Reconstruction ended, when the federal troops went home, Democrats roared back into power in the South. They quickly reestablished white supremacy across the region with measures like black codes – laws that restricted the ability of blacks to own property and run businesses. And they imposed poll taxes and literacy tests, used to subvert the black citizen’s right to vote. And how was all of this enforced? By terror -- much of it instigated by the Ku Klux Klan, founded by a Democrat, Nathan Bedford Forrest. As historian Eric Foner - himself a Democrat - notes: “In effect, the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party.” President Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, shared many views with the Klan. He re-segregated many federal agencies, and even screened the first movie ever played at the White House - the racist film “The Birth of a Nation,” originally entitled “The Clansman.” A few decades later, the only serious congressional opposition to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 came from Democrats. Eighty percent of Republicans in Congress supported the bill. Less than 70 percent of Democrats did. Democratic senators filibustered the bill for 75 days, until Republicans mustered the few extra votes needed to break the logjam. And when all of their efforts to enslave blacks, keep them enslaved, and then keep them from voting had failed, the Democrats came up with a new strategy: If black people are going to vote, they might as well vote for Democrats. As President Lyndon Johnson was purported to have said about the Civil Rights Act, “I’ll have them n*****s voting Democrat for two hundred years.” So now, the Democratic Party prospers on the votes of the very people it has spent much of its history oppressing. Democrats falsely claim that the Republican Party is the villain, when in reality it’s the failed policies of the Democratic Party that have kept blacks down. Massive government welfare has decimated the black family. Opposition to school choice has kept them trapped in failing schools. Politically correct policing has left black neighborhoods defenseless against violent crime. So, when you think about racial equality and civil rights, which political party should come to mind? I’m Carol Swain, professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University, for Prager University.
