Andrew Vacante of Combust, Steamroll, Downfall, and more joins us to talk about NYHC from a modern New Yorker's perspective. We get into how the identity of NYHC has changed over time, the drought of native NYHC bands in the 2010s, and how Andrew's bands have helped change the tenor of the scene. Plus, many other digressions on hardcore minutia.  Bands mentioned: Killing Time, Sheer Terror, Cro-Mags, Breakdown, Madball, Merauder, Sick of it All, Countdown, Krimewatch, and many more.  Intro song: Combust - "Why I Hate" Outro song: Steamroll - "Marked"

Blackout! Records was formed in 1988 by Bill Wilson and Jim Gibson. In 1989, the label released its album, a New York hardcore compilation album entitled Where the Wild Things Are.[1] The album included tracks from Sheer Terror, Killing Time, and others. After this first release, Gibson amicably parted company to start his own record label, Noiseville Records.  The label ended the 1990s with records from Killing Time, Kill Your Idols, and East Bay/ Berkeley bands Redemption 87 and Powerhouse. The early part of the 2000s brought some new blood, including Crime In Stereo, NJ's The Banner, The Procedure, and The Commercials. The last official Blackout! release was The Fire Still Burns in 2005. Although no longer releasing new music, the label still maintains a blog at its website which is infrequently updated and has the catalog available digitally on Amazon, iTunes, eMusic, Rhapsody, and other major digital outlets through The Orchard. I got Bill on the Skype and this is what we chat about Growing up with a genetic immune condition Designing the artwork for the Where The Wild Things Are Comp How he got albums in record stores Traveling on Lollapalooza The Goops H20 Plow United Kill Your Idols Business partner trying to steal his label Will he start putting out more records And a ton more Lastly I started doing whiteboard animations so if your marketing department has said recently “Hey, we need a whiteboard animation” then email me at mike@drive80.com Feel free to support  the podcast for as little as $1 a month through Patreon

In 1992, Tripface was born. They began to organize and play shows with their friends within their small town, in basements, recreation halls, and garages. For the most part, they were parties, gatherings of a handful of skaters, metalheads, and geeks from the local area high schools. The bills were always shared with their friends Grid and a mix of side projects. Playing a cross of 1990s metalcore and NYHC, the band grew in popularity on Long Island and began to make a dent on the East Coast. After a few months, the band recorded the Closed In demo.  They would go on to play many shows, including CBGBs, the QE2, Right Track Inn, the PWAC, and the Wetlands, sharing stages with bands like Warzone, Sheer Terror, Agnostic Front, Hatebreed, and Outburst. The rest of the information you will find out in this interview. Peter was one of the most charismatic frontmen that ever graced a studio or a stage. Him and his band mates (Keith Alexander, Louie Beato, Kenny Hickey, Josh Silver, Sal Abruscato, and Johnny Kelly) are responsible for influencing generations of musicians, whether they be from his home city or Brooklyn (Life of Agony, Biohazard), or from Louisiana (Crowbar, or from overseas (Paradise Lost). However, with great art, there will be admirers and those that want to censor it. In this episode, I talk with Baron Misuraca of Carnivore A.D., who was friends with Peter when he founded Sheer Terror with Paul Bearer. In fact, the current members of Carnivore A.D. were all thanked in the “Retaliation” album (Baron in Sheer Terror, Chuck in The Crumbsuckers, and Joe in Whiplash), so there is legitimate history there, and there are songs in the Carnivore A.D. set list written by Peter that generate controversy today by those who judge the songs at face value without listening to the context and intent of the song. Also, Baron and I discuss the idea of “Cancel Culture,” how it was around since the days of Igor Stravinsky in the early 20th Century, how it's easy for a group that espouses negative viewpoints to adopt any symbol and change its meaning, and how he handles it. Also, we discuss how Peter himself may have handled it if he were still here. Sheer Terror came out of the very strange New York Hardcore scene of the 80s — before the music became codified into the metallic, bouncy mosh parts we think of as NYHC today. While Sheer Terror is certainly no stranger to blending metal and punk, their sound is much more Tom G. Warrior plus Oi! rather than syncopated, single-string riffs. Nothing against bouncy mosh parts, but Sheer Terror is much more my cup of tea, personally. Paul and I talk not only about the weird world of punk and hardcore in New York in the 80s, but also about Paul's cooking and his aggressive and comical pet Russian tortoises. I've known Chris Nguyen for 15 years or so. I'd say probably 75% of the times I have run into him has been at a show Borrowed Time was playing. When I first heard he was their new vocalist, I thought that there is really no better person to join that band. As you will learn from the interview, Chris had been a vocalist in a handful of local bands in the early to mid 2000s. He was always a big supporter of Borrowed Time so it really made sense that he would join their band eventually. Chris's first show with the band is Sunday September 5 at Photo City at the Hayward Family memorial. If you happen to listen to this episode after that, they will also be playing again in Rochester Montage Music Hall on October 25 with Slapshot and Sheer Terror. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enterprise-hardcore-podcast/support

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever. Kill Your Idols was an American hardcore punk band from New York, active from 1995 through 2007 and were signed to SideOneDummy Records. The band released many 7" EPs, splits with other bands (including Full Speed Ahead, Fisticuffs, Voorhees, Good Riddance, and Poison Idea), compilation tracks, and full-length LPs in their 11-year run. Most of their records were released on vinyl as well as compact disc. They cite Poison Idea, Negative Approach, Sheer Terror, Agnostic Front, Minor Threat, Warzone, Sick of It All, and 7 Seconds as some of their influences. KYI was very fast and had a loud, dirty, dual guitar sound with shouted vocals. They employed hints of melody in their song structure. Although they derived many of their influences from California and D.C. style hardcore, they were considered a New York hardcore band. I got Andy West on the Skype and this is what we chat about: Starting off as a Dead Head Was he a songwriter prior to starting the band Who started getting their tattoos What does he think about playing Long Island Playing every small town that they could Dealing with depression Always writing a ton of songs What are his thoughts on their new songs Their last show when they broke up The Webster Hall show And a ton more If you market aggressively on Instagram Stories and want custom stickers then go here to get custom stickers or just email mike@drive80.com and I can send you samples. Episode 15 Tim Borror. Tim Borror is a Philadelphia Hardcore Legend, who has had his hands in booking shows as early as 1987, and later would become one of the most successful booking agents in Hardcore Punk and in Metal. He began booking Killing Time and Vision a US tour, and the rest they say is history. He worked out of a North Philly apartment booking both shows and running his own booking agency, handling bands like Sheer Terror, Life of Agony and Type O Negative. I don't want to transcribe the entire contents of the conversation in this bio, but needless to say, by the time he was 20, he was responsible for booking so many of our favorite bands from both hardcore and metal. His impact in american heavy metal, the rise of swedish death metal and also in metalcore today is absolutely astounding. There are so many good stories and lessons on how he graduated to the big leagues while still keeping his core beliefs intact. Throughout all of this, he still regards himself as a punk rocker/hardcore kid at heart. Which considering the magnitude of the work he puts in with some serious bands, its a testament to the same tenets we've spoke about with other guests, DIY spirt, the inspiration and never give up attitude which drives him as an entrepreneur from a very early age, to a very powerful and successful booking agent with almost 30 years in the business. His story speaks for itself and there is much to learn from our conversation. Whether you're in a band, or just want to know how or why people get involved in the music industry beyond being in a band, this is an absolute master class on all of the things that aren't written in text books. Since the day I started this podcast, Paul Bearer was and remained on my list of top 5 people that I had wanted to interview for more than one reason. I'm sure that its clear to almost anyone who has seen him play on any stage anywhere during his over 35 year career in music that he is one of the most unique front-men the hardcore/punk scene has ever had. Its an enduring legacy that persists because Paul is known as much for the great material he's been making for all those years on records as much as his for his classic rants, wit and epic storytelling in between the songs. So, as satisfying and almost familiar as it was to hear Paul speak in a way that reflected the lyrics and stage persona that many of us have come to know and expect over the years, it was intriguing and gratifying to hear him speak in a deep, caring and profound way. He showed a side I had never really seen before and spoke of things I had never heard in previous interviews. Warzone/Always - A Friend For Life (Lower East Side Crew E.P.) Youth of Today/Shout It (Break Down the Walls) Bold/Nailed To The X (Speak Out) Gorilla Biscuits/New Direction (Start Today) Judge/Bringin' It Dow (Bringin' It Down) Shelter/Enough (Perfection Of Desire) Inside Out/No Spiritual Surrender (No Spiritual Surrender) Iceburn/Iron - I (Hephaestus) Into Another/Anxious (Ignaurus) Better Than a Thousand/Motivation (Just One) Elliott/Second Story Skyscraper (U.S Songs) Primal Rite/Chapter Zero (Dirge Of Escapism) Pour finir un mix des groupes qui nous semblent important.

The legendary New York Hardcore band Murphy’s Law held a concert that brought together hundreds of punk rockers to listen to the blasting sounds of punk rock in the iconic venue of Tompkins Square park. The bands included Sheer Terror, Killing Time and the Mighty Mighty Boss Tones… The show was a benefit for the bands front man Jimmy G. The concert was an attempt to raise the $40,000 he needs to pay for gallbladder surgery. Punk rock got its start at small clubs located near the park, among the most famous was known as Seven - A. The band reveled in a working class culture of brotherhood and beer, but one where women had a more prominent role then the frat boy culture we’ve heard before congress in recent days. In fact at todays show, women made up half the crowd of at least a thousand and also in attendance were many children, boys and girls who danced and enjoyed the bands with the adults. Spike haired bunkers wheeled baby carriages, hairless dudes carried their daughters on their shoulders to see the bands. And a spokesperson on the stage referred to the police as our “9th precinct friends.” A great time was had by all.

I hung out with him at his house on Long Island and discussed his role in the band, how Peter Steele and him met and became friends decades ago as well as Baron's role in the legendary band "Sheer Terror" in which he played bass for in the early days and appears on early demo tapes. I'm glad we made time to do this. Baron is a sincere and humble guy. I think it comes off as such in this episode. Some Sunday Morning Special: Gossip, Rants und ‎Lebenshilfe. Diesmal aus Köln und New York City. Zu Gast ist Paul Bearer (Sheer Terror). In this episode of the mighty Aethervox Ehrenfeld Podcast I have a conversation with Paul Bearer of Sheer Terror and Joe Coffee fame. It took a while until I finally convinced Paul to do this with me and I was very happy when this finally happened. We talk about his life and career as well as growing up in old New York and how life in the city is in 2016. I learn how Marky Ramone eats a Snickers Bar (it's disgusting) and that Paul wishes he could write cheerleader lyrics like Jamey from Hatebreed. This conversation is of personal significance to me (I forgot to tell him that I have a Time don't heal a Thing Tattoo on my shin). To this day I can relate to Sheer Terror as a hardcore band and Paul as a character and the driving force behind it because of the deeply personal approach in the lyrics, the nihilism, the misanthropic undertone, the poetry and at the same time the wit and hilarity of them. Paul is not a bitter guy at all and very easy to talk to. Also he is a great singer and entertainer. I truly appreciate the time he took to have this conversation with me. That being said: We did this via Google Hangout on Air and there is some sort of time delay from Brooklyn to Ehrenfeld (who could have foreseen that) which might be confusing to listeners. Also the submitted audio quality is not the best, some words are cut of and Paul speaks in his unique Staten Island mother tongue, which I have been told is not easy to understand by the untrained listener. Thus I made the decision to release this episode of the podcast as a bonus in between Thursdays. I hope all of you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed doing this with Paul. I guess you can easily hear the excitement in my voice. Show us some love: Abonniert den Podcast kostenlos bei iTunes, folgt uns auf Facebook und empfehlt uns euren Freunden!
