Locks' exhibition operates as a split composition: the back gallery leans into layered, exploratory collage rooted in his teaching experience with Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project at Stateville Correctional Center, while the front gallery delivers sharper, declarative works built around text and figuration. The conversation frames this as a kind of A-side / B-side logic, with one space functioning like improvisational jazz and the other like a stripped-down, urgent punk track. Locks pushes back on easy analogies, but embraces the underlying idea: that both bodies of work are driven by different modes of attention and response. A major thread is process. Locks describes an almost anti-archival system of working, where stacks of Xeroxes, prints, and sampled sounds are mentally cataloged rather than digitally organized. This produces a practice grounded in rediscovery and accident, closer to crate-digging than database searching. Equally central is pedagogy. His decade-plus engagement with incarcerated students becomes a generative force, not a side project. The "homework" he assigns becomes his own studio method, expanding into the work shown here and into related musical output like List of Demands. Throughout, Locks positions his work within a lineage that moves fluidly between comic books, punk ephemera, Black radical print culture, and contemporary art. The result is a practice that refuses clean categorization, operating instead as an ongoing negotiation between sound, image, politics, and community. In this episode of Car Con Carne, James heads to downtown Joliet to step inside a three-story vault of local musical history. He sits down with founder Ron Romero to explore how a "germ of an idea" from 2012 evolved into the Illinois Rock & Roll Museum on Route 66. Why you should listen: The "Underdog" Location: Discover why this massive project planted its roots in Joliet rather than Chicago, and how it's helping revitalize the "crossroads of Mid-America." Redefining the Hall of Fame: Learn about the museum's "all music is connected" philosophy—from Mavis Staples to Naked Raygun—and how they are using a community Wiki to honor every band in Illinois history. Preserving the Future: It's not just a collection of gear. Get a sneak peek at the museum's lower-level recording studios and classrooms designed to train the next generation of roadies, engineers, and rock stars. The Gear: Hear the stories behind artifacts from REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, Styx, and the legendary Chicago Blues scene. Don't miss: James will be spinning a 100% Illinois-minted set at Gallery Cabaret in Bucktown on Wednesday, April 22, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. ### Car Con Carne is sponsored by Exploding House Printing. Exploding House Printing is here for all of your screen printing, embroidery and other merchandising needs. They're local, and they focus on small businesses, bands, brands, and everything in between. And Jonathan, the guy behind Exploding House, has you covered. Songs discussed in this episode: Where You Live - Naked Raygun; Say Something - Government Issue; Wait For The Blackout - The Damned; Pacific 231 - Burning Airlines; Soft Focus - T.S.O.L.; Jaded Eyes - Government Issue; Ignite - The Damned; Treason - Naked Raygun; Beyond, Man In A Trap, Caring Line, Young Love, Where You Live, Wishing, Public Stage, World, You and I, Hole In The Scene, Melancholy Miss - Government Issue - Looking For A Kiss - New York Dolls; Where You Live - Naked Raygun
Some have claimed that Freud thought the Irish were impervious to therapy. While we may never know if he actually said that — we know for goddamn sure that John Haggerty is impervious to any of Scott's lines of questioning. But that's okay. Like all great heroes, John's stoicism belies a heart of gold beating with generosity, fairness, and a firm belief in the human collective. Did we mention that he's also a hell of a guitar player? On this episode we try to get Mr. Haggerty to talk to us about Pegboy, Naked Raygun, the Chicago punk scene, Steve Albini, Stratocasters, Herb Rosen, O'Banion's, disco duds, plumbers, Renaissance faires, and the loneliness of saxophone playing guitarists.
It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a true recording innovator and master of his craft: the amazing Mr. Steve Albini. Our good friend and fellow podcasting brother, Chris L joins us from the awesome Pod Of Thunder podcast. We knew we needed someone who represented the region of the country Steve was from and where he did most of his work; a magical faraway place called Chicagoland. Chris was a musician in the Chicago scene in the 90s when Albini's “production” was soaring, and his recordings were impacting the rock and alternative world hugely. This a tough loss, as Albini's ability to capture the true essence of a real rock n' roll band was second to none.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace, Steve. The sounds of recorded drums will never be the same!Songs this week include:Bodhisattva – “Broken” from Bodhisattva (1993)Big Black – “Bad Penny” from Songs About Fucking (1987)Urge Overkill – “Lineman” from Wichita Lineman (1987)Pegboy – “Never A Question” from Fore (EP) (1993)Shellac – “My Black Ass” from At Action Park (1994)Spy – “Way Inside” from Spy (2005)Foxy Shazam – “Shoe Box” from GONZO (2014)The Mean Reds – “A Little Truth” from CRC Demo (1996)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

As we talk, we dig into the sandwiches that everyone is talking about: Hermosa's Cambodian fried chicken sandwiches. Before you even listen or watch, take the time to order ahead and get one of them in your belly this week. This is a “top five” sandwich for Chicago; no exaggeration. Ethan's story, history and perspectives are refreshing, and I think you'll enjoy hearing what he has to say. As for the Leo Graphics team: Jamie and Deb are a blast to hang out with. We talked about their independent print shop business, which fuels and supports the local music community. They explain the process and economics behind their work in making record jackets (they share highlights from the likes of King Gizzard and Vortis), and the benefits of focusing on smaller-batch orders. They also shared examples of the work they do on physical records; if you're watching the video version, you'll love seeing what they did for artists like Naked Raygun and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. The Leo Graphics chat came to a crescendo when Jamie and Deb show what they brought for “show and tell”: Car Con Carne stickers of all sizes & a cool banner! They do fantastic work, and if you're looking for print work: signs, album jackets, decals, drum heads, stickers … whatever … give them a shout! Jamie and Deb are also in 13 Monsters. If you see this in time, check them out at Cary's Lounge (2251 W Devon Ave) on Saturday, May 11! Car Con Carne (a Q101 podcast) is presented by Alex Ross Art. It's legend time again around here at the LIFERS podcast. Of all the bands to emerge from the punk explosion of the late ‘70s, few were as adept at fusing melody and fury in quite the same way that the great Stiff Little Fingers were. Seminal in every way, SLF would go on to influence Naked Raygun, Green Day, and pretty much every punk band that ever cared to carry a tune. This week we welcome the voice of that band —a one Mr. Jake Burns— to tell us about growing up in Belfast, seeing Rory Gallagher on TV, soccer, getting a call from Pete Townsend, touring with the Tom Robinson Band, Eric Clapton and Rock Against Racism, soccer, KT's Kids, Sir Kenny Branagh, moving to Chicago, moving to West Virginia, soccer, and how to cut down on touring without quitting.
The Bollweevils is a punk band from Chicago. They formed during the Naked Raygun era which was where the band members met and also, for whom they eventually opened. The group released a number of albums on Dr. Strange Records; though, their first, minor releases were on Underdog Records (Chicago). The group's current record label, Go Deaf Records LLC, is owned and operated by the band. The Bollweevils released a new album, "Essential," on Red Scare Industries in 2023. It was their first album release in 14 years. These guys have come up a lot in interviews so I thought it would be awesome to talk to Daryl, he agreed, and this is what we chat about: Playing with the Adolescents Making the newer version of Bottomless Pit Naked Raygun Getting on Dr Strange face to face Never playing the Metro again Getting kicked off Riot Fest The ABC7 appearance Why the latest record isn't on Dr. Strange And a ton more Feel free to support the podcast for as little as $1 a month through Patreon
Pierre Kezdy was a staple of the Chicago Punk scene for more than 25 years. Beginning in the early 80's with Strike Anywhere Kezdy made his mark with his distinctive bass playing and melodic songwriting. His work with Naked Raygun across classic albums from 1986's “All Rise” through 1990's “Rayun…Naked Raygun" would cement his legacy and joining ex-Raygun guitarist John Haggerty for several Pegboy albums further confirmed the high regard that he was held in throughout the Windy City. We sadly lost Pierre to cancer in 2020. He was only 58. To celebrate his life through the music of Naked Raygun a number of Chicago area bands put together this compilation to support his late wife and children with all proceeds going to the family. You can contribute and help support the Kezdy family by buying it on BandCamp: https://godspeed-tribute.bandcamp.com/album/godspeed-a-tribute-to-pierre-kezdy-of-naked-raygun. RIP Pierre. Naked Raygun is one of the greatest bands to ever “whoa whoa” their way onto a Chicago stage, and their influence continues to loom large on the generations that follow in their footsteps. With that, a new Raygun tribute compilation is on the way: “Godspeed… A Tribute to Pierre Kezdy.” Scheduled for release on July 28, the album features NR covers from the likes of Face to Face, and J. Robbins. Also featured on the comp are a “who's who” of former Car Con Carne guests, including Josh Caterer, Pegboy, the Bollweevils, the Methadones, the Brokedowns and Death and Memphis. All proceeds from the project go to the family of Pierre Kezdy, who passed away in 2020. The guys behind the compilation, Curt Harrison (the Usuals) and Pat Mineau (Grey Trash Aliens), jumped in the car to talk about putting the project together, as well as the impact of Naked Raygun's music. Oh, and there's food in this episode … wonderful food from the recently-opened Rogue's Corner in Elgin (109 E. Highland). Owner Matt Habib shared a handful of his pizza originals, including Pipe n Wrench (Italian beef, sausage, giardiniera) and Jury Rig (Mac & Cheese + Sloppy Joe). Matt was also comfortable and happy to offer his thoughts on Naked Raygun; he's a fan just like the rest of us. Naked Raygun will do a rare signing event at Rogue's Corner on August 26 at 1 p.m., where they'll sign “Godspeed” records and merch. ### Car Con Carne is proud to be sponsored by Alex Ross Art (alexrossart.com). San Diego Comic Con is fast approaching. If you're going, make sure to visit Alex Ross Art while you're there (Booth 2415)!

If you like music, Chicago culture and kickass tavern food, this is your episode. Photographer Gene Ambo joins me to talk about his massive new coffee table book, “HEAVY METRO: ACCESS ALL ERAS.” The book covers 40 years of live music on and off the legendary stage of Chicago's Metro (3730 N. Clark Street). The book is a mind-blowing collection of performance and backstage shots, including metal giants Slayer, Metallica and Motorhead; alternative superstars Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, Ramones, Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers; and punk heroes like Naked Raygun and Descendents. We talk about the stories behind the shots, and the moods and the attitudes of the artists in the pictures. This episode was fueled by the insanely good burgers at Circle Tavern (18 Conti Parkway, Elmwood Park). Owner/all around kickass dude Mike Jardine jumped in the backseat to join in the conversation and talk about Circle Tavern's menu and history. No joke: The double burgers are completely legit and worth a trip to Elmwood Park. Now is the time to go solar! Introducing Transparent Solar.
