Sarah Montague speaks to former Catholic priest Oliver McTernan who has spent more than two decades working in conflict resolution in the Middle East. He is the director of the organisation Forward Thinking and was involved in negotiations that led to the release of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2011. While he has no formal role in the current talks over the war in Gaza, he regularly speaks to senior figures in both Hamas and the Israeli government. Given the history of this protracted conflict, does he hold any hope that it will ever be resolved?

A lot of work in moral, political, and legal theory aims to define the offensive. Surprisingly, relatively little attention has been paid to the affectively intoned practice of taking offense. One consequence of this inattention is that discussion of offense-taking usually occurs within the context of popular culture critique, where many commentators lament that people today are too easily offended or take offence at too many things. The prevailing thought is that taking offence is usually morally and socially pernicious. Emily McTernan disagrees. In On Taking Offence (Oxford 2023), she develops a novel conception of what it is to take offence, why taking offence is an essential part of our moral and social repertoire, and when the disposition to take offence is an expression of civic virtue. (*both laugh*) is somehow up to 58 episodes, but we're still having fun and some of y'all seem to still enjoy it, so we'll keep rolling! This episode finds us catching up with the great Brian McTernan again. McTernan was the guest on Episode 15 a couple of years ago, in the lead-up to the debut Be Well album, "The Weight And The Cost." Next Friday (May 20th if you're reading this in the future), Be Well is back with a brand new album! It's a six-song EP called "Hello Sun," and it finds the band expanding the sonic palette that I thought they had perfected on "TW&TC." It's really great and personal and haunting and melodic and everything you want form a post-hardcore record (or whatever, I don't get labels) and more. We talk an awful lot about the new album and the musical directions. In a bit of unexpected synchronicity, May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, and Brian is no stranger to talking about his struggles with depression and alcohol use and more, as is pretty obvious if you listened to the last album. We talk about that, but about how the new album, while "dark," isn't dark for dark's sake; it's written from the perspective of someone who has moved through the darkness and worked towards a newfound light. Thus, "Hello Sun." We also talked a lot about the newest Hot Water Music Record, "Feel The Void." After having worked on "A Flight And A Crash" and "Caution" and "The New What Next" roughly two decades ago, McTernan found himself both reconnected with the now five-piece band during the early days of the Covid lockdown and at the helm of "Feel The Void." It was a fascinating time in that band's history and produced an important album, and McTernan's work (and point of view) are invaluable. And we talk a lot about their upcoming tour dates, and there are a TON of them on both sides of the Atlantic, including a lengthy run with New Found Glory and a UK/EU jaunt with Hot Water Music and Samiam. On today's edition of Flashback Fridays, the 21st installment if my math is correct, I wanted to highlight a record from 2020. Last year. A crazy year for so many. The pandemic year. But there were some silver linings that came along with the year 2020, and one of them is the fact that a lot of fantastic music was released in the year 2020. There were so many great releases from the year, that it honestly was difficult choosing an album to highlight. A good problem to have I suppose. The album that I chose is an album by the band Be Well. Be Well is an American hardcore punk band, formed in 2019 in Baltimore, Maryland. The group was formed by members of various bands including Bane, Only Crime, Darkest Hour, Fairweather, Ashes, Battery, Olympia, Beasts of No Nation, and Converge.[1] The group signed to Equal Vision Records in December 2019[2] and released its debut album, The Weight and the Cost, through the label in August 2020. The singer is the legendary Brian McTernan. Brian is also a record producer. McTernan operates a studio called Salad Days in Baltimore, named after the Minor Threat song of the same name, and has produced albums for a number of notable artists, including Thrice, Circa Survive, Turnstile, and Hot Water Music. The lyrics on this Be Well record are phenomenal. Raw, brutal, and honest. I love this record. I can't wait to hear their next record.

Brian McTernan needs no introduction, but we'll give him one anyway. Brian is a producer and musician whose work in the alternative scene has influenced some of the most notable records of the last twenty years. Everyone from Texas Is The Reason to Darkest Hour, Circa Survive, Sharptooth, and more owe a few thanks to Brian for his work behind the boards. But like all great creatives, Brian has stories he wants to share, and that's what people get on the new album from his incredible hardcore band, Be Well. The heavier side of alternative music is sometimes written off as being reserved for young people. When teenage angst meets the struggle to survive adulthood, creativity blossoms in a unique way that often expresses itself through heavy music. Many of the greatest hardcore albums are written by people in their late teens and early twenties who are speaking to experiences recognized by their peers. Those same listeners age, just like the musicians, but the embrace of heavy music often fades along the way. Be Well is an exception. While their music can and will inspire young listeners, the band's work speaks directly to the lives of those deep into adulthood. The group's latest record, The Weight And The Cost, tackles the frustrations of parenting alongside the constant struggle to understand ourselves. It's in McTernan's ability to speak on both topics that magic is found, and the resulting recordings are sure to provide comfort to many during these uncertain times. On this episode of Inside Music, Brian chats with host James Shotwell about his history in production and how the challenges of creative expression change with age. The pair also discuss the influence of Brian's former band, Battery, as well as the way his work will be remembered in the years to co

Is America on a collision course with God? There is a direct correlation between the alarming number of massive disasters striking America and her leaders pressuring Israel to surrender her land for "peace." Costing hundreds of lives and causing hundreds of billions of dollars' damage, dozens of disasters including devastating earthquakes, raging fires, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, and violent tornadoes have hit America–and always within twenty–four hours of putting pressure on Israel. What can you do as an individual––and what can America do––to change the direction of our country in relation to Israel and prevent the increasing number of calamities? God’s everlasting promise to bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel is still in effect today. Throughout its history, America has been in a unique position to bless the Jewish people, and has experienced many blessings as a result. In more recent years, however, America has failed to consistently stand by Israel and suffered dramatic disasters. In this interesting and thorough book, McTernan traces the history of the Jewish people in America and how America’s spectacular rise to power was tied to blessing the Jews. He examines America’s integral role in fulfilling God’s plan for the rebirth of the Jewish nation, and details the times when our nation defaulted on this call. Through a step–by–step analysis of political events, McTernan gives conclusive proof that God’s judgment on those who curse Israel is still active. In every case where America has failed Israel, it has faced dramatic consequences within 24 hours. John P. McTernan is a lifetime student of American history, and has studied biblical prophecy since becoming a Christian in the early 1970s. He authored the acclaimed God's Final Warning to America and co–authored the best seller Israel: The Blessing or the Curse. Through numerous appearances on television, radio, and in seminars, McTernan regularly defends Israel in light of biblical prophecy. In 1974, John became involved with the Pro–Life Movement and is a Pro–Life leader in central Pennsylvania. He co–founded International Cops for Christ, where he serves as an ordained chaplain. He served as a US Treasury agent for twenty–six years before retiring in 1998. He holds a B.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is married and has four children.
