A deep dive into the complexities, chaos and change we face in our personal and professional lives and the importance of trust, respect and self-confidence.In this episode, Di talks with the inimitable thought leader, Dr Desley Lodwick. The phrase that defines Desley and she lives by is, her best is yet to come. A powerful phrase, and as we age an unbelievably uplifting take on life.We discuss the reality that we are dealing with complexity much of the time within organisations at lower & lower levels, and interestingly, Desley has found people don't understand the difference between complicated and complex. Historically our jobs were complicated, however nowadays they are not merely complicated but becoming increasingly more complex. There is always a solution for a complication, however it is the complexity that presents us with issues we simply cannot solve. This is true in our personal lives too. It's not all bad news though when faced with this complexity, as we can make progress that steers us in the direction we want to go. We just have to be willing to change. Desley's book, Ethically Deviant: An Unconventional Guide for Leaders to Supercharge Progress in Times of Complexity, Chaos & Change is due for release later this year.Great insights from another fabulous female I have had the privilege of talking with on the Power Of Women podcast.I have to tell you, I absolutely love what I do. Auckland Council and the Government are working on a plan designed to lessen the impact of extreme weather events on roads. They're working on a plan which would see roads that are commonly hit moved to safer ground. Auckland Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson says there aren't a list of roads yet. She explained that the $6 billion pledged to the idea isn't a waste. "Because it sounds a lot of money, but actually it's not a lot if it's over many, many years. We need to do this work now." There's relief now the sun's shining above Auckland, but the region isn't out of the wet yet. Auckland is still in a state of emergency after Friday's deluge, which closed roads, caused slips, and toppled homes. Auckland Council says more than 2300 rapid building assessments have been completed since Saturday. More than 160 homes have been red-stickered - meaning they aren't safe to enter - and over 650 buildings have restricted access. It's estimated up to 6000 properties still need to be assessed. Deputy mayor Desley Simpson says it's hard to judge when the city will be back to normal because of the extent of the damage, particularity in the Northern and Western regions, but hundreds of people are out there helping. The evacuations are continuing in Auckland after another night of heavy rain. Auckland remains in a state of emergency, with an Orange Heavy Rain Warning and Heavy Thunderstorm Warning still in effect. Fire crews have been been busy with about 30 rescues and call-outs overnight, and four homes in the west Auckland suburb of Titirangi have been evacuated due to further slips. At least 30 homes have been red-stickered, and about 45 arterial routes and local roads are closed across the region. Auckland Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson says that it's not getting any better. Heavy rain is also battering Northland this morning. Northland Civil Defence is urging people to remain alert for flooding. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland experienced record-breaking rainfall last Friday and is forecast to receive more by the end of today. Auckland mayor Wayne Brown placed the region in a State of Emergency after the rain resulted in widespread flooding, slips, power cuts, and property damage. Wayne Brown's response to the extreme weather has come under fire, as the State of Emergency wasn't declared until after 10pm on Friday. Auckland deputy mayor Desley Simpson says that the communication around the extreme rainfall could have been better, but both the mayor and Prime Minister Chris Hipkins will be launching a detailed investigation into this. Desley from Regina, SK joins me on this episode of Moony Birth Stories to share her two pregnancy and birth stories. Desley and her partner Allen took two months to get pregnant with their first baby and since Desley had done some research prior to conceiving and wanted a homebirth, she knew she'd need to apply for a midwife immediately. She was able to get in with midwifery care and moved forward with her plans for a home water birth. After an enjoyable pregnancy, labour started on it's own at home. She was able to labour at home until the very end when stalled pushing led to the recommendation of a transfer to hospital and everything went quickly from there. At 9 months postpartum, Desley and Allen got an unexpected surprise when they discovered they were pregnany with their second. This pregnancy same with more challenges and Desley's plans for a home waterbirth remained the same. She shares how this birth ultimately ended in hospital transfer as well and how she coped with a more challenging postpartum.
When he was elected as Auckland mayor, Wayne Brown was quick to come out of the blocks to say rate rises must be avoided. He said he wanted to reduce the pressure on young and lower-income home owners, who can least afford it. Now less than 2 months into his new job... and he's proposing to put rates up by 4.66%! That would means a household with $1.4 million dollars of property capital would pay an additional $154 dollars a year, roughly $3 a week. Deputy mayor Desley Simpson joins us to talk through rates!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland mayor Wayne Brown has announced councillor Desley Simpson as his deputy. Simpson is the councillor for the Ōrākei ward which covers Mission Bay, Kohimarama, St Heliers, and Remuera. Brown says Delsey Simpson was not only his pick, but has the support of other councillors.
Newly-named deputy mayor of Auckland Desley Simpson has confirmed there was an expression of interest made by a company to take over the operation of Ports of Auckland. Mayor Wayne Brown says any foreign operators would be wasting their time submitting proposals for a takeover. The mayor wants some of the port land freed up for Aucklanders to enjoy - but he, and other councillors are staunchly opposed to any kind of sell off. Reporter Tom Taylor has the story.

The ALP (Australian Labor Party) won the election, however, to date whether the new government is able to govern in their own right or govern as a minority government is yet to be determined (Thursday 26/5/2022). Desley and Susan discuss: Labor's win as the governing major party. Some of the federal electorial seats, i.e. Lyons in Tasmania and Gilmore in NSW are still too close to call. (Latest update is that the sitting Labor Member for Lyons, Brian Mitchell, is maintaining a small lead. In the seat of Gilmore, the Liberal Candidate has the slimest majority of just over 100 votes ahead of Fiona Phillips the 2019 - 2022 Labor MP. A correction we must make is that to date Peter Dutton (mentioned about 7 minutes into the discussion) has as yet to be elected as the leader for the Liberal Party. Carol chats with Desley about Montessori Early Childhood
Brigitte MacGowan originally quit her job in agency world to join husband Hamish’s business, a wine company that make the very successful ‘Angus the Bull’ range. But it was while on maternity leave and through a chance meeting at mothers group with now best mate Desley Maidment that ‘State of Escape’ was born. The brands signature ‘Escape bag’ soon earned cult status here in Australian and now seven years on the iconic neoprene tote bag is a much-loved fashion staple the world over. The entire State of Escape range is proudly designed and made in Australia. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Brigitte & Desley story and I am sure you will too. I also throughly approve of Brigitte's choice of Australian Hall Pass!www.stateofescape.comInstagr@stateofescape See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Desley Hegney And Mark Cragie talk about resilience in nursing
The election season is nearing the end. It's put up or shut up time for campaigns. If you have mud to sling, sling it now, and races in cities all over the East Bay are getting ugly just in the past few days. I'll break down one such race, give you a brief projection for the Oakland City Council District 6 race with Councilmember Desley Brooks. In Alameda, the mayor is off to China for six days as her re-election campaign its the final two weeks, and I'll talk about the hilarious negative ad in the 15th Assembly District campaign. Later, I sit down with Union City Council candidate Jaime Patiño, who is running in a race next month for three open seats. Listen to the podcast a day earlier by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, or wherever you download podcasts. And listen on EBCitizen.com
Watergate in Hayward? A robber broke into council candidate Aisha Wahab's car and stole campaign materials, but left a cigarillo in the car. Meanwhile, every smoker in Hayward politics appears to be a suspect. In The Breakdown, I take a look at the Oakland District 6 council race and how all of Desley Brooks' challengers appear to be scared to actually challenge her. Then, in the Hot Seat, I chat with Union City council candidate Harris Mojadedi.
Premiere Week continues with the realization that Oakland Councilmember Desley Brooks insists that reporters meet her at Eastmont Mall and jumped into her aging Lexus for interviews. Plus, in The Breakdown, Steve looks at the 15th Assembly District race and how each candidates performed at the recent Alameda County Democratic Central Committee post-primary endorsement meeting last week. Listen to Steve Tavares Is Angry episodes this week Tuesday-Friday at EBCitizen.com or Subscribe on iTunes and Stitcher. Also, become an East Bay Citizen supporter at paypal.me/EastBayCitizen
It's Thanksgiving week and what better topic is there than giving thanks to the person who blazed the podcasting trail for the East Bay Citizen Show. Hayward born and raised Matt Santos drops in from Prescott, Ariz. to chat about his podcast and we walk down memory lane to reminisce about...Wait a minute. Santos is really on the show to talking about me! About the time I ran for the Chabot College student president while serving as the newspaper's Editor-in-Chief, my rousing campaign speech, the college's fry cook/bookie and his advice for taking the Cowboys even though back-up QB Gary Hogeboom was subbing for the great Danny White, or was it Randy White? Also, in the news, what's might happen to Oakland Councilmember Desley Brooks after an allegation was reported last week that she assaulted former Black Panther icon Elaine Brown at a restaurant in Oakland? Probably nothing, but the allegation brings to light Brooks' notorious behavior over the past 14 years in office.
