Juan Whiting is a 4th-generation farmer, ag entrepreneur, author, and a seasoned expert in navigating the often-complicated world of grant writing and agricultural funding. From working with the Conflict and Development Foundation in East Africa to leading his own consulting company, Stray Acres LLC, Juan has a unique passion for linking farmers, ranchers, and their partners to the funding they need to build better environments, communities, and food systems. As a 4th generation farmer and an ag entrepreneur, Juan has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. Grants have provided a stable foundation to innovate, lead, and build operations even when cashflow was limited. Grant writing started as a job as he led funded projects for the Conflict and Development Foundation in East Africa, it became a source of funding for his own farm management company, and today it is a passion, as he leads top industry leaders and high performing teams in their pursuit of funding with his consulting company, Stray Acres LLC. He spent over 8 years in East Africa working on community and agricultural related projects. Juan is deeply passionate about linking farmers, ranchers and their partners to the funding and support they need to improve their environments, build communities, and strengthen food systems. Whether it is a small community garden or a full-scale ranching operation, there is a story to be told and organizations with the funds to make it a reality. Juan proudly serves as an Agricultural Specialist/Civil Affairs officer in the US Army. He contributes to the army's mission and objectives of winning hearts and minds overseas and promoting the American way of life by feeding empty stomachs. When he is not pushing revolutions in the ag industry, Juan is spending time with his beautiful wife and 5 kids homeschooling, cooking, road tripping or simply connecting with the outdoors the way it was meant to be. If you'd like to learn more about Juan's work with Stray Acres LLC or his holistic funding approach, check out his book, The Holistic Funding Approach, available on Amazon. In February 2024, The Blockchain Builders Association Ghana hosted the team at Stellar Development Foundation, led by Dixon Denelle in Accra, who is the CEO of the Stellar development foundation in February. The Stellar Development Foundation is a nonprofit organisation based in San Francisco. They are building a common financial platform, designed to be open and accessible to everyone. Their mission is open source financial access for all. Stellar has great uses cases in Ghana and in Africa including Cross border payments, smart contracts and remittances. LemFi is allowed to trade again in Ghana after being forbidden by the Bnak of Ghana due to a lack of an official license to operate in the country. Dr Bauwmia, whos' currently the vice president of Ghana, who is running as an NPP leader for the 2024 elections in Ghana, has promised to scrap e-levy and emissions tax if he wins. Mike Tarantino, President & CEO of the Iberia Industrial Development Foundation, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss the recent business developments which will change the trajectory of growth for Iberia Parish and all of Acadiana. Passionate and well-spoken about business development and the need for all community leaders in the business and government sectors to speak with one voice if they want to attract top level investment in the region, Mike loves Iberia Parish and spoke eloquently and enthusiastically about all of the newest developments while never stopping once to look at written notes. Mike Tarantino is a New Orleans native that moved to New Iberia with his family in the mid-70's. He graduated from Catholic High School of New Iberia and never left. Mike previously served as interim director of the Acadiana Regional Airport and received the Richard E. Baudoin, Jr. Friend of Business Award in 2018 from the Junior Achievement of Acadiana Business Hall of Fame. The Iberia Industrial Development Foundation is a 501(c)(6) business investor organization. Its board is comprised of both public and private sector individuals. "Half of the board comes from the public sector such as our Parish President, all of the mayors in the towns of Iberia Parish, the Director of the Port of Iberia, the Director of the Acadiana Regional Airport, and the Superintendent of Iberia Parish Schools, while the other half consists of private business leaders. It's a place where private businesses and government come together to discuss plans for the future. We're the folks that cast the line to get people interested in coming to our area. It has a different mission from a traditional chamber in that it is focused on professional economic development." Mike believes that economic development is a team sport. "It is very competitive and takes a well-honed team as well as the private and public sector working hand in hand. You have to be singing from the same sheet of music, working from the same game plan. When you market your community, many times the investors have already researched your community. Having a united front to put your best foot forward is the first step in attracting big business." Iberia Parish is poised for growth, especially given its assets such as the Port of Iberia which offers a 2000 acre industrial and manufacturing site, its location along Highway 90/Future I-49 corridor which runs right through the parish, and the Acadiana Regional Airport, the former Naval Auxiliary Air Station surrounded by 2500 acres of developable property. The Acadiana Gulf Access Channel is currently undergoing a dredging process to deepen its access channel from 13 feet to 20 feet in depth...a huge increase which will allow heavier traffic in from the Gulf of Mexico. Iberia Industrial Development Foundation President & CEO Mike Tarantino with First Solar CEO Mark Widmar and Iberia Parish President M. Larry Richard (Courtesy: First Solar). " Lafayette and Iberia Parishes share a workforce with a population of approximately 600,000 people who traverse the region. What positively affects one parish also positively affects the other. 2023 has been a very busy and productive year in Iberia Parish with a number of new developments taking shape that present great potential for growth in Acadiana. The biggest announcement recently was the news of First Solar investing $1.3 Billion in a 2.3 million square foot facility at the Acadiana Regional Airport, its largest latest generation solar panel facility in the Western Hemisphere. 700 to 1,000 jobs will be created at First Solar, with a starting salary of $80,000. Mike credited UL - Lafayette's engineering department, especially Dr. Terry Chambers of the Department of Mechanical Engineering who works with UL's Photovoltaic (converting sunlight into electricity) Applied Research Lab, along with Dr. Mark Zappi and Dr. Ramesh Kolluru, for helping attract this facility.

Everyone will learn something from this episode. Last week, I had the honor of speaking with Jean Lee Batrus. Jean is the Executive Director of the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation (YDF). YDF is a joint initiative by Major League Baseball and the Players Association to support efforts that focus on improving the caliber, effectiveness and availability of amateur baseball and softball programs across the United States and internationally. From local-based programs to the Hank Aaron Invitational and HBCU Swingman Classic, the foundation helps make youth baseball and softball more accessible – creating economic opportunities, strengthening communities, and building character – on and off the field.I spoke to Jean about her role at YDF, and how they strategically change communities through access to baseball. It's a fascinating conversation. Everyone interested in revitalizing a community through baseball or even just offering baseball access to kids that don't have local stability should tune in from start to finish. Please rater and review this episode. Share it with a friend, and leave a comment. Your support goes a long way to growing the Black Baseball Mixtape.

Stellar Global Radio with Sam: Exploring the Stellar Blockchain and Beyond
Soroban, the developer preview of the new SmartContract platform is NOW LIVE! It's a unique opportunity for developers to influence the new platform in it's infancy! Stellar Development Foundation's VP of Tech Strategy Tomer Weller swings by to give us a quick breakdown on the new platform, the origin of the name Sorobon, what you can do and where you can get plugged in as you begin to explore potential use cases for smart contracts within your own projects. More on Soroban: "....With this preview, developers can write and test contracts on their local machine without depending on a running network. It focuses on contract development, rather than complete dApp development. This means that, for example, you can write and test a liquidity pool contract, but not (yet) a full liquidity pool app that indexes and consumes trade data. You can now write contracts with initial versions of the Soroban environment, SDK, and CLI. There are also some early Docs and Examples to help get you started. In the next few iterations, we will be introducing an events system, indexing service, better gas metering, a Stellar Core integration, and much more. This is the first time in the history of the SDF in which we are releasing such an early preview. We're doing it because we believe that we're building something special with Soroban, and true to our open-source roots, we believe it's important to share the development process. We want Stellar ecosystem developers and smart contract developers from other ecosystems to have a chance to make a meaningful impact together. Put another way, we want your feedback! Test it out, see what you can do, and let us know what you think. But don't forget this is a preview. Expect your code to break, realize that updates will shift things, and understand that the release version of Soroban may be a significantly changed product. Today we're speaking with the head of ecosystem at the Stellar Development Foundation, Justin Rice. He'll walk us through the Stellar ecosystem and what role the foundation plays in it all. What Is Stellar? Stellar is a platform that connects all the world's currencies. Any currency or asset can be represented and easily connected to it's underlying value. Stellar is open source as well as open participation, meaning anyone can easily create, send, or trade digital currency. Programs, products, and entrepreneurs are all represented in the ecosystem. The native token of Stellar are lumens and each account is required to hold a few lumens at all times to participate. In addition, a small per-transaction fee is used to discourage any large-scale bad behavior. What is the Role of the Foundation? Stellar Development Foundation is a non-profit that exists to support the development and growth of the Stellar network. The foundation is able to help maintain the codebase as well as the people building on it. The foundation supports technical and business communities, as well as representing Stellar to regulators and institutions. What is an Anchor? Think of an anchor as a local on/off-ramp. They connect traditional banking to the Stellar network so that all the world's currencies can interoperate on a single platform and in a seamless manner. We know that conventional banking systems are old school and have a lot of friction when it comes to converting certain assets, especially those that aren't as liquid. Stellar Development aims to solve the inequality created by financial institutes while making things easier for its users. Therefore, building on Stellar is just good business. The Stellar Team With Stellar being open source, there are hundreds of companies and thousands of people in the ecosystem. In terms of Stellar's actual team, they sit at about 80 members, up from only about 15 a year and a half ago. Stellar has an array of goals and outlined areas they are focused on, all which can be found at stellar.org/foundation/mandates. Some of these include direct developments, ecosystem support, and user acquisition. Each focus area has different initiatives to support it, with lumens distributed to achieve these goals. To learn more about Stellar, please visit stellar.org and explore the ‘Learn' and ‘Ecosystem' sections. -- Divi is creating the world's first closed-loop, vertically-integrated cryptocurrency ecosystem.
