Venues visited: The Toast Collective was a "grassroots nerve centre for new bands, art movements, community projects, and activism," which started around 2010. It was located at 648 Kingsway and when it closed its doors in 2021 the space for run for a few years by a new veture, called 648 Kingsway, which has now closed down. Lucky's Comics was a comic and bookstore at 3972 Main Street which has now relocated eight blocks north. After a hiatus of many years at the original location, the new location is now hosting some hows. Little Mountain Gallery was at 195 E 26th Ave built in 1930. It became an art space known as the Butchershop Collective in 2001 and Little Mountain Gallery was established in 2006. After music shows ended, it became an underground comedy club. It was demolished in 2023 despite the attempts of arts groups to preserve it. Arrancamos nuestra selección musical desde el profundo Kentucky con Tyler Childers, un jornalero de la música que mezcla el country, el bluegrass y el folk, su padre trabajaba en una mina de carbón, y en sus canciones son habituales las referencias a los mineros y al ambiente de su infancia. El 18 de septiembre de 2020, Childers lanzó "Long Violent History"m un álbum sorpresa que consta principalmente de pistas de violín tradicionales. Compartimos con vosotros "Long Violent History", el tema central del álbum, una canción original que trata sobre el racismo, los disturbios civiles y la brutalidad policial. Necesitamos bailar, por eso compartimos otra novedad; “Lifetime”, el single de debut de Romy Madley-Croft la guitarrista y voz de The xx, un tema pop altamente bailable y que va directo a las pistas de baile. Compuesta y grabada en Londres durante la cuarentena, es una canción que habla del sueño de volver a reunirse con los amigos, la familia, con todos aquellos a los que queremos, capturando la euforia de poder estar juntos nuevamente. Xiu Xiu son una banda de música experimental originaria de San José (California), un proyecto capitaneado por Jamie Stewart, el único componente que ha permanecido en la banda desde su formación en 2002. Nos vamos a Ecuador a Quito con Lolabúm, este año ha sido un año prolífico para la banda sudamericana con el lanzamiento de dos discos “Verte antes de fin de año” y “O clarividencia”, álbumes que ponen banda sonora a este aciago 2020. Suena “Misterio y comedia” un tema recién salido del horno y que nos ha encantado, una muestra de la interesante escena musical ecuatoriana. Es el momento de que suene la gran Chavela Vargas, ponemos una canción de su primer disco del año 1963, una canción muy importante en nuestra vida “No volveré”. Cuantas veces hemos dicho no volveré y finalmente hemos vuelto. Podríamos estar infinidad de programas comentando sólo esta canción, sólo decir que tremenda Chavela. Para el último viajamos hasta Montreal, pinchamos “T’es belle” de Coeur de Pirate (Corazón de Pirata) nombre artístico de Béatrice Martin, con 31 años ya tiene una amplia y exitosa trayectoria a sus espaldas .Su nueva canción viene etiquetada como "un himno feminista que es fiel a los tiempos y francamente estimulante, una canción protesta contra un patriarcado sofocante que dicta lo que las mujeres deben hacer y cómo. Sus letras subversivas chocan con su alegre ritmo pop y sentimiento country”. ▶️▶️ 38’12” la película que comentamos esta semana es “Cold War” del director polaco Pawel Pawlikowski, recorremos su exitosa y premiada filmografía, centrándonos especialmente en su dos última películas hasta la fecha “Ida” y “Cold War” ,que representaron un giro respecto a todo lo que había rodado hasta la fecha; en la temática significaron una vuelta a sus raíces, a lengua polaca y a una época histórica, la de la dictadura comunista, y en lo formal supusieron una auténtica revolución estética, rodadas en un preciosista blanco y negro y en formato 4:3, con abundancia de encuadres simétricos con muchísimo aire sobre los personajes en un intento de hacer una película atemporal y de forzar a los espectadores a ver la película de modo meditativo. Cold War es una historia de amor fatal, que narra en un bellísimo blanco y negro los encuentros y desencuentros de una pareja a lo largo del tiempo desde la Polonia de posguerra y la dictadura Comunista de los años cuarenta hasta el París bohemio de los cincuenta , ella una bomba voluptuosa que parece siempre a punto de estallar, el un posibilista, en realidad la historia de un par de supervivientes en tiempos difíciles para el amor.

Marie Davidson’s electronic music showcases elements of self confidence, detached humour, and open-hearted empathy. She developed the latter quality in the mid 2000s as a co-founder of the Montreal collectively run art space La Brique, which provided an early playground for artists such as Grimes, Dirty Beaches, and Tonstartssbandht. Davidson joined Xarah Dion in the experimental duo Les Momies de Palerme (Constellation Records) before founding Essaie Pas (DFA) with her husband Pierre Guerineau, and exploding as a solo artist. After touring worldwide to support her Ninja Tune debut Working Class Woman, she experienced a period of burnout, taking off the past 12 months as a sabbatical. In this conversation, Davidson hints at her upcoming return with a rock-based trio album set for release in fall 2020.

Dean Hurley talks to Third Of Never's Jon Dawson about his new album "Philosophy of Beyond", creating sound design for "Twin Peaks: The Return", and running David Lynch's recording studio. Hurley also sheds light on Angelo Badalamenti's participation in "The Return", why he left Los Angeles, and the path that led him there. From Sacred Bones Records: For over 12 years, sound and music supervisor Dean Hurley has exclusively operated Asymmetrical Studio, director David Lynch’s own film-dubbing and recording studio in Los Angeles. He has collaborated closely with Lynch on a myriad of his film, commercial, and music projects, including most recently Showtime’s 18-episode Twin Peaks: The Return. Hurley co-wrote and produced four full-length LPs with Lynch: The Air is on Fire (2007), This Train (2011), Crazy Clown Time (2011) and The Big Dream (2013) as well as serviced remixes for artists such as Duran Duran, Moby and Danish musician Agnes Obel. Hurley’s own music production has additionally extended to artists like Lykke Li, Dirty Beaches, Zola Jesus, and The Veils.

Being a low budget production, Stories About Music has had to rely on these for the past few episodes. Being a no budget production, we've also had to rely on musicians who know how to mic themselves. But not this time. When I went looking for Alex Zhang Hungtai, the voice and mind behind the cross-continental project Dirty Beaches, I found out he had just moved to LA, not far from where my friend Lorena was living. Lorena studied sound recording in college, so I sent her to meet Alex with a microphone so I could ask him some questions about his work–only to learn that Lorena was perhaps even more closely connected to the themes behind Alex's work than I knew.

For our second summer special, we've taken our own advice and journeyed out to the lakes and woods of South East Brandenburg. But before that, we start off in Berlin, where we talk about a new threat to affordable rent, another endangered East German building, why wearing a bike helmet can save you money, and how former Stasi informants make new careers under capitalism. Then we head out to Klingemühle, a former GDR holiday camp in the Naturpark Schlaubetal in Brandenburg. We meet its inhabitants, Buenaventura e.V, who tell us about the camp's history, what they're doing there and making the transition from Berlin to the countryside. Plus a child of the GDR talks to us about holidaying in the East and we have a chat with the organisers of Camp Tipsy, the DIY festival in a forest. They released their debut self-titled album a couple of years ago to much critical acclaim. That record was very much rooted in the 80s, with elements of post-punk, dream pop, twee, and the C86 sound. It was a very saccharine heart-on-the-sleeve album, but balanced those elements with some darker tones and distortion. The sophomore album, Belong out on Slumberland Records, builds on the first album's elements and takes them further with a BIG and slick wall of sound production style, courtesy of Flood and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode). The overall sound of this album is early 90s guitar pop-rock, though there are some synth-washed tracks that recall Modern English and The Cure. Belong is a big-sounding, shimmering and slick, heart-breakingly blissful record that glides along beautifully and is enjoyable, though cloying at times.
