Zer0 Rei came on "Hot Takes" this week to chat with us! A well respected musician and visual artist in the vaporwave scene, Zer0 Rei was someone we wanted to amplify and celebrate; and he clued us in about a lot of things during his episode, like his daily work ethic, his work with Desert Sand Feels Warm at Night, and his longtime love of Japanese noise rock band Melt-Banana. Starting with harsh noise music and bringing with him a wealth of experience in the live punk rock and metal scenes, Zer0 now not only runs a vaporwave and experimental music label but also produces his own music and designs hyperreal 3-D rendered graphics as well. He's multifaceted and full of knowledge and experience, so rapping with him for two hours was a delight! During the night, there were discussions about topics like the local art collectives he runs, his unique production method with MIDI files and samples within Ableton, and the differences between future funk and vaporfunk. The temperature went up noticeably as Zer0 Rei regaled us with his experience on HKE and Shima33's new defunct podcast. The trio groaned over shipping and warranty issues with boutique synths, the chat erupted in laughs as Zer0 presented on camera the giant goose plushie he received as a gift from his spouse for Christmas, and Shiro raged about artists' propensity to play unreleased material live but then never release it. If you weren't there live during our visit with Zer0 Rei, check it out! "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor
Hello, it's Trve. Cvlt. Pop!, a music podcast, here. Hope you're alright! On this week's show we go back to snaffle up even more of the cracking albums that were released in August and flob them back into your face in review form... not literally, that would be disgusting! But there's is perfectly hygienic chat about new releases from Doechii, Sofi Tukker, Charly Bliss, Zeal & Ardor, Melt-Banana, Thee Marloes and Swarmi John Reis. Plus we catch up on the music world having gone absolutely drunk on idiocy over the last few weeks, no Smiths reunion but a troublesome Linkin Park reunion? Yeah. Diddy... seems he did! Not that we really want to get into that quite yet.
On Episode 80 of Picky Bastards, we have new releases from Personal Trainer, Melt Banana, Hinds and Pom Poko. This month's classic album is A Trick of the Tail by Genesis and then host Sam tells us why he loves Treats by Sleigh Bells. Which albums were your favourites from the playlist? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
A month to the day the Nine Circles Audio Thing is back with our Album of the Month for August! The staff approached, their pitiful, mewling offerings raised with trembling hands in full view of the gnarled stonework to vie for the attentions and affections of the new Judge. But despite Hera's impassioned plea for the acidic sludge post metal of Norna, Angela's sadly tossed asides poetics to the virtue of black metal chameleons Zeal & Ardor, Colin's progressive medieval circus ride that is the latest from Sur Austru and Ian's gleeful presentation of the blackened speed thrash attack of Demiser the Demiser's Demiser the rose could only be gifted to one. And that one was Chris, who revelled in the hyper-glitchy grind punk noise rock of Melt-Banana, back with their first album in 11 years 3+5, a blizzard of wonder that races by in only 24 minutes. The gang gets in deep, with lots of talk about vocal tics and tremors, the increasingly silly labelling and confining our notions of what constitutes "heavy" or "extreme", and whether we can all kill Hera if we make her listen to enough thrash metal. There's also a lot of talk about what else we listened to in August, including a way too long conversation about how positively limp and punched in the long awaited(?) Time II from Wintersun is...you've been warned! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter (X) | Instagram

The first podcast ever with Melt-Banana !? Interview with Yako and Agata of Melt Banana. Melt-Banana is a Japanese noise rock band that is known for playing extremely fast noise rock and hardcore punk mixed with experimental, electronica and pop-based song structures. Since forming in 1992 the band has released ten albums and toured worldwide extensively. Besides making their music, MELT-BANANA hopes to empower and encourage their fans and fellow musicians by example. They've foregone the convention of a full band line-up for over a decade and recorded and toured as a two-piece since 2012. Yako's wildly careening, staccato vocals ignore every convention of Pop and Alternative singing, guided solely by her own unique artistic vision. For 25 years, they've been in the vanguard of bedroom players and Egg Punks facing the challenge of mixing homespun digital creations with live instrumentation head-on with consistently brilliant results. While Melt-Banana has explicitly explained the meaning behind the album's title, 3 + 5, prime numbers symbolize mathematical integrity and independence, which could represent? Even by our exacting standards, this episode of the Independent Music Podcast is out of this world. From experimental club music to DIY lofi garage rock, from Jewish folk music to airy baroque jazz, the music on this podcast really pushes the boundaries of classification. Episode 82 Psychedelic Japan, Part 2 Playlist Wha Ha Ha, “On the Floor” from Wha Ha Ha (1983 Recommended Records). This group released three records in 1981, all in Japan. Recommended Records, the UK-based record maker, released this compilation of tracks taken from all three of those records. The group Wha Ha Ha ended at that point but its four principle members went on to varied musical careers. Akira Sakata is an alto saxophonist, Kiyohiko Semba is a percussionist, Mishio Ogawa is a vocalist, and Shuichi Chino is a keyboardist and electronic musician. 10:08 Merzbow, “Untitled 1” from Material Action for Two Microphone (sp) (2nd version) (1984 artist cassette). Masami Akita is one of my long-time favorite Japanese electronic/noise practitioners. He would send me cassettes back in the 1980s and I've always tried to keep up with him. Not strictly a Japanese psychedelic artist, I include him here primarily because, like some of the other artists in this podcast, he has widespread influence on other genres of Japanese electronic music. This prolific Japanese noise artist has released over 500 recordings since 1979.Recorded at Merzbau. Tape, Recorder, Synth, Effects, Kiyoshi Mizutani; Tape, Violin, Electronics, Effects, Masami Akita. Early cassette by Akita. 22:30 Yoshiaki Kinno, track 4 from unknown cassette, 1984.Japanese guitar and saxophone improviser. In the 1980's he established a cassette label featuring a wide range of improvised music. 3:32 Boredoms, “Boil Out UFO” from Boretronix 88' (1988 Mega Scum Groove Inc.). I think this is their first cassette release, going back to 1988. Boredoms (ボアダムス), alternatively known as V∞redoms, is a Japanese experimental/noise/space rock/tribal drumming band from Osaka, founded in 1986 by Yamatsuka Eye. Known for their extended jams and heavy drumming, it is remarkable that they had some mainstream success in the 1990s. Bass, Hira; Drums, EDA; Drums, Vocals, Yoshimi P-We; Guitar, Yamamotor; Music by, Boredoms; Words By, Vocals, Tibetan Bell, Effects (EQ-phasing), cassette tape manipulation, electronics, Eye. 2:18 Boredoms, “Untitled” (excerpt) from Boretronix 3 (1990 Ltd.). Another early cassette release from Yamatsuka Eye on his private label. This cassette consists of remixes of unreleased Boredoms material and fully explores the noise and rhythmic aspects of their work. This is an interesting prelude to their latter, more cohesive works. Bass, Hira; Drums, EDA; Drums, Vocals, Yoshimi P-We; Guitar, Yamamotor; Music by, Boredoms; Words By, Vocals, Effects (EQ-phasing), cassette tape manipulation, electronics, Eye. 12:01 Otomo Yoshihide, “We Insist? A) Rinko-Gun; b) x-Day” from We Insist? (1992 Sound Factory). Japanese experimental musician, turntablist and guitarist. We're back from our holidays with a real bang. We may have been away from a few weeks, but our absolute favourites Melt-Banana have been away for the best part of a decade. Their return is everything we hoped for too… apart from a full album! Elsewhere we have our usual mix of eclectic and extravagant experimental music. Starting with the superb cold wave of Grotto Terrazza, moving through to the truly sublime collaboration between Pariah and Blawan as Persher, and then finishing with a stunning 20-minute piano record from Natalie Rose LeBrecht. Other than that, brutal metal, thrashing grind core, modern classical, experimental percussion and loads more. Tracklisting Grotto Terrazza – Der Zaubergeselle (Maple Death Records, Italy / Cut Surface, Austria) Persher – Man With the Magic Soap (Thrill Jockey, USA) Chloe Kim 김예지 – My Dearests (Phantom Limb, UK) Enablers – Phone Blows Up (Wrong Speed Records, UK) Melt-Banana – To Raffle or Not to Raffle (Adult Swim, USA) Concentration – Grün im Gesicht (Avon Terror Corps, UK) Pye Corner Audio – Pocket Disco (Polytechnic Youth, UK) FRET – Rhino Patch (L.I.E.S. Records, USA) aircode – Crawling Away (self-release, UK) Natalie Rose LeBrecht – Star Water Shapeshift (Longform Editions, Australia) Produced and edited by Nick McCorriston. Michael Allan Patton (born January 27, 1968) is an American singer, producer, film composer and voice actor, best known as the lead vocalist of the alternative metal band Faith No More. Noted for his vocal proficiency, diverse singing techniques, wide range of projects, style-transcending influences, eccentric public image and contempt for the music industry, Patton has earned critical praise and influenced many contemporary singers. One of the most versatile, innately talented, and idiosyncratic singers in rock music, Mike Patton is also one of the genre's most valuable players, since he has divided his time between a host of diverse projects including Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, Nevermen, Dead Cross, and an experimental solo career. In addition to his band and solo work, Patton is a gifted actor and producer who has collaborated with a wide array of artists, including John Zorn, Sepultura, Melvins, Melt Banana, and Kool Keith. Lineup: Bad Brains, Don Black, John Barry, Tom Jones, Young Fathers, Quincy Jones, Don Elliott, Terveet Kädet, Dead Cross, Jacques Brel, Tom Dissevelt, White Noise, Charlie Parr, Messer Chups, João Gilberto, Funkadelic, Die Kreuzen, Adriano Celentano, Conlon Nancarrow, Bösendorfer Grand Piano, Dion Mcgregor, Basil Kirchin, Chet Baker, Nino Rota, Sun Ra, The Cosmic Rays
This month we're back travelling through time, but just a short trip this time, back to the seemingly very recent 2013, where we were all still regularly listening to cds (and even cassettes in colin's case as his car back then was impressively primitive), but other than that, pretty much wearing the same clothes as we do now. Listen to us battle eachother to discover our collective favourite songs of the 2013 and alog the way uncover Ian's traumatic Japanese Noise flashbacks, Colin's language blindness, Tracey's utter desperation to obtain more points, and we question exactly how tall Ed Sheeran actually is... We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Arcade Fire, Courtney Barnett, Biffy Clyro, David Bowie, Bring Me The Horizon, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Childish Gambino, Clutch, Daughter, Ghost, John Grant, Grouper, How To Destroy Angels, RM Hubbert, Lanterns On The Lake, Adrianne Lenker, Lorde, Low, Macklemore, Major Lazer, Melt-Banana, Nine Inch Nails, Paramore, The Pastels, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, This Many Boyfriends, Waxahatchee, Kanye West, & Steven Wilson. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place – 16 points 4th place – 14 points 5th place – 12 points 6th place – 9 points 7th place – 7 points 8th place – 5 points 9th place – 3 points 10th place -1 point Hosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey B Guest starring Helen Jackson-Brown. By now, most of us know that ska wasn’t dead in the 2000s. But it was uncool. Really uncool. Bands were fleeing from the scene, and describing their sound as “Rock with horns”—anything other than “ska.” But the scene continued, fueled by the passion of dedicated fans. During this weird time, one group that did quite well was Boston’s Big D and The Kids Table, who even managed to chart on the Billboard Top Heatseekers with their excellent 2007 album Strictly Rude. Big D formed in ’96 but didn’t release their first album, Good Luck, until 1999, which was right when ska was freefalling from mainstream culture. The group persevered during the ska-wasteland era and remains popular to this day. They are releasing their latest record, Do Your Art, on October 22nd on Side One Dummy Records. It’s their first collection of original tunes in years. We brought lead singer David McWane on to the show to talk about the album and their legacy as a not-quite-90s ska band going on two decades now. We covered a lot of ground, including two of their best-known cover tunes: The Specials’ “Little B***h” and Propagandhi’s “Ska Sucks.” We discuss how the group drove across the country to play a show for Mike Park, in hopes that he’d sign them to Asian Man Records. (Which he did!) And we spend a fair amount of time dissecting their Strictly Rude record. We even find out about the group’s unlikely relationship with Japanese noise rock band Melt Banana. Dave also tells us a very compelling story about surviving cancer. Fortunately for him, he caught it early and is doing great. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it on social media! "Warm and melodic" aren't exactly words the members of Publicist UK are used to hearing. Each of them has worked in some heavy, aggressive bands on the metal and hardcore scenes. But together, in this new underground supergroup, they have created urgent and moody music that revels in melody and massive, insistent choruses. And if it's not all warm and fuzzy, it is at least supportive: Publicist UK's debut album is called Forgive Yourself. The band began as a long-distance experiment by underground rock all-stars Dave Witte (Municipal Waste, ex-Burnt by the Sun, Discordance Axis, Melt-Banana), Zachary Lipez (ex-Freshkills), Brett Bamberger (Revocation, ex-East of the Wall), and David Obuchowski (Goes Cube, Distant Correspondent). The group started recording in their homes in Virginia, New York, New Jersey, and Colorado then landed a record deal with Relapse Records, recording the full-length in New Hampshire. Hear the band perform a few of their new songs live in our studio. Setlist "Levitate the Pentagon" "Slow Dancing To This Bitter Earth" "Away"

It's a big one! Listen to us discuss Melt-Banana, The Stooges, Wevie Stonder and Jonathan Fire*Eater. Hang on for the mind-melting reveal about a band name (that we aren't judging) at the end.
Attack and dethrone God! That's the theme of Gary Numan's Exile, as blasphemous a record as you're ever likely to hear. But it could also be a lyric from Melt-Banana's 1994 debut Speak Squeak Creak. Thanks! In November of last year, a series of tweets from the band Adult Mom aired out some grievances with their indie label, Tiny Engines, accusing them of being delinquent on royalty payments and being unwilling to relinquish ownership over the masters of their albums. The label, which had served as home to Beach Slang, Cayetana, and Mannequin Pussy, went dark after that. As of writing this, they haven’t published any news on their website since November 5, and the last time they were active on Twitter was November 7, when they retweeted a performance from one of their promising young acts, Illuminati Hotties.Illuminati Hotties mastermind Sarah Tudzin watched all of this label drama unfold and thought to herself: Oh fuck. She had been working on a record for a year and a half, intended to be released as her second LP of a two-album contract with Tiny Engines, and was understandably skittish about handing it over to a label whose future had a big fat question mark hanging over it. So, she put the record on the shelf and got to work making what she calls “a decoy record.” The result is Free I.H.:This Is Not the One You’ve Been Waiting For, an album she made, start to finish, in three weeks. Tudzin, a studio engineer, threw every trick she knew at the project, taking influence from everything from Black Flag to Cardi B. Free I.H. features a few straightforward and catchy indie pop songs, for which she’d been known, but there are also endless left turns on this weird, eclectic record. When she listened back to the finished product, she realized she’d accidentally made something she really liked. And I like it too. In fact, I love it. Free I.H. speaks to Tudzin’s studio mastery as much as her strength as a musician. There are noise tracks, calypso beats, some frantic Melt Banana-style rippers, and some good ol’ fashioned punk jams. It’s funny, it’s self-deprecating, it takes a few subtle digs at its own contract-fulfilling nature. It is the Album of the Summer™, and it was made completely by accident.Sarah and I recently sat down to chat (~FROM A RESPONSIBLE DISTANCE~) about making the album by mistake, flushing dogs down the toilet, getting spammed by illuminati conspiracy accounts, the mugshot photo on the album’s cover, and how the two of us are BEST FRIENDS.(Ooooh and it appears my newsletter service has finally enabled Bandcamp embeds. It is, as they say, over for you hoes. [The hoes being Spotify.] OK listen to the album below.)All photos are: 1. perfect and 2. by me, do not use without permission thank you. ATTT is continuing its visit to the great state of Wisconsin for a chat with drummist and all-around swell fella DJ Hostettler to break down a topic that is near and dear to our hearts. We have to come clean and tell the world that some of our favorite bands did a terrible job coming up with a name. The bands featured in Top Ten Great Bands With Bad Names are a unique bunch. They thrive in spite of names that are sometimes so bad, they keep people from listening to them. Let's face it, if someone told you that you have to listen to Garbage, does it really sound like a fun time? Anyway, we had a blast reminiscing about the terribly-named bands we've been in over the years and call out some of our favorite bands for dropping the ball in the name department. A 'lil Nick, Dan, and Mike cast here. The guys dig into Melt Banana's killer 2013 album "Fetch." Combining noise rock, American hardcore-punk and an incredible ear for the strata of sound, Melt Banana's "Fetch" might be their most accessible album and one that can still blow your doors completely off. Give it a listen after Daniel gives it a reticent curmudgeon's thumb up.
Cellist Shannon Hayden installed the solar panels that power the recording studio that's housed in the farm that she built with her bare hands (with the help of her dad). Oh, and she also imitates the guitar sounds of noise-punk band Melt Banana with her cello... aaaaand she was once set on fire for being a better cellist than a boy. Yup. On her latest album, You See the World, Shannon channels her love of noise, traditional classical and textured drones into songs full of tension and release. The Japanese do noisey rock music better than most, and this week's show has ample proof with tracks from Melt-Banana and Piqnic. We've got reissued Greek Jaffa psych from Aris San, as well as new tracks from Future Punx, abstract sound artist Thomas Köner, and Salford-based electronics master Howes.
“Formed in 2007. Often compared to Dead Kennedys, Lard, and various Am Rep bands. Now playing thrashy doomy crossover as a three piece consisting of members from Call Me Lightning and Those Poor Bastards. Recent shows include Jello Biafra, Black Flag, Negative Approach, Melt Banana, High On Fire, Goatwhore, Die Kreuzen, etc.” ToneMadison.com writes, “‘Guitarist/vocalist Vincent Presley, who sang in a piercing yip in ZEBRAS‘ first incarnation, has lowered his voice to crusty, baying screams, and his riffs now balance twisty noise-rock figures with a deep rhythmic chug. Synth player Lacey Smith’s Moog has evolved from a spacey noise machine to a sludgier and more nimble bass instrument. But perhaps the most significant change is how much more Hochstetler… has integrated his drumming style into the band’s songs… Throughout The City Of Sun, you can hear Hochstetler’s toms rumbling to evoke a more conversational, swinging interpretation of precision death-metal pummeling,” furthering, “On ‘The Turning Of The Bones,’ ZEBRAS hit a lot more fiercely than I could have imagined them doing just a couple of years ago. Smith and Presley create a wall of low-end pestilence and Hochsteler’s snare scrambles up it, but the heaviness is also kinetic and dynamic. Smith’s synth bass part and Hochstetler’s drums work together to stir up crafty drag-and-sprint rhythms, and Presley’s vocals lurch against them with snarling spite.'”
