During his second tour in Vietnam, Major General Patrick Henry Bradyserved as a helicopter pilot in the 57th Medical Detachment, tasked with evacuating wounded no matter what the conditions. The 57th's call sign, “Dustoff” became one of the most famous call signs in the war. On January 6th, 1968, Brady was awakened to rescue two wounded Vietnamese soldiers stranded in the densely fogged mountains. This cloud cover was a double edged sword, providing cover from enemy fire, but making it almost impossible for pilots to navigate. At this time, Brady was the only Huey pilot who could fly in it. By turning his aircraft sideways and hovering slowly along the valley trail, he blew away the fog with the backwash of his rotor blades. This cleared a path, and allowed Brady to reach the stranded men. Brady then received word that 70 wounded Americans were in need of rescue nearby. Continuing to navigate the fog using his unique technique, Brady reached their position and made a total of four trips back and forth to the hospital. Brady was supposed to be joined by other pilots, but he was the only one who could penetrate the fog, so he had to do it all on his own. During his third trip, Brady's Huey was hit by enemy fire. The controls took serious damage, and he later found out they were hanging on by a thread. After this damage assessment, Brady and his crew hopped in a replacement aircraft and continued on with the mission. Brady later received word of an American platoon stranded in a minefield. Another Huey had already attempted to pull them out, but it set off a mine after touching down, forcing it to retreat. With incredible precision, Brady touched down right where the previous aircraft did in order to avoid any mines. His crew then navigated the minefield, dragging the wounded back to the aircraft one by one. On one of their trips they hit an explosive, injuring two crew members and sending shrapnel into the aircraft. Despite their injuries the crew was able to load the rest of the wounded. Brady flew the damaged ship back to the hospital, and swapped into another Huey. On October 9th, 1969, Major General Patrick Henry Brady was awarded the Medal of Honor. Major Brady evacuated a total of 51 seriously wounded men that day, and without his quick response & skillful navigation, many of them wouldn't have made it. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to episode 89 of The Hangar Z Podcast Brought to you by Vertical Valor Magazine. Our guest, Erik Sabiston, developed a lifelong fascination with aviation as a young man. A former US Army Blackhawk pilot, author of the best-selling book "Dustoff 7-3 Saving Lives Under Fire in Afghanistan", the founder of RTAG, co-founder of the ICARUS device, current airline pilot, and owner of Sabiston Consulting. Erik takes us on his unique journey, from his early days in the music industry to living off the grid, then to the military as a pilot, and ultimately to becoming a legacy airline pilot.Erik's dedication to the aviation industry extends beyond the cockpit. His experiences transitioning from military to civilian life inspired him to create RTAG, a charity focused on veteran hiring within the aviation industry. We explore the ups and downs of this transition period, and how Erik's organization strives to support veterans in their journey. We also dive into discussing the process of becoming an airline pilot and the benefits of transition programs for military personnel. Erik talks about his exit from RTAG and what he is doing now with his consulting business where he is still helping veterans and civilians achieve their dream of a career in aviation. The episode concludes with Erik sharing his personal encounters from his military service, including an unforgettable military medevac incident. We reflect on the significance of rigorous training and the role it plays in life-threatening scenarios. This episode is part one of a two-part series. Stand by to hear part two.I would like to thank our sponsors Metro Aviation SHOTOVER and CNC Technologies as well as our supporters on Patreon.

Del Livingston is the former Vice President of Flight Operations for Airbus Helicopters, and a veteran of the Vietnam war. In this, we'll speak with Del about his background flying Dustoff operations in Vietnam, including a harrowing rescue mission, the result of which sent him home from combat a month early. Then, Dell will tell us about his transition into the civil world, and the difference in stakes between civil and military flight when it comes to aviation safety.
This episode is a continuation of our conversation with the crew from Rainier Dustoff who recently helped rescue an injured hiker. On the previous episode we talked about the rescue mission itself but on this episode we go into the aviation career field in general - how they got started, what they love about it and where they see their careers going. Send story ideas to: jason.r.kriess.civ@army.mil
Just catching up with an old friend. Talking about how the tournament year wrapped up and future endeavors.
On today's show I sit down and chat with a few members of the Dustoff team over at the Army aviation facility. In October, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Ryan Kennedy and his crew piloted their UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter out near Leavenworth, Washington to help rescue an injured hiker and transport them to safety. This is something that they train for a lot but don't necessarily get to do it as a real-world mission. They talk us through the rescue step-by-step, each of them sharing what their roles were during the mission. When recording this episode we got a little carried away and we ended up talking for an hour and a half. So this will be broken up into two episodes. This one will be about the rescue mission and the next one will be about the aviation career field in general and their love for their service in the guard.
Arnold is a highly decorated Army huey pilot. His book, “More Than Met The Eye” is a story of how Vietnam has impacted his life. During the war, Bell UH-1 Iroquois or “Hueys” were used for three purposes: As transports or “slicks”, for medical evacuation, or as gunships. The military medical mission was named “Dustoff”. These are the airships that Arnold flew. #BumpInTheRoad #Veteran #VietnamVet

Seain, Keegan, and Joe were the last three DUSTOFF medics in Afghanistan during the 2021 U.S. withdrawal. In this episode, they describe their experiences in the days and weeks leading up to the attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport's Abbey Gate.ProPublica is a non-profit news site that published a comprehensive account of the Abbey Gate attack earlier this year; you can read it here. The U.S. Central Command conducted an investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the attack; that report is available on the U.S. Naval Institute's website.
Phil Marshall is the author of 18 and counting books about the history and heroism of Dustoff huey pilots in the Vietnam War. He is also a Dustoff pilot himself who was wounded during a daring nighttime mission sent to rescue three seriously wounded Americans. Dustoff was the callsign for the green Huey helicopters with the Red Cross often painted on the nose or the side of the aircraft to signify its role as a medical emergency platform. They'd fly day and night, unarmed without door guns and without night vision, into hot landing zones to rescue wounded soldiers, civilians, children, and even animals. Sometimes they were shot down or crashed. If the pilots and aircrew survived death and weren't rescued, they were either executed on the spot or taken to a prisoner of war camp to endure brutal interrogation techniques and torture. Despite this possibility, Dustoff teams always answered the call. Phil is planning to open the world's first Huey Museum in Indiana, United States. Buy Phil's books on Amazon

On this episode I have Ken Blaisdell and this is his story. My name is Kenneth Blaisdell; I joined the Army when I was 20. I went to basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. From Basic Training, I went to Fort Rucker, Alabama for 9 weeks to learn my job as an Aviation Operation Specialist. I couldn’t have been happier; I got my dream duty station Fort Wainwright Alaska. Things couldn’t go any better; I was able to go to the one state I always wanted to explore. Shortly after getting to C Co. 1-52nd Aviation Regiment, Flying Dragons, Dustoff, I was told I would be deploying to Afghanistan in 2014 for 9 months. I ran 9-line missions while deployed, which means when someone got hurt, I would launch the crews to save the wounded, but also got to go on the missions to help the medics. I got taken out of the fight two times due to severe stomach problems from eating the local food. It’s now to the point if I eat the wrong food at the wrong time, I will become physically ill for as many as two to three weeks and end up in the hospital. I was in the United States Army until 2016, but shortly after I got back from Afghanistan was when I suffered life-altering injuries from a car accident and a sledding accident. Everything slowly unfold, I went to a walker then a wheelchair. I had broken bones in my feet, my feet were curled and bent inwards; I couldn’t walk, and my legs started to bow outwards. I could feel my bones when they broke over and over again. I waited six months at Fort Wainwright until they started the med board process. My dream of serving 20 years was crushed. 100 Seconds by Punch Deck | https://soundcloud.com/punch-deck Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_US

Colonel Ben Knisely grew up in the small town of Osprey, Florida, just a few miles south of here. He graduated from Riverview High School. He entered military service following his graduation from the University of South Florida, in Tampa and 28 years later, retired from the US Army at the rank of Colonel. A couple notable aspects of his career that I would like to share with you in this introduction is that during a tour of duty in Viet Nam, the then, First Lieutenant Ben Knisely, while piloting a UH-1 MEDEVAC helicopter was shot down by an enemy missile in the Ah Shaw Valley over enemy territory and severely wounded in the crash. He and his co-pilot were listed as MIA in April 1968 and were subsequently rescued by a very highly publicized heroic and daring mission executed by the Army’s famous 101st Airborne Division. The details of the harrowing escape and evasion actions by Lt. Knisely and his copilot, and the subsequent and successful rescue efforts by a small special Operations team was captured in a book by Peter Dorland, called DUSTOFF 65, published in 1974. The Infantry Lieutenant, who led the famous and heroic rescue effort directly into the face of the enemy, was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor. After 9 months of hospitalization, Knisely not only petitioned to stay on active duty, but re-qualified to fly MEDEVAC helicopters, and did so for the remaining years of his Army career…..In his last tour of duty; he served on the special staff of General H. Norman Schwarzkopf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Ben hides his physical scars of combat well. Clothing covers the skin disfigurement of his burns, and you will Hardly notice the limp of his prosthetic left ankle and foot, but he admits that he suffers from PTSD, for the haunting dreams of his combat shoot-down event almost 50 years ago still come back now and then, and for that invisible wound, he will be the first to tell you that there is no cure.
