What We Discuss In This Episode: Unique Challenges for Menopausal Women: Esther explains that while there are physiological changes that occur during menopause, the bigger challenge is often the mindset and beliefs that women have been conditioned to accept about this stage of life. She emphasizes that weight gain and other symptoms are not inevitable, and that lifestyle choices can make a big difference in managing these changes. The key is being willing to try different approaches and listen to your body. Navigating Alcohol and Carbs: Esther discusses the relationship between alcohol and weight/health goals, noting that while it doesn't have to be eliminated completely, it's important to be mindful of how much and when you consume it. With carbs, she recommends prioritizing them around workouts and focusing on nutrient-dense carb sources rather than processed, high-calorie options. Overlooked Aspects of Health: Esther highlights the importance of prioritizing sleep and mental/emotional well-being, as these factors have a big impact on energy, mood, and overall health. She encourages listeners to take a few minutes to reflect on one small change they could make in their routine to start improving in these areas. The "Big Rock" habits that can help us feel our best and reach our health goals, regardless of menopause. Confidence is an essential part of loving yourself. It's a feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of their own abilities and qualities. Yet, there's often an aspect that gets in the way of true, sustainable confidence and that's how we view and think of our physical form. When we are not happy with our bodies, our confidence tends to tank. I sat down with Esther Avant, sports nutritionist, personal trainer, health and weight loss coach, and owner of EA Coaching. Together, we move through building confidence, the important steps we all must take to properly care for our bodies and minds, and we even dive into how women over 40 can best change their mindset as they age. So, let's dive right in! Key Takeaways: 00:00 Introduction 02:20 Esther's background and her stance on health, mindset, and confidence 04:30 Letting go of the idea of All-or-Nothing 08:50 You must repair your self-reputation 12:19 Putting intent behind the action gives you the outcome 15:10 Creating the emotional connection behind your “why” 17:15 Consistency creates long-term change and motivation 21:33 “What's more than nothing?” Giving yourself credit… 23:06 Decoupling exercise and nutrition 33:49 The rude awakening of white knuckling your way into weight and confidence 39:50 Celebrating yourself and wins is the way to build confidence 43:30 It's not your verse the world! Our guest today, Esther Avant, shares a statistic that 80% of our inner thoughts are negative. She believes, this is one reason it is soo difficult to take what she calls, compassionate ownership, of our health and lives. Esther is a sports nutritionist, personal trainer, health and weight loss coach and Owner of EA Coaching. She provides holistic health and lifestyle coaching and specializes in helping women, generally over 40, reach their health and weight loss goals. She supports them by helping them learn and master the exercise and nutrition "Big Rocks," and taking complex and overwhelming topics (like menopause!) and simplifying them so that the individual feels ready, willing, and able to take meaningful action. But, our conversation with Esther focuses on so much more than just the obvious aspects of exercise and nutrition and, instead, focuses on the less well understood components of mindset work and lifestyle change.. We take a deep dive into the root cause of our own personal roadblocks to change (in general) and our continuous habit as women to show up for EVERYONE else, BUT ourselves. Esther teaches us that we have to start to rebuild trust with ourselves by consistently making and then fulfilling the small...then larger commitments we make to ourselves. In doing so...we prove to ourselves that we can show up, withstand things that are difficult, push ourselves out of our comfort zone and thrive. We CAN DO HARD THINGS ladies. We HAVE to do hard things to live the life we aspire to. Esther believes if more women prioritized their health, they'd be able to use those same principles to unleash the confidence and focus they all need to leave their mark on the world EA Coaching has helped hundreds of women realize that they're not too old, it's not too late, and they don't need to accept, "maybe this is just middle age." In this episode, Esther teaches us: Making lifestyle changes that stick requires showing ourselves the same compassion and empathy we would show to another person whom we love an care about. Getting to a place where you love your body is a process that takes time. While we're navigating these shifts, take time to control and curate what you're exposed to on social media because what you consume has an impact on your progress and self-talk. The noise is not improving your life. Be intentional about who you surround yourself with and curate your own "advisory board". Taking compassionate ownership of your life and health is easier when the women you surround yourself with are practicing the same habits. We don't realize the number of complex issues at play that prevent us from changing our habits and shifting our lifestyle. These can range from the "food centric" nature of social society to more deeply rooted internal narratives where we tell ourselves we are a priority or that it isn't worth the risk of failing...again. When we continue to make commitments to ourselves and then NOT follow through, we begin to lose trust in ourselves. Taking compassionate ownership of our lives and healths means we have to rebuild trust in ourselves, slowly but surely, and start showing up for ourselves the way we show up for everyone else. You can find more about Esther at: Website | www.estheravant.com Facebook | eawellnesscoaching Instagram | @esther.avant Please join our FB Group and follow us on Instagram. Please leave us a review and let us know what is ONE thing YOU will do this week to show up for yourself and start to rebuild your own personal trust. We love you and want you to know that you are not alone. Let's do midlife together and support one another as we strive to live our best lives. xoxo Trinity and Shelby

My guest this week on the podcast is Esther Avant. Esther is an online weight loss coach, personal trainer and sports nutritionist who has been working with women since 2006. Esther started EA Coaching online in 2015 after meeting her now – husband who's in the Navy and knowing she didn't want to table her career to follow him around the country (world, now). Throughout her 17+ years of education, professional experience, and personal trial-and-error, Esther has come to realize that the true equation for lasting success in weight loss is consistency, commitment, and confidence. This was an easy conversation with someone who knows how difficult it can be to lose weight and keep it off. Esther's programs will help you meet your goals for better nutrition, mindset, and weight loss. She is the real deal. You can find Esther and her EA coaching programs at www.estheravant.com. You can also find Esther on Instagram @esther.avant. Errin came to EA Coaching after years of trying to lose weight on her own, "doing everything backwards," as she said. She was exhausted from restricting her food, doing tons of cardio, and the yo yo of seeing the scale drop, only to climb right back up. She considered just giving up and accepting that she could never be successful at losing weight but then decided to ask for help, instead. As a leader at work, she realized she was always preaching to her team the importance of leaning on & learning from others - and it could apply here, too. Now Errin is a successful graduate of our Gone For Good program & is here to share her lessons to inspire you to ask for the help you need, in this - or any - area of your life. You'd be a great fit for this if you're a current or aspiring coach seeking to gain skill as practitioners and/or establish your practice. You can signal interest here The deadline to submit the first round of applications is April 3. We encourage people to start the process earlier because cohort coaches will asked to join and also initiate the program on a rolling basis. This will mean increasingly limited availability of cohort spots. Program Overview Spirit of the Pilot Philosophy of Approach Intended Outcomes More about the Training Infrastructure Program Pricing Meet the Current Cohort Anticipated Questions Apply Program overview This pilot program is a multi-component training infrastructure for developing your own practice as a skilled coach. You could think of it as a proto-accelerator or proto-incubator for solo practitioners, which also includes access to business architecture that is essential for building and maintaining a stand-alone practice. The infrastructure targets key developmental bottlenecks of coaches, including early client acquisition, real-world practice, training and oversight by multiple senior coaches, co-created learning plans, reputational benefits, business architecture, and more. The program is a key piece of a higher-level mission to boost the total number of skilled practitioners supporting people doing scalable good, including those in EA. Tee Barnett Coaching Training (TBCT) will include: A tailored curriculum co-created with cohort coaches Systematic and consistent client referrals for engaging in real-world skill building 1-to-1 coaching training calls with Tee Regular cohort calls with other cohort coaches Free access to office hours with Tee Peer coaching training calls Turnkey technical systems for building and expanding your practice (partnering with Anti-Entropy) Other guidance and resources becoming a coach, setting up and/or enhancing your practice Potentially also offering observation hours and guest senior coach interactive workshops – Duration – the first cohort is expected to last about 6 months, though timelines may vary depending on the intended growth plans agreed upon with each individual cohort coach. – Pricing – costs of the program are currently reduced for the first cohort, pegged at roughly the equivalent of two personal coaching sessions per month with Tee. – Location – remote, though the option may open up for TBCT to sponsor travel and accommodations for periods of in-person coaching training. Apply Here Spirit of the pilot Concepts conveying the vibe of the program: early-stage pilot, co-creationary, integration & synthesis, complementarity, self-aligned One-line summary: this is an early-stage coaching development program that provides infrastructural support for those in the process of establishing and enriching their coaching practice. The working design of the training infrastructure is partly a function of the early-stage nature of the program, but also a portfolio of deliberate philosophical and methodological stances that encourage coaches to collaboratively sculpt their own learning process. For example, each cohort coach's ‘curriculum' will be the end result of a collaborative selection process between Tee and the coach themselves, with both parties iterating upon chosen materials and methods that will culminate into a highly personalized experience within the program. Cohort coaches can expect much that comes with the territory of participating in a pilot program. On the one hand, participating in the ‘founding cohort' can be thrilling a...

As an entrepreneur in the health coaching space, I've noticed so many parallels between what makes a successful business owner and what helps someone reach their health goals, namely: consistency, commitment, and confidence. By honing these 3 skills, you can reach whatever goals you set for yourself. I'd like to expand on this topic and help entrepreneurs prioritize their health while they build their businesses, rather than putting it on the back burner. ▼ ▼ Esther is a certified sports nutritionist, personal trainer, and weight loss coach. Our favorite registered dietitian, Lauren, is here with us again. In addition to being a part of the EA Coaching team, she is also a single mom to her son and works full-time in a clinical setting. Body composition can seem pretty confusing when you're starting out on your weight loss journey. There are a lot of different metrics out there, but when it comes down to it, the goals and priorities that mean the most are based on regular, everyday things like wanting to feel comfortable in our clothes or being able to go shopping and not end up in tears in the dressing room. We want to make it to the end of the day, playing with our kids and not yelling at them because we're tired and achy and sore and irritable. We want to have the energy to get through our workday. We want to enjoy our lives. If your goal, like most of us, is to look and feel good and move without pain and have energy, then that's not really riding on a specific number. It's also why we talk so much about non-scale victories. Maybe you've experienced a period of time where you aren't seeing results on the scale, but you know that your clothes fit better. This is what body re-composition is all about. It means changing the ratio of lean mass to fat mass in your body. In this episode, Lauren and I discuss the approach to weight loss that emphasizes the importance of not only losing fat, but also gaining muscle. We also touch on how changes in your body composition look differently at different stages of your weight loss journey, non-scale methods of tracking your progress and common myths and misconceptions about body composition. Connect with Lauren on Instagram You'll Learn: What body composition is (and what it means for your weight loss) 4 ways to change your body composition How to know whether a plateau in your weight is a result of building muscle and losing fat or if you're just not making progress What to prioritize when you want to build lean muscle Previous Episodes with Lauren: Episode 74: All About Elimination Diets With RD Lauren Moss Episode 82: Making Time For Your Health As A Single Mom With Coaches Emilia & Lauren Subscribe, rate, and review this podcast and get a copy of our Weekend Survival Guide as a thank you! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Impact Report for Effective Altruism Coaching, published by lynettebye on the AI Alignment Forum. This report summarizes the impact evaluation for EA Coaching's first year and a half from its founding in October 2017 until May 2019. It's supplemented by a longer document that includes the appendixes and footnotes. Executive Summary What Does EA Coaching Do? EA Coaching helps people working on the most pressing problems get more done. As of May 2019, I have had 800+ sessions with 100+ clients. I work with professionals who already accomplish a lot -- consultants, professors, software engineers, managers, researchers -- to pinpoint their bottlenecks and help them solve the biggest problems holding them back from accomplishing more. Together, we clarify their goals, implement more effective strategies, and increase focused work time on their top priorities. Coaching typically consists of four to twelve 50-minute calls. Key Takeaways Most of my work is with clients who are likely to contribute to top cause areas, since marginal improvements in productivity for this group may have a disproportionately large impact on the world. Half of my current clients are at FHI, Open Phil, CEA, MIRI, DeepMind, the Forethought Foundation, and ACE. I expect productivity coaching to have an impact by improving prioritization and increasing focused work. Clients report an average of 16 extra productive hours a month, and it's not uncommon for them to claim the coaching doubled their output via prioritization changes. Clients think coaching is useful, as evidenced by client surveys, impact case studies, and revealed preferences. These metrics support the conclusion that the coaching is valuable as implemented, and not just in theory. However, it seems likely these metrics imprecisely correlate with objective output, the ultimate goal, due to biases in self-report and uncertainty about counterfactual impact. I built a rough model quantifying the impact for a cost-benefit comparison, which suggests that the benefit from coaching is about twice the opportunity cost. My calculations indicate clients reported 20% more benefit on average per session in the first half of 2019 compared to 2018 (see Appendix B), and I think there's still significant room for improvement. Why Lynette? I've been involved in Effective Altruism since 2014; I interned at GiveWell, started the Careers Chair role for Harvard College Effective Altruism, and started an EA Fellowship with Penn Effective Altruism. After graduating from Harvard University with a degree in psychology, I researched self-control under Angela Duckworth at the University of Pennsylvania. I'm also trained in Person-Centered Therapy (non-directional, non-judgmental active listening) with the peer counseling group Room 13, and I'm a mentor for the Center for Applied Rationality (CFAR). I wanted to do more direct work after leaving the Duckworth Lab, and 80,000 Hours suggested I try coaching to help EAs level up. So I used my knowledge of psychology and counseling to start EA Coaching. Confidentiality Unfortunately, many details can't be shared publicly due to confidentiality. If you're considering donating, I can share more details if you email lynettebye at gmail.com. Who Do I Work With? I work with people I think can contribute toward important cause areas, primarily those identified on 80,000 Hours' global problems page. Most of my expected impact comes from working with this group, since marginal improvements in their productivity may have a disproportionately large impact on the world. Half of my current clients (a third of all clients I've worked with) are at FHI, Open Phil, CEA, MIRI, DeepMind, the Forethought Foundation, and ACE. Approximately half of my current clients are working on X-risk areas, primarily artificial intelligence safety and ...
