Clive Doyle - A Journey to Waco: Autobiography of a Branch Davidian Nearly twenty years after they happened, the ATF and FBI assaults on the Branch Davidian residence near Waco, Texas remain the most deadly law enforcement action on American soil. The raid by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents on February 28, 1993, which resulted in the deaths of four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians, precipitated a 51-day siege conducted by the FBI. The FBI tank and gas assault on the residence at Mount Carmel Center on April 19 culminated in a fire that killed 53 adults and 23 children, with only nine survivors. In A Journey to Waco, survivor Clive Doyle not only takes readers inside the tragic fire and its aftermath, but he also tells the larger story of how and why he joined the Branch Davidians, how the Branch Davidian community developed, and the status of survivors. While the media and official reports painted one picture of the Branch Davidians and the two assaults, A Journey to Waco shares a much more personal account of the ATF raid, the siege, and the final assault that details events unreported by the media. A Journey to Waco presents what the Branch Davidians believed and introduces readers to the community's members, including David Koresh. A Journey to Waco is a personal account of one man's journey with the Branch Davidians, through the tragic fire, and beyond.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

We were trying to figure out what to do to celebrate Halloween on the podcast and fortuitously Dark Horse marketing reached out and asked if we had anything planned. I cooked up the idea to have an episode featuring horror movie recommendations from some of the best comics writers in the business chatting about the movies that have inspired and scared them the most, plus to promote their new books of course. Both Kyle Starks (Peacemaker Tries Hard, Sex Castle, Where Monsters Lie) and John Harris Dunning (Wiper, Summer Shadows, Ripperland) have been on the show previously but we brought in a sacrificial... I mean newbie, award winning horror writer and filmmaker David Ian McKendry (Barstow, Found, All The Creatures Were Stirring) into the fray. I don't think I've ever had this much fun hosting an episode which was honestly more like herding cats, but it was an absolute blast and a privilege to get a glimpse into how the genre has influenced them and their work. Make sure to check out their projects: Kyle's Those Not Afraid A new crime series from three-time Eisner nominee Kyle Starks for fans of true crime and murder fiction. Two serial killers discover they are within reach of the state record for kills and enter a terrible competition to see who gets there first. Featuring amazing and stylish noir art from Patrick Piazzalunga (Monsters Are My Business) and incredible covers from the legendary Glenn Fabry (Preacher, Hellblazer). John Harris Dunning's Ripperland The year is 2188 and Jack the Ripper has returned to London. For the last century, a shattered post-Brexit England has operated as a massive Victorian theme park in exchange for American military and financial protection. But when an American mogul's grandson is killed in the heart of London, the delicate status quo is threatened. Is the killer a brilliant maniac? Americans taking advantage of their superior technology? Or the English Underground Resistance, wishing to throw off the yoke of American oppression and re-join the modern world? American Special Agent Jesse Holden and local British Police Detective Edwin Fogg must overcome their clashing ideologies in order to find the truth in the foggy streets of 22nd Century London. David Ian McKendry's Barstow At the center of the Mojave Desert, at the crossroads between hell and gone, lies Barstow. Agent Miranda Diaz is in this godforsaken land on the trail of a missing agent. He's a man she's never met, and yet her name was the only clue he left behind. Something dark . . . something demonic . . . lurks beneath this oddball town, but can Miranda unravel the mystery before all hell breaks loose? • Award-winning horror writing and filmmaking team David Ian McKendry and Rebekah McKendry team-up with Eisner-nominated artist Tyler Jenkins for this all-new comedy-horror series! NEW PATREON CryptidCreatorCornerpod Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. The Head of UN Women's Country Office in Afghanistan, Alison Davidian, today (13 Aug) told reporters in New York that “three years ago, a woman in Afghanistan could technically decide to run for president. Now, she may not even be able to decide when to go and buy groceries.”Briefing remotely from Kabul to discuss UN Women's Afghanistan Gender Country Profile 2024, Davidian said, “today, no woman in Afghanistan has a leadership position anywhere that has influence politically, either at national or provincial level. When women are engaged in the Taliban's structures, their roles are largely to monitor compliance of other women with their discriminatory decrees. And this political erasure is really mirrored at a social level.”The UN Women official said, “the Taliban's restrictions on women and girls will affect generations to come.”She said the Gender Country Profile “shows that by 2026, the impact of leading 1.1 million girls out of school and 100,000 women out of university correlates to an increase in early childbearing by 45 percent and an increase in maternal mortality by up to 50 percent.”Davidian said, “the world is watching what happens to Afghan women and girls. And in some cases, it watches to condemn, but in others, in others it watches to emulate. Emulate the Taliban systematic oppression. We cannot leave Afghan women to fight alone. If we do, we have no moral ground to fight for women's rights anywhere else. Their fate determines the fate of women everywhere.”The Afghanistan Gender Country Profile 2024, produced with the financial support of the European Union (EU), provides a snapshot of the current situation regarding gender equality in Afghanistan, noting the previous legal and institutional frameworks (from the period 1978–2021), and examining the current decrees, policies, and practices shaping the gender equality landscape under Taliban rule.https://www.unwomen.org/en/digital-li...Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/policy-and-rights--3339563/support.

I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design with a conversation with Daniel Ian Smith of Village West Design. Here is a quote from Daniel, “I believe everyone deserves to be surrounded by beauty, it is integral to what makes us human.” Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. Monogram - It's the details that define Monogram ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Without steam, it's just a bathroom. Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! - Where service meets excellence TimberTech - Real wood beauty without the upkeep That which is integral to making us human. Think about that for a moment. That which makes us human. The part that enriches us, makes life worth living. Meaning, purpose, form and function. I started this podcast because I love design. I love art, architecture, music and the that which enhances the experience of living. I will never forget the pandemic. I still think about it, a great deal. It was the medical community that repaired our minds and bodies, but it was the design community that repaired our souls. Mine anyway. I don't just love design, I have worked with designers. For my wife's birthday in 2018 or 19, I hired Nancy Russert, whom you have heard on this show. I wanted her to create a meditation space in the front yard of our Manhattan Beach home. She crushed it. As much as my wife enjoyed that space, it saved me during the pandemic. That space became a muti-hyphenate space, outdoors when the indoors became too confining. Daniel is a master architect with a distinct set of skills. Skills that better the lives of those he serves. And we talk about that and a number of other issues relating to the humanity of great design. Daniel and I cover topics rarely discussed like generational nuance as it relates to the way clients feel about and approach design. We're exploring new ground here and this was really fun. I hope you enjoy it. Thank you, Daniel. Loved our time together. Architecture and Italian. Love that. Thank you to my partner sponsors, ThermaSol, Pacific Sales, Monogram and Design Hardware, for not just supporting Convo By Design but for supporting the design and architecture community. Thank you, yes you…for taking the time to listen, download, subscribe and engage with Convo By Design. If you have a design friend that doesn't know about the show, send them a link to this episode. They might enjoy it as well. If you want to connect, please do, convobydesign@outlook.com and on Instagram, @convoxdesign with and “x”. I will have something interesting for you next week, so make sure you are subscribing to the podcast which you can find everywhere you find your podcasts. Thank again. Until next week, be well and take today first. -CXD
What do we say when others label us one way or another? Why do folks have a tendency to do that in the first place? Why is it important to engage when someone mischaracterizes our views? And, if we don't fall neatly into one category, what might be a more accurate way to describe how we do identify politically? In this edition, host Corey Nathan goes through these questions including whether it's accurate to say he's part of THE LEFT and whether there would be anything wrong with such a political leaning. We go through recent right-wing podcasts and other media to better understand what many of our friends and neighbors are listening to and reading about THE LEFT including what Tucker Carlson's been up to and a couple of the recent episodes of Victor Davis Hanson's and Steven Crowder's shows. We look at defining principles of the MAGA movement and whether there are any principles so much as anti-partisanship. There's a response about those who've hijacked the ideas of conservatism as a philosophy and Christianity as an identity. We define what it means to be delusional and examine an illustration of it. And finally we look at what in the world a "French Davidian" is! In all seriousness, we discuss writers, thinkers and leaders who see people with different positions not as enemies but as human beings that we can learn from and even befriend to arrive at a higher truth; people who can thrive in environments where their own views aren't the dominant ones; those who leave room for the possibility of changing - who know that evolving one's positions isn't a sign of weakness but of having the strength that comes with humility; and people who can hold space for the complexity of our world. “…It blew my mind so much when I learned this I got vertigo and had to lay down because it fundamentally changed my world…” In this second part of my conversation with archaeologist David Ian Howe, we take a much more personal tack. David talks about struggles with ADHD and learning he has aphantasia, and how both have shaped his world. I also talk a bit more about how Lucky came into my life, and how having to wing my PhD defense taught me so much about who I am, and how I engage with the world. Both David and I share our thoughts on the importance of embracing your superpowers, David also gives his two cents on the future of dogs, and advocates for the importance of teaching archaeology as a skill for developing empathy and curiosity. “Dogs are wolves that are evolved to life among homo sapiens…” In this first episode of a two-part conversation, archaeologist David Ian Howe and I talk about how that 10lb Chihuahua who steals my covers is actually a little wolf who has ingeniously won the game of evolution. David's lifelong love of dogs and passionate curiosity for archaeology have led him to explore the amazing story of how dogs and humans have co-evolved, and how it is impossible to talk about the human story without talking about the story of dogs. We cover a wide range of topics, including the mythological aspect of dogs, dogs and trauma, and how dogs are encouraging us to step up and become the highest versions of ourselves. In this episode, Roy and Phil have a discussion with David Ian Howe! David is an archaeologist, artist, comedian, content creator, and educator who is particularly passionate about ethnocynology – the study of the relationship between humans and dogs. We discuss everything from the process of the domestication of dogs, to the value of interspecies interactions, to some of David's influences as a creator and educator (shout out Steve Irwin, Dave Chappelle, etc.). This episode is a bit of a deviation from our usual herp-focused content, but remains relevant to our typical subject matter and admittedly has plenty of herp discussion as well. Have a listen! "They do not see themselves as martyrs. They see themselves as agents of God's wrath on Earth."In the days leading up to April 19, 1993, high-ranking figures grew increasingly concerned that the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas had no intention of surrendering anytime soon. FBI officials speculated that David Koresh's writing of a manuscript centered around the seven seals was just another delaying tactic, meant to buy him and his supporters additional time. While many cautioned the FBI to continue holding out - to let Koresh see through the writing of this manuscript - others were hesitant to let him have that time. Soon, the government would move forward with a plan to end the Branch Davidian holdout once and for all...Part 7/7Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerMusic CreditsSpearfisher - "Memory and Forgetting"Henrik Meierkord - "Falten"Nathan Shubert - "Unspoken"Calismo - "Somber"All other music composed by Micheal Whelan

Bonus Series! This is Episode One of the companion podcast series for Tiller's new Netflix series, Waco: American Apocalypse. Waco: American Apocalypse is a deep dive into the Netflix documentary series, exploring topics and interviews that didn't make the final cut. In Episode One, director Tiller Russell and reporter Lee Hancock paint a complex portrait of cult leader David Koresh – the controversial figure at the center of the story – and discuss how he convinced over 100 people (and perhaps himself) that he was a living prophet. Featuring excerpts from interviews with FBI Agent Bob Ricks, Hostage Rescue Team Sniper Chris Whitcomb, Branch Davidian Kathy Schroeder, and Heather Jones, the last child to make it out of the compound alive.
"If any adult in the area around the cabin is observed with a weapon after the surrender announcement had been made, deadly force could and should be used to neutralize the individual."The 1992 Ruby Ridge siege is a seminal event in American history, having become a symbol of government overreach and serving as a precursor to the Waco tragedy in 1993. It also served as a rallying cry for anti-government groups and militias throughout the 1990s, and led to an increase in violent rhetoric that lingers to this day.For that reason, we're going to take a slight detour in our ongoing coverage of the Branch Davidian saga to briefly touch upon this story, and learn about how it ultimately had an effect on the events unfolding down in Waco, Texas...Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanAll music composed by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or Producer
"In his younger years, he had a hard time. He was always looking for something. He had his rock-and-roll; he had his women. But it was never enough."Vernon Wayne Howell struggled to find a sense of stability early in life. Born to a single teenage mother in Texas in 1959, Vernon was abandoned to his maternal grandmother before his second birthday. His mother would take custody of him again later in his childhood, but it was alleged that her husband - Vernon's stepfather - was abusive toward him.Entering adulthood as a high school dropout, Vernon had a lot of issues that had yet to be addressed. After suffering a series of rejections in his personal life, he ended up turning toward the one constant in his life, faith. During his search there, he ended up coming across a group of like-minded individuals in central Texas, who viewed the Bible similarly to himself. Through them, Vernon would find the things that had been eluding him for years...Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanAll music composed by Micheal Whelan, except for "Instrumental Jam" by David Koresh, taken from a live recording in WacoLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or Producer
"Our prayers for such an undertaking on behalf of God's people will be answered by whatever the results to this call might be."More than a century before David Koresh or the Branch Davidians became household names, the religious movements that led to their existence began growing out of the American Northeast. First came William Miller and the Millerites, a collapsed movement that ended up inspiring the Seventh-Day Adventists years later. In the early 20th century, an Adventist named Victor Houteff wrote a book titled The Shepherd's Rod, which he hoped would help reform the church. After being disfellowshipped for creating a "disloyal" and "divisive movement," Houteff ended up building his own church, the Davidians, nearby Waco, Texas...Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerMusic Credits:Noisyfilter - "Repose"Acedis - "Illustrations"Mystery Mammal - "O Come O Come Emmanuel"Rest You Sleeping Giant - "Dead Waters"Graham Bole - "Gloci"Blue Dot Sessions - "Svela Tal"Percival Pembroke - "Music For Haunted Orbital Research Stations"

October 18th 0100 The weed. Remember I'm on weed when i write this so therefore it's all fake. Nothing is real. 5 lovely cheese cameras. Just for me look at the camera and say "now I will jerk off for you" I think I'm honestly just playing with her dude. Lol this sounds so douchey already Like that's true I fuckin flew to Philly and heavily implied I flew there for her, and spent like half my time there with her, but was clear like yea I'm not moving back here, I have too many problems, I'm tired I have no energy I'm actively suicidal, moving back to Philly would be the worst possible thing. Moving to Oklahoma would be equally bad. So like I left feeling really resolute and uh, like clean from the situation. That I no longer felt like I had anything lingering in Philly to hold me back. I could feel completely disconnected from friends and family and like I could finally move on with my life mentally and emotionally. And then either kill myself or start a completely new life. And it's not her fault that I found her so appealing in so many ways. She really is perfect and I don't even understand exactly why. At first I thought she seemed overly attached/neurotic, like moving to be friends and commiting to a friendship so early, but honestly if she feels the same way I do about her, i think I get it. I get the sort of crazy, panicky uncertainty that feels strangely natural and almost predetermined. She triggers me in a schizophrenic way lol. I'm just showing it in a completely opposite way. Super afraid of it. Don't know how to approach it at all and I'm too afraid of failing again. Of feeling accountable and responsible for someone's life, their feelings, emotions, their thoughts, their actions. I'm afraid I'm just gonna keep retreating from every relationship because the suicidality will never leave me. I'll feel guilty about wanting to kill myself when I have someone so close to me, and drag them down ultimately. I think that's why she says she gets it when she's letting me have incredible amounts of space. That she knows I'm in dark place and it wouldn't be helpful for either of us to keep talking. Already feeling myself snap or get agitated with her. There's some part of me that wants to send this note to her directly and just be done with it but I can barely recognize how awful that would be. I'm convinced I'm an extremely narcissistic sociopath and that's all I'll ever be. There is some part of me that is extremely worried I'll slip into a more permanent psychosis someday. Whenever the really big depressive episode hits. I should be getting there soon. I am holding onto virtually nothing. What is there really. Lux. I burdened myself with a pet that I love. And that allegedly will live another 10 years or so. But I know she'll survive either way. it's just one last artificial hurdle to mentally overcome. Having ....stuff is a hurdle. Stuff that I'd rather sell/throw out/give away so I'm not leaving things to clean up. I guess just the car and furniture at least. Big Tings. So everything is neat and tidy and liquidate whatever measly amount into one bank account, cancel and delete all my accounts on everything else, credit cards, bills, socials, porn. It should all be gone. Minimize the amount of physical burden for whoever is responsible for tying up whatever ends I leave loose. The burden of my belongings and presence, things you never knew or understood about me made available to you for the first time, now exclusively shaded with the context of my death, for as long as you let it haunt you. I'd rather there was practically none. Most people just have pictures. Mundane messages exchanged. Maybe a lil trinket or some other sentimental article. Socks. But no social presence for people to periodically check in on. The memorialized Facebook that mom inherits and checks regularly for the rest of her life. Responding to every single comment or wall post your friends and family leave. About the one memory about the quirky thing you used to do in school or about how you dated for 2 weeks but yall felt like siblings or that you were cool and nice and smart and funny or or or that they miss you extra today. Fly high. Maybe that only happens when you die younger. People continue to think of you and leave fb comments for the version of you when you died, or at least from when they last saw you. Their idea of you at that moment. But everyone keeps aging around you, but they never adjust their idea of you to what you would be later in life. They imagine the 18 year old forever, just as he was. And so they write to him as if he's just an 18 year old, or a 8 year old, or a 28 year old. But I think we should just talk to them as if their spirit ages as well. It's like you're being condescending to the dead, a little patronizing. I can't tell if there's a bit in here somewhere. I smoked weed to relax and I wrote this instead. And now I think it's a good idea to read on the podcast. I should read this at an open mic. Just like 3 minutes of however far i can get into the note. Disclaimer: this is not a suicide note. (Read this part aloud) (VERY LOUD) i SMOKED WEED and started THINKING AGAIN and now I'm INTROSPECTIVE again and think it's IMPORTANT to DOCUMENT .... APPARENTLY....... AND now I'm SCHIZOPHRENIC and now IM NEVER WAKING UP

The True Crime Reporter® Podcast features stories and interviews from the respective careers of investigative reporter Robert Riggs and former U.S. prosecutor Bill Johnston. Listeners have asked how both of them got involved in investigating criminal cases. In response, the podcast featured an episode with Riggs on July 4, 2022, explaining how he first got involved in digging for information during the Watergate scandal case while working for Congressman Wright Patman. In this episode, we cover the highlights of Bill Johnston's distinguished law career. Bill devoted his career as a federal prosecutor to, in effect, protect the sheep from the wolves. He helped launch the manhunt for notorious serial killer Kenneth Allen McDuff, who tortured and murdered countless young women. His role in bringing McDuff to justice and prosecuting the Texas Parole Board Chairman official who released McDuff under a cloud of corruption is featured in the Fox Nation documentary Freed To Kill. Johnston became the cohost of the True Crime Reporter® podcast with Peabody Award-winning investigative reporter Robert Riggs in 2021. Johnston had a guilty verdict returned in every federal prosecution in hundreds of jury trials that he undertook during his 14-year career with the U.S. Department of Justice. A noteworthy criminal case includes the Branch Davidian cult members who murdered four ATF agents during a raid on their heavily armed compound outside Waco. The Texas Rangers, rather than FBI agents, were Johnston's go-to investigators for complex murder cases. He managed a team of Rangers to investigate the crime scene at the Davidian compound after the end of the controversial inferno. Johnston successfully prosecuted a mail bomber, which was the first case tried under the U.S. Violence Against Women Act. Other firsts include the first jury trial in the United States in which mitochondrial DNA (hair without root) was used in evidence against a violent “car-jacking” defendant who caused the death of an elderly man in Texas. He received a mandatory life sentence without parole. The basis of the celebrated Paramount Network miniseries starring Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch--Waco is the critically-acclaimed, first person account of the siege by Branch Davidian survivor, David Thibodeau. Twenty-five years ago, the FBI staged a deadly raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. Texas. David Thibodeau survived to tell the story. When he first met the man who called himself David Koresh, David Thibodeau was a drummer in a local a rock band. Though he had never been religious in the slightest, Thibodeau gradually became a follower and moved to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. He remained there until April 19, 1993, when the compound was stormed and burned to the ground after a 51-day standoff with government authorities. In this compelling account--now with an updated epilogue that revisits remaining survivors--Thibodeau explores why so many people came to believe that Koresh was divinely inspired. We meet the men, women, and children of Mt. Carmel. We get inside the day-to-day life of the community. We also understand Thibodeau's brutally honest assessment of the United States government's actions. The result is a memoir that reads like a thriller, with each page taking us closer to the eventual inferno. 2 years ago #david, #kores, #opperman, #report, #story, #survivor's, #thibodeau, #waco
Clive Doyle : Journey to Waco: Autobiography of a Branch Davidian Nearly twenty years after they happened, the ATF and FBI assaults on the Branch Davidian residence near Waco, Texas remain the most deadly law enforcement action on American soil. 5 years ago #autobiography, #branch, #clive, #david, #davidian, #doyle, #ed, #journey, #koresh, #popperman, #report, #waco:

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the impact of David I of Scotland (c1084-1153) on his kingdom and on neighbouring lands. The youngest son of Malcolm III, he was raised in exile in the Anglo-Norman court and became Earl of Huntingdon and Prince of Cumbria before claiming the throne in 1124. He introduced elements of what he had learned in England and, in the next decades, his kingdom saw new burghs, new monasteries, new ways of governing and the arrival of some very influential families, earning him the reputation of The Perfect King. With Richard Oram Professor of Medieval and Environmental History at the University of Stirling Alice Taylor Professor of Medieval History at King's College London And Alex Woolf Senior Lecturer in History at the University of St Andrews Producer: Simon Tillotson

In this episode of the Rewild Podcast I talk with David Ian Howe about dogs and rewilding. David is a professional archaeologist trying to popularize the science of anthropology, most often through comedic videos. He is known for his interest and expertise in understanding ethnocynology–the study of the ancient relationship between humans and dogs. As rewilding is in part, a critique of domestication, the relationship between humans and dogs is an interesting area of exploration: at what point does mutualistic symbiosis become parasitic, or vice versa and is the human and dog relationship reflective of that? Listen in as David and I discuss this ancient relationship, among a few other topics. In the first half-hour of this week's program, Mickey's talks to author and professor Valena Beety and veteran investigative journalist Geoff Davidian about the widespread problem of wrongful criminal convictions and the obstacles that both legal investigators and journalists encounter when they try to uncover information. Then in the second half of the program, Eleanor Goldfield speaks with long-time single-payer advocate Dr. Margaret Flowers about prospects for universal health care in the U.S. today. Notes: Valena Beety teaches law at Arizona State University, and previously worked at Innocence Projects in two states (Mississippi and West Virginia). Geoff Davidian is a reporter with over 40 years' experience, including at the Milwaukee Journal, Arizona Republic, and Houston Chronicle. Margaret Flowers is a retired pediatrician and a long-time advocate for universal single-payer health coverage. She's a member of the steering committee for HealthOverProfit.org, a group that campaigns for "a national improved Medicare for All healthcare system."
