As wind power's contribution to the global energy transition grows, insiders are looking to improve sustainable practices within the wind industry itself. In the latest edition of the Wind Power podcast, Lisa Ekstrand, head of sustainability at Vestas, joins Carbon Rivers' chief technical officer David Morgan to discuss how both companies are boosting circular economics in the wind industry by developing new ways to recycle turbine blades. Between 85-90% of a typical wind turbine is already made of recyclable materials like steel. However the turbine blades themselves are often made from composite materials including epoxy resin that is much harder to break down and cannot be recycled so easily. Numerous prominent companies in the wind industry are now exploring blade recycling in the hopes of growing it to a commercial scale and solving one of the biggest sustainability challenges the industry still faces. Vestas last year announced it had developed a bespoke, chemical-based process named Cetec (Circular Economy for Thermosets Epoxy Composites) which it claims can effectively break down the epoxy resin “superglue” which holds blade composites together and thereby reclaim the blade materials for recycling. Carbon Rivers meanwhile worked with the US Department of Energy to develop its own way to break down the composite materials within wind turbine blades using a process similar to pyrolysis. Ekstrand and Morgan discussed why recycling turbine blades is so important for sustainability in the wind industry, and why employing the reclaimed materials anywhere they can be useful is the most important outcome when it comes to circular economics.
In episode 16 of Recsperts, we hear from Michael D. Ekstrand, Associate Professor at Boise State University, about fairness in recommender systems. We discuss why fairness matters and provide an overview of the multidimensional fairness-aware RecSys landscape. Furthermore, we talk about tradeoffs, methods and receive practical advice on how to get started with tackling unfairness. In our discussion, Michael outlines the difference and similarity between fairness and bias. We discuss several stages at which biases can enter the system as well as how bias can indeed support mitigating unfairness. We also cover the perspectives of different stakeholders with respect to fairness. We also learn that measuring fairness depends on the specific fairness concern one is interested in and that solving fairness universally is highly unlikely.Towards the end of the episode, we take a look at further challenges as well as how and where the upcoming RecSys 2023 provides a forum for those interested in fairness-aware recommender systems.Enjoy this enriching episode of RECSPERTS - Recommender Systems Experts. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.04.24.536726v1?rss=1 Authors: Andrushko, J. W., Rinat, S., Kirby, E. D., Dahlby, J., Ekstrand, C., Boyd, L. A. Abstract: Past work has shown that there are both structural and functional differences in the brains of females versus males (Ritchie et al., 2018). Specifically, males have larger cortical and sub-cortical volume and surface area (both total and subregional), while females have greater cortical thickness in most brain regions. Given these differences it is possible that males may show larger volumes of brain activation and greater variability in patterns of brain activity. Yet to date little work has systematically considered whether patterns of brain activity indexed with functional MRI differ between females and males. The current study sought to remediate this issue by employing brain somatotopic motor mapping from a previously published (Ma et al., 2022) and openly available dataset to test differences in patterns of functional brain activity associated with 12 voluntary movement patterns in females versus males. We discovered that females exhibited smaller volumes of brain activation across all 12 movement tasks, and lower patterns of variability between female participants in 10 of the 12 movements. We also observed that in these data females had greater cortical thickness which is in alignment with previous structural sex difference analyses (Ritchie et al., 2018; Wierenga et al., 2022). Overall, these findings provide a basis for considering sex differences in future fMRI research and provide a foundation of understanding for which various neurological pathologies may present different between females and males. Emily's story is relatable for anyone one their fitness journey. The desire for quick fixes and fast results. The frustration of hearing conflicting advice. The comparison of seeing other people losing weight but the same program isn't working for you. Once Emily joined our program at Lead The Way Fitness, she got two things that are hard to find when you're on your journey alone - community and accountability. Her Coach almost immediately remembered her name (which shocked her) and used it every time he saw her. And he expected her to be at the gym again tomorrow which is an expectation she didn't want to let down. Secondly, she found a community of like-minded people. A group of folks who are working on the same problem (health and fat-loss) while supporting each other along the way. And they swap ideas on where to find comfortable shoes and sports bras.
Actress Madison Ekstrand joins Andy to talk about taking online acting classes, recording (and re-recording) your own auditions, and the horror convention vibe. Intro music is "String Anticipation" by Cory Gray.
Mick welcomes Madison Ekstrand to the show to discuss her new show Very Frightening Tales. A new horror anthology series coming soon.Check out more from Scene Snob Interviews on TheSceneSnobs.com.

23 international experts in groin pain were sent two specific cases – one on inguinal region pain, the other – you guessed it – adductor region pain. The heavyweights in groin pain including Holmich, Muschaweck, Ekstrand, Meyers, Tyler, Silvers, Schilders, Thoborg, Brukner, Paajanen, Philippon, Weir, Griffen, Orchard +++. Physiotherapists, sports physicians, surgeons – unique for the diversity of opinions sought. The experts were asked to (i) write down their diagnosis and (ii) suggest initial treatment. How many diagnoses were presented? (Really? 22!! You are kidding, surely). These folks were also invited to work on focused systematic reviews and share their thoughts in person in Doha, Qatar. So far so good. But there's always a catch! They were then locked in a room with just #LCHF not to come out until there was useful product for clinicians.
