Did you know birds navigate more habitats than almost any other species and are key indicators of planetary and human health? Join us on the Land Food Life podcast with Michael McGraw, an ecology and wildlife biologist, as he shares his journey from herpetology and ornithology to regenerative agriculture. Michael discusses conducting wildlife surveys and how grazing practices affect bird populations, biodiversity, and the nutrient density of our food. This episode is packed with inspiring stories and practical insights. Michael talks about his passion for birdwatching, which was sparked during Timber Rattlesnake observation in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and the use of tools like the Merlin app for bird identification. He explores bird song identification, its insights into ecosystems, and its therapeutic effects on human well-being.Michael also discusses the documentary Roots So Deep by Peter Byck, in which he appears, highlighting adaptive multi-paddock grazing and its ecological benefits. We examine how mindful grazing impacts ranchers, soil health, and bird diversity. We conclude with an emphasis on increasing BIPOC agricultural land ownership to create a diverse, just, and equitable food system.Resources:https://princetonhydro.com/staff/michael-mcgraw/https://rootssodeep.org/

Episode 23: Recorded August 17, 2021 "Gamal started to gallop, and King said, 'I know this -- I can run!'"Cynthia Branigan, on her first Greyhound's experience with Gamal, America's last diving horse Show Notes Cynthia Branigan took her first Greyhound, King (fka Low Key Two), to visit a very special horse, Gamal. Gamal was the last of the Atlantic City Steel Pier diving horses. When he was "retired" and put up for auction in 1980, Cynthia purchased him. She rescued King from an unhappy adoption situation in 1987. At the time, he was ten years old and quite depressed. However, he and Gamal realized they were kindred spirts and took to running like old friends. Cynthia, like many Greyhound people, is also a horse person. Actually, she's an animal person, having joined forces years ago with Cleveland Amory, the father of the modern animal protection movement and founder of The Fund for Animals. During her time with Cleveland, she ventured to the New Jersey Pine Barrens on a mission to save Gamal from slaughter by purchasing him at auction, an act that set the tone for her life to come. After adopting King in 1987, she was approached by a local shelter to help find a home for another Greyhound. She decided to set out on her own and started to find homes for Greyhounds in the New England area. In 1988, she founded the Greyhound adoption group Make Peace with Animals and has, to this day, rehomed over 5,500 Greyhounds. Her passion is more action than activism -- finding the right homes for animals like Gamal and King. She has also channeled her passion into writing, publishing two books on Greyhounds. One of those books, Adopting the Racing Greyhound, is in its third edition. Cynthia's latest book -- The Last Diving Horse in America -- retells the story of her quest to rescue Gamal from slaughter against the backdrop of her life in animal welfare. The Last Diving Horse in America will be published October 19, 2021. In this episode, Cynthia shares her passion for animal welfare and Greyhound adoption with host John Parker. Her stories include the rescue of Gamal, the founding of Making Peace with Animals, and what inspired her to write about Greyhounds and her very special equine friend. In 1735 on a dark and turbulent night in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Jane Leeds was struggling to cope with her twelve children. Upon finding that was indeed pregnant with a thirteenth, she cried out in frustration, proclaiming that the unborn child would be the devil itself. When it was born the child appeared to have hooves, thick wings and the head of a goat. It growled and moaned, pushed itself free of the midwife, and flew away, up the chimney and away into the pines. Still seen to this day, the unholy child would be known forevermore as the Jersey Devil. Such stories are surely only folk tales, myths, legends, with little more to them. But the Jersey Devil is not the only thing haunting the dark corners of the garden state. The third state to be ratified in 1787, it has a long history which is mired in horror and bloodshed, murder and mystery. From the Spy House in Bayshore, where legendary pirate Captain Morgan tortured people in the basement to the Devils Tree in Bernards Township, a supposed gateway to the otherworld which curses any who try to fell it, there are no shortage of terrifying locations. In these twisting times that we all now live, many of us are confined to our homes. But no virus shall halt the intrepid. Leading the charge, determined to continue the investigation into what walks those dark hallways, those lonely graveyards and ancient inns, Richard Moschella has a project in his hands. His New Jersey Paranormal Project, comprising a perfectly-selected group of extremely talented and dedicated investigators, have made it their mission to unearth what lies beneath. Richard recently compiled some of the most gripping, most compelling, downright weirdest tales from their project into a book, and he joins us tonight to talk about some of them, and to share with us what pulls him from his home, time and again, to Peer Beyond The Veil. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/peerbeyondtheveil/support

Hello everyone, and welcome to Episode Five!  In this episode I talk with Peter Mooney, a birder, world traveler, and herper from the era when it was called "snake hunting".  A New Jersey native, Mr. Mooney served his country in Vietnam, and afterwards he spent time in teaching school in Jasper County, South Carolina.  Along the way he knew many of the old-school east coast herpers. I've spent time with Pete in Peru and in Cuba (he's on the far left in the photo, taken in Havana) and I've gotten to know him a bit. I heard some great stories from Pete about snake hunting in the old days, in both the New Jersey Pine Barrens and in the Okeetee area of South Carolina, and I knew I wanted to get him on the show. I'm know many of you out there are are familiar with the works of Carl Kauffeld and Richard Bartlett, but since they are all out-of-print works that can be hard to find, I will list them here for those who haven't read them yet - these books carry the essence of the old-time snake-hunting days. Join us on the border of the forest of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, where the New Jersey Devil is in fact said to live, as Lobsterbird faces parasitic hunters in order to return home with the healing elixir she discovered along her hero's journey. Leave us a Rating & Review!   Your Creative Sparks: COLLABORATE with FEAR. Think of it as a fun art project. We are going through a real DEATH PERIOD right now, in which we will be REBIRTHED. We are being asked to RAMP IT UP in our ability to deal with LETTING GO, SURRENDER AND FAITH. POLARITY is like a FALSE MATRIX of thinking. Your Travelogue It was about a year ago that I had a dark night of the soul that lasted like an entire year. Like it's just finished. There are many times throughout the course of the past year where I actually thought it was over, and then it just kept going. [1:49] This is the magic spot, and when I was little, it was in this spot that I knew that I was crossing over the threshold into another realm, much like the bridge to Terabithia. [5:42] Ticks. People are super scared of them because apparently they're hunters. [7:56] I came home to birth some kind of energy baby. [9:19] “I'm walking through the spiderwebs, leave a message and I'll call you back.” The way to collaborate with fear and make it an artistic project is to allow it to be there and make really creative choices with it. [15:55] We are in this time right now where people are really being asked to step up and express their truth.  [25:31] I am going to expose my own darkness and that's what this past year has been about. [30:04] A thirty second walking meditation for crossing out of the weird donut hole. [41:49] When the Buddhists were talking about duality and seeing through the illusion, I thought I knew what that meant. But the multiverse had to create this amazing obstacle course to really teach me what the Buddhists meant by duality. [43:45] We are here, on the path in the woods to liberation. [46:54] Because of our conscious awareness, we have an equal role in helping to sustain the planet, much as the planet does. What do you have to say to that, magic forest? [52:43] There's a different way to do this y'all, and that's what we have to get to. And we'll only get there if we are investigating really deeply what our own energies are that are running under the surface. And then we must learn how to clear it and how to transmute it and how to turn it into something which then does give us power. [57:03] I am convinced that we need new leaders to emerge in this world right now. [59:57] It is possible to be in a state of beingness. And it actually doesn't matter if you're walking through a magical forest of your childhood or you're walking around on the streets in New York City amongst all the chaos. Join Cian by the fire to discuss paranormal and unexplained topics in this spooky episode of Wide Atlantic Weird. Oh, and have a fine ale at hand too! THE FIRST UFO: In 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold saw nine, shiny, disc-shaped somethings flying in formation over Mount Ranier in Washington State, and the world was never the same again. Over 70 years later, people are still arguing about what he did (or didn’t see). Whatever the truth, this encounter proved to be the beginning of the modern UFO movement. Everything that has followed – flying saucers, alien greys, abductions, the X-Files – has its roots in the Arnold sighting. So what really happened? Who was Kenneth Arnold, anyway? And should we take his report seriously? Why do people say that newpapers really invented flying saucers? This report finds Cian being less sceptical than usual as he dives into this seminal case. AMERICAN EUGENICS: Cian shares an anecdote about his time working in the US, at a site that had once been fundamental in the history of the American eugenics project. Creepy graveyards, Hell’s Tunnel, the body hold: Cian seems to wind up living in places that are a magnet for urban legends and unsettling history, and this time he discovered that the remnants of some of America’s darkest doings are still to be found today. THE PINE BARRENS EXPEDITION: A fictional piece. When a dedicated eugenics scientist takes his crusade to the New Jersey Pine Barrens in the 1930s, he hopes to meet some the most degenerate people the US has to offer. There’s nowhere better for him to begin his plan to rid the country of undesirables. But what he finds in those swampy depths goes to show that what’s desirable can mean different things to different folks. Daily Grail: Re-Evaluating The Kenneth Arnold UFO Sighting The Coming Of The Saucers, Kenneth Arnold & Ray Palmer

There were literal tears when we recorded this one, friends. This week Ally and Steph are talking about the episodes 'How to Win Friends & Influence Monsters' & 'Death's Door' of season seven of Supernatural. In episode 9, Sam, Dean, and Bobby are hunting something new in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and we find out Leviathans are coming to humanity through Turducken sandwiches. At the end of this episode Dick Roman is the worst and shoots Bobby in the head. In 'Death's Door' a reaper is chasing Bobby Singer through his comatose brain. Chuck remembers first reading stories about bigfoot while he was in second grade, at a school on the Jersey shore, just east of the infamous New Jersey Pine Barrens, home of the infamous Jersey Devil. Then shortly thereafter seeing the Patterson/Gimlin film on “In Search Of” with Leonard Nimoy. Since then he has had a real fascination with cryptozoology. Today, Chuck lives in Reno, Nevada. Two years ago, after watching one of the first MonsterQuest “Sasquatch” episodes with his then, 8 years old son, he started researching sightings on the internet. It was then that he realized that there have been numerous sightings, not far from where he lives, in the Lake Tahoe area and surrounding Sierra Nevadas. With this new found revelation, he became obsessed with anything and everything “bigfoot.” Already having a blog for his work in currency trading, and after reading a few other bigfoot related blogs, Chuck decided to start blogging on bigfoot, with a focus on the eastern Sierra Nevadas. This hobby he started, as an activity to do with his son, has since turned into a passion. Chuck has begun his own field research, and is now scouting areas along the California/Nevada border. Chuck's an avid sport fisherman, and scuba diver, so he's not far out of his element being in the outdoors. He enjoys talking bigfoot with anyone who's interested, and encourages everyone to get off the couch, and get out there to enjoy, and humbly respect the squatch's domain. To view Chuck's blog, you can find it at: sierratahoebigfoot.blogspot.com. Join us at Nite Callers Radio as we bring you another American Bigfoot researcher.
