In this episode my guest is wonderful Corey L. Robertson whom I have met at Florida Institute of Technology ABA Program, where he was my co-instructor. From his website (make sure you visit it www.behaviorguy.com) "I worked as an Exceptional Student Education teacher with Orange County Public Schools for four years, teaching elementary and middle school students with varying exceptionalities including emotional difficulties, specific learning disabilities, and mild retardation. In 2002, I began working for Intervention Services, Inc. providing behavior analysis services to typically developed children exhibiting problem behaviors. This consisted of working with parents and teachers to develop and implement effective behavior plans in the settings in which these behaviors occurred. In 2003, I was certified as a Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst (BCABA). In 2004, I went to work for another agency, Interventions Unlimited, Inc., for the opportunity to work with children and young adults with autism and other developmental delays. A year later, an opportunity to work with one of my FIT professors and mentor led me to Quest, Inc, a company that provides various services to adults and children with disabilities. I worked for Quest from 2005-2009, providing supervision for three BCaBAs, and overseeing behavior plans and skill acquisition programs for four group homes, a vocational center, and clients receiving supported living services in the community. Currently, I am a lead co-instructor for Florida Tech's professional development program in ABA, and also provide supervision privately for those pursuing certification. In 2007, I became certified as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). I am currently a member of the Association for Behavior Analysis International, The Association for Professional Behavior Analysts, and serve on the executive committee for the Florida Association for Behavior Analysis." FORT WALTON BEACH — Formal charges of child abuse and child neglect have been brought against three Silver Sands employees who were arrested in January, according to a press release from the State Attorney for the First Judicial Court. The new charges, which are third degree felonies, replace a more serious charge of aggravated child abuse that was levied in January. They are in the same classification as the charges Kenwood ESE teacher Marlynn Stillions faced. She was convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison. The employees, Margaret Wolthers, an Exceptional Student Education teacher, and two aides, Diana Lacroix and Carolyn Madison, are accused of "unlawfully and willfully" abusing three young children between Sept. 1, 2018 and Nov. 18, 2018. The children are autistic, according to their original arrest reports.
Children with autistic characteristics need all the same things as children who do not have any autistic behaviors - love, respect, emotions, attachment and understanding of their wants and needs. We can all open our hearts to the differentness in our world and support one another through the fear and anxiety of parenting. As Dr. Darling says, "the child you get is the kind of parent you become". This podcast is about hope, courage and love. At the table with Dr. Sharon Darling from the Department of Exceptional Student Education at Florida Atlantic University.
