The Improving Care and Access to Nurses Bipartisan Legislation (also known as the ICAN Act or HR8812) was introduced in Congress on September 13, 2022, by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.) and Rep. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio). This bill seeks to remove barriers to practice under the Medicare and Medicaid programs by increasing access to health care services provided by advanced practice registered nurses.     In this episode, Dr. Cassandra Vonnes, a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, and member of the GAPNA Communication Team, talks with Dr. Carolyn Clevenger, DNP, GNP-BC. Dr. Clevenger is a nationally recognized leader in gerontological nursing and education, and a Past-President of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association.Dr. Clevenger discusses her inspiration to become a gerontological nurse, her accomplishments during her service as GAPNA President, her work on the GAPNA Leadership Institute, her leadership style and experience, and her greatest mentors and influences throughout her career.Dr. Carolyn Clevenger, DNP, GNP-BC, is a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical and Community Partnerships at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She is responsible for the Office of Clinical Placement and the Emory Nursing Experience, including the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Education Center. She is the Clinical Director and a Practicing Nurse Practitioner at the Emory Integrated Memory Care Clinic. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Veterans' Affairs.     In this episode, Dr. Cassandra Vonnes, a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, and member of the GAPNA Communication Team, talks with Dr. George Peraza-Smith, DNP, APRN-C, GNP-BC, GS-C, CNE, FAANP, President of the Gerontology Nursing Certification Commission. Dr. Peraza-Smith discusses his dedication of being a nurse treating patients across the lifespan, from pediatrics to gerontology; the role of APRNs in the care of older adults; the importance of continuing education and obtaining nursing certification in the specialty of gerontology; and the mission and vision of the Gerontology Nursing Certification Commission. Dr. George Byron Peraza-Smith, DNP, APRN-C, GNP-BC, GS-C, CNE, FAANP, has been a certified gerontological nurse practitioner for over 20 years. He teaches gerontology nursing to undergraduate and graduate programs and maintains a practice in long-term care and primary care. Dr. Peraza-Smith is graduate department chair and professor at South University in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Peraza-Smith has been an active GAPNA member serving as the Treasurer and Chairperson for the Geropsychiatric Special Interest Group. He was a co-author with the Consensus Statements on Proficiencies for the APRN Gerontological Specialist and currently serves as President of the Gerontology Nursing Certification Commission.     In this episode, Dr. Cassandra Vonnes, a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, and member of the GAPNA Communication Team, talks with nurse leader and the 2020-2021 GAPNA President Dr. Sherry Greenberg.Dr. Greenberg discusses her inspiration for becoming a nurse and her decision to specialize in gerontological nursing; her leadership roles within GAPNA; GAPNA's 40th anniversary mission to preserve the past, enhance the present, and secure the future; and how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted care for older adults and health care in general.Dr. Sherry Greenberg, PhD, RN, GNP-BC, FGSA, FAANP, FAAN, currently works as an associate professor at Seton Hall University, College of Nursing in Nutley, NJ, and a courtesy appointed associate professor at New York University, Rory Meyers College of Nursing. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the Gerontological Society of America, and the New York Academy of Medicine. She is also a Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing through the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence. She is a member of the Gerontology and Geriatrics Education editorial board and a peer reviewer for multiple journals. For the past 15 years, Dr. Greenberg has served as editor of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing's Try This Series, which highlights evidence-based best practices and approaches for the care of older adults.Dr. Greenberg has been an active member of GAPNA for many years and was the 2020-2021 GAPNA President. She started her service to the association as a member of the Education Committee and has served in a broad number of roles, including Director-at-Large from 2017-2019. In addition to her leadership role with GAPNA, Dr. Greenberg has devoted much of her career to gerontological nursing and interprofessional education and practice.
