Do you know what your family's unique purpose or identity is? Can you and your kids name your family's core values?  If you feel like a deer in headlights when asked those questions, you aren't alone. Families are at the heart of God's plan for the world, serving as unique units designed to fulfill His divine purposes. Yet churches often zoom in on assessing individual callings and miss the bigger picture of the family's role. As a result, most parents never discover their family's unique God given design or purpose. They never consider what their family's core values might be. In this episode of Christian Parent/Crazy World, host Catherine Segars chats with Derek England, the Executive Director of Family ID. Together, they unpack God's timeless design for the family and why understanding your family's unique purpose is vitally important. Episode Highlights: Family Identity and Purpose: Catherine and Derek dive into how each family has a distinct place in God's plan. They talk about the importance of establishing core family values that guide everything from daily decisions to long-term goals. From Past to Present: The conversation touches on traditional family roles, modern challenges, and key insights from Nancy Pearcey's book, The Toxic War on Masculinity. Creating Core Values: Derek shares his own family's journey in developing core values, values like being radically protective of quality time and maintaining unwavering integrity. Living Intentionally: Emphasizing the need to be intentional, Derek offers practical advice on defining and living out your family's unique identity and values. Free Resources for Families: Take advantage of Family ID's free tools and resources, including a family assessment and masterclass, available at family-id.com. These resources are packed with activities, short videos, and worksheets to help you uncover your family's special purpose and core values. When the family is strong, each individual member is strong. Family ID helps parents embark on a journey of intentional family living, equipping them with invaluable tools and wisdom to foster a stronger, more unified family dynamic that glorifies God. Explore the divine importance of family in God's plan and begin your intentional family journey at www.family-id.com. Guest bio: Derek England is the Executive director of Family ID, an organization that is dedicated to transforming families by helping them discover and embrace their family identity, purpose, and direction. What's your life vision?   "Jesus said to him, 'If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!'" John 21:22 NASB   I had a friend mention that question the other day. What is your personal vision. I know ministries that have visions, businesses that do. Even a ministry called Family ID challenges families to develop a vision. But what is your personal vision?   When I was a kid, I bought into the American Dream. I wanted to have enough money to have choices. The more money I had, the more choices I had. A vision means I have to decide. I have to chase some things at the exclusion of others. To decide means to cut away. When we decide, it's like homicide; we kill all the other options.   I wanted to keep my options open, but I kept making poor choices that didn't result in me being happy or satisfied. Eventually, I turned to Jesus and trust him. And my vision became a bit more clear. Some options were off the table. But until I started thinking about my personal vision, I still wasn't clear enough.   Our second guiding principle in Follower of One is Individual Initiative and Leadership. We believe our relationship with Jesus is very personal. No two are identical. In the story behind our passage, the resurrected Jesus has appeared to some of the disciples on a lakeside. He challenges Peter to follow him, but not John. Peter asks why John isn't following and Jesus gives this answer. Basically, we don't need to worry about others. We don't need to compare. We need to simply focus on Jesus and trust him.   How your faith shows up in the world is between you and Jesus. It should line up with scripture. You should be able to find other Godly people who will help you discern what God wants, but in the end, it's like salvation. It can't be done for you. You have to make the choices and take the actions yourself.   We value individual initiative at Follower of One. It's our 2nd Guiding Principle. Stay tuned over the next few days to hear the other 4. You can also read about these by searching for "values" at www.FollowerOfOne.org. Why not let your relationship with Jesus transform the way you live. Check out our community and join us.

Today, on the Follower of One podcast, Mike Henry sits down with Greg Gunn. Greg Gunn established and began growing the vision of Family ID in 1997. Since that time, Family ID has grown under the leadership and vision of Greg for over two decades. After starting out in the living room of his home, along with wife Rhonda, Family ID has established a global presence and is leading thousands of families to discover their unique identity. Family ID guides families in establishing their core values, mission statement, vision statement and living with intentional direction. In this episode, Mike and Greg talk about Family ID, the importance of having a Mission Statement for your family, navigating your family though life, how the internet has changed discipleship, the resources of Family ID, and having the right order in your life.  Outline of the Episode 00:30 – About Family ID  03:11 – About Greg Gunn 07:34 – Having a “Mission Statement” for your family 16:39 – How the internet has changed the approach of discipleship 20:13 – The importance of navigating your family through life 23:44 – Being intentional and coming up with God's rules for your family 26:16 – The resources that Family ID provides 33:30 – Having the right order of life - God, Family, and then others Having a “Mission Statement” When you go onto a churches website, or onto a website of a Christ-centered organization, you will typically find a mission statement. This outlines how the company is striving to follow God's plan and heart. So, why don't we have mission statements for our families? We can outline what our goals are for the Family, while keeping them centered in Christ.  Being intentional and coming up with God's rules for your family We need to be intentional with our relationship with God. As we navigate life with our family, God's plan needs to be our plan. When we follow His plan for us, He will provide for us. It doesn't mean that it will be easy but following the Lord in everything is the best way for us to live.  Follow Greg Gunn Facebook Instagram  Connect With Follower Of One Join us over in our Online Community, get social with us; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn and subscribe to our YouTube channel. On Friday, October 30th, Governor Kate Brown released updated health metrics and guidance for the return of students to in-person learning. We are still reviewing this new information and evaluating what it will mean for our district; however, we wanted to provide you with an update on what we do know at this time. First, to clear up any confusion about Q2: all students will begin quarter 2 in Comprehensive Distance Learning, or CDL. There are a very small number of students who will begin accessing limited in-person instruction opportunities in Q2 to support a language or learning need, and staff have already communicated with those families. Starting November 9th at the high school level, we are allowing a modified reopening of the outdoor spaces on our campuses for limited activities by athletic and activity groups. This reopening will meet all required and recommended criteria that have been set forth by ODE, OHA, the Centers for Disease Control, and Governor Brown’s orders. In addition, HSD will take all precautions and safety measures and endeavor to go above and beyond to ensure our students’ wellbeing. Students who would like to participate are encouraged to sign up on their school’s Family ID site to indicate their interest, so that coaches and advisors can connect with them to share additional information. Please note that our campuses will remain closed to the public until further notice. Our goal, of course, is to get students back into our buildings for in-person learning as soon as it is safe to do so. We anticipate there being a more attainable path to that return in these new metrics and guidelines, especially for our youngest learners and students who are at-risk under the current model. An inside look at a powerful system for success that our family has been following now for about 15 years.  It has helped us expand our vision and achieve dreams that are bigger than we ever thought we could.   It’s a system for success that I’m pretty sure you won’t hear much about in many other places. But this has been a critical process for us individually and as a family. Like many good things in my life, I learned about this process from a mentor who had focused on success in this specific area of life more than I had. I will be forever grateful to my family coach and good friend, Greg Gunn for opening my eyes to this life changing system for success.   In this episode all eight of us gathered around the table for a fun discussion right after we finished our 15th Annual Gienger Family Goal Setting Retreat.  What is that?  Here’s how it works. We all get together as a family at the beginning of each new year to celebrate our successes in the last year and set goals for the new year. We start with a a focusing talk by dad.  Then we spend 3-4 hours in solitude and silence where each family member journals on their successes in the last year and writes down goals for the new year.  After everyone takes time alone to document their successes and work on their individual goals, we come back together to share what we have written down.  This gives us a rich space in time to celebrate each other’s successes and become aware of how we can support each other’s goals. After we finished our time of sharing this January, we all sat around the table, clicked record and reflected on the experience.  As you listen to us discuss the following questions, we hope you will gain insights that could help you create a system like this, in your own way, in your own life.   What are some of your earliest memories of doing our Annual Gienger Family Goal Setting Retreats?   Can you describe what it has been like for you to do this when you were young kids?   How would you describe the actual process we have used in our annual goals setting retreats?   To the spouses who married in to the family (Teliah and Auren): Do you remember when was your first time joining us in an Annual Family Goal Setting Retreat?  What was it like for you to participate in this process? What do you think have been the benefits of doing this for you and for our family?  What’s the value of this from your perspective? What are some of the highlights or most meaningful elements of what we experienced or what you heard or shared in this year’s Annual Family Goal Setting Retreat? How do you see this carrying on into the next generation? Resources: Check out the Family ID podcast by Greg Gunn who was Lonnie's initial coach on this topic.  Kylon and Te referenced their excellent Successful Dropout podcast for young people looking for an alternative to the traditional institutional university education route.  After listening to the podcast, some have asked for a copy of the questions that we have used over the years to guide us through our celebration and goal setting process.  If you're interested, you can check out our Gienger Goal Setting Annual Retreat Questions. As with all systems, we hope you can learn something from our process...but please be sure to customize this system in a way that works best for you.  Thank You! Thanks again for listening to the show! If it has helped you in any way, please share it using the social media buttons you see on the page.   We'd also really appreciate any feedback or questions that might guide what we talk about in future episodes.    Additionally, reviews for the podcast on iTunes are extremely helpful and greatly appreciated! The author does a good job of covering the art and science of picking locks. He chose two of the most common types of locks for the bulk of his material which helps keep the focus of the book tight. He leads the reader from the basic operational principles of the locks, to flaws in the design & manufacture and finally how to pick the locks. The coverage of pick types and other tools of the trade round out the readers knowledge of the subject. His down to earth style and simple language help the reader understand the material and develop the skills to pick these types of locks. His logical progression of starting with one pin and working your way up to all the pins in the lock will help the reader build confidence in their skills. The final sections on bypassing the door reminds the reader that locks are part of a system and sometimes the way to defeat a system is not the direct approach. Overall I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars. Shmoocon Tickets??
