Let me be honest—I had no idea how profound a role fascia plays in our health. Jessica breaks it all down, explaining fascia as the body's “scaffolding,” its communication highway, and so much more. She shares how keeping fascia hydrated and healthy supports mobility, organ function, respiratory health, and beyond. Dr. Paul Mettler has been practicing physical therapy for 40 years. When he began working as a physical therapist, he was often frustrated and discouraged by the lack of functional improvement and long-term results of my patients using the standard myofascial, physical or manipulation therapies. Dr. Mettler discovered a way to rapidly identify and undo the damage caused by the inflammatory process in 1991. He originated a manual physical therapy method, to restructure (or restore) the scar tissue that connects injured tissue without causing further injury. This innovative technique originally called the Mettler Release Technique® or MRT® has been successfully used on over 20,000 patients over the past 25 years. Dr. Mettler decided to rename the technique to Dermal-Fascial Restoration® or DFR® in 2018 as technology had advanced to image restoration of the skin and fascia. DFR has been proven to reduce skin and fascial stiffness through High Frequency Shear Wave Elastography imaging. Dr. Schroder and I presented our findings using the Shear Wave to the Fourth International Fascia Research Congress in 2015. Our presentation was awarded 2nd place for overall clinical usefulness. Dr. Mettler was awarded the overall winning poster at the 2022 ICMT conference. He has been accepted to do an oral presentation at the 2022 Fascia Research Congress in Montreal, Canada. DFR, in combination with other therapies, can provide outstanding long-term relief from symptoms such as chronic muscle aching and stiffness, limited joint mobility, post – op surgical scars and stiffness and other symptoms by rapidly restoring the health and circulation of the affected area without creating further injury. We have an epidemic of chronic pain with addiction to pain medication. Many of my patients, colleagues and the greater medical community need to further invest in DFR evaluation and treatment. We feel it is very important to the assessment and treatment in overall management of musculoskeletal impairments. It is drug-free, non-invasive and cost-effective manual therapy with proven results for prevention and treatment of a wide range of injuries. Healthcare professionals and business owners We have created a number of in depth presentations for DFR over the years, and through them you will get a deep look at the DFR program, starting with the science. We are excited to announce our 2022-2023 DFR Therapy IPTA approval for 14 CE (6 on-line and 8 hands-on) visit us for more info at dfrtherapy.com Specialties: orthopedic/neuro-musculoskelatal injuries, sports injuries and MSK injury prevention https://dfrtherapy.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-mettler-1230467/ https://www.anatomyscapes.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/david-lesondak/message

For our 24th episode, I had the pleasure to sit down with Jill Miller. Jill is the creator of the self-care fitness formats Yoga Tune Up® and The Roll Model® Method. I first discovered Jill’s work about 5 years ago while looking for a way to heal a yoga injury. What I didn’t know at that moment was the profound impact this work was going to have to my life and my health.I suffer from endometriosis, and with March being the Endometriosis Awareness Month, I wanted to do an episode about one of the strategies that helped me deal with my symptoms. As an autoimmune disease it’s strongly affected by stress. Yoga Tune Up and the Roll Model Method have really helped me get a better understanding of my stress and gave me tools to down-regulate my nervous system so in turn, pain decreased pretty drastically. So I thought it would be a great way to talk about chronic pain management. As always, I really appreciate your support. Bo Forbes is a clinical psychologist, embodiment guide, urban contemplative, and research collaborator in the science of well-being. Her paradigm-bending work explores the body as an essential part of transformation and the inextricable links between individual and collective well-being. Bo’s work is interdisciplinary, and integrates emerging research in science, psychology, somatics, and contemplative practice with decades of experience on the front lines of somatic education. Since the 1990’s, her experience in the field of trauma and social epigenetics has included inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings, private practice, organizational consulting, somatic therapy, and scholarship. She has a unique perspective on embodiment: she works intimately with the body in relation to trauma, and has also experienced, written about, and spoken publicly about sexual assault and harassment. Her mother was a prisoner of war in World War II who between the ages of 7 and 12 was forced to march through Kenya, Uganda, and Siberia. And until the age of two, she lived with her parents on a Seneca reservation in New York before its destruction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; her master’s thesis focused on the bodily rituals of indigenous cultures. Bo co-teaches a course at Tufts University with colleague Kris Manjapra that focuses on colonialism, social justice, and the body. She is the founder of Embodied Awareness, an online education company, and teaches workshops and trainings internationally. She recently presented her work on interoception, connective tissue, and emotional health at the Fascia Research Congress in Berlin. She has written scholarly and lay articles for numerous leading magazines, and is the author of Yoga for Emotional Balance: Simple Practices to Help Relieve Anxiety and Depression and Her newest book on the science and practice of embodiment, is slated for publication in early 2020.

"Don't Be At Battle With Your Body" Jill Miller What an honor to speak with longtime industry leader Jill Miller. In this conversation Jill shares her backstory of being overweight as a young child. She has experienced the bullying that comes along with not being a part of the "in" crowd, and talks about the pain that came with not fitting in. It was Jane Fonda Videos that her mother was working out to, that moved Jill from the couch to a life of exercise, but they also introduced her to a powerful way to control both her body and her life. Both Jill and I have struggled with body dysmorphia, and we touch on the eating disorders that consumed our life. Jill shares that her body was a symptom of the deep wounds that many of us experience growing up, and candidly opens up about her long journey back to true health and wellness. We discus how movement can either be a weapon or a powerful tool, and it is up to us to listen and honor our body. Jill shares her reasons for developing Yoga Tune Up® and The Roll Model® Method and the heart and hustle that was needed to get her knowledge into the world on a large scale. She talks about her desire for people to feel good and comfortable in their own bodies, and that this was the main inspiration for her to keep forging ahead. Jill was determined to create an adjunct way of treating and healing the body, one which could be used in tandem with any other type of movement. We talk about what it took for her "overnight" success: from her start when she was solo and traveling all over the country, city to city, studio to studio to today, where she now oversees more than 500 Yoga Tune Up Teachers. Jill talks about her methodology, which is a process based movement format that can work with any type of body. She shares the blind spots that we often have in our own body: Overuse, Underuse, Misuse or Confuse. We discuss what it takes to keep moving forward when you have people pushing against your beliefs and what it takes to let the the negativity slide away and to keep believing. Jill shares the importance of having cheerleaders who are rooting for you and that for Jill, many of her greatest supporters were her students and the Group Fitness Managers at Equinox. We wrap up the conversation talking about Jill’s recent hip replacement. At the time of this recording she was only Five weeks post operation. Jill shares the vulnerability and the lessons that have come through this pivotal moment in her career, and how she is determined to use this for good. She also realizes that she is much more than her "hip."
