10 Barriers to Hearing God's Voice 1. Worries-When you worry, your mind is pre-occupied and focused on your worries. God speaks to you when you ask Him questions or when you are praising Him, and you aren't doing either of these when you worry.2. Complaining/Grumbling-This is when you are whining about everything that is going wrong, feeling sorry for yourself, and not seeing any of your blessings. The Egyptians did this in the desert with the manna that God was giving them to eat. When we complain and grumble, God might rebuke us, but He will likely not talk to us.3. Resentment-Feeling like you've been treated unfairly, harboring bitterness in your heart.4. Envy-Wanting what other people have, and not being grateful or not even seeing what you have been blessed with.5. Fear-You don't trust God or think He has your best interest in mind.6. Weakness-You think your prayers aren't working or that blessings, answered prayers and hearing from God must be for everyone else, but not for you.7. Conformity-Living the way the World lives in contradiction to the Bible, and not repenting or seeing a problem with it.8. Vanity-Being worried about what other people might think of you or how you might look if you become that Jesus freak that's always talking about Jesus or being a goodie two-shoes.9. Our Past-You think that because of what you've done in the past, that you aren't worthy or deserving of a relationship with God. You might feel guilty or disqualified.10. Not taking the time to listen. Many of these things are negative emotions, and they tend to be pervasive. Meaning, they run deep, and they are hard to just turn around. This is because they are a symptom of deeper wounds that you have not healed. It could be from an abusive parent, an abusive ex, or just a harsh word spoken to you that cut you to the core. But all of these can be healed, and I share with you how to heal these wounds, hear from God & become all He created you to be in the Tenacious Woman Blueprint. There are very few people left in this world that are just like you, very young with a good heart, been through so much, working a lot of jobs, still trying to help people when you're adopting three kids for the family. Let me just say, I was just like you at a very young age. Reach out to me, I'm gonna do everything I can to make sure you get that job, that you get all the assistance you need to make sure that you are helping those kids and that you are training them, raising them in the right way that they should go. I hope that they are raised with your heart and with your character, with your morals, with your strength, with your patience and with your wisdom. Patience, Strength, and Wisdom. Those are the main three things that I usually pray to God for and that my son has. Because you need patience to get through any situation, that devil will keep poking you. You need strength to get through everything because pain, fear, anxiety, panic, even love. You need it to get out that bed, to just make one more step, to just not say a word to just not make a move, to not hit someone, you just need strength to just be calm. You need wisdom to know when to go to God, to know when to shut up, to know when to speak your mind, to know when to be you, to know when to be fake, and to know when to let the people who are being fake gossip and let them do it. Just isolate and be yourself. Again, it may be strange to pray for those three things every day, but please do, because the more you ask for three things, the stronger you are, the more patience you have with other people, and the wiser you become. It may not be the knowledge you gain for economics in the world, national, but it will be the wisdom that you gain, trust me, for dealing with human beings. humans are the most ignorant beings in the world, we really are. We're also the most hypocritical beings in the world. I just want to say, what you're doing is amazing, keep doing it, please! This is a thank you to a beautiful soul here in Northeast San Antonio. If you want to figure out what is standing in the way of you following through with and executing on the worthy ideas and how to even decide whether an idea is worthy of execution or not, you are in the right place. Almost 100% of ideas fail to be executed due to a few simple reasons. 1. The REWARD was not worth the RISK being taken at the time. This will almost always take out of the game before you even begin. If the risk is highly financial and you aren't willing to risk it now, move on until you find an idea that doesn't risk as much. If the risk is personal and you aren't willing to pick yourself up again if you fail, then move onto an idea that isn't as risky with your emotions and person until you've strengthened that part of who you are.  2. Fear - You let fear decide whether you should continue forward. If you've done the risk/reward in step 1. Then fear is just being a jerk and making you feel like you're standing a cliff and jumping off without a soft landing. Fear has a way of doing that, it makes it feel SO real to you in your emotional mind that big bad things will happen if you fail. The truth is whether you fail or not is irrelevant. Day 2: Regeneration Superpower Today's challenge helps you to build your regeneration superpower to cut off the old stressful thoughts and stories and grow new more supportive ones. REGENERATE NEW THOUGHTS IN 3 easy steps Set up your paper with a line down the middle of the paper. Write fear/thoughts at the top of the first column and affirmation/new thoughts on the other column. STEP 1: Let the fears flow first. Brain dump and let it out. What are your most hidden concerns about a situation, about yourself in that situation, etc. write down all your future and past fears and thoughts. This can be something coming in the future that is giving you anxiety or a past experience you just can't seem to let go of. STEP 2: Get quiet: Get quiet. Take a few deep breaths. Have a sip of water or your tea. Ask yourself, what am I feeling when I'm thinking these thoughts? Are they true? Can I absolutely know they are true? Am I willing to consider seeing things a little differently? STEP 3: Re-Write your Fear: You can try turning your fear into an affirmation. How might you be able to see and know it differently? You can try turning your statement around on yourself. This is especially helpful when you're mad/angry/frustrated at another. In the IG TV video I share how “She hurt me” becomes “I hurt myself” because of all that I was thinking. Try substituting “I” with “they” or changing your statement into the opposite “She hurt me” to “She helped me” or “she didn't hurt me”. DM me and share @morganruffuplift on Instagram! Taking the Pulse on Today's Energies with Dr. Jeanette is taking callers today!  What is FEAR? You say you don't have any and lead a fearless life? Looking at fear, anxiety and worry in a spiritual life and the life of elders. Are we living a life of survival, security, protection, and self preservation? What is the fear that is driving us? Fear of survival, fear of pain, fear of destruction, fear of loss of love, fear of isolation, fear of being hurt, fear of not being taken care of? How are the elderly adjusting to life today and asking for help?  We are seeing many things playing out on social media these days about the CoronaVirus; from turning away from all the hype in denial to engaging in fearful self protection of living around people.  We are talking about becoming aware of what is showing up for you, how to engage with the emotions and how to create a daily life that is flexible and open to change with the energy you hold. If you are very fearful and someone tells you there is nothing to fear, then you have a choice; you can listen to them and follow their beliefs, or you can have tons of fear and let it over take you, or you can find where the fear is coming from in your beliefs. Ever wonder why we worry? Where does worry come from? Anxiety? A neurological disorder? Is it Pessimism? Nina & Brian share some of their research on this topic and explain the human psyche behind worry, why we should stop and how to get rid of it for good. Does anything good ever come from worrying? Think about this for a second. Why worry? For what? It clouds judgement, it debilitates solutions, causes disdain, depression and mood swings, and then parlays into other areas of your life like a leech…. Is anything really THAT worth it? NO. Two types of worrying people: Always make things up. Believing that something bad will happen, all based on past experience or absorbed from the content they consume so they worry and think the worst; negative Nancys, always quick to stop you from doing something your way. Something happens, not as planned, and they project how it negatively affects the next day week and entire year now which throws off everything for them The Science Behind Worry- The Human Psyche: Control: It’s a craving for control. And the more we worry the less able our bodies can deal with something when it doesn't go our way or something happens we didn't expect. Programmed hereditary : In doing some research, I learned that worry is a habit of anxious or anxiety disorder. I learned that people who have a parent or parents who constantly worry are more apt to slowly pick up on these behaviors as well, as they get older they tend to fall onto the more serious side of anxiety disorder than their parents who were just chronic worriers. If that doesn't make you want to stop worrying, I don't know what will. How dare we take on the negative traits of our families and live in never ending turmoil? Believing in worst as opposed to best; aka pessimist v optimist. Default thinking. Confusion between attachment to past and the lesson learned Feeling lack as opposed to abundance Fear You want something or someone out of pressure. It’s made of crackle paste, laid thickly upon a small canvas, painted with teal blue watercolor. One thick, deep, wobbly vertical line, resembling a river, was created by removing various bits of the crackle paste along the jagged edges that the medium creates as it dries. The river is painted darker, and it’s more brown than blue.   The word “yes,” created with an old fashioned typewriter, is cut out and pasted dozens of times, in a strip going down the right edge of the piece, with fewer words at the top of the line, and a thicker cluster of “yes”es towards the bottom. The words wrap around the painted edge of the canvas.   Abstract, cat-whisker-like stitching completes this work. Some of the stitches cross the river, as if holding it together. One tiny, type-written “yes” is pasted atop each stitch.   [Story:]   The wind was blowing through my hair. Birds were singing. The sun was shining, and caressing my skin with a blanket of warmth on that spring day.   I sat on the big rock in my front yard… I’d been planning an inspired day of writing since the day I first set eyes on the natural chair outside my dad’s new house.   At first I just took it all in, the warmth, the rustling songs of nature moving and waking up into spring. I looked out at the neighborhood, and the sky with passing clouds. I was feeling… happy… but I still wasn’t inspired.   I opened my pink binder full of loose leaf. I stared at the blank page.   Why wasn’t I inspired?   I wanted to write but there weren’t any words. There wasn’t anything interesting enough to say.   “Write what you know,” echoed in my head; the common advice I’d heard and read from all the experts everywhere. I didn’t know anything. I was only 13.   What I didn’t realize was that I knew enough… that the experience I was having that day was enough to put my pen down and just start writing.   It wasn’t until I started reading Melissa Dinwiddie’s work, many years later, that I started to realize where I was going wrong.   Number five of the ten guideposts in her book, The Creative Sandbox Way, is to, “Just start anywhere.”   Oh, I could’ve used that advice as a young writer… I shut my pink binder that day 20 years ago without writing a single word. I found it years later, this binder meant for my writing, and it was still totally blank, aside from some yellowing around the edges from all that waiting around.   “Just start anywhere.” I’m so grateful for these three words. In fact, just starting anywhere is how I started writing what you’re hearing right now.   I had Melissa’s painting and the urge to write about how it inspired me. But how? There’s so much! How could I begin to sort through the journey this piece has taken me on?   The river running through Stitch River Yes is like my fear: so deeply etched in my cultural programming, in my human instincts.   Fear: this safety precaution, this emergency brake that stops all except your fight or flight instincts and adrenaline.   Me: I want to start a podcast!   Fear: But what if you’re too busy to release an episode every single week? If you’re not as perfect as a NPR radio show, in quality as well as consistency, well then you’ll just suck, and no one will take you seriously.   Me: I want to tell stories.   Fear: Who cares about your stories? No one will listen. What could you possibly write that will matter?   Me: I want to write stories channeled through the experience of other artist’s work.   Fear: You are not qualified to write about art much less interpret it. You know nothing about art. You’re going to look stupid. People will find out how stupid you are when you interpret things wrong.   Me: You know what, Fear? You’re getting a bit ridiculous. How can an interpretation of my own experience of something be wrong? I think I’ll take the risk… because even if you’re right and all those things happen… I won’t be any worse off than I am right now.   No one can listen to a podcast that doesn’t exist. No one can care about a story that remains unwritten. No one can be an expert without first being a novice.   Fear? You still there?   …   Don’t worry, he’ll be back. His story doesn’t change. He cares about me, so I hear him out, but I can’t let him chase me away. At the same time, I can’t be afraid to face the possibility that he might be right, either. I have to say yes to the risks and move on, because when I really break it down… the worst case scenario rarely happens, and even when it does, I’m usually still alive after it’s all over, and I’ve likely learned something valuable from the experience as well.   I can’t make the fear go away... but maybe I can hold it together, not let it get any bigger, stitch it closed so I can say yes… so I can stay and fight. So it’s not so scary that I have to run from it. So I can flow with the fear, use the current as the force that drives me forward, instead of letting it flood over and drown my creativity.   It’s safer to stay on the banks of fear’s river, keeping the dark, dangerous rapids at bay. But if you want to go places… if you want to get there faster… well than the river of fear is much faster than the safe, slow hike you’ll take trying to avoid it.   Melissa’s painting is my reminder to fight. To say yes to the scary things that won’t stop haunting my thoughts.   I’m saying yes to being messy. I’m saying yes to creating work that might not be perfect. I’m saying yes to facing my fears. I’m saying yes to success AND failure, because one cannot exist without the other. And I believe, the point of life is to experience them both.   Besides, the idea of this podcast becoming the equivalent to my pink binder, with those pathetically blank and yellowed pages, is far scarier to me now than any kind of failure could ever be.   Because the simple act of doing something… anything, in this creative process is worth it.   Why? That’s something Melissa Dinwiddie can explain to you better than me. Her book, The Creative Sandbox Way, is an interactive workbook that I highly recommend for every person… not just quote on quote, creative people, but everyone. Because we. are. all. creative. “If we’re growing we’re always going to be out of our comfort zone.” - John Maxwell Stop being so comfortable! But isn’t comfort the ultimate goal? Being comfortable financially, relationally, emotionally, physically, spiritually? Our culture pushes comfort. The attitude of culture that has impacted everyone of us is, “Just do whatever feels good, whenever you want, and with whomever you want.” If something gets uncomfortable…we have a tendency to just give up. Think about that for a moment. How often have you seen this to be true. Instead of digging in and pressing through the difficult and uncomfortable situation or conversation, people just simply walk away. But where does that really get us? We will just bounce from one place to another all along the same plane…never growing. Keeping our potential locked away deep inside of our own fears and doubts. Before we discuss how to Grow through Discomfort, let’s first look at a quick list of what causes us to be comfortable. Comfortable in a way that causes us to get stuck. Causes of Comfortability:Cushy job and pay. Now, this isn’t a bad thing. But if we stop pursuing the next level we can find our current status a trap. Keep turning to sleeping, eating, and entertainment instead of dealing with growth. When we get stressed or feel pressure, we need to be careful to not reach for the easy and quick fix. Feeling as though you have “arrived”. Add on to that, comparing ourselves to the wrong people. Listen, it’s always easy to find someone who you think you are better than. So then we pat ourselves on the back and get stuck. Fear of Change and Changing. We shouldn’t fear failure or change. What we should fear is being in the same exact place a year from now. Self Doubt. Let me ask you…”who told you that you can’t do ______?” Don’t let the opinions of someone else define your life & purpose! Laziness - I’ll get to it tomorrow “We change our behavior when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing. Consequences give us the pain that motivates us to change.” - Henry Cloud Being Stuck Stinks There is pain in Leadership Growth. But it's a pain that is incredible worth it!“Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle.” - Napoleon Hill5 Ways to Grow through Discomfort: First answer “Why do I want and need to grow?” Identify where you need to grow...what your first step is & do it. Try something new - live a little. Change your mindset from “I Can’t” to “I Can & Will"Discipline, not Motivation is the goal. Be disciplined to do the plan. Getting up early, working out, finishing a project, etc… Set growth goals and start moving that direction…now!Push through the Fear: “You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-400 – David Crosses the Jordan (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4400.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Hello, my friends and welcome to the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-400.  Yeah, that's right, 400th numbered episode.  That's something.  I still get the occasional letter form someone who has found inspiration or comfort in what you and I, my friends, do here on the RunRunLive Podcast.  And by George, if we're still helping people or adding value, we'll keep going! A couple notes about last week's show.  I said Buddy was 14, which was technically correct, but he turned 15 this week.  The old dog.  He doesn't like getting up in the morning now, especially when he has to troop outside in the freezing cold.  The other thing I forgot to add was that I got so flustered by the karmic peeing - pooping incident at the pet store that I forgot to use the coupon that I went home to get originally that started the whole thing. Ce'st la vie. I'm making some progress with my nutrition.  I'm going on over 30 days of pretty clean eating and starting to see some results.  My strategy was to start early and not wait until after the holiday.  This way even if I could only battle to a tie, I won't be starting my spring training cycle in a hole.  If I look at data from previous years, I typically lose it big time in December and it costs me 5-10 pounds. If I have any chance of re-qualifying this year with the new standards, I'm going to have to be 10 pounds lighter going into the race. My legs and pacing continue to give me trouble.  Coach says it's a hangover from the 100 miler.  I just can't seem to find my easy zone 2 pace on the roads.  I'm working it.  Trying to be patient.  On today's show we have our friend David Foss who took an adventure to the Dead Sea to run a trail marathon.  In section one I'll probably give you a brief recap of my Mill Cities race. In section 2 I'll talk about a book I've been reading.  I read a lot of books.  Reading is my go-to vehicle for absorbing content.  I have to be careful because I can be influenced by books as well.  I'll read the latest book on XYZ and find myself all of a sudden trying to put XYZ into full blown practice.  My filter is not the best sometimes.  … This time of year is hard for a lot of people.  I don't know why.  Maybe it's the holidays force you to deal with family stuff.  Maybe it's the cold and dark.  Maybe it's something seasonal with our species.  I was reading an emotional outpouring from a woman on the social media site where she was really struggling.  She had abusive relationships, she was injured and she couldn't shake the feelings of desperation and depression.  The walls closing in.  I suppose that's one positive thing about social media is that people can use it to reach out to the community for help.  Sure enough there were a long trail of positive responses.  People trying to help.  It was a positive response to a cry for help.  111 responses as of last viewing.  I happened to notice a post that our friend who is in a related profession shared.  So I copied it and reposted it.  “Did you know that if you text "Home" to 741741 when you are feeling depressed, sad, or going through any kind of emotional crisis, a crisis worker will text you back immediately and continue to text with you? Many people, especially younger ones, prefer text to talking on the phone. It's a free service to anyone-- teens, adults, etc.-- who lives in the US. Depression is real, you are not alone.” 741741 I have not tried it, but I trust Greg – it's in the show notes if you need it. I also responded that “We are all basket cases. Some of us just hide it better. Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … Section one – Mill Cities Relay- http://runrunlive.com/mill-cities-relay-2018 Voices of reason – the conversation David Foss During the business day, David is a professional geologist and Massachusetts Licensed Site Professional, focusing on Brownfields redevelopment and the productive reuse of regulated hazardous waste sites.  After hours, David is an endurance athlete making time to test his limits and expand his horizons.  In 2012 he joined some friends for a New Years' 5K and came to the realization that something was missing from his life.  He was a busy environmental professional, husband, and father of two, but what was missing was the time to clear his head, think, and get back to nature.  Endurance sports (road cycling, kayaking, and running) helped round out David's world view.  Since that first 5K race, he has found distance running to be a path to happiness and mindfulness.  He has run 4 road marathons (one DNF), 2 trail marathons, 4 trail 50K's, a 50-Mile race, and a 12-hour race.   After running 57-miles in 12 hours in the rain and dark, David shared the following blog post:  Suffering is Optional In 2015 David Followed the “Marathon BQ” training plan and grabbed that golden ring, running a 3:19 to qualify for Boston.  Running the Boston Marathon was an amazing, magical experience.  In contrast, this interview is a discussion of the Eilat Desert Marathon in the Negev Desert in southern Israel.  The Desert Marathon was an amazing experience - - and as different from Boston as can be imagined.  David is a regular contributor to “The Extra Mile Podcast” and shares his thoughts on running and life in the Spreaker podcast:  “Running Virtually” by Just-Plain-Dave. Section two – Fear – You can handle it - Outro Well, my friends you have spurred your camel through the eye pf the needle that is the the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-400.  I'm sure it was a biblical, real old testament, experience. Next up for me is the Groton Marathon.  It's a made up race in the town I grew up in.  I've got a handful of people coming out to run with me.  Hopefully the weather won't be so dreadful this year.  There's construction at the place we start and finish so I'm going to have to figure out how to put in another couple hundred feet somewhere! Or just cut the course short.  I mean who really cares, right? If you want to swing by Groton Massachusetts, we have all sorts of distances, not just the marathon.  I usually get 15 -20 knuckleheads from my running club to show.  I think David Foss is going to come up.  The dates work out well this year in that the marathon will be on the 30th so I get a day to recover for the Hangover Classic on the 1st.  Then I jump into some serious training for Boston.  January and February are the big months.  I'm going to talk to coach and see if we can't load it up and get some good miles in.  I'd like to be over-confident going in.  Because, as we all know by now, you never know what the weather is going to be.  If you want to follow my training I use the Daily FitBook platform.  My Garmin data also updates Garmin Connect, Strava and Myfitness Pal – as far as I know.  … I love adventures.  I've been traveling most of my career and I always enjoy the spaciousness and freedom of business travel.  I haven't been getting out as much as I like to in my last couple roles.  Which gives me less fodder for storytelling.  Thanks to David for sharing his travel adventure with us.  I felt like I was there.  I could feel the dry heat and smell the dust.  The dust of centuries.  The dust of civilizations. The dust of history. The first crusade went through where he was.  It was the only recorded time the Europeans used knights in full armor on heavy horse for a frontal charge.  It worked well the first time.  You can imagine how surprising it would have been to have these characters show up in your back yard.   A couple hundred of these guys in heavy armor charging down on you.  As far as historians know it was only used that once in the beginning of the first crusade. Turns out riding a giant horse around the desert in a full metal jacket wasn't the most effective or flexible means of desert warfare.  I understand.  I get uncomfortable in phoenix riding around in a full suit of clothing.  Last week I was in the glorious Holiday Inn at the Cincinnati airport.  I was out at dinner with the client and say myself next to their marketing person who I will be working with.  Come to find out she's running her first 50K that weekend!  You can bet she regretted broaching the topic of endurance running with me! You see, our tribe is everywhere, wandering over in deserts of Negev and over deserts in Hebron KY.  Groan all you want.  I own the Dad jokes. and I'll see you out there. Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … Section one – Mill Cities Relay- http://runrunlive.com/mill-cities-relay-2018 Voices of reason – the conversation David Foss During the business day, David is a professional geologist and Massachusetts Licensed Site Professional, focusing on Brownfields redevelopment and the productive reuse of regulated hazardous waste sites.  After hours, David is an endurance athlete making time to test his limits and expand his horizons.  In 2012 he joined some friends for a New Years’ 5K and came to the realization that something was missing from his life.  He was a busy environmental professional, husband, and father of two, but what was missing was the time to clear his head, think, and get back to nature.  Endurance sports (road cycling, kayaking, and running) helped round out David’s world view.  Since that first 5K race, he has found distance running to be a path to happiness and mindfulness.  He has run 4 road marathons (one DNF), 2 trail marathons, 4 trail 50K’s, a 50-Mile race, and a 12-hour race.   After running 57-miles in 12 hours in the rain and dark, David shared the following blog post:  Suffering is Optional In 2015 David Followed the “Marathon BQ” training plan and grabbed that golden ring, running a 3:19 to qualify for Boston.  Running the Boston Marathon was an amazing, magical experience.  In contrast, this interview is a discussion of the Eilat Desert Marathon in the Negev Desert in southern Israel.  The Desert Marathon was an amazing experience - - and as different from Boston as can be imagined.  David is a regular contributor to “The Extra Mile Podcast” and shares his thoughts on running and life in the Spreaker podcast:  “Running Virtually” by Just-Plain-Dave. Section two – Fear – You can handle it - Outro Well, my friends you have spurred your camel through the eye pf the needle that is the the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-400.  I’m sure it was a biblical, real old testament, experience. Next up for me is the Groton Marathon.  It’s a made up race in the town I grew up in.  I’ve got a handful of people coming out to run with me.  Hopefully the weather won’t be so dreadful this year.  There’s construction at the place we start and finish so I’m going to have to figure out how to put in another couple hundred feet somewhere! Or just cut the course short.  I mean who really cares, right? If you want to swing by Groton Massachusetts, we have all sorts of distances, not just the marathon.  I usually get 15 -20 knuckleheads from my running club to show.  I think David Foss is going to come up.  The dates work out well this year in that the marathon will be on the 30th so I get a day to recover for the Hangover Classic on the 1st.  Then I jump into some serious training for Boston.  January and February are the big months.  I’m going to talk to coach and see if we can’t load it up and get some good miles in.  I’d like to be over-confident going in.  Because, as we all know by now, you never know what the weather is going to be.  If you want to follow my training I use the Daily FitBook platform.  My Garmin data also updates Garmin Connect, Strava and Myfitness Pal – as far as I know.  … I love adventures.  I’ve been traveling most of my career and I always enjoy the spaciousness and freedom of business travel.  I haven’t been getting out as much as I like to in my last couple roles.  Which gives me less fodder for storytelling.  Thanks to David for sharing his travel adventure with us.  I felt like I was there.  I could feel the dry heat and smell the dust.  The dust of centuries.  The dust of civilizations. The dust of history. The first crusade went through where he was.  It was the only recorded time the Europeans used knights in full armor on heavy horse for a frontal charge.  It worked well the first time.  You can imagine how surprising it would have been to have these characters show up in your back yard.   A couple hundred of these guys in heavy armor charging down on you.  As far as historians know it was only used that once in the beginning of the first crusade. Turns out riding a giant horse around the desert in a full metal jacket wasn’t the most effective or flexible means of desert warfare.  I understand.  I get uncomfortable in phoenix riding around in a full suit of clothing.  Last week I was in the glorious Holiday Inn at the Cincinnati airport.  I was out at dinner with the client and say myself next to their marketing person who I will be working with.  Come to find out she’s running her first 50K that weekend!  You can bet she regretted broaching the topic of endurance running with me! You see, our tribe is everywhere, wandering over in deserts of Negev and over deserts in Hebron KY.  Groan all you want.  I own the Dad jokes. and I’ll see you out there. Are you confused why you make awful job-changing decisions? There are obviously many factors that contribute to your decisions and decision-making abilities, but there are essentially 11 reasons you make bad job-changing decisions. Below are the summary and highlights from the original podcast. I’ve included a handy, free decision-making checklist to ensure you’re in order. All my Tips for Work and Life® blog subscribers will be alerted as we get closer. INCOMPLETE INFORMATION You didn’t gather enough information. How many times have you thought if I’d only have known that then? There are usually two issues here. It’s likely your inventory of questions or topic areas to investigate was incomplete. Additionally, you probably didn’t dig deep enough (even if you had a complete inventory of questions.) Overcome this issue by creating an exhaustive list of questions to ensure you’re covering everything. Make sure to keep asking “Why?” until you can’t ask “Why?” anymore. There is no friendlier, joint three-letter word complete sentence I can think of when it comes to your decision-making prowess. For the really ambitious, there is loads (I mean loads) of insight on decision-making in my award-winning book The Hiring Prophecies: Psychology Behind Recruiting Successful Employees. You can get an entire digital experience, including the eBook, audio and guides for free here. You had more options but didn’t know it. You were lazy when it came to investigating all your options. Make sure to think creatively and exhaust all avenues. INCORRECT INFORMATION You’re looking where you shouldn’t be (or placing too much weight on the wrong information). Social Media Sites, LinkedIn, and Corporate Sites (Glassdoor, Vault, Wetfeet) are filled with angriness (mostly). Don’t place too much weight on information where the deck is stacked. Overcome this issue by keeping all you intake in its proper context. And, make sure to do you own investigation before you’re willing to take someone else’s (especially a stranger’s) word for it. This is, after all, your career. You expect good advice from someone who doesn’t have all the information. Here’s a scenario. You’ve just given five minutes worth of your (own) bias-filled information to people (a mentor, confidant, co-worker, spouse or whomever) and asked them for advice. If this needs further explaining, go back to You Didn’t Gather Enough Information. They’re now you. MOTIVES You weren’t clear (with yourself) on your (own) motives. Remember your whys! When people go through a lengthy (interviewing) process, for some reason they forget the reasons why they started the process. They also tend to abandon or minimize their (happiness) criteria in favor of the shiny bells and toys the employer has placed in front of them. You were driven by someone else’s motives. Don’t do it for your parents, friends, coworkers, spouse, or anyone else. You’ll resent them. This is your life! FEAR You fear loss. You’re worried you’ll lose what you already have (your reputation, easy commute, a job you can do in your sleep, your friendships with coworkers, etc.) Make sure to keep your outlook balanced. You’re gaining much too. You fear hardship. Boo hoo this new job will be hard. You’re not sure you’re up for the challenge. Chances are, if a company wants to hire you, you’re qualified and will kick butt if you put some effort into it! OVERCONFIDENCE You’re bravado makes you senseless. Overconfidence stems from many sources, but for our purposes assume it comes from your lack of correct or complete information. Just make sure to investigate wholly and you’ll be in great shape. (P.S. Do not mistake overconfidence for confidence.) BIASES You have the status-quo bias. You have a strong preference to keep your life as-is! You also think any change is a loss of what you currently have instead of a gain for the better. Do not focusing solely on what you’re losing or place greater emphasis than is necessary. You have the sunk-cost bias. You’re placing too much weight on time you’ve spent and what you’ve accumulated (something you’ve built, any labor of love, memories, etc.). You need to remove your emotional attachment and rechannel it. One of the easiest way’s to do this is ask yourself, “If I wasn’t currently working here, would this job, or the new one, align better to my criteria?” Bam. There they are. Eleven nasty ones.
