In today's solo episode, I talk about the importance of finishing what you start, because God has a purpose and a plan for our lives. We all have a message to share and when we complete the task God has set before us, He can use our writing for His glory. The passages I used to illustrate my points are: 2 Corinthians 8:10–11; Ephesians 2:10; 3:20–21; and Romans 8: 28–30. All passages of scripture are taken from the King James version of the Holy Bible. My book recommendation is Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done by Jon Acuff. In this episode, I am joined by my guest David Richman, who is an author, public speaker, endurance athlete, and an amazing human being. Who has gone from this journey of an overweight smoker to an ultra-endurance athlete and done hundreds of races and marathons and even a five-thousand-mile bike ride. In this conversation, we're going to have a very in-depth discussion about what it means to be willing to fight for what you believe in to push yourself into ultimately being willing to discover who you are. I love this conversation with David because it reminded me of the truth of what I believe about life which is, to some extent, there is a struggle, some suffering that is necessary to find success. There is the willingness to battle yourself to cross that finish line which ultimately becomes the differentiating factor between success and failure. This conversation was potent, and I hope that what you will take away from it is the truth and understanding that you can do anything that you want in your life. What does it really take to cross the finish line of life? What do you really have to do to be able to take an idea and turn it into a reality? How do you make a dream become your truth? This is a rerun of the best of the best from the Untapped Podcast. The original episode show notes are here: https://nataliesisson.com/016Given we all have 24 hours in a day, I'm constantly surprised by how many people squander that precious time and waste it on things they know they shouldn't be doing.I see this all the time with my friends, loved ones and my peers, and do my best to share my knowledge on habits, time management and tools to help them. Most of the time they end up resenting where their time went and what they didn't achieve. So how can you avoid this?Well, you can start by listening to this podcast episode where I divulge the 6 Rules to Finishing What You Start.I've read my fair share of books and one of the most inspiring is Peter Hollin's “Finish What You Start”. In this book, he shares his lifelong curiosity around how we manage our time and also why we don't finish the things that we start. He then goes into a plethora of practical ways to reclaim our time and actually get things done! One of the methods he suggests, that I found to be a real eye-opener, is creating a manifesto. A manifesto, in his words, is nothing more than a set of rules to follow everyday.By having this manifesto as your guiding principle, you immediately place a value on your time and activities that makes you prioritize what's important, and it acts as a guiding star for any new projects you may want to start, and to avoid any distractions that will inevitably come your way.He also shares 6 rules to finishing what you start, and I divulge these on this podcast episode, but in a nutshell they are:Rule 1: Are you acting out of laziness? If so, is this a characterization you want about yourself?Rule 2: Three major tasks a day, maximum.Rule 3: Create daily limitations and requirements for yourself.Rule 4: Reaffirm your intentions by stating “I want,” “I will,” and “I won't” statements.Rule 5: Try to look into the future, 10 minutes, hours, and days at a time. Do you like what you see when you consider not following through?Rule 6: It's just 10 minutes, right? So if you want to quit, it's just 10 minutes. And if you need to wait, it's just 10 minutes.I go into more detail on what each of these rules means and how to apply them and also share How to write a manifestoHow to reaffirm your intentionsResourcesRead this book by Peter Hollins – Finish What You Start: The Art of Following Through, Taking Action, Executing, & Self-Discipline Read this book by Chris Guillebeau – The Art of Non-ConformityLifePilot – my system and methodology for turning your dreams into reality that lets you map out your life and goals each quarter, month, week and every day. MJ Preston knows the importance of returning to unfinished work. After sitting with a manuscript for over two decades, he made the decision to revise and release it as The Equinox in 2011. Little did he know, the novel would reach the quarterfinals of Amazon's Breakthrough Awards and win critical acclaim from various authors, even being compared to the likes of Stephen King. MJ has released ten novels and also pursues art in his free time. His latest publication, Four is available below. From Amazon.com: To my neighbors, I am a quiet and assuming guy who works blue-collar. What they don't know is that I also write dark speculative fiction. My work has been printed all over the world. I have four novels on the market and a fifth and sixth in production. My short fiction is available with numerous pubs, including magazines and anthologies. I have my own writing style but would say I was influenced by authors like Robert R. McCammon, Joe R. Lansdale, and John Sandford. Whether you're traditionally published or indie, writing a good book is only the first step in becoming a successful author. The days of just turning a manuscript into your editor and walking away are gone. If you want to succeed in today's publishing world, you need to understand every aspect of the business - editing, formatting, marketing, contracts. It all starts with a good book, then the real work begins. Join international bestselling author J.D. Barker and indie powerhouses, J. Today, I invited my dear friend Charlie Gilkey back on the show to talk about the subject of his new book, Start Finishing: How To Go From Idea To Done. It's perfect for this month we're spending on resilience. You see, Start Finishing, sounds like a book on productivity—and it is. But it's the kind of productivity book that only a philosopher could write. And this is the kind of interview on productivity, decision-making, planning, and doing your best work that only a philosopher could give. If you don't know Charlie already, let me give you a bit of background. Charlie is a PhD candidate in philosophy at the University of Nebraska. He was a logistics officer in the Army National Guard and was deployed in Iraq. He's now the co-founder & CEO of Productive Flourishing, which helps people build better businesses through strategic planning, system development, self-mastery, and personal effectiveness. I wanted to find out what resilience has to do with the way we do—or do not—complete the projects that we start and the goals we half-heartedly commit to. My conversation with Charlie certainly provided some answers to that question—and a whole lot more. During Sunday morning service on June 23, 2019, Pastor James Lilly delivered a message entitled, "Finishing What You Start!"
Given we all have 24 hours in a day, I'm constantly surprised by how many people squander that precious time and waste it on things they know they shouldn’t be doing.I see this all the time with my friends, loved ones and my peers, and do my best to share my knowledge on habits, time management and tools to help them. Most of the time they end up resenting where their time went and what they didn't achieve. So how can you avoid this?Well, you can start by listening to this podcast episode where I divulge the 6 Rules to Finishing What You Start.I've read my fair share of books and one of the most inspiring is Peter Hollin's "Finish What You Start". If so, is this a characterization you want about yourself?Rule 2: Three major tasks a day, maximum.Rule 3: Create daily limitations and requirements for yourself.Rule 4: Reaffirm your intentions by stating “I want,” “I will,” and “I won’t” statements.Rule 5: Try to look into the future, 10 minutes, hours, and days at a time. Do you like what you see when you consider not following through?Rule 6: It’s just 10 minutes, right? So if you want to quit, it’s just 10 minutes. And if you need to wait, it’s just 10 minutes.I go into more detail on what each of these rules means and how to apply them and also share How to write a manifestoHow to reaffirm your intentions See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
If you’re going to change, you have to consider your beliefs about your capacity for change. If you tell yourself that you never finish anything or describe yourself as a quitter, you probably feel defeated and don’t end up changing your actions. That’s how the think-feel-act cycle works, right? Listen to this week’s episode to hear why challenging this thought and countering your brain’s confirmation bias are incredibly important for changing your habits. When Jesus came to earth as a human, he associated with some unsavory people His ministry took Him to many people who were less than perfect. He would associate with sinners, politicians, adulterers and people who were possessed by demons. God will assocate with all type of people except for one: the one that turns back. In our text, Jesus gives an example of a man who sets out to build a tower. He specifically said a tower. Not a house. A tower is a more significant endeavor than building a house. This analogy carries on to life. We are not building an ordinary life. We are building a spiritual structure that requires planning and work. We are building for eternity and we cannot afford to get it wrong. We certainly cannot afford to begin building, and then not be able to finish. This is not a trivial undertaking. It takes and requires a great deal of planning and execution. Many people are good starters, but not so good a finisher. It take much more to finish than it does to start. What does it take to finish well? What does it look like to finish what we start? First we must not lose site of what we are doing. We are building something that is eternally important. We cannot lose site of why we started. We must keep the goal in focus. In any undertaking, we will encounter obstacles. In order to finish, we must not allow these obstacles to derail us. We cannot become distracted with secondary things and lose sight of the main thing. Finally we must never allow the cost of building to cause us to shortcut our efforts to build. Too many people set out to live for God and then think that it costs too much. Life is costly not matter what. The right kind of life is worth every cost, every bit of energy and every setback that we encounter. We must be committed to finishing what we start.
Starting a new thing is exciting. But some of us quickly lose our initial enthusiasm. We’ll discuss how to see things through to the end. What does make you stick with something? Sometimes it’s the time and money you invested in it. Sometimes it’s because there are already so many tombstones in your idea graveyard and you can’t stand the thought of adding another.
