Welcome to the MAKES SENSE podcast, where we apply the science, art and philosophy of sense making to the things that make you go Hmmm? Those most pressing thoughts and discussions going on in our minds today. The Makes Sense Podcast is an expense free service with the intention of helping you execute on the concept of changing the way you look at things, so that the things you look at begin to change.  Today we'll MAKE SENSE of GROWTH - To seek or not to seek? That is the question. The intention of this episode is to arm and equip you with the basic understanding of the challenges we face as humans to grow and acquire our goals and dreams. We will also provide easy to follow action steps and strategies to begin leveraging a better life experience for you and those you love. Contact: Dr. JC Doornick - https://zez.am/makessense SHOW NOTES: A great next discussion and next step after last week's episode on brain awareness perception and learning about our amazing sense making machines. Why is this topic relevant as a logical next step? Well, once we awaken to how our sense making machine works and begin to identify the things that hold us back? We can decide at any time that we will begin the process of reclaiming control as the shot callers in our lives? There is a crucial next step. This being making a quality decision to go after something, no matter what?  No matter what? Why is this important? To characterize and label your decisions to do something or go somewhere no matter what? Because it's not an easy thing to take a made up mind and request it move in a different way. I like to use an analogy of an oil tanker. An oil tanker ship weighs somewhere between 80,000 and 120,000 deadweight tons and steam ahead at a clip of about 20-25 mph. Imagine what it would take to turn that sucker around in the other direction? It would take some time, no? Lets just say that would be an easy and doable task compared to that of turning the oil tanker in your cranial vault. Why? Well imagine if you go to the captain of the ship and make a request to change course and he says “No!” and further explains that the course he has selected is the course that he has taken successfully for the past 30 years. It is the safest and most effective course and he refuses to allow anything else. Now you have another step before you even begin the process of the course correction. You now have to somehow convince the captain to even consider the change against his will. He's very dedicated to his job and takes pride in his 30 year record of getting his ship there on time. Who is the captain in your mind? Your ego, and it has every intention of staying the course. Your ego is not your enemy. It's your employee and it is extremely dedicated to you and what you've taught it to do over all these years. Not to mention the fact that you have also taught your ego to not listen to you when you come up with a new idea that contradicts one of the core principles it has been trained to protect. So when you do make a request for change, your ego knows you are just kidding. Silly Rabbit, Trix are for kids. Remember that commercial where the rabbit tries to cross the word Kids out on the Trix cereal box and replace it with Rabbit? The kids represent your ego and laugh at the rabbit saying. Silly Rabbit, trix are for kids. Let's talk about this for a bit. What does it mean to make a decision to move in a different direction? Well for one thing it involves risk. What's the risk? When we set our eyes on something we desire that sits in a new place, different from our day to day schedule or regularly scheduled program, it comes with the risk that we may be making the wrong decision. Or that we might fail? Or perhaps that we might succeed and not be able to handle it? However, due to the fact that as humans, we possess one quality that makes us unique amongst most other life forms. As a species, we have been both blessed and cursed with the fact that we know we are gonna die. This brings up a whole different discussion that we will unpack and make sense of in episode six of this podcast where we discuss death and dying. It is actually a fun concept to have and will help you resolve a lot of concepts most people have and allow them to get on with living rather than worry about dying. However, for the case of this episode, because we know we have a limited and unknown resource of time here, it makes the decision to take risks, well lets say risky. But then we somehow shift. We all have the potential to flip the script and reframe any narrative to validate taking that risk. Why is this important? To learn how to move into a place where you are up for the challenge if taking risks? Well first. Risk, discomfort and inconveniently hard work is required for growth. If that's what you seek. Second, there is potentially an even greater risk on the other side of this risk we are contemplating. That being the decision to not take risks. What's the risk of not pushing forward into the sucky nature of the uncomfortable unknown? It carries a 100% percent guarantee of “no growth”. Without risk, without facing fears, accepting challenges and doing hard things, there is no growth.  As I always say, “isn't it mysterious how the universe and god have placed everything we desire in life, inconveniently on the other side of a big pile of shit? So what does this mean? It means we must become shit navigators if we want to grow and win. We must learn to move through it, under it, over it or around it. In fact we must often come to realize the shit isn't even real and only a figment of imagination and mirage that was created by our programmed minds. I contend that there is a version of you that not only has the ability to navigate through the suck, but one that has no second thought to it and one that almost enjoys it because you are connected more so with what's on the other side of the challenge rather than focused on the challenge. This is an important awakening and power move to make before we go any further in this series. Important because we are gonna discuss some wonderful breakthroughs that can place you in the fast lane towards your dream life. But they will require action beyond the breakthrough. To move from the jacuzzi experience of learning and acknowledging the breakthrough to that pivotal experience where you actually take action. Remember this. Learning is nothing more than a distraction, in the absence of action. Wanna know the secret? The secret to making these hard decisions and taking radical action and accepting the risk with no second guessing or doubt and no quit and 100% follow through? Let's shift our consciousness. I call this example THE AIR Come with me for a few minutes here. Lets envision that you and I were in a pool and all of a sudden i take your head and push it under water. Feeling that I mean business, at that moment, what is your goal and greatest desire? AIR. To breathe right? So you make an attempt to wiggle free but then realize that i am really strong and you can't break free? Does your urgency for the air get bigger or smaller? Bigger right? What are you now willing to do to break free and get that AIR? Anything and everything at the risk of dying. In this scenario, did you even for a second think about the risks associated with trying hard? Or did you second guess yourself and ponder whether this was the right time, or whether you were the right person for the job? Did you have any concerns that you would waste your time trying and contemplate just rolling over and dying? NO! Why use this example? Because you just flipped a switch and reframed the narrative of the shit that sits in between you and everything you desire in life. Its not the challenge, the hard work or your motivation, self belief or timing that gets you there. It's what's on the other side that determines whether or not you will engage in the work and follow through. So before we move on to the next episodes where we make sense of potential breakthroughs and strategies to become the dominant creator of your reality, I recommend you start getting to know what you actually want in life and why you want it. If it is as important to you as the AIR when your head is under water? Then you need no assistance in how to get it, only some concepts and tools to make it not easy but easier. Other wise, this podcast and the awesome stuff coming your way will just help you create the illusion that you are growing by simply knowing more stuff. One of my great mentors, Dan Bell always reminded me of the 11th commandment. Did you know there were 11 commandments? It reads like this. Thou shall not kid thyself.  Welcome to the dance floor and arena of play friends. Remember, if you learned something today, give it away. That's how it will stay. I want to hear your voice and amplify what you're doing. We have the opportunity to shift the narrative internally and create a culture of trust, where everyone's opinions are valued and heard. - Tim Dyck There is so much to celebrate when you get a promotion that it is easy to overlook one big transition; shifting from peer to a trusted supervisor. When accept that promotion start thinking of strategies for transitioning from a peer to a supervisor role. As much as you may hope your collegial relationships will stay the same, there will be some changes. What will you do you do when team members start challenging your authority? Katie and I have a great conversation navigating the complexities of transitioning to a leadership role and the unexpected obstacles that come with it. There are several ways that I have found to be helpful when navigating this challenging shift. One thing that I can never emphasize enough is ongoing, clear, and open communication. That includes recognizing the importance of addressing the changing relationships with peers directly. Scheduling one-on-one meetings with each team member will give an opportunity to have open and transparent conversations. Use that time to acknowledge the new responsibilities while expressing a commitment to support and help individuals in their professional development. The goal is not to assert authority or power. Another key to building trust when shifting from peer to supervisor is asking questions and actively listening to the perspectives of team members. By asking about their roles, achievements, and areas for improvement, leaders can show genuine interest and value their input. An event better way to build trust than listening is following through on feedback. This demonstrates that their opinions matter by implementing changes whenever appropriate., If you're currently transitioning into a supervisor role, this conversation is a goldmine of practical strategies and tips to help you navigate this process successfully. By learning the importance of clear communication, active listening, and follow-through, you can build trust and create a positive work culture within your team. Part Three: How To Follow Through With Boundaries Setting boundaries and following through to ensure your family and friends respect them can take a lot of time and communication to work. It also calls for a lot of patience, understanding, and maturity to straighten things up. People we love and care about will step into our boundaries from time to time. But gently restoring them to the right place will help us set a positive tone and a safe space for communication. Without communication, we are likely to build resentment and anger, which can result in anger and relationship breakdown. Spending time with God and staying rooted in the word can help us communicate with others with self-control, gentleness, kindness, patience, and love to build healthy relationships.   Join today's Therapy Thursday conversation with me, Lisa, and my friend Lidia Martinez as we talk about setting boundaries, what the scripture says, and how to follow through after setting boundaries to get the people you love to respect them to build strong and healthy relationships.  Tune in!   In This Episode, You Will Learn About:  [00:00] Introduction to the show  [00:26] Today's focus: Part 3; Following Through WithBoundaries [01:25] Why communication matters in setting boundaries  [04:16] Being assertive and getting back at someone at theright time [05:59] How Jesus lays out the boundaries in the scripture  [07:32] Peter and why he is a great example to look at when setting boundaries  [08:52] Keeping short accounts when building healthy relationships  [11:36] How to set a positive tone and create a safe space in your marriage  [13:29] Gently restoring people who step into our boundaries  [16:44] Galatians 6:1-10; the scriptural blueprint on how to correct others  [21:02] How to restore relationships when it involves your children  [24:11] Practicing undeserved forgiveness in difficult situations  [25:50] Don't be like a door; find your strength and let go  [27:53] Getting help from a Christian counselor in your journey  [30:27] Practicing compassion and empathy with other people  [31:45] Quick recap and key nuggets from the show  [34:03] Lessons from a story on how kindness can change your relationship  [35:57] Using the fruits of the Holy Spirit as tools to communicate with others [37:20] Seeking professional help and Dr. Lidia four free session  [38:50] Ending the show with a word of prayer       Notable Quotes:  ● When a seed of hurt and anger in a relationship is fed, it turns to hatred  ● We cannot be led by our emotions, they are fleeting, and they come and go; we need to have a strong foundation in Christ. ● Forgiveness is not about the other person; it's about you, opening and softening up your heart to have better relationships.  ● Healing does not mean that the damage never existed; it means the damage no longer controls your life.  ● You never know how strong you are until you forgive somebody who was never sorry and accepts an apology you will never receive ● Allowing hurt in your heart is expressing unforgiveness, so let it go.    Follow Faith with Friends on Website: https://faith-with-friends.captivate.fm/ (https://faith-with-friends.captivate.fm/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/faithwithfriends_podcast/ (https://www.instagram.com/faithwithfriends_podcast/)   Let's Connect! Kristen Mortensen became the first female president of the Salt Lake Home Builders Association shortly before the housing crash in 2008. Now, she's a partner in Goldcrest Homes and is coming up on having worked on 1000 homes. Goldcrest Homes has a passion for building with women in mind, as women are driving 80% of home sales and are typically managing the house day-to-day. In this episode, she talks about her experience as a woman in a male-dominated industry and Goldcrest Homes' showcase for the Parade of Homes. A Nest With Surprises The Goldcrest Homes' showcase for the Parade of Homes is called "The Lofty Nest." Kristen describes it as a comfortable, fun house, a nest with some surprises.' The two-story house has high ceilings, a loft study area, and an ordinance-compliant accessory dwelling unit in the basement, which allows leasing of the bottom one-bedroom apartment, a highly sought-after feature. Listen in to learn more about Goldcrest Homes, their current and upcoming communities in Utah, and more features of "The Lofty Nest." Following Through as a Contractor in Utah Kristen was always intrigued by the home-building process and inquired about how to enter the industry in college. She was encouraged to become a teacher, which she did until she had an opportunity to finish a house. Kristen found out there was no magic to the process; it took hard work, following through, and planning. Kristen recounts that she never felt intimidated as a woman in general contracting and that the tradespeople she's worked with over the years have been welcoming. She knows a little about many things, having learned from plumbers, electricians, roofers, and more. She's glad to see that women can now go to school for construction management and that more women are finding careers in construction. Utah Building With Women in Mind Goldcrest Homes' goal is to help "build a lovely nest for your flock." The company has a passion for building with women in mind, as statistics show that women drive 80% of home sales. Typically, women are more concerned with family planning, upgrading, and house management. As a company, they pay attention to a home's exterior curb appeal and practical interior use. Building a place that is functional as well as attractive is one of Goldcrest's top qualities. The post The Lofty Nest | Salt Lake Parade of Homes appeared first on Utah Real Estate Podcast.

This is a rerun of the best of the best from the Untapped Podcast. The original episode show notes are here: https://nataliesisson.com/016Given we all have 24 hours in a day, I'm constantly surprised by how many people squander that precious time and waste it on things they know they shouldn't be doing.I see this all the time with my friends, loved ones and my peers, and do my best to share my knowledge on habits, time management and tools to help them. Most of the time they end up resenting where their time went and what they didn't achieve. So how can you avoid this?Well, you can start by listening to this podcast episode where I divulge the 6 Rules to Finishing What You Start.I've read my fair share of books and one of the most inspiring is Peter Hollin's “Finish What You Start”. In this book, he shares his lifelong curiosity around how we manage our time and also why we don't finish the things that we start. He then goes into a plethora of practical ways to reclaim our time and actually get things done! One of the methods he suggests, that I found to be a real eye-opener, is creating a manifesto. A manifesto, in his words, is nothing more than a set of rules to follow everyday.By having this manifesto as your guiding principle, you immediately place a value on your time and activities that makes you prioritize what's important, and it acts as a guiding star for any new projects you may want to start, and to avoid any distractions that will inevitably come your way.He also shares 6 rules to finishing what you start, and I divulge these on this podcast episode, but in a nutshell they are:Rule 1: Are you acting out of laziness? If so, is this a characterization you want about yourself?Rule 2: Three major tasks a day, maximum.Rule 3: Create daily limitations and requirements for yourself.Rule 4: Reaffirm your intentions by stating “I want,” “I will,” and “I won't” statements.Rule 5: Try to look into the future, 10 minutes, hours, and days at a time. Do you like what you see when you consider not following through?Rule 6: It's just 10 minutes, right? So if you want to quit, it's just 10 minutes. And if you need to wait, it's just 10 minutes.I go into more detail on what each of these rules means and how to apply them and also share How to write a manifestoHow to reaffirm your intentionsResourcesRead this book by Peter Hollins – Finish What You Start: The Art of Following Through, Taking Action, Executing, & Self-Discipline Read this book by Chris Guillebeau – The Art of Non-ConformityLifePilot – my system and methodology for turning your dreams into reality that lets you map out your life and goals each quarter, month, week and every day. Today we are going to talk about the one character trait that will change your whole f*cking life. And I'm not exaggerating here. It truly is going to change your life if you can understand it and implement it immediately. So, I was going for a walk this morning and I was thinking about this idea of “Following Through.” I am a fitness competitor entering my sixth show. The reason this show was so important to me and the reason I was so excited to do it is I've actually had to drop out of my last two shows. I got injured before the first one. And the pandemic shut down the second one. So coming into this show I was experiencing a lot of internal resistance because I felt like a failure. Because previously I said I was going to do something, and I didn't end up doing it. It reminded me of back in the day when I would commit to something and then drop out.  I used to be the guy who would tell my friends I'd hang out with them fully knowing that I was going to bail. I used to be the guy who would commit to going to a family gathering and then make an excuse for not showing up because I didn't want to be there. I used to be the person who would say I was going to do something, and then I wouldn't do it. What this did to me was create an internal sense of loneliness and self-loathing.  (Listen to episode #522 and learn more!) I've Been There. I've Done That. Now Learn with Me. I know all the ins and outs of online fitness coaching. I've made mistakes and I've had successes. But I've never given up. That's how I was able to open my own gym and start an online coaching business that has not only brought me success, but also benefited over 600 other online fitness coaches. I love to share my knowledge. So, when you work with me, you learn with me. I'm ready to help you shed those 9-5 shackles and enjoy the freedom, satisfaction, and yes, money, you'll get from being an online fitness coach. Listen to discover the answers and other fascinating Christmas intel? (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/50-things-yule-never-know-653613) We all have the best of intentions. A true guide for procrastinators, slackers, couch potatoes, and those who get what they want right now, instead of what they want the most. Want to get somewhere worth going? It's not going to be easy, and it's not going to be comfortable. So, now what? This book gives you the missing key to all that you want in life. Practical Self-Discipline is exactly what the title promises: PRACTICAL. You will gain scientifically-proven new perspectives and tips to manage your day, energy, motivation, and self-discipline. In doing so, you will also deeply learn about your brain and what it is that drives you on a biological basis. You'll learn how to deal with the tangled, contradictory mess that is the human psyche, and use it to your advantage for once! Unlock the secrets of how top performers consistently exercise self-discipline. It can be frustrating to glide through life not competing things, or leaving things unfinished. It can be painful, even. But now, discover how to practically implement self-discipline into your life - mostly painlessly - and become a master finisher. Overcome the barriers that actually lead to "laziness". Peter Hollins has studied psychology and peak human performance for over a dozen years and is a bestselling author. He has worked with dozens of individuals to unlock their potential and path towards success. His writing draws on his academic, coaching, and research experience. Adjust your psychology to master discomfort and master your impulses. •3 simple formulas for getting things done and evaluating yourself. •A timebox, an unschedule, and a calendar: what they can do for you. •Construct the most helpful to-do list that will also motivate you and organize your life. •Why you should actually read less, read Homer's Odysseus, and slice your life into categories. Daily self-discipline will fundamentally change your life. A goal without the self-discipline necessary to enact it will remain just a dream or fantasy. Does this describe you more often than not? Reasons Why Facebook Will Reject an Ad Facebook Ads Not Delivering Reason #1: If your ad has been rejected, there are a lot of reasons why that may be. Here are the most common ones. The ad features or promotes tobacco, drugs and drug-related products (including pharmaceuticals) The ad promotes unreliable and/or unsafe diet supplements (what qualifies as unreliable and unsafe is unfortunately up to Facebook and their discretion) The ad is selling weapons, ammunition, and explosives The ad features sensational, excessively violent content The ad promises counterfeit or fake documents, such as degrees, passports, or immigration papers Malware and spyware, surveillance equipment (spy cams and cell phone trackers, for example) can be found in the ad The ad uses unlikely or exaggerated “before-and-after” images to promote weight loss (ads for health and weight loss products must be targeted to people over 18 years old) The ad features “Adult Content” Unrealistic claims or get ‘get rich quick’ schemes What You Can Do To Fix It Make the requested changes For example, if Facebook cited your graphic as being inappropriate, simply change the image out to one that fits their standards. Once you’ve made your changes and saved the ad, it will automatically be resubmitted to Facebook for further review and (hopefully) approval. Appeal the disapproval Everyone makes mistakes, especially Facebook. So if you feel that your ad has been unfrairly disapproved, you can always submit an appeal through Facebook. Facebook Ads Not Delivering Reason #2: Your Image Violates the 20% Rule When it comes to advertising on Facebook, there are a lot of rules; some of them are written down and many more are not. Among these hundreds of written and unwritten rules; one of the most forgettable, yet vitally important ones, is the 20% Text Rule. What is the 20% Text Rule? Well, according to Facebook standards, the images in your ads cannot exceed an image to text ratio of 20% – this includes logos, slogans, watermarks, and any other text that may be on your image. To put it another way, you can’t have an image for your ad that’s a giant wall of text. If your image is deemed OK, that means you have the right amount of text and your reach will not be restricted. Image Text Check Upload an image to determine how much text is in your ad image. If the proportion of text to image is too high, your ad may not reach its full audience. Facebook Says: We make exceptions for certain kinds of products being advertised.https://www.facebook.com/ads/tools/text_overlay  Facebook Ads Not Delivering Reason #3: Your Ad Is Stuck In Review As we mentioned above, each ad is reviewed by Facebook’s team to verify that it meets the advertising Terms of Service. This process is handled by a combination of Facebook’s automated review systems and manual reviews done by members of their support staff. If we check Facebook’s documentation, they state that most ads are reviewed in 24-hours, “although in some cases it may take longer.” This means that your ads can get stuck in the review process for longer than that time frame (especially in Q4 when ad load is high). What You Can Do To Fix It As Facebook mentions, an easy way to prevent this from interfering with your deadlines is to schedule the ad as far in advance as you can. This gives you a few days grace in case your ad needs to be sent to Facebook’s team for manual approval. You can schedule your campaign in advance by selecting the specific start and end date during campaign creation. Facebook Ads Not Delivering Reason #4: Your Ad Is Stuck In Review As we mentioned above, each ad is reviewed by Facebook’s team to verify that it meets the advertising Terms of Service. This process is handled by a combination of Facebook’s automated review systems and manual reviews done by members of their support staff. If we check Facebook’s documentation, they state that *most* ads are reviewed in 24-hours, “although in some cases it may take longer.” This means that your ads can get stuck in the review process for longer than that time frame (especially in Q4 when ad load is high). In addition, do not edit your ads until the approval has gone through since edits start the review process over again. Facebook Ads Not Delivering Reason #5: Your Ad Is Low Quality In an effort to stop spammy and ‘clickbait’ ads, Facebook has started to disapprove and reduce the reach of ads they deem as low quality. They’ve separated these low-quality types of ads into 3 main categories: Engagement Bait, Withholding Information, and Sensationalized Language. Engagement Bait We’ve all seen ads that ask for people to ‘like and tag your friend’ for one reason or another. What you might not know is that this is against Facebook policy, and can impact the delivery of your ads. Facebook defines these as “Ads with spammy content asking people to engage with it in specific ways, such as requesting likes, comments, and shares” as in the example below. Withholding Information You might have seen headlines like, “This ONE WEIRD TRICK cures cancer – doctors hate it!” which indicates that you won’t find out what the weird trick is until you clicked. This is considered withholding information and will also reduce delivery, or get you out-right disapproved. Sensationalist language  Facebook states that sensationalist language is “Ads that use exaggerated headlines or command a reaction from people but don’t deliver on the landing page”. If you’re claiming that Prunes are THE MOST POWERFUL weight loss hack KNOWN TO MAN!!!!!!, chances are you’re going to get reduced delivery. Facebook also goes on to state that we should expect the following about low-quality ads: Individual ads with low-quality attributes will see reduced distribution in our ad auction, or will be disapproved. This applies to all advertisers, but since we tend to see more of these characteristics in ads related to media, entertainment, politics or issues of national importance, they may be impacted more. If you’re in one of the categories above, be careful to give your copy extra scrutiny before publication. What You Can Do To Fix It The answer to this is very simple: Avoid any and all of the language! Resources Mentioned In Today's Episode: SmarterQueue is the best social media content scheduler I have come across.  Doing It! (Show notes: huntingthemuse.com/podcast/5) Welcome to HuntingTheMuse.com's Creative Writing Podcast.  If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element. Today's podcast episode is about doing it!Setting goals.Following ThroughFighting for the dreams that are important to you. This week was tough, but despite all the roadblocks, the hiccups, and the distractions... I was Doing It!Not subscribed to the podcast? Get it now!Writing UpdatesChlorophyllium 9 is coming along nicely. I've already written over 6,000 words in my expansion of the story since I unpublished it. The characters are starting to grow and I feel like they have a lot more dimension to them. I've been working in Scrivener and being able to select alternating chapters and read them back to back has been invaluable! I love that I can quickly see if my cliff hangers are paying out and if my pinches and pulls are doing their jobs. So far, I'm very satisfied with how everything is coming together.Greg's thread (my primary MC) is almost done and then I will be moving to polish up Julia's thread. I'm really excited to see the story go back up on the market, but I've learned a lot of things on the road to where I am right now. I'm definitely going to be sticking with Kindle Unlimited for a while. I just don't have the following or enough of a mature series to support going wide. I think I really liked the idea of it, but seeing what that move did to my short story sales is enough to convince me that I need to build a strong foundation before branching out.I will also definitely be waiting until Final Hope is complete before I release Chlorophyllium 9. I've already covered this to a degree in previous episodes, but it just makes sense to finalize the whole novel before I release the novella. I'm not going to make that mistake again.I might even delay publishing Chlorophyllium 9, then Final Hope, until I have at least a strong foundation for the next novel in the series. This isn't a big stretch as I have that novel partially outlined already and I know what purpose it will serve in the overarching series.I'll have to watch how things go as I get closer and modify my strategy accordingly. That's one of the great things about the shifting Indie culture and weighing what is working vs. what isn't. There are so many great voices to listen to and get input from. It truly is an amazing community to be a part of.A Tough WeekAs I mentioned earlier, it was a tough week for me. You see, we moved to the country about 2 years ago and we don't have a few of the conveniences we were used to back in Utah. One of those conveniences we gave up was access to a public sewer system. That's right, we have a septic tank, and this weekend things came to a head when I heard the burbley-gurbelies bubbling up in the lawn. I guess the sprinklers stopped working and the last tank in the system had filled up with water that would normally be pumped out into the field. Yikes!Afraid that we might get some back-flow into the house, I tried my best to get things working again. I attempted to siphon off water out of the tank, I tried messing with the electrical breaker. No dice. I really hoped it wasn't the septic pump.Yeah, it was the pump... $475 later, we once again have a working septic system. But, as luck would have it, just a few hours after that issue was fixed, I got home and noticed that one side of the house was practically boiling. It seemed like one of the A/C units wasn't working.I went outside to take a look and there were several bites in the thermostat control wire leading into the unit. What could possibly do such a thing? Bunnies... Yeah, those crazy North-Central Texas rabbits do some crazy stuff. So, determined to try to fix it myself and save some money, I headed to the hardware store for a spool of wire I could use to splice in. I picked up some electrical tape and some other doodads, (hey... I'm no electrician or plumber... what can I say?) and then got home and replaced the wiring. The unit tried to fire up, but it just wasn't turning the fan over. Sheesh! Defeated, I asked my wife to call an HVAC company to come out and take a look. $189 later, we once again have functioning A/C. I guess one of the capacitors had died and a second was on its way out. Can't a guy get a break?!I can't help but think how those two expenses could be at least two professional-looking covers for books. Or maybe a round of edits. It's tough. But this is just part of owning a house and I'm not the only one to get slammed out of the blue with one issue after another... But, despite all the trouble and the frustration this last week brought, I still managed to meet my writing goal. That's huge! There was ample opportunity, from the moment I discovered the septic was having issues, to toss out an excuse and give up.I've also been playing with the Mac Mini I bought a few months back when I saw a really good deal on eBay. I've used a Mac for work in the past and I never bothered to play with any of the creative features it included. I mean, it was a work machine and I worked the dickens out of it... But I've really been enjoying messing around with it and I even turned off my Windows tower for the entire weekend. That's why I've got new podcast intro and outro music tracks!I also had the opportunity to work on a creative project with my wife, Tara, and it was an awesome experience. We've been dealing with a fair amount of stress for a while now. I'll be honest, this move has been tough on us at times. But sitting down and working on this project was amazing. We talked and laughed and worked together to create something. It's funny how things that take some effort can actually recharge your batteries far more than sitting and trying to relax after a long, hard day.Podcast NewsOf course, I mentioned the new Intro and Outro music tracks I created, but I'm already thinking the out track might be a little long and info-heavy. I tried to include information on how to contact me and interact with the podcast community as it grows. I know I don't have a big following yet, but I guess I was trying to anticipate a future need. I think it might be best to record several similar-sounding out-tracks and then alternate them from week to week. One week you might be encouraged to hit me up on Twitter, while another week might be a plug to join the Facebook group. It's just a thought for now, so let me know what you think.I also set up the Patreon page I mentioned last week. I know, I know... I said I didn't have time. But then I thought about it and I wanted to make sure noone took patreon.com/huntingthemuse. Okay, yeah, that's probably silly... I just didn't want to be that guy. I honestly just put it out there for a part of the journey I'm hoping this podcast takes. I didn't mention the financial hardships we encountered this week in any way to garner sympathy or push supporting the podcast. I hope you believe me! Setting up the Patreon page was just something I did earlier in the week and I was rather proud of doing it.There's still so much I don't know when it comes to Patreon. I mean, I need to figure out what kind of content, incentives, and bonuses I could create to reward the donation tiers. So, yeah, this isn't a push for you to donate money. (I know what the outtro says, but that was just me trying to create an episode feel that sounds the same now as it will in the future when I have several more episodes under my belt. Okay, I'll leave that dead horse alone for now.)Doing It.Are you doing it?Turning dreams into reality is hard work.Yes, it can be harder for some than it seems like it is for others, but we have to stop comparing. The truth is, we don't know the entire story. And even for those to whom success seems to come so easily, perhaps we don't see the agony they face when they try to duplicate that selfsame success. It isn't about how easy or hard the journey is. It's about putting one foot in front of the other. It's about moving forward, even when you don't feel like it. It's about learning from your mistakes and redoubling your effort.Goals vs. DreamsI came across a great post written by Hugh Howey (a well-known Indie author) in 2014. It's all about the difference between goals and dreams and he does a bit of introspection with his own success. It's just the sort of navel-gazing post that I think a lot of writers would benefit from reading; because Hugh has been there and he's done it. It took a lot of hard work and sometimes you need to examine that road and keep a level head about it.You see, goals require work, but they can help you achieve your dreams. Some dreams require more than just goal fulfillment, though. They require outside interaction. For example, your goal might be to write 10 books in the next 10 years. Your dream might be that you will be able to retire rich, write when you want to, and have the love and adoration of fans worldwide. You can do the work, but realizing the dream requires many things that are out of your control. How well do fans connect with your writing?Despite your best efforts, are potential readers finding your books? What market constraints are you up against? An example for those of you who aren't interested in pursuing a writing career:Are you wanting to capture your family's stories? You might have a timeline requirement.Aging family members. It can be hard to track down old records, etc.How do you take control of your desire to write? What goals can you make to help you achieve the outcome you desire?Do you make time for your writing hobby, or do you dream of writing... someday?Do you only dream about finding the quiet and solitude you need in order to sit down and write?Following Through “I have made up my mind. I will strive to finish my novel and submit it to publishers or agents within the year. I must dedicate myself as I have never before - this means that I must ultimately face my many insecurities… It is true that my story may not succeed in being the Great American Novel, or even find itself on a single bestsellers list.” --R. Brady Frost, A journal entry August, 2003.It's 2016. That journal entry was written 13 years ago... What happened?I failed to follow through. Failing to follow through equates to empty dreams...I was in the active duty military when I wrote that journal entry and I had a lot on my plate. While the military took its pound of flesh, I was also working my way through a full-time course load for my bachelor's degree. As time wore on, my passion for the project died.I look back now and I see the project for what it was, a juvenile endeavor, and it probably wouldn't have done well, but finishing would have been a huge start. By not following through, I set myself on a downward spiral where I lost faith in my abilities and gave up on my passion. The military was both very great and very hard on me in different ways. Things didn't necessarily get any easier for me when I got out of the service like I thought they would. In some ways, they got harder as I had to face things that I'd long pushed under the rug.Excuses are the enemy of follow-through.I'm not going to get overly deep into my personal hardships or distractions because there's only one thing you need to know. Excuses are the enemy of follow-through. Follow-through is required to meet your writing goals. It's very seldom that your dreams will come true if you don't have a healthy relationship between your goals and your ability to work towards them. Don't count on your fairy godmother. You have to fight for the dreams that are important. While things might not always be under your direct control, you usually do have a significant level of influence on how they turn out. You have to keep trying. Keep reaching for those dreams.Hedging Your Expectations...It also helps to keep your dreams somewhat realistic. You can dream of winning the lottery, but (generally) short of investing more money than you'll feasibly stand to gain, your odds are not very good. It's still fun to play sometimes, but your expectations have to be in line with reality. In the end, what matters most is...Are you DOING IT?Are your day-to-day actions in line with your goals and dreams? If you need to make a change, what can you do to help reinforce your efforts? When it comes to writing and creating art, there is very little use in guilt or shame in having failed in the past. Look, that journal entry from thirteen years ago is a constant reminder of my past failures, of how sure I was of being able to finish a project and latch onto a writing career. I knew that immediate success probably wasn't going to happen but, even knowing that, I failed to finish my project. I can't allow that to hold me down. I can't let a failure in the past dictate the rest of my journey. It's important to get back on your feet and keep pressing forward. Keep creating. Keep telling the stories that only you can tell. And now, for this week's writing prompts. What you'll find below is a series of creative writing prompts to help get you through your week. There are no rules as to how you should use them, but I recommend taking your muse's hand; wherever she may lead you. Whether you find yourself writing a descriptive scene or dialogue, a poem or prose, or anything else (even if it seems entirely unrelated to the prompt), you have won. Happy writing, and may you find success in hunting your muse this week.  1. The Steamsmith's ApprenticeYou’ve been working on your mechanical wings for months, but when your test flight doesn’t go as planned, you crash into an attractive bystander. You notice right away how kind their eyes look as they help you to your feet. When they proceed to gather the scattered parts of your contraption, doing more harm than good with their clumsy hands, you decide to let them help as best they can. After all, chances are you’ll have to start from scratch anyway.2. Save the ChildOn August 9th, 1945, the second of two atomic bombs strikes Japan. This time the target is set on Nagasaki, a ship-building town where an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 people will die at around 11:02 AM. In a horrifying race against the clock, you’ve been sent back in time to save just one of them, a small child who holds the genetic key that will unlock a cure to the disease that threatens to consume us all.3. The Road to NowhereIn Alaska there once existed plans to build a bridge. It was a very expensive bridge ($398 million by some estimates), one that would connect the town of Ketchikan to a small airport on the island of Gravina. When federal funds were shifted to natural disaster relief, the bridge project fell through. Or did it? With funds already allocated to road construction, crews worked to build the road. Now the Road to Nowhere ends where the bridge to Gravina would have once begun. Though, it is often said that if you stand at the edge of that vacant road in the dead of night and stare out into the fog and mist, you can hear the sounds of traffic.4. Just a Touch of CyberpunkIn his book, Neuromancer (1984), William Gibson coined the term, “cyberspace.” (Though he also used it, to lesser fanfare, in a 1982 short story, “Burning Chrome.”) Since then, the magic of computers and the notion of an interconnected grid has lost much of its luster. For many of us, it has become the expected norm. Think of something you do on the computer, your smartphone, or any other electronic device as a part of your normal day-to-day activities. Now take that action and make it magical by adding a touch of cyberpunk. How will you visualize traveling the information superhighway? Will you get entangled in the sticky web of Social Media? What is it like to encapsulate how very integrated into the system we’ve all become?5. A Modern TribeTake a look at the world from where you are in this moment. Do you see convenience and excess? Now imagine the infrastructure crumbling around you. Something has happened, be it natural disaster, man-made pandemic, meteorite impact, or something else. All you have is a group of your most trusted friends and family members. All you know is that you’ve got to get out of the city with your tribe as fast as you can. Take us through that tribulation.6. The Magic TouchHave you ever felt an unexpected spark of magic in a touch? After a man in a shabby trench coat stumbles into you on the street before disappearing into the crowd, you can’t help but feel… different. Now it seems that every time you make physical contact with someone, they instantly feel connected to you on some intimate, trusting level. How do you use this new power? Give us a try-fail cycle (An instance when your best intentions don’t work out the way you hoped they would.) on your way to mastering your new ability.7. A Shoebox in the AtticYou’re cleaning out the clutter in your attic when you find an old shoebox. By the layers of dust, you imagine it’s been tucked into the shadows of the remote corner for decades. You carefully pull it into the light and open the cover. What you see surprises you. Following Through might be a term we've borrowed from sports, but it's vital to supporting children in their development. It could be viewed as how we help children learn all the non-academics in the classroom. Young children are following their development, sometimes impulsively, and if something is important enough for me to stop that inner voice to change a behavior, help a child, enforce a routine, it's important enough for me to Follow Through.
