The gap between what an Ibis is made for and what it does in the city becomes very apparent once you see it in its natural habitat. The Ibis is made to roam marshlands and use their elegant bills to dig for crayfish and mussels - not for scraps of rubbish in bins. But like these birds, we also often lose sight of the type of world we are made for and how we are meant to be. We can't find the answer to who we are meant to be by looking within ourselves, but we can find it in God.‘Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love' the Psalmist writes in Psalm 51. ‘Cleanse me with hyssop, and I shall be clean … create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.'

When people first arrive in Australia, one of the first locals they are likely to meet is the “Bin Chicken”. So, I invited the expert on ‘Bin Chickens' to the show. John Martin became fascinated with the Ibis whilst studying “pest” species in Australia. And they are an incredibly interesting bird in urban ecology. In this episode, learn about the ‘Bin Chicken', how they came to be known as such, and their adaptability to new environments and experiences – just like a language learner. It is also an excellent opportunity to get involved in citizen science, which is a great way to reduce culture shock, and to acclimatise to a new environment. Over 200,000 copies of the game have been sold since its release in 2019. The game is currently rated as the 20th best game of all time on BoardGameGeek's database of over 18,000 games. Brendan is looking forward to the Oceania expansion, which includes birds from the Australasian region, including the 'Bin Chicken' - the Australian Ibis, which picks up discarded cards ie 'from the bin'! Kate and Joel Temple are fantastic writers of books for younger children. They are the authors of, as they describe it, silly books for kids; some of them long, some of them short, some of them rhyming and others that don’t. They even have a book that’s an ode to that most fantastic of Australian birds. Of course it’s called Bin Chicken, so you know good people all round! The third in Kate and Jol’s Yours Trooly Alice Toolie series is The Battle of Book Week.In the Battle of Book Week Alice Toolie has secured the coveted title of library monitor and has some ingenious ideas for making it a spectacular event. But Jimmy simply won’t let her trample all over his borrowing rights and runs against her for library monitor status. Who will prevail and will it steal the thunder of the not particularly famous authors coming to visit the school?!The Alice Toolie series are epistolary novels paying homage to passing notes in class… is what I would say if I was a far too serious book reviewer type who cannot fathom being young.Alice and Jimmy write notes, scribble in books and generally cause havoc in the name of being the best in their primary school. These books are infused with a genuine love of books and reading. Alice and Jimmy are fighting with each other over borrowing books and how much (and how fast) they can read them. If you were a parent worried that your child was highly susceptible to taking on pop-culture tropes then give them this series and let them go to town! The novels are knowing and smart, while still being frenetic and fun. Kate and Jol know how to make fun of everything (including themselves) and that opens up a world of imagination all within the suburban classroom. We may not be getting dressed up in the same way for book parades (although as a side note Book Week is still on, it’s postponed to October) that may mean a little more spare time to read together and share books with the younger readers in your life!
BIN CHICKEN time. This stupid thing. It's a white plague doctor looking bird. We chat about both the American White Ibis and the Australian White Ibis. We answer questions like: Why do Australian's gotta say weird stuff all the time? Were Flora and Fauna once conjoined twins? What's the difference between an Australian and American white ibis? Why do they call the ibis a bin chicken? Are they sinners or not?

Fizzics Education is one of Australia's leading science outreach providers of interactive science workshops and shows. Each week we take a look back at the hottest yet coolest science stories. From the supersonic to the glacial, from down to earth to out of this world, and from the ancient world to the distant future, Fizzics TWIST has it covered. Hosted by Duncan Bell, Quill Darby, and the entire Fizzics team. https://www.fizzicseducation.com.au
It's World Hippo Day, and we're always up for a high-stakes round of Hungry Hungry Hippos... but we're still terrified by Henrietta from the New Zoo Revue. Meanwhile in this week's Chickens in the News, a weird bird known as the Bin Chicken emerges as a contender for Australia's Bird of the Year. (We assume Olivia Newton-John masterminded this whole operation.) And we also have a "What's in the Bag?" segment featuring a fine new item from our very own ESO Network! (Hint: It's time to reinstate the Flopcast Book Club.) And Los Angeles-area Doctor Who fans, beware! Our own Mayor of Chickentown will see you this week at Gallifrey One.
Should Brisbane’s Bin Chicken be bird of the year!
