Retour sur le rock opéra de FOREIGN : "The Symphonie Of The Wandering Jew". Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Brad Birzer. Brad is the Russell Amos Kirk Chair in American Studies and Professor of History at Hillsdale College. He is also the co-founder of and senior contributor at The Imaginative Conservative, and the author of a number of books, including Neil Peart: Cultural (Re)Percussions. Find him online at bradbirzer.com or @bradleybirzer on Twitter.Brad's Music Pick: YesWell, the buses outside don't add much weight to the story in our heads we began in our last episode of Political Beats, so we're thinking we should go and write a punchline; thus, welcome to part two of our discussion of the great progressive rock band Yes, wherein we discuss their career from 1974's Relayer onward to the present day. (Be forewarned -- we pick and choose after the debacle of Union (1991). Fondly remembered: Talk, Keys To Ascension, Magnification and Fly From Here. Not so fondly remembered: erm, Open Your Eyes.)I could offer more prelude than that, but this is one episode where the music will do vastly more explaining than any written exegesis; Yes bounced back after Tales from Topographic Oceans with an album even more abstruse and outwardly difficult, yet light years more compelling. From that point onward and despite countless personnel changes -- up to and including swapping the "Video Killed the Radio Star" guys straight into their band -- the group maintained its unique sound and creative voice throughout the second half of the Seventies in a series of albums that age like casked scotch. (Check out the vigorous defenses of Tormato and Drama ye shall find herein!) Then the group collapsed after a disastrous 1980 tour and seemed to be over . . . until a South African guitarist/vocalist/songwriter named Trevor Rabin entered the picture. All this and much, much more is covered on an episode of Political Beats that spans from the mid Seventies all the way to the late Eighties without once pausing for breath. Afterwards, we take a breather here and there, but for now? Tempus fugit, my friends, so you should click, because we're off to the races, going for the one.
Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller After a short break, Mark and I are back to consider what Geoff Downes was doing before being asked to rejoin Yes for the recording of Fly From Here, released in 2011, shortly before the Yes Music Podcast was established. We have been listening to the John Wetton album, Raised in Captivity which includes many prog rock heroes so listen out for our thoughts on that and what, if anything, we learned about why Geoff was re-recruited. Can we tell why Yes wanted Geoff Downes from this record? What do all those guests add? Is it a good record? Let us know if you agree with us! I received an amazing email this week - or was it last week I can't remember - informing me that Yes The Tormato Story has been shortlisted for a Selfie Award. These are handed out for self-published books so I think it has a lot more to do with the work Izzie Lawrence (cover designer), Bob Carling (production management and typesetting) and Simon Barrow (all round legend who kept me on track) had to do with it than me. It's also down to Mark, every Executive Producer, newsletter subscriber, pre-order-er, supporter, YMP listener, producer and patron and everyone else who had any role in its creation - see the full acknowledgements page in the book for more details. Anyway, I have to go to the London Book Fair in a couple of weeks' time to see if the book wins in the general non fiction category so keep your fingers crossed, please. https://youtu.be/8mfLQxwtwy8?si=_6Cm6fHMkoYFz5ir Check out the progress on my other podcast - https://anthem52.com/ Support the Fundraiser! Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller This week, Mark and I talked about the situation in Yes at the time Geoff Downes rejoined for Fly From Here - around 2010-11. It's a contentious time - but then again when isn't with Yes? Oliver Wakeman had to make way for the return of Downes who had worked very closely with Steve Howe in Asia for many years and, when Trevor Horn was brought in to produce the new album, perhaps the writing was on the wall for a Downes redux. All was not well between certain other members of the band either... Why did Geoff return (trip)? Whose idea was it? Why was Oliver Wakeman 'let go'? Episode 139 – Yes Part 21, From a Page The group returns to the late-model Yes catalog with From a Page. This release is a very welcome look back at the lineup-that-never-really-was. These tracks which were ultimately put aside for the sweeping (and wonderful) Fly From Here give us a glimpse of what the Oliver Wakeman, David, Howe, White, Squire configuration could have been. These tracks retain the hallmarks of Yes while showcasing a bit of Benoit David's range and demonstrating that Oliver has a deep understanding of what makes Yes music. Fly From Here DVD Produced by Wayne Hall, Jeffrey Crecelius and Preston Frazier This week Mark and I are delving deeply into a 5% for something topic so if you consider yourself a casual fan of the world's greatest progressive rock band you can either stick around and learn or save yourself a chunk of time by leaving now. I recommend you stay and become inducted into the mindset of the YMP enthusiasts. It's fun, or at least I've found it so for 10 years now. So assuming you are still with me, we will be diving into a comparison of two Yes albums, The Ladder and Fly From Here, based on our own, entirely arbitrary measures. Do let me know if you agree or disagree with our findings by commenting on the show notes for this week's episode or maybe opening your window and shouting for the world to hear - whichever you'd prefer. Geoff Downes work as a keyboardist, songwriter and producer has had him at the top of the progressive rock genre for over 40 years. Many know him as the founding member of the supergroup Asia, but his family tree also includes Yes and The Buggles. Music collaborations have also played a key role throughout Geoff's career. You'll find him on projects with the late John Wetton in Icon and Chris Braide in Downes Braide Association (DBA). Your multi-awarding winning host, Ray White went back stage in August of 2012 to talk with Geoff about Asia's XXX album and Yes' Fly From Here project. Geoff also talks about being in the two iconic progressive rock bands. His brand new release is DBA's Halcyon Hymns. Asia's self-titled album was the #1 album of 1982 according to Billboard and Cashbox. You can hear more from Geoff on Episode 025. The best in progressive rock, from your friends at Classic Artists Today!
Episode 54 – Yes Part 17, Fly From Here & Fly From Here, Return Trip Joe and Ken have an unabashed lovefest for both versions of the Fly From Here album. Thirty years in the making, Fly From Here is worth every day of the wait. The discussion focuses on the interesting amalgam found in these albums from songwriting, influences, production and singers. It’s not often you are able to fully enjoy two interpretations of the same album that do not, in any way, diminish the other. Both Benoit David and Trevor Horn get props for delivering vocals in their own manner. These albums see Yes seemingly operating as an energized, cohesive unit and the payoff if palpable. Both Fly From Here albums showcase all that is great about Yes music. Tormato! Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier Tormato, undeniably the greatest Yes album ;-) celebrated 40 years recently. So this week, Mark and I listen again to the much-maligned record to try and find out what everyone else seems to hate. We also dedicate our 2 pence to the 1978 'classic'. Was the production really that bad? Are there any aspects people who don't listen are missing out on? Are there any decent songs? Listen to the episode then let us know what you think! Mark's Tormato Friday Music Vinyl photos: DBA (Downes Braide Association) Perform Debut live show at Trading Boundaries on 28th Sept & Announce release of Remixed version of Suburban Ghosts DBA - Skyscraper Souls Geoff Downes and Chris Braide 26th September 2018: DBA (Downes Braide Association) perform their first ever live show at Trading Boundaries on Friday 28th September, with a special showcase for their latest album Skyscraper Souls. The evening is sponsored by Prog Magazine. DBA is the musical collaboration between the legendary Geoff Downes and Chris Braide who joined forces as the result of their close friendship and passion for music. Bass player Andy Hodge, who worked on the Skyscraper Souls album will be joining DBA on the night. Other guests at Trading Boundaries will include David Longdon (Big Big Train) and David Colquhoun (Francis Dunnery, Go West). Barney Ashton Bullock (poet, songwriter; Andy Bell; Marc Almond) will be doing the narrative on the night. DBA also announce the release of a remixed version of their critically acclaimed 2015 album Suburban Ghosts 2018 on 30th November. The album features new musicians and is remixed by Chris Braide and mastered by Mike Pietrini. Joining original band members Chris Braide (vocals, programming, piano, bass guitar, electric guitar, keyboards) and Geoff Downes – (programming, piano and keyboards) on the remix are: Patrick Howley - electric guitar, Dave Gregory - slide guitar, Lee Pomeroy - bass guitar, Andy Hodge - bass guitar and on Drums - Ash Soan. Wherever musical history is made, Geoff Downes is there. From the first video ever shown on MTV, The Buggles’ Video Killed the Radio Star, Geoff continues to gain acclaim and break musical ground. He is a founding member of Asia whose album of the same name was the biggest selling in the world in 1982. Together with vocalist/bassist, the late John Wetton, they propelled the band’s global success. With the legendary YES, Geoff joined for the critically acclaimed album ‘Drama’ in 1980 and then re-joined for ‘Fly From Here’ in 2011. He continues to tour with both YES and Asia. Christopher Braide is a multi-instrumentalist, Ivor Novello award-winning songwriter and producer who is based in Los Angeles. He is known for his outstanding work with Sia, Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Marc Almond, David Guetta and many more. GQ magazine named him one of the most successful and influential men in the music industry under 40, and he continues to work with A-listers on both sides of the Atlantic. DBA is a labour of love for both Downes and Braide and together they form a unique combination. They have produced three critically acclaimed albums with ‘Skyscraper Souls’ being their most ambitious yet, it features the talents not only of the principals but also guest stars Marc Almond, Kate Pierson (B-52s), Andy Partridge (XTC), Ash Soan (The Voice) and David Longdon (Big Big Train). Chris Braide states: “Working with Geoff on the Skyscraper Souls album and its two predecessors has reacquainted me with the kind of music I love. Epic and euphoric.

Featured in this episode of the show is our interview with three of the four members of Chicago's The Cyberiam. Comprised of (l. to r.) Tommy Murray on drums, Keith Semple on vocals and guitar, Brian Kovacs on bass, and Frank Lucas on keyboards, their self-titled debut album is now out, and with their respective groundings in genres within and beyond prog, it's a fully-formed recording that sounds more mature than most bands' first outings. You'll hear about the making of the album and a lot more besides. Plus, we hear from Yes expert and broadcaster/podcaster Roman Guzman with his and Mark's thoughts about the reissue (with new vocals) of the band's 2011 album Fly From Here. And there's a theme of nostalgia running through this show, with three tracks all dealing with that particular emotion in their own ways. Since we last covered them (way back in our second episode!) Haken has released an excellent EP called “Restoration”. In the beginning of this week's show the Squatch and Diamond Dave play some music from that EP. In the second part of the show, they put the spotlight on Canadian band Mystery which eventually featured Benoit David (who went on to front Yes during the “Fly From Here” era). This week they cover the first two Mystery releases, with the Benoit David era to follow at a later date. And finally, a great Watch List submission from an Eastern U.S. band called In The Presence Of Wolves from their recently released album “Thalassus”. If you like your Prog HEAVY you don't want to miss these guys! They rock! And don't forget: if you have a Prog band (or know someone who does) you could have your music featured on our Watch List! Send your submissions or links (with a short bio) to the Squatch via e-mail at bigsquatch@verizon.net, or post to the Prog-Watch Facebook page. Also, if you like what we are doing, give us a “like” on Facebook, or follow the Squatch on Twitter @ProgSquatch.
