Snowfall in Israel is a common sight during the months of January and February, especially on Mount Hermon. In fact, Mount Hermon Ski Resort is Israel's only winter ski and snowboard resort located in the Golan Heights in the far north of the country. Apart from the mountain range, the Golan Heights, Upper Galilee region, Safed and Jerusalem receive snowfall every year. At just under 2,700 feet above sea level, snow is not uncommon in the winter in Jerusalem. On average, at least a few flakes fall 7-8 days each year. So, snowfalls are not uncommon and some have buried the city if Jerusalem in almost a foot of snow. Because of its high elevation it certainly is colder than cities like Tel Aviv on the coast of the Mediterranean. From December through January high temperatures in the city average about 53 degrees and low temperatures 44. But on December 28, 1879 the city was hit with one of it’s largest snowstorms ever when 17” accumulated. It shut down the region for travel for more than a week. Learn more about your ad choices. From December 2010: Wesley Hyatt, author of Kicking Off the Week: A History of Monday Night Football on ABC Television, talks to Ed about the many ways in which Monday Night Football owed its immediate success in 1970 to Don Meredith. Meredith not only provided the perfect foil for Howard Cosell every week, but conveyed a looseness to each broadcast that you didn't always see in football announcers at the time. Don Meredith passed away on Dec. 5, 2010 at age 72. Want to advertise/sponsor our show? Today, Nate and Evan sit down with Sara Johnson, Vice President of the Champaign County Audubon Society (CCAS) and Janet Jokela, acting regional Dean of the Illinois School of Medicine, volunteer, and current board member of the CCAS. This episode is dedicated to the Christmas Bird Count (CBC). We sit down, via zoom, and discuss CCAS. How did Sara and Janet get involved in birding and the CCAS? What is the Christmas Bird Count, and what does it mean to each of them? How can a person get involved in their local bird count? History of the Christmas Bird CountPrior to the turn of the 20th century, hunters engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas "Side Hunt." They would choose sides and go afield with their guns—whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won.Conservation was in its beginning stages in that era, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an early officer in the then-nascent Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition—a "Christmas Bird Census" that would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them.So began the Christmas Bird Count. Thanks to the inspiration of Chapman and the enthusiasm of 27 dedicated birders, 25 Christmas Bird Counts were held that day. The locations ranged from Toronto, Ontario to Pacific Grove, California with most counts in or near the population centers of northeastern North America. Those original 27 Christmas Bird Counters tallied around 90 species on all the counts combined. Each November, birders interesting in participating in the CBC can sign up and join in through the Audubon website. From December 14 through January 5 each year tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas brave snow, wind, or rain, and take part in the effort. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this long-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. The data collected by observers over the past century allow Audubon researchers, conservation biologists, wildlife agencies and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. When combined with other surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey, it provides a picture of how the continent's bird populations have changed in time and space over the past hundred years. The long term perspective is vital for conservationists. It informs strategies to protect birds and their habitat, and helps identify environmental issues with implications for people as well. While the rest of the UK will soon leave the European Union's single market, Northern Ireland will effectively remain within it for goods. From December 31 at 11 pm, all agri-food products arriving in Northern Ireland ports and airports from Great Britain will need to carry a Veterinary Export Heath Certificate. Given its position, Northern Ireland is supposed to be a bridge to the EU. But the new customs rules could create a large amount of paperwork. Meanwhile, products from Great Britain may become more expensive and more difficult to source. Our correspondent Hervé Amoric reports.
From December 2018: Game show legend Wink Martindale talks to Ed about his long association with Elvis Presley, which began in July 1954 and continued until the day The King died. Wink was at radio station WHBQ in Memphis, TN on the night when an Elvis Presley record ("That's Alright, Mama") was played on the radio for the very first time, launching a phenomenon that has never stopped.
