Not the welcome we expectedWhen your tour guide is an assassin, what can go wrong?By FinalStand. Listen to the Podcast at Explicit Novels. You can do wrong while trying to do right.FlashbackAlal's 'milk of human kindness' had finally run dry as the Visigoths sacked his Roman villa. While looters ran off with his latest trappings of wealth, and deserted by his servants and his slaves, Grandpa decided that he was tired of fucking around with the Human Race. He felt they were simply too stupid, venal and weak to make any positive, lasting changes in the world.Alal decided that he was going to make the key choices for them. Fuck free will. Fuck letting the vermin that floated to the top of the cesspool destroy everything good in the world, as he had witnessed them doing time and time again. He had lost count of the monuments destroyed, histories of peoples forgotten and benefits to mankind burned away by barbarism and ignorance.By the fading light of August the 26th, 410 CE, Alal found himself sitting back in the pergola (a sort of mini-gazebo) in his rear gardens, drinking through several amphora of wine all the while having a deep philosophical debate with the several dozen very dead Goths decorating his environs. As three or four looters would enter the garden, he would kill them. And then three or four more would show up looking for the earlier group,, on and on. This reinforced Alal's belief that something drastic had to be done. He seriously considered going to the coast, getting a ship and five solid stone anchors. He'd sail out two days, maybe three, wrap himself in the anchors and jump overboard. The problem, as he saw it, was that given a few decades, the ropes would rot and he'd bob to the surface to see again that none of the fundamentals had changed. Further complicating his current thinking was that every time he came close to throwing in the cosmic towel, some more GOD DAMN GOTHS would come around, calling for their buddies, the dead ones. Somewhere around noon on August the 27th, Alal vowed that he was tired of this shit.Right on cue, around twenty Goths came strolling through the rear of his villa and soaked up the carnage out back. Fifty-two of their brethren were in various states of dismemberment and defilement (Alal had been, as usual, angry). They saw this dark-skinned Roman and rightly asked 'where's the army that killed these fellows?' He walked up to them in his wine-splashed toga."Are you the one in charge?" he asked the meanest looking Visigoth in passible Goth."I am," the leader responded. With lightning speed, he killed the man with his own sword. The Germans weren't sure what to make of that, it had happened so fast."You can join me," Alal indicated himself, "or you can join him," he indicated the corpse of their former leader. He had his new band of followers and the rest was Illuminati history.End FlashbackFor me, this meant more to me than living with the memories of a very bitter, driven and pitiless man. Alal was essentially the anti-me. It gave me chills to realize that all of Alal's gifts were bestowed on me with a purpose. I knew it was part of his greater plan. Normally, to end-run an evil genius, you just find him and kill him. Not only would Alal not stay dead, I now knew how well he could fight.I knew only four people who might be in his league, and I wasn't one of them. Of the four, Sakuniyas wasn't likely to help Pamela, Saint Marie and Elsa get the job done. That meant I had to rev up the deception engine to comfort my Aunts with hope, while dispelling the knowledge of how little they mattered to their sire. Almost as bad, I had to ignore what horribly people they were while extending that portion of my soul.It was with some relief that I hugged, kissed, and forcefully separated myself from the Aunts in Dublin. We were going on to Budapest's Ferenc Liszt International Airport. My next action was to make my request to Selena for a contract with the Ghost Tigers to defend Hana when she arrived in Russia. (Of the three 9 Clan Assassin-Babes, Selena was the least impressed with me.) She informed me that the Ghost Tigers didn't do bodyguard work. I still wanted her to relay my request, so she relented. After that, I passed out.We left Dublin around 9:30 am Friday morning and landed in Budapest at 1:45 pm., still Friday. As Rachel rousted me so I could grab a quick shower before touchdown, I was gifted with the misconceptions of my fellow travelers:To put it nicely, Riki thought I was somewhat revolting, Virginia was disturbed and Chaz had lowered his opinion of my moral character. It was the incest thing. Vincent being polite was a pleasant surprise, Delilah's camaraderie less so and Odette was peaches with my most recent sexcapades. She was far too good to me. The Amazons uniformly didn't give a crap."So, is there going to be any other bizarre behavior we should be prepared for?" Riki sat down next to me as I was drying my hair. I was back to my 'jeans, t-shirt and wind-breaker' style."Fine, " I said loudly. "It is really none of your business what I did with and to my mother's clones. Yes, they are all clones of my mother, who died when I was seven." A lie."They are also the genetic creations of my grandfather, also known by many as Cáel O'Shea. They are sterile, they are wickedly evil, and two weeks ago I didn't know they existed. I do have a real aunt in Maryland. She's my Father's sister and is not part of the menagerie. Oh yeah, my grandpa is currently a disembodied spirit, back from the Netherworld and looking for a body to take over, if he hasn't found one already," I added."He was born roughly five thousand years ago, was cursed by an ancient Sumerian Goddess such that he can never just die and stay dead. I have his memories running around my head, which, along with denying me a good night's sleep, allows me to speak an assortment of languages, use virtually every weapon built before 1970 and know that he is a vicious criminal mastermind the likes of which you've never imagined outside of fiction. How does that sound, Riki? Shall I get more bizarre? Trust me, I can," I regarded her evenly. She was speechless, but not out of awe. No, she was certain that I was completely unhinged."Everyone who believes Cáel, raise their hand," Odette demanded. Her hand went up. Odette and the Amazons agreeing was expected by the outsiders. Delilah and Virginia joining in was not."Captain Fairchild?" Colour Sgt. Chaz Tomorrow requested clarification."You've all seen those five O'Shea's that left the plane in Ireland. Barring some cosmetic changes, they were the exact same woman. You can either go with Sean Connery's Tak-ne creating a female clone army, or you can believe there is an otherworldly plastic surgeon altering a cadre of super-rich bitches to all look alike," Delilah, who was a captain of something, put out there."Who in the Hell is Tak-ne?" Riki mumbled."Duh," I poked the State Department lassie. "Connor MacLeod's Egyptian mentor in Highlander, the original movie and in the less than stellar sequel, Highlander: The Quickening"."You are mistaken. Connery was that Spanish guy," Riki poked me back."Actually, the relevant quote is: 'I am Juan Sánchez Villalobos Ramírez, Chief metallurgist to King Charles V of Spain. And I'm at your service'," Vincent regaled us with his movie trivia. "He later reveals that he was born Tak-ne in Egypt in the 9th century BCE. Also, his Spanish name makes no sense, he has one too many surnames.""Agent Loire, I am beginning to find intelligent men to be attractive," Charlotte said."Umm, thank you," Vincent responded warily."This might be a good point to get something clear," Chaz inquired. "Mr. Nyilas, whose side are you on? It appears to be rather complicated.""Okay, Chaz, call me Cáel. Calling me Mr. Nyilas makes me miss my dad. I can also be addressed as Cáel 'Wakko' Ishara, Head of House Ishara of the First Twenty Houses of the Amazon Host. Or, you can call me what the Great Khan does, Magyarorszag es Erdely Hercege. Finally, those who love me, or find me amusing, may call me Fehér mén."Selena's snort indicated she'd failed to hide her amusement at my presumptiveness, both titular and physically."Do you want to explain what's so amusing?" Riki looked over to the Black Hand assassin."Your job should be exceptionally easy now," Selena mocked me, "Prince of Hungry and Transylvania, or do you prefer 'White Stud'?""Laugh while you can, Monkey-Girl," I sneered. "The guy currently making a run at erasing seven hundred years of Asian history gave me that title. As for Fehér mén, that means 'White Stallion' and is symbolic of my ties to House Epona, not a phallic reference." Riki's look had gone from disgust, to anger (because she thought she was being played) and lastly, to shock."No," I interpreted her fear. "I am not here as some vanguard to unite the Magyar people to their cultural kinfolk in Central Asia. If you know your Central European history, you might recall that the Mongols devastated my homeland. For the next 450 years, the Turks were unwelcome visitors, conquerors and overlords. My princely status is a pat on the head for a job well done and nothing more.""What job did you do?" Riki prodded."I saved a man's life," I looked pained to admit. She didn't get it."It must have been a major VIPs life," Chaz suggested."You can say that," Pamela nodded. "End of discussion time too."At Ferenc Liszt International, we were diverted to a private hangar once more, courtesy of the Republic of Ireland's diplomatic umbrella. Three grey Ford Focuses and a white panel truck advertising a furniture repair store awaited us. Security issues were immediately obvious. They wanted to separate us (in the Fords) from most of our luggage (in the truck). The five guy welcoming party hid under the cloak of 'don't speak any language you claim to speak' and Selena was of zip help. So, I spoke to them in Hungarian. They glanced my way, but didn't respond. Serbian? Nope. Romanian? Nope."Bows and doves," I commanded. That translated rather logically as 'guns/bows' and 'phones/doves'. Out came our pistols. The only Black Hand to react fast enough was Selena and Pamela had her covered. The Amazons were aiming at the locals while Delilah and Chaz had their weapons out and scanning. Vincent and Virginia hadn't been fast enough, this time. They also didn't have guns pointed at them. The lead BH flunky began talking calmly in German, heavily Slavic accented German."What do you think you are doing?" he inquired of me, in German."Disarming you, ya Moron," I grumbled. Then added in Hittite; "Go", and in my Amazons went to very roughly search, disarm and de-phone our not so friendly friends."Alright, gather up your luggage," I called out to my group. "We are walking to town." That wasn't truly accurate. There was a metro associated with the airport, a kilometer away max. Our guides didn't speak English so they were rather surprised when the bags came out of the truck and were distributed to their owners. Riki Martin and Odette were in some trouble.Girls and 'only packing the necessities', Well, we had some diplomatic lumber to toss at the security services, Vincent had web-searched our location and the route we needed to take to the metro, and Delilah had purchased week-long public transport passes for the group. Only when we started marching out of the hangar did the BH comprehend the totality of their error. The five guys in the hangar were chattering away, in Hungarian, and Selena was peeved."You are upsetting my superiors by blatantly disrespecting their courtesy," she reminded me. "They have guaranteed your safety.""Less than a day has passed since the shootout in London, Selena," I countered."This is the Black Hand's backyard," Selena persisted, "not London.""So, you are only going to help us if we do stupid shit we wouldn't do, even on our own home ground, is that it?" I chuckled. "Sweet," then, to my people, "I guess we are on our own."The airport security guards didn't know what to make of our group of over-worked Sherpa, but the US State department and the RoI (Republic of Ireland) vouched for us, so they let us pass.We hadn't taken the cars and the truck because that would have been theft. The confiscated guns and phones had been disassembled and tossed into a large iron drum of used aviation lubricant. Odette began shopping around for hotel reservations (I was carrying most of her gear). She was the logical choice because she sounded the most human of the bunch.Selena called her people back, explained the fuck up and engaged in a mutual ass-chewing that spilled over a half-dozen languages and ended up with Dick-head, the local BH chieftain providing us with quarters that would turn a blind eye to our arsenal. With that address in mind, we made for the bowels of modern Budapest.Dutifully, Riki contacted the US Embassy to Hungary's CIA mission head and Chargé D' Affaires, a.i., updating them on our arrival and movements. At the last moment, I had Riki relay the wrong address, on a paranoid hunch. I was right to be paranoid except I was looking in the wrong direction. We had just disembarked at the Kőbánya-Kispest M3 station when we walked into the rolling ambush. A 'rolling ambush' is like a meeting engagement, the difference being that one side (ours) is on the move, not knowing it is being hunted while the other side (our attackers) was rushing to catch up with us, not knowing where along the path they would find us.As we preparing to transition from the station to the attached terminal, looking for the bus line that would connect us to the BH safe house in the Kőbánya (X) District, our attackers were dismounting their vehicles from across the street as well as to our left and right. They were dressed like cops. Had they been armed like cops,"Oh look," I snickered to Pamela, "I see a whole bunch of heavily armed people coming our way.""Good for you," Pamela muttered. "Your eyes are still working.""Do you think they are here to raise me up on their shields and proclaim me 'Prince'?" I joked."I think they are here to kill us," Pamela grinned."I prefer to think positively," I grinned back."I am positive they are here to kill us," Pamela laughed. It had to be our relaxed demeanor that confused them.Had we been the droids they were looking for, we wouldn't have been chatting in the open with our bags in our hands. That would have made us crazy, and they would have been right. We were crazy alright and there was a method to our madness. It was mid-afternoon, yet there were plenty of average Hungarians wandering about.Sure, they saw the 'special cops' closing in. They didn't see the upcoming shoot-out because that was plain nuts. A gun battle in a modern metropolis in broad daylight? London yesterday was an aberration, not the new normal. Our impromptu plan was to let the killers get as close as possible to limit the collateral damage. This wasn't classic Amazon training. It was a concession to allies who did care about civilians killed in the cross-fire. The oncoming hit squad was finally putting faces to targets when Odette broke the calm before the storm. All she did was squeak when Vincent pushed her behind a kiosk. Riki took Virginia shifting her to cover in silence.Delilah took off at a dead-run to the south-east. They were raising their shotguns and assault rifles. We were drawing our pistols. Normally this would have been an unequal match, except that in the time period where, in their eyes, we had gone from bystanders to targets, they'd also covered a good deal of ground, to the point that they were out in the open while my fighting band was in close proximity to all kinds of cover. It started out as eighteen to twelve. Pamela, Chaz and Selena quickly cut down those odd by five. Me? I didn't try to shoot and run at the same time, so I made it to cover and was stuck there by our opponents use of fully-automatic fire.My lack of martial prowess could be forgiven by the reality I was the one they were trying to off. My greatest contribution to this skirmish was tossing my SPAS-12 to Chaz so he could use something more than his standard military issue Glock-17. I had barely gotten Chaz's appreciative nod when two grenades went off in close proximity to me.At first, I heard and felt nothing. My eyes were having trouble focusing. When my limbs began to orient themselves, I had to fight down the instinct to move. I was lying down, which was far safer than staggering around in the middle of this hail of lead. The twin grenades turned out to be their second and very fatal mistake on this mission. The first had been their delay in identifying my group. The second, using the stun grenades, did put me, Pamela and Selena out of commission temporarily. But their mistake was having misplaced my six Amazons in this mess they had created. They did have thirteen shooters versus Chaz, Virginia and Vincent. They rushed our position using the classic advance while firing rote. Two meters from me, the six Amazons revealed themselves with five P-90's and one big-ass bow. Four escaped the kill zone only to find themselves flanked by Delilah. Her .480, combined with their confusion, finished off the survivors. That wasn't the end of it. We still had to effect our get-away.I was still getting my head on straight as the ladies decided to hotwire some of the deceased men's rides and get us the heck out of Dodge. Recovery brought with it the knowledge that Virginia and Chaz had been shot. Pamela, Selena and me, we had some scrapes and bruises. Everyone else checked out. Mona let us know that she could handle the wounded. They wouldn't be doing jumping jacks for a week or two, but a hospital was not required. On the downside, no one believed that eighteen killers dressed as cops randomly rolled up on our transit point by accident. The only people who knew about our change in travel plans had been the Black Hand. We'd lied to the US.We broke into an abandoned factory to stash the vehicles and make our next plan. Selena was coldly furious. Not only did she come to the same conclusion we had, the Black Hand had set us up to be murdered, we weren't letting her call in. Wiesława and Charlotte kept their guns pointed at her, so low was our level of trust.Chaz was pretty much of the opinion that Selena should be coerced to provide us with the names and locations of the Black Hand involved so that we could do our own 'fact finding tour'. Oddly, none of the Americans asked to be pulled out. Vincent and Riki wanted to let the US Embassy know what had happened, yet were willing to wait until we were secure somewhere first.Rachel was on board with Chaz's idea, with the addendum that they kill every Black Hand they could get their hands on before fleeing the city. They had tried to kill ME after all. I was touched. It was Pamela who put things in perspective.1) The attackers were not Black Hand, they were mercenaries and that pointed a bloody finger at the Condottieri.2) Selena wasn't a fanatic and her life had been in as much danger as anyone else's. She wasn't part of our ambush. Her buddies had tossed her under the bus.3) It would have been far easier to catch us in that convoy they'd tried to stick us with. Caught in pre-planned crossfires and without our heavier weapons, we would have all died.4) Having failed to deliver us to the pre-planned ambush site, the Condottieri had to rush to our metro stop because, the safe house they had prepared for us wouldn't have worked. We had the numbers to allow us take total charge of our security once we were in place. No, gauging our numbers, this traitor had sent the mercs into a straight-up fight they'd just lost.

3/8: The Iliad Hardcover – September 26, 2023 by  Homer  (Author), Emily Wilson  (Translator) https://www.amazon.com/Iliad-Homer/dp/1324001801 When Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―revealing the ancient poem in a contemporary idiom that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins,Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer's other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time. The Iliad roars with the clamor of arms, the bellowing boasts of victors, the fury and grief of loss, and the anguished cries of dying men. It sings, too, of the sublime magnitude of the world―the fierce beauty of nature and the gods' grand schemes beyond the ken of mortals. In Wilson's hands, this thrilling, magical, and often horrifying tale now gallops at a pace befitting its legendary battle scenes, in crisp but resonant language that evokes the poem's deep pathos and reveals palpably real, even “complicated,” characters―both human and divine. The culmination of a decade of intense engagement with antiquity's most surpassingly beautiful and emotionally complex poetry, Wilson's Iliad now gives us a complete Homer for our generation. 16th century Zeus and Antiope

Penthesilea was breathtaking. “Aphrodite, the noble bride of the potent War- god, made her beautiful indeed in death, so that the son of Peleus (Achilles), could be pierced by the arrow of chastising love," writes the 4th century AD Greek poet Quintus Smyrnaeus in his poem Posthomerica ("Things After Homer"). In addition to her beauty, Penthesilea was also born into a family of queens. She was the daughter of Ares, the god of war, and Otrera, Queen of the legendary Amazons. Apart from Penthesilea, Ares and Otrera had three other daughters: Hippolyta, Antiope, and Melanippe. Hippolyta went on to become one of the most famous of the Amazon queens, while her other sisters Antiope and Melanippe ruled alongside her over their country's three major cities. Read on the blog.  Legendary Passages #0118,Philostratus the Elder, Imagines Book 2,Image 2,Centaurs & Hippolytus. Previously, Theseus fought a war against the centaurs, and cursed his son Hippolytus to an early death. In this passage, we hear descriptions of the education of Achilles by the centaur Chiron, female centaurs and their foals, and the tragic fate of Hippolytus.  The first image is that of the boy Achilles, fated to fight and die in the Trojan War. He is an athletic boy being trained by the centaur Chiron, like many heroes before him. Chiron lets the boy ride on his back to teach him horse-riding, and rewards his efforts with apples and honey. The second image is of pretty centaur mares, their beauty comparable to Naiad mermaids or the horse-riding amazons. Their babies are born fairly human, eventually sprouting manes and their feet becoming tender hooves, turning wild at a young age. The last image shows the end of Hippolytus, the son of Theseus and the amazon Antiope. Theseus eventually married the sister of Ariadne, Phaedra, and when Hippolytus spurned her advances, she accused him instead. Theseus cursed his own son; and while Hippolytus rode his chariot along the shoreline, a white bull emerged from the waters, terrified his horses, and the chariot crashed. The very landscape of the painting mourns the passing of the mangled youth, handsome even in the throws of death.Centaurs & Hippolytus,a Legendary Passage from,Arthur Fairbanks translating,Philostratus the Elder,Imagines Book 2,Images 2-4.https://www.theoi.com/Text/PhilostratusElder2A.html#22.2. THE EDUCATION OF ACHILLES A fawn and a hare – these are the spoils of hunting of Achilles as he is now, the Achilles who at Ilium will capture cities and horses and the ranks of men, and rivers will do battle with him when he refuses to let them flow, and as reward of those exploits he will bear away Briseïs and the seven maidens from Lesbos and gold and tripods and authority over the Achaeans; but the exploits here depicted, done at Cheiron's home, seem to deserve apples and honey as rewards, and you are content with small gifts, Achilles, you who one day will disdain whole cities and marriage with Agamemnon's daughter. Nay, the Achilles who fights at the trench, who puts the Trojans to rout merely by his shouting, and who slays men right and left, and reddens the water of the Scamander, and also his immortal horses, and his dragging of Hector's body around the walls, and his lamentation on the breast of Patroclus – all this has been depicted by Homer, and he depicts him also as singing and praying and receiving Priam under his roof. This Achilles, however, a child not yet conscious of valour, whom Cheiron still nourishes upon milk and marrow and honey, he has offered to the painter as a delicate, sport-loving child and already light of foot. For the boy's leg is straight and his arms come down to his knees (for such arms are excellent assistants in the race); his hair is charming and loose; for Zephyrus in sport seems to shift it about, so that as it falls, now here, now there, the boy's appearance may be changed. Already the boy has a frowning brow and an air of spirited haughtiness, but these are made gentle by a guileless look and by gracious cheeks that send for a tender smile. The cloak he wears is probably his mother's gift; for it is beautiful and its colour is sea-purple with red glints shading into a dark blue. Cheiron flatters him by saying that he catches hares like a lion and vies with fawns in running; at any rate, he has just caught a fawn and comes to Cheiron to claim his reward, and Cheiron, delighting to be asked, stands with fore-legs bent so as to be on a level with the boy and offers him apples fair and fragrant from the fold of his garment – for their very fragrance seems to be depicted – and with his hand he offers him a honeycomb dripping with honey, thanks to the diligent foraging of the bees. For when bees find good meadows and become big with honey, the combs get filled to overflowing and their cells pour it forth.  Now Cheiron is painted in every aspect like a centaur; yet to combine a horse and human body is no wondrous deed, but to gloss over the juncture and make the two into one whole and, by Zeus, cause one to end and the other to begin in such wise as to elude the eye of the observer who should try to detect where the human body ends, this seems to me to demand an excellent painter. That the expression seen in the eye of Cheiron is gentle is the result of his justice, but the lyre also does its part, through whose music he has become cultured; but now there is also something of cozening in his look, no doubt because Cheiron knows that this soothes children and nurtures them better than milk. This is the scene at the entrance of the cave; and the boy out on the plain, the one who is sporting on the back of the centaur as if it were a horse, is still the same boy; for Cheiron is teaching Achilles to ride horseback and to use him exactly as a horse, and he measures his gait to what the boy can endure, and turning around he smiles at the boy when he laughs aloud with enjoyment, and all but says to him, “Lo, my hoofs paw the ground for you without use of spur; lo, I even urge you on; the horse is indeed a spirited animal and gives no ground for laughter. For although you have been taught by me thus gently the art of horsemanship, divine boy, and are suited to such a horse as I, some day you shall ride on Xanthos and Balios; and you shall take many cities and slay many men, you merely running and they trying to escape you.” Such is Cheiron's prophecy for the boy, a prophecy fair and auspicious and quite unlike that of Xanthos.2.3. FEMALE CENTAURS You used to think that the race of centaurs sprang from trees and rocks or, by Zeus, just from mares – the mares which, men say, the son of Ixion coveted, the man by whom the centaurs though single creatures came to have their double nature. But after all they had, as we see, mothers of the same stock and wives next and colts as their offspring and a most delightful home; for I think you would not grow weary of Pelion and the life there and its wind-nurtured growth of ash which furnishes spear-shafts that are straight and at the same time do not break at the spearhead. And its caves are most beautiful and the springs and the female centaurs beside them, like Naïads if we overlook the horse part of them, or like Amazons if we consider them along with their horse bodies; for the delicacy of their female form gains in strength when the horse is seen in union with it.  Of the baby centaurs here some lie wrapped in swaddling clothes, some have discarded their swaddling clothes, some seem to be crying, some are happy and smile as they suck flowing breasts, some gambol beneath their mothers while others embrace them when they kneel down, and one is throwing a stone at his mother, for already he grows wanton. The bodies of the infants have not yet taken on their definite shape, seeing that abundant milk is still their nourishment, but some that already are leaping about show a little shagginess, and have sprouted mane and hoofs, though these are still tender. How beautiful the female centaurs are, even where they are horses; for some grow out of white mares, others are attached to chestnut mares, and the coat's of others are dappled, but they glisten like those of horses that are well cared for. There is also a white female centaur that grows out of a black mare, and the very opposition of the colours helps to produce the united beauty of the whole.2.4. HIPPOLYTUS The wild beast is the curse of Theseus; swift as dolphins it has rushed at the horses of Hippolytus in the form of a white bull, and it has come from the sea against the youth quite unjustly. For his stepmother Phaedra concocted a story against him that was not true, to the effect that Hippolytus loved her, - but it was really herself that was in love with the youth – and Theseus, deceived by the tale, calls down upon his son the curse which we see here depicted. The horses, as you see, scorning the yoke toss their manes unchecked, not stamping their feet like well bred and intelligent creatures, but overcome with panic and terror, and spattering the plain with foam, one while fleeing has turned its head toward the beast, another has leaped up at it, another looks at it askance, while the onrush of the fourth carries him into the sea as though he had forgotten both himself and dry land; and with erect nostrils they neigh shrilly, unless you fail to hear the painting. Of the wheels of the chariot one has been torn from its spokes as the chariot has tipped over upon it, the other has left its axle and goes rolling off by itself, its momentum still turning it. The horses of the attendants also are frightened and in some cases throw off their riders, while as for those who grasp them firmly about the neck, to what goal are they now carrying them? And thou, O youth that lovest chastity, thou hast suffered injustice at the hands of thy step-mother, and worse injustice at the hands of thy father, so that the painting itself mourns thee, having composed a sort of poetic lament in thine honour. Indeed yon mountain-peaks over which thou didst hunt with Artemis take the form of mourning women that tear their cheeks, and the meadows in the form of beautiful youths, meadows which thou didst call “undefiled,”  cause their flowers to wither for thee, and nymphs thy nurses emerging from yonder springs tear their hair and pour streams of water from their bosoms.  Neither did thy courage protect thee nor yet thy strong arm, but of thy members some have been torn off and others crushed, and thy hair has been defiled with dirt; they breast is still breathing as though it would not let go of the soul, and thine eye gazes at all thy wounds. Ah, thy beauty! How proof it is against wounds no one would have dreamed. For not even now does it quit the body; nay, a charm lingers even on thy wounds.https://www.theoi.com/Text/PhilostratusElder2A.html#4 This passage continues with Rhodogoune, but in our next episode we read a letter from Phaedra to Hippolytus.

March Movie Madness Part 1 (of 3)! March is National Women’s Month, so -ahead of the Snyder Cut- we’re talking about Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984. What did we like? What would we change? What would we throw out altogether?    Tune in next week for our thoughts on the Snyder Cut! Have questions/comments/concerns? Shoot us an email: tencenttakes@gmail.com ----more---- Transcript of Episode: [00:00:00] Jessika: Do you, you can be, you know what, honestly, you can bitch about Snyder again, Hello, hello and welcome to Ten Cent Takes the podcast where we rip into the comic books and characters you know and love, one issue at a time. My name is Jessica Frazier and I'm joined by my cohost, the Bitchin' Baker Mike Thompson. Mike: Hello.  Jessika: Well, if you're new here, the purpose of this podcast is to take a closer look at comic books and comic related media and how it's affected pop culture and our collective consciousness shaping how we view the world around us. Our topic for today is actually a deep dive into the recent [00:01:00] iterations of the Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 84 films. What do you think Mike?  Mike: I'm excited? Uh, I really, I really enjoyed the first Wonder Woman movie when I saw it in theaters. I haven't seen it since then. So it was really just a fun trip down memory lane to sit and watch it with my partner. And then. Kind of tear it apart a little bit, but yeah, we, you know, the, the Wonder Woman, the Wonder Woman, movies, I think are a bright spot and the DC extended universe. And so I'm genuinely jazzed to talk about it with someone else. Like this is kind of like, based on our, our plans for the next couple of episodes, I guess it's almost like March movie madness.  Jessika: Yeah. I was thinking that I was, I was getting myself very mentally prepared for a lot of. Sitting and watching movies with my dog. So I'm excited. So is he, Carl's stoked.  Mike: What's his favorite movie [00:02:00] snack?  Jessika: You know, he just watches me eat movies, snacks, because he doesn't eat people, food. Whoops. I'm not owner where I'm like stuff feeding my dog eat. This is the reason he does not bag. He's such a good boy. Mike: Yeah. Meanwhile, my dogs are all over me as soon as I'm eating lunch, Jessika:  Your dogs are like tiny spiders. I don't know how they climb up so high.  Mike: I don't know either, man. It's weird. All right. So, uh, you are leading this episode, so let's get started. Jessika:  The thing we like to do each week is talk about one cool thing that you have read or watched recently, like right. You take it away.  Mike: Yeah. So the memorable thing that I have been consuming media wise over the past week or so has been a TV show called Resident Alien, which is a new show on the scifi network. Sarah and I were watching it and it's it's it's okay. At [00:03:00] first it's about this alien who crashed lands on earth, kills a human, takes his form, and then has to assume the identity of a small town doctor. It's kind of a, a sci-fi comedy drama, but it stars Alan Tudyk, who if you've watched over the past 20 years he shows up in and he is, I think one of the most underrated actors, he really is just so wonderful at playing weird roles. And so he plays this character who is an alien, trying to blend in badly with humans in a small town in Colorado. And he is so funny and you watch it and you're. You can understand how people kind of write them off as just, "Oh, this is a guy who is somewhere on the spectrum," but it's based on a comic book from Dark Horse. Um, and so after watching a bunch of these episodes and falling in love with the show, I downloaded it on Hoopla and just started reading it. And it's really solid.  Wow. That's  Jessika: awesome. I actually didn't even realize that that was based [00:04:00] off of a comic.  Mike: I didn't until about three episodes in, and then it said based on the comic book. And so that was when I looked it up.  Jessika: That's so cool. Actually, one of my really good friends has been talking about watching that show. So I guess he's going to be irritated that once again, he wasn't the one to get me to watch the thing, but here we are.  Mike: So how about you? What have you been consuming? Jessika: Well, recently I've been trying to get through another. Watch through of the MCU films. Um, and I've been doing them in timeline, chronilogic-, chronological order, starting with Captain America. So that chronology it's been fun.  Mike: Yeah. So Captain America and then Captain Marvel and then Iron-Man?  Jessika: Yes. Yes.  Mike: Okay. Cool.  Jessika: Proceeding in that order, hadn't realized how many of those films I had missed. When I was first going through them, there are so many of them. So I [00:05:00] started watching just in order, making sure I wasn't missing any of them. Even if people said, Oh, you don't need to watch that one. Okay. No, let me just watch the thing and just make sure, and I was surprised there were a couple of them that I liked more than some of the conversations I had would have led me to believe I would have. So it's been fun. So let's roll into our conversation about our first film, which is Wonder Woman. And I hadn't watched this one. I watched it in theaters as well. I realized, and then hadn't watched it like you until recently until just last night, actually.  Mike: Yeah. So I watched it about two hours before we started to record this episode.  Jessika: You're fucking fresh. You're there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Super fresh. The bad day. The wound is fresh.  Mike: Yeah.  Jessika: Well, I'll give a quick synopsis before we do each of our films. So this one was released in [00:06:00] 2017. And the film follows the character development of Diana Prince, and we watch her training and growth through her early adolescence in the fabled land at Themiscyra, learning the art of battle from an entire Island of strong, fierce and driven women. All of this is brought to a screeching halt when a world war one fighter pilot breaks through the magical borders of their land, prompting Diana to leave the safety of her home land in order to fight against an ancient, evil, and save mankind from. Themselves. So, Mike, what was your favorite part of the film and what would you like to throw immediately directly into the trash? Mike: Oh, man. Okay.  It's hard to decide what my favorite part is. There's a lot of this movie that I really like, I, I guess I'd have to say it's really the setting, you know, World War One was a really bold narrative choice and I really liked how Patty Jenkins used to frame the [00:07:00] overall story. It's it's a really overlooked period of history, I think, because we just don't usually want to take that hard look at how awful we really were. It was a really excellent contrast to the parts of the movie that are set in them mascara. And by comparison, I kind of like to trash the entire third act. I don't know how you felt about it, but. I don't feel like that third act is nearly as strong as what comes before it. And Patty Jenkins has talked about how Warner brothers I made last minute changes and forced her to do this giant CGI boss battle after she planned for something that she describes as smaller. Um, you know, and, and on top of that, I feel like that third act doesn't offer any real payoff for Diana's party outside of Steve Trevor. So it feels like this very kind of... eh, "fine" conclusion [00:08:00] to a movie that felt really strong otherwise.  Jessika: Yeah. I would absolutely agree with that. Absolutely. And I th the ending was very, for me, very kind of, eh.  Mike: Yeah! I, yeah, and I mean, I was talking to Sarah about this and I said, it felt like when I sit there and I think back about the movie I was sitting there and going, Oh yeah: so they, they have that ball. And then they're at an airport. I can't remember what happens in between and it turns out not much, but it's a very sudden shift and again, it just, it doesn't quite work. So, yeah, that's, uh, that's kind my, my overall feeling about the movie, like what, what about you? Like, what did you really like and not like. Jessika: Well, I found the movie itself, and this is with both of the films. They're just beautiful. They're just, they're such a treat. It's like eating dessert. [00:09:00] And even the gritty parts are very artistically done. They're, they're framed in a way that's that makes all of the characters look very alive and real, but at the same time, almost a, almost a glorification of themselves is how it feels.  So that was very, a very interesting way to, to kind of frame that in my opinion now, for what I would throw directly away is I really wish that they had not focused so much on Diana's infatuation with Steve. Like he legitimately just met this guy, take a breath. I know he's literally the only man you've ever met, but look around and then look in the mirror. I on the other hand, it's just, yeah, I don't know. The women are so fierce too. So I will go back to that. The women are super fierce and I [00:10:00] love how they show such a range of emotions that movies don't usually allow for, for women. And they showed strength and rage and honor, and little girls are usually told that those things are done for them and not by them. Mike: Sarah had a really good. Point of view along the lines of, I don't understand why Diana doesn't go out and just get laid a whole lot. Like what's so special about Steve Trevor. Like, yeah, he's good looking, but, but at the same time, he's the first dude you meet and then suddenly you're surrounded by a plethora of dudes, you know, maybe, maybe treat it like a buffet. Jessika: And I, I feel like it would almost be more true to her upbringing if she did go out and not have a care about, you know, the way she expressed herself, I feel like that would be more authentic to, to how she learned about the pleasures of the flesh as she called them. When she called men obsolete. I just about, I lost my mind, my dog [00:11:00] barked because I was laughing so hard.  Mike: I will give some kudos to Steve. He didn't sit there and react like a douche. He was just, he kind of had this wounded. No, no, we're not obsolete. We're not useless then that was kind of, yeah, but yeah.  Jessika: What was your biggest lesson or takeaway?  Mike: I'm not sure I had a lesson from it. Like I said before, you know, my, my big takeaway was that this was the first time I found myself enjoying any of the DC EU movies that had come out to that point. So I guess my biggest takeaway was that I finally had some hope for the overall film franchise, but there was this tweet that I remember seeing a couple of days later where it was a picture of Carrie Fisher as General Leia and then Robin Wright as Antiope. And it said "I've lived long enough to watch my princesses grow [00:12:00] up to become generals." And I thought that was a really lovely sentiment just to have seen, to have seen the embodiment of all these, these characters became what I wanted them to. Jessika:  Absolutely. And actually that ties very well into what I kind of took away from this, which was. You very well, may be stronger than society would have you believe so. Yeah. Well, let's talk about our, our next fish on the butcher block here. Wonder Woman 84.  Mike: Ah, man, this was, this was a movie that I remember you and I both had feelings about. And I feel like we're going to spend a little bit more time talking about those.  Jessika: Probably. This other one was very like doo doo doo let's jump through the park. You know, there are daisies and strong women I'm there. Um, this, this other one felt [00:13:00] very much more problematic and wow, that's such an, an intro I'm leading us. Aren't I But here we go, ladies and gentlemen and theys. So having just been released in the last couple of months at the tail end of 2020 Wonder Woman 84 is set in current day with Diana Prince bossing it out, being the extremely knowledgeable antiquities expert. She is after the discovery of a wish granting object that falls into the wrong hands and inadvertently makes Diana normal, heavy quotations normal. Our heroine must make the ultimate selfless decision in order to save the world again. So, Mike, what, what are your thoughts on your least on your favorite IC? I just started with the least your favorite and least desirable portions of this film. You [00:14:00] go first. I have opinions. Mike: Man, I really gotta have a cigarette that I can take a drag from when, when I'm having these, these moments of kind of wistful regret. God, like I said, you know, I'm, I'm a lot more conflicted about, about this movie than I was with the first one. I think the best thing about this movie was Kristen Wiig. I, she was just an absolute standout and. That fight scene that they gave her in the White House, uh, where Diana and her are just beating each other's ass. And then Kristen Wiig ends up mopping the floor with her after a little bit. I thought that was just amazing first of all, and second, I thought it was a really good example of what this movie did best, which was the smaller scenes were generally. So, so good. Which contrasts with what my big problem was, [00:15:00] which is that the quote, big moments kind of left me rolling my eyes. Like, you know, it's, it's those moments that were meant to be epic or super emotional. And I can't remember one of them that really worked. Like there's that action sequence in Egypt slash Bialya. Yeah, it's the, it's that big action sequence with the motorcade where it's supposed to be this really cool thing where she's jumping from car to car and moving super fast and chasing things down. And it just, it looks so cheap and there were so many totally obvious green screen moments that just really took me out of it. Um Jessika: Yeah.  Mike: You know, and, and on top of that, there's the, the extra heightened urgency to it, where they have the kids playing soccer and then they get into the street. Right? When this, when this convoy is coming down the road and I just, I couldn't, man, I rolled my eyes so hard. It was so dumb. And then the same thing with Kristen Wiig's heel turn when she [00:16:00] beats up and almost murders, the guy who tried to rape her in the park. And I mean, Sarah and I were both on her side, you know, Sarah actually pointed out that a way more effective heel turn would have been if the homeless guy that she had brought the food to earlier in the movie and who shows up at the end of that scene, and she, she gets really aggro with. But if she had actually just been really dismissive of him, when he tried to say hi to her or something where she had just been like, I don't have time for you. And then there's finally that bit where Steve dies again.  Jessika: Good riddance. Goodbye, Steve.  Mike: Ahh, I, I really like Chris pine too. Jessika: I mean, I do too. Chris pine hit us up beyond this podcast. I'm sure he listens.  Mike: I'm sure, but like that whole sequence where they just, they turn it up to 11 where he sits there and right before she like renounces her wish you hear him go, I'll love you forever. And [00:17:00] there's a lack of subtlety throughout most of this movie that just kind of left me scratching my head and you know, and then there's also just the less, we talk about that final fight between Diana and Barbara, when she looks like a shitty thunder cat. Oh God, I don't know. I, I feel like there were just too many cooks in the kitchen man, because like, the story just feels like it's trying to go in too many directions in any one of them would have been fine, but the movie settles for this messy middle ground instead of filling, committing to any one direction and they just. And they try to make up for that by, by going really intense and it doesn't work. So, yeah, that's my thoughts. Jessika: In the sense of kind of trying to do too much, why do we have two villains? Could we not have, you know, had her kind of evolve at the very end of this film and have [00:18:00] her be in the next film or something, or, you know, have, have something happen or I guess that wouldn't have worked with the whole wish breakdown, but. Is there some way where we didn't have to have a quarter of a story for each of these characters and then Diana making shitty decisions. The rest of it.  Mike: I have thoughts about that, that we can talk about later on, but I mean, there's so many ways that they could have done the cheetah's origin, the, the recent, uh, the recent rebirth Wonder Woman comics that were done by Liam sharp and Greg Rucka. The whole focus is about how Wonder Woman and, and by extension Barbara Minerva's paths are so tangled and so warped by all these red cons and everything. And it's trying to resolve it in a way that that kind of honors all the previous stories, but also explains this new, this new development. And it worked really well. I really liked it a lot, but I mean, The whole thing with making with the [00:19:00] way that they did it, it was okay. But I, I agree. It was, it was too many villains at once. It was the same thing that they did in Spider-Man three with Toby Maguire, where it was like, there are three villains because there's a third movie and you're just kind of whatever  Jessika: Spider-Man learns to shoot webs out of his feet to compensate  Mike: Speedermin. Jessika: Yes. So get Spider-Ham involved.  Mike: Oh man. I would watch that movie.  Jessika: Let's get on that.  Mike: Okay. So like I've already vented my spleen, but like what, how about you? Tell me how you're feeling. Jessika:  Let's I'm going to start easy. I'm not going to jump into the negative right away, although it's bursting to come out. So my favorite part was definitely the very beginning. With a whole stadium full of strong women. I don't think that I can say enough about the fact that we don't get that very often. We don't get to see even a whole scene full [00:20:00] of women very often, let alone that many women let alone women who are competing and supporting each other and fighting and being fierce and being strong. Those aren't things that we get that often. And so I, I started crying the first time I saw this and I, I watched this movie two times when it first came out and I started crying when I first started watching the scene and I was like, well, that's stupid, but it's not, it's not stupid. It's, it's something that we don't get to relate to. And I'm a person who, um, I'm not going to say like, I'm a strong person, but I'm just like, I'm built a little more muscly. You know, I'm a runner. I can lift heavy things. And so to see someone represented that matches my not necessarily physique, but that matches like my motivation to go do those things. Maybe not to that effect like Diana, but in that same sense, it really hits me in a spot that a lot of these floofy princessy things [00:21:00] don't. I'm not a floofy princess. I would love to be a floofy princess. I dress like one sometimes, but ultimately in court they'd be like, you don't fit in that dress. So, and that's okay. We don't all fit in the stupid dress.  Mike: Yeah. So you and I both come from that hearty peasant stock we're meant for working in the fields.  Jessika: Oh yeah. I can, I can pick up a whole mess of oxen. Just pick them up all at once. So let's, let's move into the, Oh my God. I hated this. I hated this so much. So you and I, we talked about this I'm we're going to do it again. So the whole Steve possessing another dude's body it's super gross.  Mike: And the problem is that that really sucked the oxygen out of the room. When we were talking about, about problems with this movie and, and it's something that really felt pointless. There was really no driving reason for that to happen. [00:22:00] And, yeah. Oh please like go out on. Sorry. I cut you off.  No, that's  Jessika: okay. I mean, there could have been so many other ways that, that he came back, quote unquote, but there were consequences to him coming back or, you know, something like that, but it didn't have to be him taking over another person's like faculties, that's not okay. And it's interesting to me that everybody else finds this super gross too, but I think it's, it's interesting because it's, it's because it's a guy there's a ton of outrage about this because it's a man, but this pretty consistently happens to female characters in films and TV and women many times have very little to no agency regarding what happens to them on screen. But we clearly view this as normal. So it really speaks to how our society functions to see the absolute outrage at this male character being treated like any [00:23:00] given female character in our media. Also the bit at the end of the film where Diana kind of gives the unnamed hallmark looking bro, and knowing look like, yeah, with that, it's, it's just gross. He didn't have any say in the matter when the implied sexual acts happened, he was not in control of his body. Nor able to consent. And quite honestly, it reminds me there's a super assist and trigger warning. Everyone. It reminds me of how many, many women's stories of not knowing what exactly happened to them went down. You know, there are so many women who have no idea.  Mike: I mean, because there's that whole aspect where Steve, Trevor, you know, is basically just his, his spirit is just thrust into some random dudes body, but. There's also the bit where it's implied that he just has no memory of anything happening for days. So I think, I think that was just [00:24:00] massively problematic on a number of levels, aside from what you've just mentioned, but just narratively where it's like, what is this dude going through? Where, where he's sitting there with his friends and they're like, Hey, remember that crazy week where nuclear war almost broke out and all he can sit there and say is like, not really. Jessika: Yeah. Yeah. I, I really hope that they were trying to make the point that I'm making or the point that I'm feeling about this. But I feel like it's so lost. I feel like we feel the outrage, but we don't, we don't feel the other side of what that outrageous portraying the fact that, that the other side of the world or the other half of the people live that reality. Mike: Well, yeah. You know, back to what I was saying about too many cooks in the kitchen, like this was a story that was written by three different people. There was Patty Jenkins, there was Geoff Johns, and then there is Dave Callaham. This is all armchair quarterbacking. I don't know. I am willing to [00:25:00] bet that that whole Steve getting thrust into someone else's body and then no real follow through on that narrative. I would be willing to bet that that was something that came from either Johns or Callaham. And it just, it was something that they didn't think about because it's not something that dudes think about a lot.  Jessika: Yeah. You don't have to.  Mike: Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, I can think of at least half a dozen ways that you could have made that work without bringing in that, that whole rapey connotation. Jessika: I agree. Like what if he came back and he wasn't like corporal okay. How interesting would that be? Like, if you just came back like Patrick Swayze ghost style, and they're just like, are you thinking about what I said that they're just like sitting, they're like making pottery.  Mike: Well, and I remember sitting there and watching it when the trailers came out and originally I was thinking, Oh, no, maybe it's just, he's a ghost that's come back. Like, it's probably not going to be a real thing or, or it's a hallucination. [00:26:00] And then they show him, you know, beating ass while they're doing that whole convoy chase. So I had to sit there and go, well, no, I guess he's corporeal. I don't know how they're going to pull this off. And I just, I felt really dissatisfied with, with what they did. I didn't have a problem with him coming back, but I mean, honestly the whole fact that, you know, Wonder Woman reveals that that Diana is a god, why not just bring him back. But the thing is, is that manifesting a body out of nothing, it turns out it takes a lot of energy. And so he is directly draining her divine power. Jessika: That's so much better, honestly, that makes so much more sense. Cause there was actually causing correlations. Yeah. I, this whole Diana feeling bad because at some random dude, just, I mean, with a slick wink at the end is not convincing that that was a detriment to her, you know, she's she didn't have like the whole idea was that. [00:27:00] You were giving up your most precious whatever to get the most precious, whatever, you know, and it's like, that wasn't really what she was doing. She just was using some guy and she really didn't care. I mean, that's the long and the short of it. She did not care.  Mike: And that was whew. That adds a whole other problematic element. Jessika: Yeah, absolutely.  Mike: There are certain characters who. Yeah, we can get the alternate universe versions of them, or they can be mine controlled and turn evil temporarily. But the core character being is that they are these uncorruptable aspirational beings that we all want to use as the proverbial role models. And so there's the characters like, like Superman who is decent and kind Captain America, who always tries to do what's right. Wonder Woman who is supposed to be the embodiment of like kindness. And there's a wonderful speech about how in one of her comics where she's saying like, you know, I [00:28:00] don't, I don't kill if I can wound, I don't wound if I can, I think capture... I can't remember this exactly. And I don't capture if I can use a word instead. That's great. You know, one of her, one of her things is that she can speak the language of all living things. And it's like, there's this, there's this really nurturing quality to her because of all that. And then it's like, Oh, and you know, she, you know, It took away a dude's agency and is totally unapologetic about it. Jessika: Yeah, absolutely. And I, I feel like it came across so much better that first movie, when she really wanted to go help the woman in the trench and, you know, and she was able to speak the language and understand the pain, not only of the language, but she really understood people's pain and what they were going through. She wanted to stop and help everyone, but it didn't feel like she was driven in the same way in the second movie. Even when she was supposed to have like learned her lesson, it didn't feel that way. Well, what was your big takeaway from this film? Did you have [00:29:00] one?  Mike: Ah, I guess, again, it's one of those things where I don't have a lesson that I'm taking away from it so much, but it was just that overcorrection is a definite thing in the DCEU. And they, they did it in Batman vs. Superman, where they were trying to acknowledge and, and sort of hold accountable that, that first Man of Steel movie for like the massive body count from all the destruction of the Kryptonians fighting each other. I feel like they did it again here because it was such a, a different movie. And I don't quite know what they're trying to correct, to be honest, but it just, it felt like they were trying to pivot and then they pivoted too hard.  Jessika: Yeah.  Mike: Yeah. What about you?  Jessika: I would say that I learned that society only gets upset at lack of bodily agency. If it involves controlling a man, that would be my take It's a rough one. Rough, like sandpaper up [00:30:00] like a little kitty cat's tongue.  Mike: Remember when we started this podcast and we thought it was going to be really fun and lighthearted and... Yeah.  Jessika: And we've got 13 pages of notes and just angst.  Mike: The salad days.  Jessika: Oh, you know, the planning phase is always super fun. Well, comparison time we watched two movies. They were... supposed to be in the same vein of movies, one was supposed to roughly follow the other from my understanding. So what was one thing that was similar or did not track it all when the two films were side-by-side or pick one thing that you, that you thought was interesting?  Mike: Yeah. Yeah. So a big thing in both of the movies is that the gods like to mettle with humanity, like. You know, the the first movie it's, it's very blatant about that. You know, Aries is responsible for World War [00:31:00] One, and Diana has to set out to kill him and the war to end all Wars in 1984, it feels like there was supposed to be a big twist or reveal when it's revealed that the dream stone was created by the God of Lies. We get, we get the name of, of the God who I can't remember for the life of me, because it was so one-off and then nothing comes from that. And I feel like there could have been something really cool tying the God of lies and deceit. And I think greed, I think, is what they said to the two things that the eighties was really known for, which was one was the Cold War, but the two was just the incredibly gross commercialization.  Jessika: I thought you were going to say that .Brings us to our first episode. Watch our look, go, go back and listen to our Sunday comics episode, which is episode one. Mike:  Yeah. I feel like that was a really wasted opportunity because nothing came about from that. [00:32:00] And I don't know. I, I also feel like that could have been, that could have been tied to providing Barbara with, you know, a... second opportunity to get back at Diana. I dunno, I did enjoy the whole bit where the, the actual ending to that movie was its own way, a smaller, more personal ending. I liked that, but I feel like, I feel like we needed something as a little bit more of a dramatic reveal as opposed to, oh, the dream stone was created by the gods. Cool. But we got to see her murder, the God of war with lightning.  Jessika: Exactly.  Mike: Yeah. What about you? Like, how do you feel that it compares side-by-side?  Jessika: I thought I would stick with something that I thought was interesting. That was fun between the two that was similar. Okay. Steve and Diana go through a very similar arc of discovering their new world that they've been introduced to. And I didn't really [00:33:00] remember that until I rewatched wonder woman for this iteration last night, I was like, Oh, how funny? Because. Diana comes to new world and she's like, Oh, look at all of these cool things. And she's like, Oh, that's beautiful . Oh, a baby. And she's like looking every single thing. She wants to look at everything. It's all new it's. This is literally the first time she's seen any of these things before. So it's super wholesome. My favorite part of this was when she gets the ice cream. This is so wholesome. She gets the ice cream and she enjoys it so much and she goes back and she says, "you should be very proud." And I just, it was like, you are so sweet. That is amazing. And just, I mean, it's like looking at the world, like through a child's eyes I can imagine. And then Steve, when he first comes in, I mean, obviously he was a, he was a pilot, but he hasn't seen [00:34:00] commercial airlines. He hasn't seen, you know, anything that holds more than probably two or three people. And the first thing he sees is like a huge commercial Boeing fly over him. And it was so cool and him going and finding out about space, travel and going and seeing a rocket. And it just. It was so cool. And seeing that through his eyes in that way was like, wow. Yeah, that is really neat. It's cool. And it makes you appreciate those things like, yeah, I guess ice cream is really cool.  Mike: I, I got to say Chris pine continues to be one of my favorite actors out there and not just because he's super adorable and apparently a very decent human being, but just.  Jessika: I mean, Chris pine hit us up.  Mike: Yeah. He also takes very weird, funny roles a lot of the times that you wouldn't expect. So, uh, if [00:35:00] you have not seen the movie Stretch, I highly recommended because it is one of the most bonkers roles that you will ever see him. If I remember right he, he first appears on camera, parachuting naked? I think? It's been a little while. It's been a little while since I've seen this, but it's directed by, uh, Joe Carnahan. The guy who did, uh, Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, The Grey, uh, he just did a new one called Boss Level that's on Hulu, which is a really fun, strange action movie, which is where he kind of is at his strongest. But Stretch is about this one day that's absolutely insane for this limo driver and it's, it's... I'm not going to call it a good movie, but it's highly enjoyable, at least from my end as I remember it. But yeah. So Chris pine tangent over, sorry, Chris pine is really good at [00:36:00] just being very believable and the wide-eyed wonder that he showed in 84, I thought was so it was just lovely.  Jessika: He's a really good facial actor. Yeah, he's very, very, but like, to your point, he's very believable and his facial acting is so good. Do you remember in Star Trek? When he was in Star Trek?  Mike: Oh, yes, of course. Love those movies.  Jessika: Um, just his face when he concentrates in that movie where he gets all red and it's like, Oh, it's like, Oh, wow. Do you really live in that? You know, it's like he would go on their journey with him because his face is just taking us there. Mike: He kind of reminds me of Chris Hemsworth, um, because he he's really good at being a solid leading man, but he is also really funny when he's allowed to be [00:37:00] like, do you remember in the third one -Star Trek Beyond- where at the very beginning where he's got all the aliens. And you can just see him getting more and more confused as they're asking him why he's delivering this artifact and then getting really fed up. It was, I don't know why, but I still laugh whenever I see that scene. Oh man.  I got to agree with you. I think, I think that whole montage of him rediscovering the world was, was really just delightful. Yeah, it was, it felt special. Yeah.  Jessika: Well, so I have a little bonus category for Oh, Oh, okay. So I, you know, again, I watched wonder woman last night for the umpteenth time and I jotted down just a few, very Diana quotes as I was okay. Mike: My body is ready for this number one.  Jessika: Who will I be if I stay? [00:38:00] That one hit me, I would hit me right in the heart.  Mike: Yeah.  Jessika: Yeah. Second one. I'm the man who can.  Mike: Who was that a Steve line or was that something that  Jessika: She said that, Diana said that . Mike: Really? I totally don't even remember this that's great.  Jessika: It's when she was going into, uh, they were talking about no man's land and he said, there isn't a man who can go there or like there's no man can go there. And she said, I'm the man who can.  Mike: Okay. Yeah, I totally glossed over that, which is really appalling. I mean, arguably the best scene in the movie.  Jessika: I, I literally have chills. It's I'm rethinking about that, that scene. That was sexy. It was sexy as hell. And the third quote, what I do is not up to you.  Mike: That was really good. Jessika: Yes. [00:39:00] So that was, those were my three quotes. They stood out to me. So I wrote them down. Well, let's move on to our category, brain wrinkles. And we like to spend a little time each episode talking about something comic related that just won't budge from our consciousness. Mike, what's been stuck in your noggin, right? Mike: So. We're we're doing these, these episodes, this one, and then the next couple, because the infamous Snyder Cut is launching this week. And, and do you want, do you want me to wait for you to Irish up your tea there?  Jessika: Oh yeah. I'm almost done with my coffee. Oh, good. I have a second one sitting right here.  Mike: But yeah, the, you know, the big thing that people have been focusing on ever since the Snyder Cutcat got announced and it was revealed has been the presence of Darkseid, who is, is basically the DC version of Thanos. [00:40:00] And I'm trying really hard to go into this movie with an open mind, regardless. I keep thinking about Darkseid as the villain that everyone wanted to see on the big screen, but it's really weird to realize that we're probably not going to see the coolest story with him in it, which is called the Great Darkness Saga. And it's from the eighties and it's from the comic book Legion of Superheroes, which does not have the name brand appeal of the Justice League. The whole thing is that Darkseid wakes up after roughly a thousand years of sleep and winds up almost conquering the galaxy. And it's absolutely batshit. It's like he brings back like rever- I think they're called reverse clones or shadow clones of like Superman and if I remember right Wonder Woman, and it's a huge reveal when they actually reveal that halfway through the series or the story of five issues, that Darkseid is the villain who's doing all this. So it was, it was really [00:41:00] fun. And it's, it's that wonderful, weird, crazy space opera sci-fi that we're just not going to see in the current movie environment, because it's so risky to do something like that.  Jessika: But see, that just sounds cool as hell I need. If we, if we can have, if we can have Guardians of the Galaxy, like why can't we have that?  Mike: Yeah. And I think a lot of it is because again, I'm not trying to sound like a Marvel fan boy, but I think right now, the, I think Warner Brothers is very risk-averse for, for all of the financial stuff that's going on behind the scenes with, with AT&T acquiring them recently and the insane amount of debt that's surrounding that whole deal. I think that they are trying to just do surefire hits. You know, if you, if you haven't read The Great Darkness Saga, you can actually go out and pick up a copy, pretty cheap of the collected edition. It's a [00:42:00] lot of fun, but one of the coolest things about it is that the, the epilogue to the story reveals actually that Darkseid wins in a way that's very personal and mean. And I kinda love that that at the time the team was allowed to do something like that. So, yeah, that's, that's, what's been on my brain lately. How about you? Jessika:  I'll have to check that out though. You always give me such good suggestions.  Mike: Oh, well, thank you.  Jessika: So my brain wrinkle and hear me out. Okay. I really liked Iron Man 3.  Mike: I rather enjoyed it.  Jessika: Everyone gives it such crap. Okay. I literally like every time I talked about like, oh, I'm doing a watch through, they were like, Oh, you know how people always have an opinion about like, which movies you can like skip, you know what I mean? So like Iron Man 3 is always one of the ones that people say, Oh, you can [00:43:00] skip that one. But honestly, I rather liked it. And quite frankly, this is, I mean, The main, so the main complaint I've heard about this is that Tony is too traumatized and feely, but like, what do you expect? The guy clearly has, he's been through a ton of shit. He clearly has PTSD and he clearly needs therapy and he's making wearable weapons as an outlet, which by the way, not recommended. I also think this movie is so necessary so that Tony stark overall character arc, otherwise. His final sacrifice and his like, kind of tenderness towards the Spider-Man character. It doesn't make any sense within the story or the character if he just continued with his one note selfish, douchebag tendencies. Mike: Yeah. I really enjoyed that movie for a number of reasons. I personally think it could have used a little bit more editing, but I mean, there was no personal lesson -I [00:44:00] felt- an Iron Man 2. Like Iron Man 2 was a, it's a fun, it's a fun movie, but it was like, cool. Like the end of the day, like. He gets to make out with a girl and, and his best friend has a suit of armor now. And I don't know, was there any more of a lesson other than Mickey Rourke is fun to watch? No matter what kind of terrible Russian accent he's sporting.  Jessika: Other than that, I mean, the movie itself, to me, wasn't very memorable. Mike:  No, I mean, it was fun, but it was just kind of whatever, you know, it was cotton candy. Yeah. Yeah. It was fine in a, in a, in nothing but a complimentary way. The third one, I, I agree. I think, I think like the self-sacrificing nature does actually pay off better because of that. And also I thought Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin and then the twist with him as the Mandarin was one of the funniest fucking things I'd seen in a long time. Jessika: One of my friends was very irritated at that and [00:45:00] almost walked out of the theater because the Mandarin is one of his favorite characters. And so when he figured out that it was this whole spoof, he got, he took it very personally, apparently. So which I just personally, I mean, I, I think it's very funny. I can understand you wanting to see your favorite characters represented, but we have to understand that, like you're not the writer. We're not the writer. Like we can sit here and bitch about it, but ultimately, like we don't have writing privileges. And so we just have to go on the ride that they take us on. And to a certain extent, that's just what we have to do as the audience. And I understand that we are going to have feelings and that's that, you know what that means. That means that they've done well. That means that they've, they've been compelling and that they've made us, they've made a spot in our hearts. But it's not something we should be able to take personally, or that we need to, in my opinion, I mean, I don't do it. Do what you want.  Mike: You know, the other thing is like they, they did all those [00:46:00] Marvel shorts as well. Do you remember those, like where you would get them in the DVDs and there'd be like a little five minute film or whatever. So I can't remember which one it was, but it was revealed that the Mandarin was. Was then being broken out of jail so that he could be brought to face the real Mandarin. And then they've never done anything with that, but they're also doing, uh, the new Shang-Chi movie, which Shane, she is this Bruce Lee style figure. The movie title is called Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Which goes back to the terrorist organization, the Ten Rings. And then the whole thing with the Mandarin is that in the comic books, he has 10 rings of power, which originally they're supposed to be magic rings, and then they've been retconned. So they're an artificial intelligent rings that manipulate reality, or they're, they're kind of like lesser infinity stones if I remember. Right.  Jessika: But it's not the same kind of thing that, that Dr. Strange is [00:47:00] working with right? It's not that whole like mystic circle sitch.  Mike: Uh, I don't think so, but who knows with where they're going to take the Marvel with, you know, the MCU is spinning stuff on its head in certain ways. And yeah, and I, you know, we're just along for the ride, it's going to be really interesting to see what they do, but in the original iron man movie, the terrorist organization that winds up forcing Tony Stark to theoretically build weapons for them and what he uses to build the armor. Instead, they are called the Ten Rings. And the Mandarin is, is actually a long running iron man villain -kind of problematic because he's relatively racist in a lot of ways or a racist caricature- but it'll be really interesting to see what they do with that. And I'm kind of hoping that we get some cameo of Ben Kingsley just like chained up, like, you know, princess Leia style with Jaba the Hutt or something like that when the Mandarin theoretically appears in Shang-Chi. So who knows.  [00:48:00] Jessika: Yeah.  Mike: Yeah.  Jessika: Well, thanks for listening to Ten Cent Takes. Wonder Woman is a fantastic addition to the DC Extended Universe. Where Man of Steel succeeded as a science fiction movie, Wonder Woman succeeded as a war story and a fantasy film. Join me as I delve into this story, discussing the themes, praising the balanced tone that maintains the depth of Man of Steel and Batman V Superman while adding character-centric humour, and see how the film connected emotionally with me on a level I was not expecting. ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven. I’m Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of the stars And I am a nerd   This is episode 31 of the podcast This is episode 32 of the podcast   Today, we continue our look at the DC Extended Universe with Wonder Woman.   The description on IMDB reads When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.   The screenplay was written by Allan Heinberg From a story written by Zach Snyder, Allan Heinberg and Jason Fuchs The film was directed by Patty Jenkins And it first released on the 25th of May 2017   So let’s talk about Wonder Woman   We are introduced to Wonder Woman in present day Paris. Working at the Louvre. And we immediately get our first bit of connective tissue with the DC universe as the Wayne Enterprises van pulls up. That photo that Bruce found and emailed to her in Batman V Superman. He’s found the original. He thought she might like it. Isn’t that sweet. He still wants to hear the story.   And that takes us to Dianna’s childhood. Thymiscera looks awesome. All those waterfalls and stone buildings. Incredible visuals. They cast young Dianna quell. Not only is she a coll little actress, but I recently saw a photo of her beside a childhood shot of Gal Gadot. They look very similar. It’s so cute seeing young Dianna mimicking the actions of the adults as they battle. You’ll notice that this entire sequence in Thymascyra gives us no sense of time, all the way until Steve arrives. That makes sense. This is a world to itself. Completely cut off and self-sufficient. To them, the outside world doesn’t exist.  But I find myself wondering. How old exactly is Dianna when she meets Steve? When are these childhood scenes set? We know Amazons don’t age like humans. We know Dianna was created by Zeus in the times of the ancient greeks. So how long was her childhood? Did she take centuries to grow up? Or did she mature at a normal rate and then simply live as an adult for thousands of years? Anyway, we get some backstory. The stories of Greek Mythology are already considered ancient at this point, having happened a long time ago.  So this movie canonises the existence of the Greek gods as real in the DC universe. The marvel movies present the Norse gods as real, but aliens. This movie doesn’t make that claim. It leaves it a little uncertain, but the implication seems to be that Zeus and his mates were actual gods. The implication also is that human beings were created by Zeus. At least, Antiope believes this. After Ares corrupted the hearts of mankind, Zeus created the Amazons to influence men’s hearts with love. So, did humans, male and female, not already know love? Or is the suggestion here that the Amazons were the first, females? Perhaps that human females are descended from them? Again, it’s not completely clear. We know the gods can die, given that Ares killed all but Zeus, so they are in some form mortal beings.  With his dying breath, Zeus created a weapon that could kill a god, just in case Ares returned. The movie cleverly doesn’t explain exactly what the weapon is yet. The look on Antiope’s face when Dianna asks to see the god killer means so much more on repeat viewing. Note she never actually calls the sword the god killer. Dianna is the one who says it. She assumes, though clearly pushed in that direction. Hipolita is hesitant to let Dianna train as a warrior, but when she eventually agrees, she insists that she be trained harder than any Amazon before her. But she must never know the truth about herself. This, of course, is our first clue that Dianna herself is the god killer. But because she’s never been told the truth, when her powers begin to manifest, she has no idea what’s going on.   And then we hear the buzz of a propeller plane, as it passes through the forcefield protecting Thymiscira. Chris Pine was a great pick to play Steve. I was surprised how easily I was able to seperate him from Captain Kirk. Possibly because, to me, Captain Kirk will always be William Shatner.   I love the visual contrast we the camera passes through the forcefield. The bright world of Thymiscira gives way to the dark fog surrounding the German ship. Does Thymiscira have the same day/night cycle as the rest of the planet? Because it looks like night time out there. Of course, fog does make everything a lot darker. And the shot as the German officer puts his head in and out of the forcefield is cool.   Dianna’s sense of wonder as she sees a man for the first time is nicely played. Here’s a question. Why didn’t the Amazon’s continue to advance their weapons technology? We’ll learn later that they are at least somewhat aware of what is going on in the outside world. They know many languages of the outside world, including English. They’re a race of warriors, so certainly not against fighting. Don’t get me wrong, they clean the floor with the German soldiers, guns or not, but they pay a hice price in casualties. Do they consider bows and swords more honourable, in some way, than bullets? Because that’s a perspective I don’t quite understand. Of course, there’s no denying that swords are cool. And so Antiope dies, sacrificing her life, taking the bullet to save Dianna. As she dies, she knows the time has come. War has consumed the world. Ares has returned.   The Amazon who argues against killing Steve on the spot is wise. “If we kill him, we learn nothing of who they are and why they came,” she says.   And we’re introduced to the laso of truth. A potentially cheesy addition to the Wonder Woman mythos, and yet this movie makes it work. The scene as Steve tries desperately to avoid revealing that he’s a spy. He has a duty. He can’t willing reveal classified secrets in war time, but ultimately we has no choice. I like the way it’s portrayed as he endures as much as he can before the truth finally bursts out of his mouth. Can I say that I love that they set this movie in World War 1. World War 2 has been used so many times, in so many stories, it’s practically a cliche. I mean it was a practical good idea to set this apart from Captain America, which was set in World War 2, but from a creative standpoint, I just enjoyed the earlier setting. I guess since the fairly recent century of the first world war, I’ve been thinking a lot more about it than I used to, when I was younger.   Steve is on a very important mission. If he doesn’t get word of Doctor Poison’s plan back to the British, millions will die. Apparently, the Amazon’s haven’t been playing much attention to the outside world for a while, because they’re not aware of the great war. And you can understand that from their perspective, hearing of this horrific war, truly a war like none the world had ever seen, it’s obvious that Ares has returned and is messing with humanity.   Dianna starts off this story as quite naive. But that doesn’t mean she’s wrong in wanting to go with Steve and help. This is why the Amazon’s were created. This is why Dianna was created. But, like the monks of old, the Amazons have shut themselves off from the world, rather than allow themselves to influence it.   This movie doesn’t quite portray Wonder Woman as being able to fly, in the same sense that Superman can fly, but she can certainly jump like no human ever could.   So she breaks in, steals the lasso, shield and sword, and armour. She’s wearing the wonder woman costume from this point on, but it’ll actually be quite a while before we see it. We see a lot of Dianna’s character when she says “I’m willing to fight for those who cannot.” In the end, Hipolita knows what Dianna must do, so she lets her go with her blessing. As a parent, I understand her reluctance. Who wants to willingly let their children go out into the wide world where they might get hurt? I haven’t faced this challenge yet, but for Hippolita, it’s greater, because there is so much danger out there.   Steve kinda plays along a bit. He doesn’t believe for a minute that Ares, the greek god of war literally exists, but he’s also seen the power of these people, so he knows there’s something to them. Again, we see Dianna’s naivete. As soon as Ares is dead, the war will end and men will be good again. I mean, she’s not exactly wrong, but it’s nowhere near as simple as she thinks. She’s going to have to face up to the hard reality that things are more complex than she sees if she’s going to have a hope of fulfilling her destiny.   Steve has a bit of a cynical view of marriage. And if you look at the statistics, it’s not hard to understand why. But despite what he says, plenty of married couples still do love each other up until death.I fully intend to do so.   So Doctor Poison has developed a serum that gives Ludendorf greater than human strength. Okay. I can suspend disbelief enough for that. But the way his face glows, I dunno. It looks like something supernatural or alien. Not like a chemical concoction that could believably have been developed by a human in the early twentieth century.   It makes sense that Steve, though American, is working for British intelligence. The Americans didn’t enter World War 1 until very late in the game. Even now, as it’s nearing its end, they haven’t been involved that long. It’s interesting that not a single frame of this movie takes place in America. I kinda liked that. Not that I have anything against movies taking place in America. A lot of my favourite movies do, but it just made sense for this story that it took place elsewhere in the world, and frankly, there’s a whole planet out here. Not every Superhero story has to take place in America. Dianna’s arrival in London is truly fantastic. This is an incredible exotic world to her, and she drinks it all up. I love the idea of Superhero period pieces. I always have. There haven’t been many. I’ve got to admit, this one is my favourite.   It’s very sweet when Diana gets excited at the cry of a baby. She’s never seen a baby before. She’s been surrounded by adults all her life. Of course she’d want to see it. I heard a lot of praise for this movie from female viewers, because it allowed Wonder Woman to be powerful, strong, and a mighty warrior, without being masculine. She was still allowed to be feminine, with all the varied things that means. They really appreciated that. And I think I can understand that.   And we’re introduced to Etta. Etta is totally awesome. She brings a lot of the humour to this film, but it all flows naturally out of her character. This movie had a lot more humour than Man of Steel or Batman V Superman, but unlike Suicide Squad, the humour was all character-based and natural. Much of it came from Dianna’s being a fish out of water, the rest came from Etta’s great personality.   So they make a little joke about slavery. The way Etta describes her job as Steve’s secretary does sound like the definition of slavery to Dianna, but I think she left out some important details. Now, I’m not going to suggest that the world of 1918 was in any way an equitable society. Far from it. But there Is a big difference between somebody who voluntarily enters into employment, offering services, for which they are paid money, and a slave. I think to seriously confuse the two runs the danger of understating the evils of true slavery. But I may be reading too much into this. It’s a joke.   It does make sense for Dianna to put on setting-appropriate clothes to help her blend in. I do love the scene of her walking through the building in her street clothes holding her sword and shield.   And the scene in the alley, where they are confronted by the german spies, and Dianna saves Steve, is awesome. It’s very reminiscent of the scene in Superman: The Movie, where Clark and Lois are mugged. The way Dianna catches the bullet. I’m pretty sure that was deliberate. It’s a great scene.   Steve realises in that moment just what an asset Dianna is in a fight. He doesn’t need to protect her. She ends up protecting him.   Her naivete continues as she asks the german spy where she can find ares. She’s taking everything at face value, assuming people know what she’s talking about. And now we meet Sir Patrick Morgan. He’s telling everyone they need an armistice. Which is quite ironic if you know who he really is. He sees Dianna and is taken aback. He says it’s because there is a woman in the room. But it may be that he recognises her. And it’s Steve who comes up with her secret identity name, Dianna Prince. This is done in a realistic way. She can’t just walk around calling herself Princess of Themyscira. Due to Dianna’s linguistic expertise, they learn of Doctor Poison’s plan. The creation of a dangerous gas against which masks will be useless. Morgan continues to argue for the armistice, but by doing so, he prevents Steve’s mission to stop Doctor Poison. Dianna’s passionate argument to the generals is very satisfying. And yet, after Steve tells Dianna he’s taking her to the front against orders, and recruits some backup, he shows up and helps them. Given what I know about Morgan, I’m not quite sure why he’s helping Steve and Dianna. But as I watch I’m going to pay close attention and see if I can get my head around it. Anyway, he gives them money to fund their illegal mission. I love the moment when Dianna tries ice cream for the first time. Another one of those nice little moments that show her innocence. I don’t think Steve believes that the greek god of war is behind all of this, not really, but he’s seen enough to know that Dianna and her people are powerful, more so than any normal human. He knows something is going on, and he knows she can help him. So he’s bringing her along, and acting as if what she says is true. The more I think about it, the more I realise that it had to be world war 1 in this story. This is a war like none the world has ever seen. This is just what it would look like if Ares was trying to destroy the world. That wouldn’t have worked for world war 2. Don’t get me wrong. WW2 was horrific but wasn’t as unprecedented as WW1. So once they meet chief, a nickname that would probably be considered politically incorrect in today’s world, we’ve assembled the team we first saw in the photo in Batman V Superman. We see a little glimpse of the reality of war with charlie. He’s clearly suffering from post-traumatic stress. Dianna has an eye opening experience as they near the front lines and she gets a sense of what war really looks like. It’s a powerful moment as they walk through the trench. Dianna learns about the town of Veld. The inhabitants have been enslaved. Steve is not unsympathetic but helping those people is impossible. Dianna doesn’t understand. And yet, she has the power to do what nobody else can. And so , she takes off her coat and finally, we see her in the wonder woman costume. Can you believe this is the first time we see Wonder Woman? I didn’t realise until this moment that he hadn’t actually seen it. The character kept us so engaged.  But it’s a wonderful moment. So triumphant and heroic.  And yet there’s not the slightest hint of cheese. It plays wonderfully. I get a whole lot of goosebumps watching this scene. Words can’t do it justice. I can only say it’s awesome. And we see her do a few of her super jumps. So they arrive in Veld.  This is a fantastic action sequence. And finally we get a reprise of the amazing wonder woman theme from Batman V Superman. That music was incredible and I’m so glad they brought it back in this movie. It fits even better here than it did in the previous movie. Interesting fact, did you know it’s not actually an electric guitar playing those notes, it’s a cello put through the same kind of distortion usually applied to guitars. Very cool. What a great moment of celebration as Dianna realises she has saved the people of the town. They’re all feeling the elation. And we see the famous photo being taken. Wonderful. And we get a nice little reminder that few of these people wanted to be soldiers. They all had different aspirations and dreams. Morgan is insistent that Steve not go near the meeting to jeopardize the armistice. But if Steve doesn’t, and the poison weapon is deployed, there will be no armistice. Which, of course, is what Morgan wants. He wants to war to continue. So why did he give Steve that money to help him go? Dianna thinks, quite logically, that Ludinorf is Ares. So Steve and Dianna finally have a quiet enough moment to really draw close to one another. And they spend the night together. Love is a tricky thing in a movie. In a TV show, you have time to let people slowly and naturally fall in love over a course of multiple episodes, just like in real life. But a movie has very limited time. You almost have to make it happen faster than it logically should. A good movie somehow makes it work despite that. I’m not sure how or why. But for me, in this movie, it works. You know what I like about their relationship. It’s sweet, it’s genuine, and there’s not a hint of angst. Dianna wants to storm into the castle, guns blazing, and take out Ludinorf. Steve is wise to advise a more subtle approach. Some stories with female heroes, Star Trek Voyager comes to mind, try to make their heroes perfect. They can never be wrong. Wonder Woman doesn’t take that approach. It allows Dianna to be flawed. To be naive and to make mistakes. By allowing her to be human, in that sense, I think this movie portrays Wonder Woman as a more satisfying female hero. And I think that's what a lot of the female viewers who praised this movie appreciated. Certainly I appreciated that approach to Superman in Man of Steel.   So anyway, Dianna finds her own way to sneak into the palace. And to her credit, she is blending in. Steve’s primary objective is to stop the gas weapon from being used. Dianna’s primary objective is to kill Ares. Then everything will be good again. Their objectives are at odds. Steve can’t let her kill Ludinorf until they find the gas. Maybe Ludinorf is not Ares. Or maybe Ares doesn’t even exist.   And then they test the gas weapon on Veld. And we have that heart-breaking moment as Dianna goes and sees that all the people of that town, who she had saved, are dead. It’s a tragic moment. And Dianna blames Steve, because he stopped her from killing Ares. In her mind, Steve has been corrupted  as well. Which kind of is some growth for her, because in any war, there aren’t really pure good guys and bad guys. It’s never entirely that simple.   This movie had a very successful tone. It had those comedic moments (which actually were funny) to satisfy those who prefer the light-hearted stuff, but it still had a lot of depth, and gritty emotion that I crave in a superhero movie. It was the perfect middle ground that seemed to work for everybody.   We have another great action scene as Wonder Woman battles Ludinorf. So she kills him. It’s over. Except …. Nothing happens. No great world-shattering change. The war is still raging. And Dianna is forced to come face to face with the truth. She was seeing things in simplistic terms. The truth is a lot more complex than she had been able to see. It’s a terrible moment of self-doubt for her.  “Maybe people aren’t always good, Ares or no Ares,” steve ays. “Maybe it’s who they are.” Dianna can’t accept this. After all she’s seen. People killing people they can’t even see. Civilians. Children. Humans can’t be that bad on their own. Can they? Her mother was right. MAnkind doesn’t deserve her.   It’s not about deserve. Maybe we don’t. Maybe it’s not about what we deserve. Maybe it’s about what we believe. Don’t you think I’d like to believe it was all just due to one guy. This is all wonderful thematic stuff.   So while Dianna questions everything she’s ever believed, Steve has to go. Someone still has to stop that gas. And that’s when Morgan shows up. And we learn the unexpected truth. Morgan is Ares. I thought this was a brilliant move.   First of all, I’m glad they didn’t make a German Ares. That’s too easy. Too black and white. The charming posh old british man. Who would ever have expected him to be Ares?   So now we know that Morgan is Ares, we still ask, why did he help Steve come here to stop the gas? He wants the gas weapon to be used. He wants the war to continue.   “All I wanted was for the gods to see how evil my father’s creations were.” He says. “I am not the God of war, I am the God of truth.” There is so much here that resonates with me spiritually. So much biblical parallel.   As the sword burns, Dianna finally learns that it isn’t the god-killer. SHE is the god killer. She is the weapon Zeus left behind to protect the world from Ares.   We find that humans never needed Ares to make them fight. War and evil ARE in the hearts of man. It’s our sinful nature. IT always has been. But he gives a little push here, and little push there. Gives them the weapons and let them use them. All he did was engineer an armistice he knew they could never keep. I think, in the end, he recognised Dianna when he first saw her in London. He wanted her to be here, and let her naivete make the war worse, not better. I think that’s probably why he gave that money to Steve.   When Steve sees them fighting in the distance, he believes. Finally he has no doubts. Ares is real, and he’s here.   Steve has a plan. A way to get that gas out of here. He’s got to fly the plane out of here. It’ll likely be a suicide mission, but that’s what soldiers do. They make the ultimate sacrifice.   I like the intercutting between Dianna’s battle with Ares and Steve’s attempt to hijack the plane.   It’s a heartbreaking moment as Steve fires the gun that destroys the plane, the poison, and himself.   Was that necessary? I dunno, but it at least makes as much sense as Steve Rogers crashing the plane in Captain America. Probably more.   Ares’ aim here to to prove to Dianna how pathetic humans are. How evil and undeserving they are of her sympathy. Doctor Poison ends up being the symbol of mankind. And he’s right. The humans don’t deserve mercy. They don’t deserve her sympathy. It was an interesting film-making technique to obscure the sound of Dianna and Steve’s final conversation, only to reveal it now in this moment. But he makes a good point. He can save today, but she can save the world.   “They’re everything you say, but so much more,” Dianna says. “It’s not about deserve. It’s about what you believe. And I believe in love.” This all lines up so well with what I believe. We ARE undeserving, but we are the recipients of love.   I didn’t expect this movie to be so thematically relevant. I really connected with this. To use a Christian word, Dianna exercises grace. Undeserved favour. I don’t mean to constantly bring my personal beliefs into this, but honestly, each of these movies just connect with me so personally in these moments. I can’t not talk about it.   Well, Ares is now dead. And the war is over. Without the devastation of that gas weapon, the armistice has been signed, just as history records.   But the death of Ares is no quick and easy fix to the world’s problem. The sin in human hearts is still there. Each person must make their own choice every day. No hero can do this for them.   And that brings us back to present day, the framing device. This is her mission now, to help where she can. And to help people daily make that decision.   As she dives into the air and sails over the Paris skyline, she appears to be flying. Properly flying. Not just jumping. There is a lot of speculation that in the next Wonder Woman movie, which would have been released by now, were it not for COVID 19, she will gain the ability to fly. It’ll be interesting to see if that’s the case. Anyway, that movie will be set before the present day scenes here, so it’s conceivable.   This movie doesn’t have an after-credit scene, but there is an epilogue on the Blur-ray, in which Etta sends the team out to recover a cube-shaped artefact found near the western front, which if course, is a set-up for Justice League.   I love this movie. Where Man of Steel triumphed as a science fiction movie, Wonder woman triumphs as a war movie, and a fantasy. It’s a mashup that I really really like.   Well, it’s been a wild ride. Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, Wonder Woman, even Suicide Squad. I count them all as great movies.   Next up, we’ll take a look at the theatrical version of Justice League. I’ll talk about what works for me, and what doesn’t, and try to settle in my mind exactly what it is that I hope for from the Snyder Cut which we’ll be getting next year.

Mitologia: le meravigliose storie del mondo antico

Fedra e Ippolito.

In which the Snarkers rave over Wonder Woman. We talk about what it meant to us to see this strong, powerful woman portrayed on screen as a warrior. We talk about Antiope and Amazon warriors and Steve Trevor and the multi-cultural team and that amazing, empowering, inspiring, emotional walk into no-man’s lands. We embrace, once again, the sexualization of the Chrisses. (we are for it).You guys, we loved this movie. Is it perfect? No. But, just like Wonder Woman’s thigh jiggle does not make her less strong, this movie’s imperfections don’t make it less inspiring. Wonder Woman!
